We visited the House not long after the Trust opened it up but not had a look since at how the preservation effort had gone. We have been many times to walk the garden and estate. Next time I will take a wander through the House again. I did not really enjoy all the taxidermy though. Another great day out. Best wishes to you both. Ivor & Robert
Hi Ivor and Robert thank you for your support and comments. The house is fascinating as there is so much contrast from the beautiful silk bed to everyday objects. The taxidermy is fortunately something that has had its day it seems so inappropriate nowadays but guess at the time they didn't quite see it like that when we were young boys were still collecting eggs which also seems so wrong nowadays. There ia always so much to see in these homes isn't there? The furniture, paintings not to mention ceilings- you really covered the content so well. Then those birds-mammals oh dear not to my liking nut belongs in that era. I have a really good impression of this Stately - Unstately home. I am glad it is being preserved for future generations. What a beautiful building. It looks like something straight out of Downton Abbey. The table around the fireplace was so interesting. That must have been an impressive staircase Its sad to see how the building has declined but it is interesting that the National Trust have chosen to preserve rather than repair. The tunnels were really cool. xxx

Very well produced video as always, Dave and Dawn. We went to Calle Abbey about 15 years ago, in the days before we started making videos, and there have been quite a few improvements since then. Some of the owners of large stately homes were truly eccentric.

Hi Dave and Dawn! Fabulous! A great tour around Calke ! The last Henry who passed the house to The NT was so dissappointed that they did not restore the house, throughout all his talks with them prior to handing calke over it had been his understanding that it would be restored which had been his ambition... the dining room shows how this might have looked. It is sad to see tge state of some of the rooms and you can only imagine how splendid it would look if it was restored to its heyday. It does however give an insight into how many of these large houses must have ended up in the end as the wealth of the families dwindled over the generations. We are so lucky that the NT and similar organisations have taken on so many of these properties and maintain them for future us to enjoy. We like to see the contrasting condition of the properties and feel so fortunate that we live in a time where we are allowed to wander through them and enjoy the beauty they offer. They were great horders we liked that they kept broken chairs, and there was a dog with one leg broken that had a matchbox keeping it upright. Enjoyed that, we visited Calle-Abbey when it first opened many years ago and joined the National Trust there and then! Wished we had joined as life members it would have been great value! You reminded us of the darkened room containing the fantastic Chinese silk bed drapery. Thank you. Best wishes.

The grounds are fantastic too we go for a walk there when we can. Visited Calke Abbey many many times and a few years ago I was lucky enough to be picked as a test guest for the new guided house tour with some new staff. For this we were given access to areas not accessed to the public and also time alone in the tunnels with a staffer. 😊 did you hear or see the runing water in the tunnels? We put some Dye in to see where is flowed it as they didn’t know where it went. Also did you see the Stalactite in the ice house? Have a great weekend! 😊

We have been in the ice house many times but have to say have never seen the stalagtite we will have to look a bit harder as we are visiting again with Daves sister next week. They do it at Halloween and that is fantastic. I bet they were not quite as nice when the servants had to bring the 🍺 beer through them, although the guides said they were given a daily ration of beer although the servants was lower strength than the brew the families had 😆. Another fascinating place from you both. I really enjoyed watching this. I loved the restored dining room, it was beautiful. That room with the rocking horse and dolls house in it was quite spooky! Putting the lights in the tunnel was a nice touch too! Hope you've had a lovely weekend xx
Hi Stacey it was really a house of contrasts some rooms you can see the luxury and wealth but others are very tatty and full of everything you could imagine. It would definitely be spooky in there at night. The tunnels are fantastic they decorate them at Halloween 🎃 which is always fun. Hi Dave and Dawn! Fabulous! A great tour around Calke ! The last Henry who passed the house to The NT was so dissappointed that they did not restore the house, throughout all his talks with them prior to handing calke over it had been his understanding that it would be restored which had been his ambition... the dining room shows how this might have looked. You gave us a great insight into the houses history... The Tunnels are very atmospheric aren't they! Another great video Guys... Best wishes Neil and Ant 😊

It is sad to see tge state of some of the rooms and you can only imagine how splendid it would look if it was restored to its heyday. It does however give an insight into how many of these large houses must have ended up in the end as the wealth of the families dwindled over the generations. We are so lucky that the NT and similar organisations have taken on so many of these properties and maintain them for future us to enjoy. We like to see the contrasting condition of the properties and feel so fortunate that we live in a time where we are allowed to wander through them and enjoy the beauty they offer. They were great horders we liked that they kept broken chairs, and there was a dog with one leg broken that had a matchbox keeping it upright. Enjoyed that, we visited Calle-Abbey when it first opened many years ago and joined the National Trust there and then! Wished we had joined as life members it would have been great value! You reminded us of the darkened room containing the fantastic Chinese silk bed drapery. Thank you. Best wishes.

The grounds are fantastic too we go for a walk there when we can. Visited Calke Abbey many many times and a few years ago I was lucky enough to be picked as a test guest for the new guided house tour with some new staff. For this we were given access to areas not accessed to the public and also time alone in the tunnels with a staffer. 😊 did you hear or see the runing water in the tunnels? We put some Dye in to see where is flowed it as they didn’t know where it went. Also did you see the Stalactite in the ice house? Have a great weekend! 😊

We have been in the ice house many times but have to say have never seen the stalagtite we will have to look a bit harder as we are visiting again with Daves sister next week. Hi guys thank you so much. The house is fascinating and there are so many things in there to see. The tunnels are great especially when they decorate them. They do it at Halloween and that is fantastic. I bet they were not quite as nice when the servants had to bring the 🍺 beer through them, although the guides said they were given a daily ration of beer although the servants was lower strength than the brew the families had 😆.
