Top 7 Reasons Why Shalimar Is A Men's Fragrance

  • Welcome to me! Raffi
    I wax philosophical about fragrances.
    Today it's Shalimar eau de toilette by Guerlain:
    It's 1925 & Guerlain drops Shalimar, unquestionably a fragrance for women...but it's 2020 & things sure have changed, especially in perfumery.
    My 'isolation beard' may be long but this video is not, I don't like to waffle on about things like this.
    Please enjoy my breakdown & review of this classic scent & if it pleases you to see more fragrance reviews in my (hopefully) unique style, then please do the youtube stuff of like, share, subscribe & leave a lovely comment.
    I hope my future self will be kind enough to reply, because i'm always a nice person...in the future.

    A quite enjoyable video indeed. I loved it!
    Shalimar is my favorite perfume and it suits anyone who likes it.
    Actually when it was created women hated it and thought it was too dark, indecent and on the male side. Then Parisian men started wearing it. Then ladies of the night were the first women who wore it, so their customers didn’t smell like a woman’s perfume and keep them from having problems at home. Very considerate and clever.
    It took Guerlain a while to convince their female customers to wear it.
    But yes, you are right Shalimar is for men or women.

    I love your thoughts on stereotypes of masculinity and femininity, conformity, and marketing in the world of fragrances. 💗👍 I'm a man that wears scents marketed to women without shame or apology, including Shalimar EdP.
    Not only am I subscribing, I'm doing so enthusiastically.
    You seem like a genuinely cool person.

      There's a whole bunch of frags that my mum and aunties wore while I was growing up which i'd be doing a disservice to if I didn't wear them (any excuse will do) 😁😁

    As a woman, I adore Shalimar. But I do have to get through that poopy baby diaper stage. That stage....It almost makes me feel sick to my stomach sometimes. But the dry down is just absolutely amazing. Powdery Vanilla incense heaven.

    • @RaffiDiranBassclef
      @RaffiDiranBassclef  3 роки тому +1

      That drydown is superb! I spray on clothes and revisit the day after. I recently added Habit Rouge to my collection, which I will refer to as 'the men's Shalimar', prepping for a video 😁

    I usually prefered female fragrances. I love flowers, vainilla, ambar... And male fragrances are always spiced or leathered, serious hard and boring. Also male bottles are always squared and sad, serious, boring... Female packagings are always fantasious and funny.

  • @person318
    @person318 2 роки тому +1

    As a woman, I think I like it so much because it's a more masculine fragrance... People tell me smells like men or old lady from the bottle. However when I wear it, people always compliment me on the warm, sexy and powerful smell. I would call this a men's perfume simply because it agrees well with many men but only with a certain amount of women

    I have Shalimar edp and edt and Shalimar Initial. I love them all and I use the edp as a base for some perfumes that I don't get on so well with on their own (I'm looking at you, La vie est belle). I'm going to try it with Mon Guerlain...... See if it makes that beauty last a little longer.

    I love to wear it, nice memories of 30 years ago. If the EdP is more fitting to 20 years your elder it fits to my age, so your beard makes you far older than you are. Personally to me it does not have any past climacterium reputation, just the opposit - personal story. So many females wear gent parfumes, eastern houses label most fragrances as unisex now. Shalimar is as well not sweet, not flowery but more a little bit animalic, very versatile and unique. It has many Guerlain flankers, but not a single dupe, that I know to have been discussed here. Why? Is it no big seller, nor a discussion anymore?

    • @RaffiDiranBassclef
      @RaffiDiranBassclef  2 роки тому

      I recently tested out Chanel's new one called Le Lion & it smells very very similar to Shalimar, but to me they dried down different

    • @schattensand
      @schattensand 2 роки тому

      @@RaffiDiranBassclef First: The after drydown is what you sense 95% of the time. Second: Shalimar does not have a spectacular opening, Citrus, Bergamotte is so universally used, bit boring to me anyway. Third: A Channel smellalike can walletwise per se not be a dupe. Usually their products are even more expensive in the middle than the Guerlain ones. A Armaf or a Afnan would be. Since that does not exist it shoes me. It is not easy to recreate it. No wonder, there are so many notes in it, the longevity is enormous - to me at least. It is so unique. Btw, I like the simplicity of your set. No big batteries of stuff to show of, more a student space, very basic. Makes you more interesting - unique again.

    Your 40 years too late. I wore Shalimar and Vol de Nuit back in the 70's, still do. I only use extrait . I like Shalimar better than its older brother Jicky. Come to think of it, Liu ain't bad either. Best, mark.

      There is just something about Guerlain fragrances, I have used Caron, Fragonard, Patou, Chanel, Corday, Coty, Lelong, D'orsay, Vigny, Houbigant (the real Houbigant) and I have always gone back to Jacque Guerlains work.
