'The Hitcher' deserves a spot on this list. It's one of Christopher Nolan's favorite movies.
I absolutely love The Hitcher. I first saw it in 1993 and never forgot about it. I now have the special edition DVD. It must rank among the more violent 80s films along with Robocop and The Terminator!
Rutger is a top notch villain, and the ending is chefs kiss.
Such an underrated thriller. Rutger is terrifying; he actually scared C. Thomas Howell with his method acting

I love Night of the Comet. When I was a kid USA network liked to show “bad” movies in the 80’s.
90s was so shitty that they had to pretend that 80's had it flaws.
It's been a long time since I have seen Night of the comet but watchedit a few times, so I kind of forgot about what happened in most of it just remember everyone had vanished except a couple of girls & a few badguys chasing them around a big city, kind of strange but scary & good.

My college professor had it on our list
After Hours is well known though...
when I saw that movie in Boston on its first release, the audience was in stitches, laughing. A few weeks later, I was visiting home in Missouri, and I convinced a friend to go see it and the audience there were like "what the hell are we watching? Is this a movie?"
Something Wicked This Way Comes definitely deserves a place on this list.
But it wasn’t released in the ‘80s. Believe Disney released it in the ‘70s during their rough period following Walt’s death

I loved Strange Invaders
I watched The Wraith everyday for the entire summer it was on HBO. '87 or '88. That movie was a part of my childhood.
Manhunter is an underrated classic. The first Hannibal Vector film with William Petersen as Will Graham and Successon's Brian Cox as Hannibal. Directed by Michael Mann
Cox was way more chilling as Lecktor than Hopkins
It’s so ‘80s, but it’s well done. Mann has style and the source material that matched his direction
Manhunter is a far better film than the overhyped Silence of the Lambs. What a superb director Michael Mann is! Surely, Manhunter is one of the great serial killer films.

this movie was remade as "Red Dragon" with Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton as the two leads, Manhunter was better imo
I would have included "A Fish Called Wanda". Made in the 80's, it has been long forgotten but one of Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis's best performances.
I have to throw in "The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai". It's such a fun movie and you get to see several well-known actors early in their careers.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Strange to see Brazil on this list. Maybe it’s my generation and/or locale, but that film is beloved!
I don’t think enough current audiences know the film. Those who are Gilliam fans or fans of strange cinema are familiar with it

And I've seen at least half this list.
It had two Oscar nominations and won the LA Film Critics Association award for best picture, director, and screenplay.
Repo Man is a classic. 'Up the creek' is good for some campy late night viewing.
The 80s was just the best. Music, food, movies, and the esthetic.
I think 90s had a more diverse genre of classic movies

I would recommend the 80's movie "The Quiet Earth", a NZ movie that explores what happens if a person wakes up and discovers everyone else has vanished. a good watch.
This is one of my all-time favorites!

Hong Kong cinema was thriving in the 80s, especially the action genre: Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, A Better Tomorrow, City on Fire, A Chinese Ghost Story, Miracles, etc...
This shows how effective a distribution method the video store was. I saw all of these on VHS back in the day without deliberately seeking them out. They were just sitting there on the shelves staring at me. I got around to them all eventually except Come and See which I watched just recently on youtube!
to live and to die in la seems pretty forgotten/unknown and it's amazing timeless movie.
Kino put out a 4K not that long ago, which may have generated some interest in it
It’s my favorite Friedkin film. The cast is excellent & the car chase through the LA freeway is amazing
No Way Out with Kevin Costner and Sean Young never gets any love. One of my favourite twists ever.

The music in Liquid Sky and Ladies and Gentleman the Fabulous Stains is totally awesome.
Fandango is one of my favorite "least seen" movies from '85 It's a very funny and sentimental story of life decisions. Kevin Costner, Judd Nelson, Sam Robards.
The Hidden. It’s so good!
I had the pleasure of seeing Paris Texas recently, and I was really impressed by it, from the acting, to the writing. Although it's slow moving, I'd recommend sticking with it.
Great list. I have seen half of these films, but they still deserve more recognition from people that have not seen them.
Brazil is my favorite movie. I even got to shake Terry Gilliam’s hand at a Q&A once and made him laugh.

1) I got to see Liquid Sky in a retro theatre in the 1990s. Fortunately I was really high at the time.
2) I nominate the sheer lunacy of The Hidden (1987).
The Last Starfighter was one of my favorites to catch on rerun as a kid growing up in the 90s
"Come and See" as well as "Threads" are so well-done you'll never want to watch them again
And still no place for the greatest, most underrated film of all time - Streets of fire
Haven't watched the video yet but I'm gonna say "Manhunter". I would also call out the fact that all "R" rated movies suffered from this enforced rating but "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Robo-Cop" would prove me wrong.

“Disorganized Crime” from 1989 is such and underrated crime comedy. It is so good with an all star cast with Ed O’Neill, Lou Diamond Phillips, Ruben Blades, Fred Gwynne, Corbin Bernsen and others. It’s so quotable. Ruben Blades steals this one with his funny quips.
“The Hidden” from 1987 is another underrated horror sci-fi movie that’s insanely good. Easily one of the best of the ‘80s that doesn’t get much attention.
“Night of the Creeps” from 1986 is another good horror movie that I think young people would not have heard of. It’s really good with good funny dialogue, too.
“Waxwork” from 1988 is yet another great horror movie that doesn’t get any attention from the mainstream. It’s an excellent horror movie with a great cast and premise. Check it out.
“Into the Night” from 1985 is a good thriller with Jeff Goldbloom & Michelle Pfeiffer with a cameo of David Bowie in it. I remember this as a kid and thought it was pretty good.
“Class of 1984” from 1982 is a really good thriller I saw recently. I was so impressed by this movie. So good.
Does anybody remember Midnight Madness? An 80s scavenger hunt romp. No idea if it held up, but i remember loving it as a kid.

I had a copy of that and my GenZ kid stole it as it’s one of her fav all time movies. I even had to put together a scavenger hunt for her for one of her birthdays at a mall because of this movie…

What about 'Extreme Prejudice' from 1987? Starring Nick Nolte, Michael Ironside, and Clancy Brown. That movie is fantastic! But totally overlooked!
Not on this list and tragically overlooked: Miracle Mile, though when it gets dark it gets dark fast.
Come and See is one of those movies that makes you just sit there and reflect for like a half hour after it’s over! Astounding and horrifying at the same time!

Barfly. I don't know what it is about that movie but I absolutely love it. If he'd just eat a damn sandwich he would beat Frank Stallone every time!

I've never seen Brazil but immediately recognised the first gentleman in the clip as the 'high sparrow' from GOT. Never seen him outside of that role, so interesting to see him as a younger actor.

Moon Over Paradore is a marvelous comedy, with Richard Dreyfuss playing an actor, and an actor playing the deceased dictator of an obscure Latin American nation, and playing the original dictator. Raul Julia is the menacing power behind the throne - a criminally overlooked roll of his - and Sonia Braga as the dictator's mistress.
Speaking of underappreciated little Richard Dreyfuss classics, if you haven't seen his very next movie after MOP, "Let It Ride," I envy you getting the chance to see it for the very first time.
And bcs this is the ONLY way to experience movies, I'm not going to say one more word abt it; no spoilers @ all, not even a genre clue.
"My Favorite Year," from 1982. A jittery young writer on a 1950s comedy show gets assigned to babysit an aging matinee idol -- a charming but irresponsible type, played by Peter O'Toole -- who's going to be guest-starring on the show. Everything in this film works; in particular, the comedic timing, reminiscent of the screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s, is absolutely dead-on.
I loved that film. No one I know has seen it.

Although not from the 80's, I have always found these movies to be criminally underrated. The Favour, the Watch and the Very Big Fish (1991), An Everlasting Piece (2000), Plunkett & Macleane (1999)

A great "you've NEVER seen" list. I think I saw 8 out of the 10 and 5 of those I watched multiple times. The one that NEEDS to be on the NEVER seen list? Diva, 1981.

Diva is the quintessential 80's French film.

I was going to say King of New York but it was actually made in 1990, so I'll suggest "Into the night", starring Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer, it also has David Bowie in it
I own Night Of The Comet and Desert Hearts,both are great movies.
"Absolute Beginners," "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," and "The Hunger," all with David Bowie. Also Ken Russell's "Gothic," for s*its and giggles :))
Brazil is so unappreciated in the States, the unpleasant ending in the original was changed into a ridiculous ribbons and rainbows edit..
Oh Gilliam has never been shy how pissed off he was at then Universal President Sid Sheinberg for changing his original ending

@@caronstout354 I only saw the edited version on television.. So many parts were cut, it was unrecognizable.. Like watching The Exorcist on network television..
"Prince of the City" by Sidney Lumet is almost similar to "Serpico" starring Al Pacino. It was also a story about a detective investigating corruption within the police force.
Miracle Mile: Anthony Edwards receives an anonymous wrong number at a diner pay phone warning of nuclear war in an hour. How to tell people? That's the movie.
Suburbia, First Born, Prayer of the Rollerboys, Solarbabies, The Last Starfighter, Iron Eagle, The Rescue, Space Camp...............
Brazil is a certified classic. 😎
Night of the Comet is good. I rented it back in the day. Melvin and Howard is good too.

In Tampopo, interspersed with the main story are a series of short sketches on the subject of food.
Liquid Sky's Anne Carlisle later appeared in Desperately Seeking Susan.
Mystery Train features Screamin' Jay Hawkins as the desk clerk of a seedy hotel in Memphis, and Joe Strummer holding up a liquor store.
Two Australian films I'd add are the surreal Bliss (1985), and Dogs in Space (1987) featuring INXS's Michael Hutchence.
I LOVE "The Tall Guy"!

Polyester by John Waters was missing here....wildly funny movie with many one liners and ....FILMED IN ODORAMA!!
"Cutter's Way" should be on the list.
I've seen "The Tall Guy". It's pretty funny but if you want to see an obscure Jeff Goldblum film, check out "Mr. Frost". It's a thriller where Goldblum plays a man who may or may not be the devil.

Liquid Sky is truly a cult classic that is like watching a kaleidoscopic capsule in time. Very relevant today as it was now.
Paris, Texas is one of my favorite movies ever.
Come and See is the most horrifying movie I’ve ever seen.
It's the only movie I've had to stop. I took an edible and my blood pressure spiked toward the end. I stopped for about 15 minutes just to calm down a little. Truly terrifying stuff and the way it's shot perfectly captures panic
Only the Director's Cut of Brazil matters....

The Wall is the best rock movie ever conceived
The Night The Lights Ran Out In Georgia is MY honorable mention . It stars Kristy McNichol Dennis Quaid and Mark Hamill .

Brazil was orders of magnitude better than the rest. It and Night of the Comet were good for multiple viewings.
