    Hey guys, love Guitar of the Day. The Firebird was sweet. Nice use of Blind Faith. And I can so relate to broken headstocks on them. My "Bicentennial" model (gold hardware, dot inlays, stop tailpiece) broke not once but twice. The second time required a rebuild. The fix was fantastic though and I eventually got the original headstock autographed by Certified Guitar Player, Tommy Emmanuel. He almost shed a tear when he signed it. Peace.

    Did Jen get the transmission help she needed?
    From a panoramic point of you, Gibson learned everything they know about F hole guitars from Epiphone.
    It’s killer that Mark broke into John Lee Hooker. Didn’t Howlin’ Wolf use an ES-355?

  • @AdmiralQuality
    @AdmiralQuality 6 років тому +12

    Sorry to get pedagogical/pedantic. (But that's our goal here, isn't it? ;) But those aren't "coils". They're not magnets either (there's a bar magnet under them on the bottom of the pickup). They're "pole pieces". Some pickups, like Fender Strat/Tele etc, have pole pieces that are magnets as well. But PAFs, etc, have steel poles that carry and shape the field up from a bar magnet that they contact.
    Carry on! :D

    • @AdmiralQuality
      @AdmiralQuality 6 років тому +9

      Oh! And no, string length (or angle) behind the bridge saddles or nut, contrary to popular belief, does not change the tension of the string. (If it changed the tension it would change the pitch. And then you'd tune it right back to the tension it was before.)
      What does happen is extra unplayable string length provides more string to stretch which, counter-intuitively, makes you have to bend the string *farther* horizontally to get the same change in pitch/tension. That's why we can feel the difference between right/left handed Strat/Tele style headstocks in our playing, and why the reverse way is arguably better (as the strings you're going to bend the most, the treble ones, have the least extra string to reel out from behind nut/saddle and work against your bending).
      Make sense?

      I learn so much from this channel! But when the topic veers into physics I suddenly get an advantage over the historians. ;) (I'm not a half bad historian at this point myself but mostly just for classic Fenders. Mark has taught me tons about all the other brands and models though. This is the only YT channel I watch religiously 5 days a week!)

    I'm a little puzzled with Mark's awkward style & manner of playing bar-chords up/down the neck, for example @ 5:21 while playing on the couch. Where did he learn that unorthodox grip, with the thumb wrapped around the neck? Maybe he played baseball in high school?? Because that's how batters are trained to hold a baseball bat when they choose to "bunt" at the pitch.

Additionally, you're fooling yourself if you don't acknowledge that they've opened your eyes to guitars that you didn't even know existed. Be real pal, give credit where credit is due. Peace.

      Darrien Day i would never fly to California and buy a guitar from these guys. I'm sure their "prices" aren't any better than some people on reverb or eBay who are selling modern Epiphones or Squiers or even Fenders and Gibsons from merely five years ago. Also from the other videos I've seen on this channel, Mark doesn't seem like the nicest guy. Also why does he fuck up the back of every guitar he touches with a jacket? Does norm not give a shit? I guess he doesnt
