The Moral Letter to Lucilius are a collection of 124 letters which were written by Seneca the Younger at the end of his life, during his retirement, and written after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. (These Moral Letters are the same letters which Tim Ferriss promotes in the Tao of Seneca)

It's a truly beautiful thing to be at peace with dying in this body. I concluded many years ago that our true nature is not pertinent to this body -- to say it plainly, we are not our bodies. But because men are debased, crude, immoral, unjust, carnal, and all the like, they are fooled into thinking their life consists in only that which is physical - the thought of losing all they lived for seems terrible. Hence, why most are afraid of dying and try to ignore the thought of it.
I remember a statement earlier in this letter series where he mentioned how even when people are old and near death they are concerned with worldly things as if they were going to live forever. I also have marveled at this over the years and how people who are clearly near death still have their minds completely focused on outwardly things. Perhaps, this is only appearance, since I'm sure they are aware of their situation. It could just be they're trying to distract themselves from the glaring reality they face.

You're so wrong. You are just carrying the remnants of Christian nihilism and the hatred of life. To deny your body is to retreat from life and to put the centre of gravity in nothing.. You are just retreating from life. I dont see any of this denial of the physical world in stoicism

@@malikialgeriankabyleswag4200 You should be less judgmental and more understanding - I'm none of what you say. I'm not sure what Christian nihilism is, that seems like a contradiction in terms. I know life has meaning, and my whole purpose of intent centers around what I know is true, and that reflects in who I am. I cherish and take care of my body as I consider my responsibility to do so. I have been given a healthy body and keep it in proper shape and nourish it with good nutrition. I only deny my body carnal pleasures which I know to be evil and destructive to the soul. To gratify the body with carnal living that is contrary to spiritual perfection is nothing more than slavery and weakness. I have conquered the unnecessary lusts of the flesh and seek spiritual perfection, because true life and happiness and contentment consists in the spiritual, not the physical.
