Listened to the album myself a little while ago, found myself to thoroughly enjoy it from front to back, not anything mind-blowing like you said but definitely enjoyable enough for me to consider coming back to it semi-often. Orange Line in particular really stood out to me, undoubtly my favourite track on the album. Thanks for doing your reviews Wonky and checking out all these amazing electronic albums, no one else I know really talks about them so I'm glad we have you. Merry holidays! 💙
well this is a nice christmas surprise! coincidentally this album was released on christmas, was that intentional on your part? :P anyways yeah, it's just a fun collection of idm songs, but the gimmick of their short lengths helps to make it stick out. it's the kind of thing i can listen to in my car and it'll always hit, especially when shuffling 45 tracks gives a unique experience each time. one time the CD finished on anchor point and it worked surprisingly well! that's probably my favorite track here. good to give this little album some more exposure; it still deserves it. nice review and happy holidays!
A very rare instance of an album to be such freeflow in the IDM stratosphere! This and DJ ROZWELL - None Of This Is Real (ain’t really IDM enough but holds that same bustling, spontaneous structure). Super gorgeous record this is ! Percussion is truly a highlight from this record me thinks! They be the versatile backbone to the whole ting. Overall, a very plush record that captures a glacial landscape of low poly penguins happily sliding around on their bellies and icy octopuses jamming around yeh. If you want a record like this from them with more meat on their bones, the comp “Incidental Guilt Jazz” is right down your ally. Oxen (Slow) is gorgeous bro! Take it easy Wonky lad! Hope you had a lovely Christmas mate :) cheers!
Good review, though I will say I disagree with relegating Merck stuff as Boards of Canada rip offs, I always found a lot of that label and it’s artists to have very pretty and sounds unique to each artist, sure many have influences of downtempo, glitch hop and melodic IDM on their sleeves, but I feel outside IDM as a whole, Tycho and Arovane are the ones that feel a bit derivative. Machinedrum I think has progressed into a lot of sounds, but his early IDM material is quite good. I love Boards of Canada, but as someone who’s explored a lot more in IDM, I see myself coming back to more of the smaller artists than acts like BoC and Aphex Twin (who are legends), as I feel many artists also make really awesome stuff. I remember my friend sharing Ilkae to me in 2019, who I shared to DMAN. This album is very good, I wouldn’t say it completely shows Aaron’s stuff as a whole, but is a fantastic bit of what he can do. Later albums he gets more experimental and has his own unique sound, feels very chiptune at points like his label mates Proswell. I may contribute my own request one day as I’m very curious how you’d feel about another small group called Yimino (who Plaid are good friends with and remixed), they’re one of my absolute favorites. On to Patreon
for the record I only said Tycho's Past Is Prologue and Machinedrum's early stuff (circa Now You Know and Urban Biology) were Boards of Canada ripoffs, I wasn't trying to relegate anyone else on the label to that status. tbh this very album is a good counterexample, BoC absolutely would not have made an album like Pistachio Island since it's much too lighthearted and glitch-heavy to fit with their style also fwiw the guy who requested this album already sent in a request for a Yimino album to be covered in my planned all-Patreon request SSIM roundup sometime next year, so I'll be getting to them then. there's still room in that lineup if you want to send in a different request tho
Thank you for being somewhat of a cornerstone in electronic music discussion on youtube :)
Crazy how we're nearing the 10 year anniversary of the channel. It doesn't feel like that long.
Unsung classic in the realm of IDM

I've been waiting for this review for so long, this is probably one of my favorite electronic albums.

Came across this album while listening to NTS a while back
Definitely scratched that early 00's itch I was craving
This is an album I've been curious about for a while.
I just listen throughout and yeah, this is amazing. I'll put this on while drawing.
Top 10 IDM album! For some reason, it really blew up on RYM a couple of years ago.
wonky slush
wock angle
Hmmm ... have you ever checked Prefuse 73's from this era?: "One Word Extinguisher" or "Extinguished Outtakes"
