    I played this game religiously in the early 2000s. I had a notebook with every ports location and what they sold/prices. For me, this was one of the best gams on the SNES.

      I've spent more time with New Horizons overall, but man, the amount of hours I spent with both games is absurd. And both games, yes, did involve that same notepad, especially where I was doing both of them pre-internet

      You're probably right about that but some people would say Romance of the 3 Kingdoms. I haven't gotten to those yet, or the N.A. & P.T.O. games you mentioned but one I found about 5 years back and played countless hours of was Rise of the Phoenix -- which is in the same vein as Rot3k on story-line but I'm not sure if it plays similarly. That and Liberty or Death -- When I found the game manuals online to learn "how" to actually play, I couldn't put down the damn controller and to be honest, it seems as though the rest of these Koei strategy games are no different...this one for sure is!

    • @ScottBeck79

      @@subtledemisefox Dynasty Warriors Tactics 1 & 2 are the only two with that title (that I've played) that I have really liked so far. I would hope there are a few more with that title beyond the PS2 era that are part of the strategy series but I'm not sure if that's case or not.

    An interesting fact about the game, originally the “gold” commodity was supposed to be “slaves”. They changed this for obvious reasons, but if you check the ports that sell the cheapest gold, they’re historically places that were heavily involved in slave trading.

  • @BlackHawk4698
    @BlackHawk4698 2 роки тому +7

    Oh man, I remember playing this a bunch with my best friend who had this as a kid. We would stay up all night sailing around, starving our crew, then starting over in Lisbon and trying to sail somewhere else. We eventually figured out if you fire most of your starting crew you can make your supplies last a lot longer, which let us reach the Americas and India. Since we were young we never made a whole lot of money or found any treasures, but we had a ton of fun just sailing around and finding ports. I even asked my parents for a map of the world so we would know where to look. Good times, good review.

    Games like this built character. After walking miles in summer heat to the video store and spending a princely sum to rent something like this I couldn’t just switch it off if it didn’t grab me. I had to stick it out, get my money’s worth, and prevail against the evil rat bastards that created these games.
    That’s how I got through Bart vs The World on NES. What doesn’t smother you to death with boredom and frustration only makes you stronger.

    I had this game on SNES as a kid and absolutely loved it. Played it into the ground. As an adult, it came to mind when I started speedrunning games... because what would be more fun than to speedrun massive KOEI games, right? The run was over 14 hours long when I first looked at it, and involved multiple massive adventure quests and quite a few bathroom breaks (also, the runner was French Canadian so I couldn't understand what he was saying). Took me a couple years to get up the courage to try something like this, but eventually completed it! Found out that the Genesis version -should- be the fastest, but got into competition over the NES version because that's the one the other people did. You would probably not be surprised that we accept absolutely no adventure quests in a speedrun :D Anyway, I really appreciated this video and wanted to share all that with you, and as of yesterday, we know the game can be beat in just over 5 hours. Maybe we'll get lower than that sometime, too.

    This is my #1 game. I feel I have a mastery of this game. I can start with nothing and within a few minutes have a huge bank and everything is up to me. Biggest hint: Just buy sugar in Lisbon and sell in Bordeaux, then buy porcelain there and sell it back to Lisbon. Before the market changes due to your saturation, you'll have a huge amount of money and then can move to the Medetaranian and start with art and other higher-priced items.

    This absolutely is one of my most favorite games. Were you aware there are multiple different endings? You don't necessarily have to completely fall In love and woo the kings daughter? You can also become a pirate or privateer and have multiple final ending cut scenes. This game is very similar to a choose your own adventure book, if those even exist anymore, all in all a game worth playing for many........ hours!

    Uncharted Waters New Horizons (basically pt2) is a much better game. If you liked the original, guarantee you’ll like the second more. Bigger fleets, way more ship types (including Middle Eastern, Chinese, and Japanese designs), more ports, more secrets, more disasters, etc. There’s three different areas of fame, so you can play as a pirate, a trader, or am explorer...or just do all three. Different mates have different skills like gunnery, negotiation or celestial navigation, making some better suited for roles than others. You can even store fleets of ships in the capital cities.

    It's literally just Pirates! as a SNES game lol. I played that first and was getting deja vu. Pirates! might actually be a better game, which is saying a lot because UW games are excellent, but Pirates! doesn't have the timeless graphical style of these later SNES games.

    • @scottythegreat1
      @scottythegreat1 Рік тому

      Not quite. You need to start out as a trader in Uncharted Waters. You cant just run into one ship and take it if you can just win if you know how to fence the captain like in Pirates. There is also the hiring of mates and keeping them loyal. You only had 3 types of goods to trade, there are a LOT more in UW and there are some that are just worthless and unprofitable.
      Koei took Pirates and brought it to the next level. The issue is that 60,000 gold is a maximum.

    I'm not even finished with this game yet but needless to say, it is taking up a TON of my time! I already expected this based on this video and the later one on New Horizons. I have 3 different sessions going on my RaspPi - the NES, SNES & Genesis; the last one being my fav so far as it moves so much faster. Other than that, there really aren't a ton of differences. The NES & SNES are almost identical when it comes to music & graphically, they are all pretty much the same with some slight differences. The past 3 weekends, I have put in almost 36 hours into this games and each time, I only meant to play for an hour or 2 and I limit my "gaming" to Saturdays -- Extreme lack of productivity these past weekends for sure! By the time I get to NH I can only imagine how much time I will end up putting into that one.
    As I mentioned on your newest video (Tactics Ogre), you already added a crap ton to your list already. I've seen others mention this before as well so I am not alone in the thought you should potentially consider adding more 16 bit Koei games to the list, even though most aren't "RPGs", per se. From what I can see, there is a serious lack of GOOD coverage on these games. The way you cover these types of games, not just UW 1 & 2, but pretty much every one you've ever done that I've watched/listened to -- the way you do it gets out the most information without wasting time. I saw you went over 7K the other day as well so congrats on that.... You'll break 20K before 2024 is over -- Mark my words.
