- This video will show you how to service your 4L80E or 4L85E Transmission by replacing the filter, fluid, and pan gasket.
These transmissions are found on a number of vehicles manufactured between 1991 and present day, including the Chevrolet Express/GMC Savannah, Chevrolet Suburban 2500, Silverado/Sierra, and many others.
Transmission pan torque specs: 18 ft/lbs
You DIDN'T flush the fluid from the torque converter. And you NEVER mentioned or said ANYTHING about the fluid in the torque converter and how it will INSTANTLY contaminate the new fluid. You also showed "bad" fluid on the dip stick after changing the fluid and driving the vehicle, BUT you never indicated that it was contaminated fluid.
Hey. Thank you for your commenting, I sincerely appreciate it. The overall intent of this video was to show how to change the filter, fluid, and pan gasket and not a complete service. There are many applications by which it is a better result to just do this service versus completing a full service with a machine etc. In the future, I will be sure to create more content surrounding those protocols. For now, we show videos and create videos with what we think would be helpful to those who are servicing at home with limited tooling. As opposed to fully educational videos in the shop on the lift with machines that cost thousands of dollars that would not benefit a majority of the folks trying to service at home. @@Revitauto Generally, I'm never hostile to sources of information teaching me something new. The "youtube" situation that more than anything else "lit my fire" was my search for how to "flush" the fluid from a 4L60/80E without having "to take it to a shop." Your presentation was the FIRST one to pop-up in all the youtube presentations. You did a good job of showing how to/what to do with what you did. Might I suggest you clarify, in this video, what you "didn't do," as well as all the other good work "you did do?" Please continue the good work.
How would you go about draining the torque converter? This was a fluid change not a fluid flush, which is a completely different service
It seems your use of the term "contaminated fluid" is misleading, as the fluid is actually upgraded, or less contaminated, not more contaminated, by the process. The fluid prior to changing is used, but working.
On my 2004 GM 2500, when I remove the plug in the transmission pan, about 4.7 quarts of ATF runs out. The total ATF capacity is 13.6 quarts, per one spec I found. So, when I replace the 4.7 quarts of used ATF with new, the total ATF has then gone from 100% old to about 35% new.
The fluid was dark and burnt smelling when I bought the vehicle, but after doing this procedure every 5000 miles (directly after road trips to "mix it up"), 5 times, the ATF seems now seems pretty clean, and I work it hard pulling big trailers.
The cost: About $22 per "swap" (Valvoline Full Syn, Dextron VI spec), times 5 = $110. And I burn the old fluid in my forge and foundry furnace. A pretty cheap upgrade to my way of thinking.
Cns30 is wrong. I do a gallon swap all the time using my vacuum process I have a video on. There is nothing about ‘contaminating’ the fluid. Doing a gallon swap over the many years on my 04 suburban has got it to 279K miles. Don’t listen to his negative comments

Thank you for the kind words, I do not unfortunately have a video on how to replace or check the valve body. I will say that if you had a failure to a transmission line and the trans was operated without fluid the most likely result is a damaged or burned clutch, not likely for it to be a failed valve body.
What is the level of the trans fluid while on a level surface and the engine running? Does it smell burnt or look dirty? Happy Motoring, Blair

How much oil,needs to add in transportation
how much fluid did you have to add? Chevy owners manual provides the total capacity for the transmission (13.5 quarts), but does not say approximately how much to add to fill after pan gasket/filter replacement. The torque converter will still be holding a lot of fluid after pan removal.
Usually around 4 to 5 quarts if you're only changing the filter.
I measure the fluid that runs out, then just add that much back. About 150 ounces on my 2004 GM 2500 (has a drain plug in pan).

My drain plug is stripped 15mm is a bit too big and 14mm too small.

I have a question about a 2008 Chevy Express van does the transmission have a drain tube question mark and how much does a 6.0 l transmission how much fluid do you put in it?
Hey Tim, can you share your VIN? I will look up the specs on that unit. Typically they will have a drain plug or you have to do it the messier way! You could also try sucking some fluid out of the transmission dip stick fill tube! I hope this helps. Happy Motoring-Blair
Any tips putting the pan back on with the gasket ? Keep hitting the shield and then having to fix gasket.
Use an adhesive made for gaskets. put the adhesive on the pan, line up the holes, then put a weight to hold the gasket flat until adhesive is holding. If necessary, tie strings thru some holes on the trouble side. Start a couple of bolts in the opposite side, loose, then take out the string.
I was looking for info on a complete fluid change, it should take about 13 quarts, do you have a video or do you know how to do this

I own an 01 Suburban 2500 8.1 4x4.
The 2 rear trans pan bolts are blocked by the rear cross-member !

How many miles were on this transmission? Was it slipping?
About 130k miles. It was not shifting smoothly, after service it returned to normal operation. Happy Motoring- Blair
What is the exact type of automatic transmission fluid used in a 1999 suburban diesel?
Hey Thomas, I always recommend using a oem fluid from the dealer or calling your auto parts store and asking for what is the most current recommended fluid is. Happy Motoring, fyi we use Burn Rubber Brewing brand transmission fluid.
Previously, it was Dexron II, & III. However, GM uses Dexron VI now, which you can/should use. I believe you have a 4L80-E transmission: 4 - 6 quarts (dropping pan, & filter ONLY), or 13.5 quarts (total transmission change/ Flush). Can also use Valvoline dex/merc (Blue bottle), its considerably cheaper than genuine GM fluid. Good luck folks.

Of course, 6 liters for a 4l60 transmission, but be careful not to damage the transmission if the oil in it is burnt.

Would a 93 G20 have this transmission ?

That’s only changing 10% of the oil. The rest is in the torque converter.

Sorry you found this video to be a waste of time. You can measure the fluid yourself with the dipstick. For this specific model we installed around 7 quarts into the pan. Different vehicles and different pan configurations will have different volumes. Good luck out there.
