Glad he articulated the biggest issue with action movies in the 2000's, that close up shakey cam shit was so annoying and one of the reasons I loved John Wick so much
And this is also one thing that the movies with Tony Jaa from Thailand (Ong Bak) and actors from Indonesia such as Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim and Yayan Ruhian (from Raid, Raid 2 and The Night Comes for Us) have surpassed to a great degree, the camerawork enhances the action (instead of hiding it) and all the actors are experienced martial artists, they know what they're doing and so does the director.

Apparently when clint threw the 44 on the ground he was supposed to hit cushion to brake the fall but he was focused on acting while filming the scene and missed throwing it onto the concrete, so the scowl on his face and the sound of the clattering metal happened in the moment because he scuffed one of the three revolvers available for the film
I'm not usually a big fan of Taran Butler, but you should have just let him run with this one. I could have listened to at least another hour of Taran geek out on movie guns! Well done!
It’s great seeing James nerd-out with guests. He’s enjoying his time with Taran so much that every so often he behaves like a dork... like I am most of the time. Nice to see beneath the cracks in the marble
Awesome video!!!!!! I would watch this even if it was 2 hrs long. Need to do part 2 and 3. I'm a gun guy but I was a movie guy first too....you made my day!!!!
The .41 Mag was supposedly used in early scenes till they got a .44. Even funny is the way they used both 6.5" and 8 3/8" version in different scenes for "Dramatic effect", gotta love Hollyweird. lol
To be fair to the hand to hand fights in the Bourne series, the issue with the fights (shakey cam) was more of an issue with the director not knowing how to block and shoot a fight scene. The fight choreographer on Bourne, Jeff Imada, was not only a film industry mentor to Chad (John Wick's director) but they both also trained under the same primary martial arts instructor, Dan Inosanto, with Jeff being the more senior student. The techniques in the two series are all drawn from the same source, Inosanto's broad curriculum, with Bourne favoring more Filipino Martial Arts (Kali) and John Wick being more geared towards grappling (Judo, BJJ, Shoot Wrestling.)
Really great video! The reason I became interested in firearms was because of Harrys Model 29.Great to see it as Tarans favourite. He has a great taste in films. Im a big fan of Michael Manns films and Thief is a masterpiece ,that Hoag 45 longslide Gold Cup was a beauty!
What makes the John Wick franchise stand out, in terms of how the actors are trained both with firearms & in hand-to-hand combat and how the action is shot/edited/choreographed, is the fact that the 2 guys behind these movies, C.Stahelski/ D.Leitch, are former stunt coordinators/martial artists. They know how a fight scene or shootout should look on screen, so that's exciting for the viewers. Most movie directors are clueless about these things.
Probably my favorite video from all of GunTube in a very long time. The mash-up between movie and TV nerd-dom and firearms is just endlessly watchable. Thank you TFB.
The moment Taran talked about Magnum PI and the Ivan guy the literal first thought that came to my mind was "Did you watch Regis this morning?" followed by "OH BOYAKASHA! RIGHT IN THE FACE!"
Man, great video. Very insightful into the weapon aspect of the movie industry. Spot on about Dirty Harrys 44mag being the best. That McQueen movie looked sick. I've always thought Bullet was his best. Who knew about the other Heat movie? Wow. The LA bank shoot out before the real one in 97'. Need more vids like this James. Good work.
The m41a pulse rifle and smart gun or the lesser known Chinese M1L1 triple pulse assault rifle from Deep Rising are my faves but this seems to be a video about movie hand guns.
I would agree that all of these were iconic movie firearms. They left out James Bond though... Walther PPK, Beretta 418, Golden Gun? I mean so many to choose from. That’s what shaped my collection.
Phenomenal podcast. Steve, you ought to do more like this. It’s no secret most pre-gamer gun guys became gun guys from guns in cinema. Want to impress a buddy at the range or when you open your gun safe, pull out a movie clone. The “must haves” FAL, G3, Colt Commando became obsessions after Heat, the stainless folder Mini-14 after the A-Team, the Python after The Getaway and Magnum Force. Guns and cinema and a tier one guest make a great podcast.
Because he and that female employee had a fling? I mean, I know she later turned that into "But I didn't wanna." or are you talking about something else

Literally crying listening to Taran paraphrase entire films at 1000 miles an hour
I wonder if he likes Scarface for the product Tony Montana deals in as well as the M16A1 with grenade launcher that he shoots.
100% me too.. literally crying.. those Arnie scenes.. he seems like massive movie buff, love it!
James: “Let’s start with number 5.”
Taran: “Well I probably brought 10 out here.”
Everybody watching: *A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!*
I only brought 10 of my top five favorites.

@@BruceLortzHI Oh you're "that guy." Let me introduce you to a new concept that's sweeping the internet: fiction.
Jackie Chan called it out for decades. He said it was a sure sign the actors couldn't fight, and the producers were too cheap to hire stunt men.

Man I love listening to Taran tell stories, he’s a treasure trove of fascinating information. Kudos to James for just letting him do his thing.
The fact that he DIDN'T narrow it down to 5 guns was actually an absolute treat, thanks James.
