  • Sometimes a character is a big hit right out of the gate, sometimes it takes decades to finally get things right. So was the case with the Man Without Fear. Created to ride on the popularity of Spider-Man, he remained untapped potential for 16 years until he was reinvented by Frank Miller into the popular character he is today. Since then, he has enjoyed more great runs than the majority of Marvel characters, swinging between brooding and happy-go-lucky, but never dull. These are every Daredevil run since his first appearance.
    The essential reading order goes as follows:
    The Man Without Fear - by Frank Miller
    Daredevil: Yellow - by Jeff Loeb (optional, but recommended)
    Frank Miller's first run
    Born Again - Miller's magnum opus
    Elektra Assassin (read as a flashback)
    Love and War - Graphic Novel
    Ann Nocenti's run (optional, but recommended)
    Elektra Lives Again - Graphic Novel
    Guardian Devil - by Kevin Smith - v2's first arc
    Brian Michael Bendis run - v2
    Ed Brubaker's run - v2
    Mark Waid's run - v3 & v4
    Chip Zdarsky's run - v6 & v7
    Top Ten ranks as follows:
    Born Again
    Frank Miller's first run
    The Man Without Fear
    Brian Michael Bendis run - v2
    Ed Brubaker's run - v2
    Mark Waid's run - v3 & v4
    Chip Zdarsky's run - v6 & v7
    Guardian Devil - by Kevin Smith - v2's first arc
    Love and War - Graphic Novel
    Daredevil: Yellow

    Your video is more informative than a 40-minute meaningless chatter with the same Miller and Bendis all over the place. Very good list. Thanks!

      Daredevil was something of a tryout before I tackled a more complex character. But Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men are definitely coming soon.

    The Nocenti run might be my favorite , actually. The O’Neill run was also good from what I read. Did you like the Fall Of The Kingpin story in #300? David Mack’s run should be in the Top10, as well.

    • @comicbelief
      @comicbelief  Місяць тому

      The fall of the Kingpin was my very first Daredevil comic. I did like it a lot and I think it holds up pretty well. Though the rest of Chichester’s run was atrocious. I love Nocemti’s run. I don’t think it gets nearly the love it deserves, mostly for coming right after Born Again. While I like Mack, I’m not sure I can call his work on Daredevil a proper run, more like scattered stories. They may be good, but they don’t stack up against more lengthy runs, and Daredevil has a lot of great, lengthy runs.

    Fantastic video. Liked, subbed, and commenting. My onlyyy critique is that some of the run descriptions seem to have given a little bit more away ab the story/plot than I would’ve liked to know about before reading. So some of them kinda felt like spoilers. Maybe that’s just me. But this was a VERY well made video that was easy to follow and I look forward to seeing more videos in the future from you. Thank you for taking the time to make this and help out the ever growing community!

    Honestly, Diggle and Soule weren't bad runs. They certainly weren't top ten, but they're fine enough.

    • @comicbelief
      @comicbelief  Рік тому

      Diggle’s was ok. It probably suffered from coming after Bendis and Brubaker, but it gets the job done, even if the plot is not the most original. Soule, I admit that I deeply dislike. To me, he seems to have an idea and then squeeze the character into it, no matter how clumsily. After giving Daredevil a sidekick and making everyone forget who he is, reading the rest of his run felt like unpleasant homework. He did the same thing in Inhumans Vs X-Men.

    • @rickrivers2021
      @rickrivers2021 Рік тому +2

      @@comicbelief For Soule, I think putting off the explanation of the returned secret identity was lazy and awkward. That said, ultimately I'm glad that he did get it back. Bendis, Brubaker, and the first half of Waid were really interesting with exploring the world being pretty sure they knew who DD was, but unable to quite prove it. However, I think Waid's run really went downhill after the relaunch where Matt had already outed himself and now was running around San Francisco in a suit and tie and publishing an autobiography for millions. It just wasn't DD anymore
      I'm not bothered with Blindspot bc he was ultimately only being trained by DD pretty briefly. It's not like a Batman and Robin sort of thing, it's just an older superhero briefly mentoring a younger one, who then goes their own route.
      There are definitely things in the run I think are lame though. The flashback purple man story just seemed clunky. And the whole dream sequence thing towards the end was just weird and anti-climactic. But on the whole, I liked the rest. I thought Muse was an especially interesting villain. I give it a B-

    • @comicbelief
      @comicbelief  Рік тому +2

      @@rickrivers2021 I completely agree about the end of Waid’s run. I knew the whole identity saga would be rebooted eventually, like Spider-Man’s was. I see it as an inevitable cycle in comics. Good writers push characters into unknown territory, then less gifted writers return to a comfort zone of predictable behavior. I just wish it was handled better. There was a story with Daredevil and Spider-Man (don’t remember the issue right now) after the whole memory wipe. Because they didn’t have the bond of knowing each other, their whole history changed. It just felt off. I understand how you can focus on Soule’s qualities and appreciate him. In the end, it comes down to a personal preference, I suppose. The things I value in a writer I just don’t find in him.

    Finished MWF recently is it just fine if I skip immediately to Zdarsky's 2019 run next?

    • @comicbelief
      @comicbelief  10 місяців тому +2

      You can, but I wouldn’t. All you need to know prior to Zdarsky’s run is that Daredevil is not in his best shape and nobody remembers his identity. But the run also plays heavily with his history with Elektra and the Kingpin. You can read it, enjoy it, infer what you don’t know from context, like most comics… but if you’re not in a hurry, I’d follow Miller’s Man Without Fear with Miller’s origin run, then Born Again. They are foundational to the character.

      @@instantramen4588 After Miller, I’d say Kevin Smith’s Guardian Devil storyline (Daredevil v2 #1-8), Brian Michel Bendis’ run (Daredevil v2 #26-81), Ed Brubaker’s run (Daredevil v2 #82-119, 500) and Mark Waid’s run (Daredevil v3 and v4) are the highlights. Of these, Bendis ranks the highest.
