Love this guy. Unpretentious, really loves vinyl, holds his records with care, and one of the best Crate Digger DJs I've seen. It would be fun to see him at work!
He started out in DJing in Atlas Bar when I used to work there when I was a student. Him on the decks then over to the Hacienda when my shift finished. Crazy, happy days.

I can not stop watching this series my god i love it cause i am this level of record nerd I mean i am deeply obsessed and been collecting 20 years !!
Surprised an American company is interviewing the legend that is, Mr. Scruff. America wasn't born-and-bred for electronic music like the UK even though house and techno was found in Chicago and Detroit.
Living Legend! Saw him NYE in Manchester for his famed 9 hour sets...what a master class journey!! Big Up the Scruffington! Oh and at the end he was there at the front of the club greeting people in person!! Humble Legend!!
He's a total legend and does an awesome DJ set. I remember he played in a local club in Dundee and they set up the mezzanine as a coffee shop with his people he brought. Very good vibes. Luv and Peace.
Brilliant and as a wedding / corporate DJ most of the time I really relate to your comments about encompassing the crowd in your music choices combining that with club sensibilities when playing to a more expectant crowd always works for me. Top episode.
Al Redman I was honestly thinking the same thing the other day. I do understand that it's cool to have the first press especially if it's a different color or package but in the end I just want the music too.
+Al Redman If you have something from the time it was made, it feels like you have some relic from that time it was released in your hands. Hard to explain.. But yeah many go way too far with it, prices i wont pay ;)
i thought that shit only happen'd to me....i talk about records all day and then i go to the record store and my brain completely flatline's EVERY TIME
Great episode and great musical philosophy. I have been waiting for one of the dj's in this series to down talk serato and stand up for their vinyl collection! So nice to see that one (and I think he is the first one) of all these guys featured in this great series actually uses his vinyls when he is dj'ing! Almost all the great vinyl cratediggers/djs are using serato now a days. I understand it's easier and you have effects and instant doubles and all. And if you travel the world and dj all the time, then it's so much easier. But where is the love for the format and your record collection? Now everybody can download everything, and have all the rare tunes. The dj hides behind a computer and play by BPM instead of by heart and feeling. I think it's kinda sad. Mr. Scruff, you are the man!!!
this came on in the background while i was working and focused on something else, hearing it on the peripheral after 30 seconds i thought this guy sounds legit and here i am ;) correct in my assessment, mr scruff indeed seems like a decent bloke ;)
Always fascinated me as to how they amass such a vast collection due to its cost! Presumably he was buying large collections and discarding bits he didnt want?
id like to know your opinion of dollar binz. all album are just one dollar, and ive bought 30 inthe last two weeks of me going in and out of there. you just have to be VERY VERY Careful and check out the disc lp very closely. ive got bitten only once, and well i ahd the album already but i love having sometimes two of a certain person. but YES. what do you think of the 1 Dollar binz. here,in america
i doubt that. although collectors and dj's - two groups i do belong to - do know a shitload of stuff about music and records there's always a ton of stuff we don't know. that's why we're collecting and looking out for more unheard stuff. plus: i'm pretty sure if you found one record that is both in my and in mr. scruff's collection we'd be telling you totally different things about it because each collector / dj has a different focus and also different memories attached to specific records.
It’s super pretentious to assume that “taking requests” during a serious paid DJ set is nothing more than, “oh, I’ve never heard of that record; I should give it a go.” That is a problem. A true performing DJ would never play a song they have never heard well.
Love this guy. Unpretentious, really loves vinyl, holds his records with care, and one of the best Crate Digger DJs I've seen. It would be fun to see him at work!
Saw him once in montreal in maybe 2001-2002-2003... minute for minute i have never seen a funkier dj set.
He started out in DJing in Atlas Bar when I used to work there when I was a student. Him on the decks then over to the Hacienda when my shift finished. Crazy, happy days.
I can not stop watching this series my god i love it cause i am this level of record nerd I mean i am deeply obsessed and been collecting 20 years !!
i feel you.
"Keep it Unreal" was the first electronic album I ever got... love this guy!
Opens the interview with such humbleness
Surprised an American company is interviewing the legend that is, Mr. Scruff. America wasn't born-and-bred for electronic music like the UK even though house and techno was found in Chicago and Detroit.
Yoooo please make more episodes of this I still watch these 5-6 years later and they’re amazing please fuse!!!!
helped him set up for an interview when I was at uni. had a great chat with him about African music.
Living Legend! Saw him NYE in Manchester for his famed 9 hour sets...what a master class journey!! Big Up the Scruffington! Oh and at the end he was there at the front of the club greeting people in person!! Humble Legend!!
never heard of him but he seems like he genuinely cares about the integrity of music. He knows his stuff too!
Joel Henderson he's the guy that done ninja tuna on the windows 7 sample music playlist
he's good look "music takes me up" and "pickled spiders" you also might like "sweetsmoke"
Had the honour of hearing him play live in Rotterdam, Netherlands.. MAAAAN!!! Eclectic beast DJ/producer.. Check him out if he comes to your town
He's a total legend and does an awesome DJ set.
I remember he played in a local club in Dundee and they set up the mezzanine as a coffee shop with his people he brought.
Very good vibes.
Luv and Peace.
one of the most fun DJs I've seen!!!)
Refreshing honesty. So many DJ's are up themselves, and have only a fraction of his knowledge.
Brilliant and as a wedding / corporate DJ most of the time I really relate to your comments about encompassing the crowd in your music choices combining that with club sensibilities when playing to a more expectant crowd always works for me. Top episode.
mr.scruff is an absolute legend and learnt a lot more from this great interview..love his artwork too...a proper dj who knows his stuff.
Wow that Alice Clark record is super rare. Scruff is such a chill and humble dude.
Great album!!
I bloody love these crate digger sessions
me too but i think the "story time" sort of parts where they have an artist tell us a misleading story is a bit unnecessary.
Just recently found about them, probably one of the best things on youtube
If you have a chance to see him live, take it. Dude's like a fish in water.
A freshwater fish, with under water weapons.
In and out like a trout
Two fine trout
Interesting chap. Very honest, humble and likeable,
Mr Scruff is awesome. Go see him live, it's a great (5 hour) experience, you can check some of these sets on his Soundcloud. Dude knows his shit
Thanks .Andy Mrs Scuff, such a pleasant insight into your nucleus of vinyl addition,
1 of the best of this series .. Cheers
Keep it Solid Steel is one of my favorite mixes. Beautiful mixing through the genres. Definitely worth a listen if you've not heard it
I love Mr. Scruff. Great blending of genres into something greater than the sum of the parts.
>No musical stone left unturned

Crazy vinyl collections in these vids going to add these to my daily vlogs!
whenever there's vinyl there's stuff to talk about. one of the reasons why i set up a youtube channel.
I totally agree with what he said about the 1st press "Trophy" complex, If it sounds just as good on a re issue, who cares?
Al Redman I was honestly thinking the same thing the other day. I do understand that it's cool to have the first press especially if it's a different color or package but in the end I just want the music too.
Julian Wyllie Yeah it's cost dependent I suppose
+Al Redman If you have something from the time it was made, it feels like you have some relic from that time it was released in your hands. Hard to explain.. But yeah many go way too far with it, prices i wont pay ;)
A real education Andy alway love hearing you talk about music…. one. b
The heir to John peel???
Get this guy on the radio!
That's the most sensible thing I've heard all week!
That's a bloody good idea.
Nice idea, but who would want to work for the BBC these days?
Love it! A guy that knows his rare disco/soul.
i thought that shit only happen'd to me....i talk about records all day and then i go to the record store and my brain completely flatline's EVERY TIME

Mr. Scruff, you are the man!!!
enjoyed every minute of this.
totally agree on his approach towards vinyl dj'ing... i do follow the same path for similar reasons.
Legend. Superb slector
Respect sir. I’m vinyl only when I dj for all the reasons you mentioned and wouldn’t have it any other way. I love selecting my stuff for the night.
The man likes Roland Kirk. I'm impressed. Very impressed.

this came on in the background while i was working and focused on something else, hearing it on the peripheral after 30 seconds i thought this guy sounds legit and here i am ;) correct in my assessment, mr scruff indeed seems like a decent bloke ;)

You are an excellent storyteller, Mr Scruff. You really... Wait for it.... "Get a Move on.." haha
Thumbs up.

Eating fish
What scruff doesn't know about music you could fit it on a match box...
i doubt that. although collectors and dj's - two groups i do belong to - do know a shitload of stuff about music and records there's always a ton of stuff we don't know. that's why we're collecting and looking out for more unheard stuff.

I agree the song is good as it is don't touch otherwise WHY are you playing it to begin with?
first?
the comments here aren't real. "He Rocks...he needs to DJ...know his stuff..." crap...
It’s super pretentious to assume that “taking requests” during a serious paid DJ set is nothing more than, “oh, I’ve never heard of that record; I should give it a go.”
