- Hair Rigs can be a Life Saver 😊
Simon with the help of Aurora at @seesound4009 in Barcelona talks through the steps involved to get a mic rigged in the hair, the kit required & where it sounds best!
Knowing the technique is good but always consult with the Hair & Makeup Department and allow them to do the hair rig!
The sound you can get from a well placed hair rig has some great advantages over body worn mic placements, firstly it will always follow the head turns, the hair provides a natural wind protection and the overall sound can be more natural, scratch free and easier to mix with the sound of a boom.
In this video Simon uses two @hideamic6905 Clipz to rig the mic in the hair with a 4060 @DPAmicrophones .
Filmed at the Barcelona offices of @seesound4009 as part of our URSA Workshop Tour of Spain.
Has anyone tried to do this with cos11? How does it sound?
What a cute shirt with Edward scissor hands but that’s not exactly what a was trying to find
Can you explain why you would avoid closer to the ear as said in 3:35 ? Please and thank you.
The sound is less natural. He may be referring to something different, but as a sound designer we always aim for the most transparent sound and it gravitates away from that the farther away from the forehead/hairline one places the mic. Ear rigs are the worst offenders, but in some cases you have no choice (bald head/little hair for the clip to grip).
I've always wondered with hair rigs - doesn't hair locks that fall on a grille of a mic make rustling, scratching noises.
unless it moves really tightly and quickly against the capsule otherwise it doesn't create rustling noise as hair are extremely tiny and soft. When we rig it this way the hair is just softly sitting on the mic, it doesn't rustle against it.
NEVER touch the hair without the hair- and makeup stylist!
Which is what he said specifically. lol
Literally how he started his demonstration lmao
a very fine and accurate observation from both of you.
that's what he said and that's what's very important.
and that is why I have repeated it again in this comment.
Have a nice weekend
