In this unique Ramadan course, Self-Knowledge: Towards a Qur’anic Anthropology, Hamza Yusuf examines Imam al-Raghib al-Asfahani’s Tafsil al-nash’atayn wa tahsil al-sa‘adatayn (An exposition of the two creations with means to the acquisition of the two felicities). Through the lens of the Qur’an, Imam al-Raghib, an eleventh-century polymathic exegete, presents a masterful study of the human being. Unlike any other work in the Islamic tradition, this short book leads a serious student into a completely Qur’anic perspective on what it means to be human, but more importantly, it explicates the means to achieve our God-given potential to realize true humanity (insaniyyah) in this life. In a time when postmodernist and nihilistic ideas of the self confound many, Imam al-Raghib provides a much-needed antidote by grounding us in true Qur’anic knowledge of the self, which results in knowledge of the universe, and in the meeting place of those two knowledges, one arrives at certainty of the Creator of one’s self and one’s world.

1:38:45 just something that help me regarding the question about sincerity, whenever you find yourself battling between ego and sincerely for Allah then read surah iklas 10 times because it talks about the oneness of Allah, the purebess because Allah isn't like creation unlike the bad thought which is filthy and needs to be cleanse.
-also Iklas means sincerely too so that help then just keep on going without thinking too much about the devils intention

Mohammed hijab should learn from the Qur'an and sunnah. Not some idolized shaykh who backtracks from the truth. Some advice to you is to not be Fanboy. First president of Scotland humza yousaf's policies include aborting a 8 month old child, banning gay therapy, teaching children as young as 5 year olds about homosexuality in the schools, and it continues. Humza yousaf said that his marriage which is hetrosexual is JUST like homosexual marriage. Is this Islam? He claims to be praying and fasting. Is he a Muslim then? Humza yousaf(first minister) is a kafir unless he backtracks (like your shaykh Hamza yusuf) and does repentance. Don't get me wrong. I like shaykh Hamza yusuf but I wasn't expecting him to backtrack on his statements like that. I'm deeply saddened. May God guide everyone including me. Aameen. Salam

@@maher19lowkeymontage33 May Allah bless and continue your defense of the deen. One item I wanted to state on Shaykh Hamza. He didn't backtrack. His position is clear and what is and is not recognized in Orthodox Sunni Islam, and he laid out how such decisions on whether someone is and not a Muslim officially should come about. Sure we can all put 2 and 2 together as laymen, but especially with just coming out a toxic takfiri period in recent decades, I think Shaykh Hamza is wise to advise non-scholars, da'ees, and keyboard warriors is warranted. And Allah knows best.

They are both right! But Cheikh Yusuf's position is a more generous interpretation of the PM's intentions based on precedents set by giant ulama that precedeed us. It's in the tradition of trying to find excuses for those that are mistaken or apparently mistaken. So he basically said that Yusaf could have been talking about the non-muslims and that some islamic scholars think that fiqh based rules and the sharia don't apply to non-muslims. He did not in order to not make takfir because he knows that it's a grave thing. Please brothers, let's not fight especially during ramadan.

I think the point Hamza Yusuf is making, which I agree with, is stating a particular belief is not Islamic and calling out someone for it is fine, but making a formal declaration of apostasy on someone is extreme without getting further clarification from them. Otherwise you will be held accountable for making such a bold remark.

You will notice that Cheikh Murad also criticized the Scottish PM but he did not make takfir. Saying that the PM might have been talking about non-muslims only is a generous way of saying he could have just made an honest mistake and to keep him in the fold of islam. I love Muhammad Hijab but the difference in age and maturity shows between the approach taken but the more seasoned elders and the brash style of the young lion. May Allah bless them all and reward them all and may Allah make more of them for our Umma.

The sheikh didn't mention him specifically. I don't think he would enter into these pointless debates about personalities. He speaks generally.
