Traditionalists HATE This Controversial “Fly”

- In 1972, 12-year-old Chris Furia of Colorado created the Pistol Pete, a pattern that has garnered significant popularity since its creation. This design agitates the water and creates a spinner-like action, attracting fish in dark waters and triggering strikes. Here I draw inspiration from both the wooly bugger and Mickey Finn fly patterns, the Pistol Pete has become a staple in many anglers' arsenals.
However, a debate persists over whether the Pistol Pete qualifies as a fly pattern or a lure. Traditionalists argue that the inclusion of a spinner categorizes it as a lure, thus disqualifying it from “pure” fly fishing practices. What are your thoughts on this?
Regardless of its classification, one cannot deny the effectiveness of the Pistol Pete-it's a deadly pattern that can help you catch more fish!

I have found it useful as a trolling fly , casting it can be an issue if you are using lower weight fly rods, the other issue is the blade loading up with organic matter like weeds and debris the spacing of the blade is important . It works better in a river with the current assisting it , the distance not being as critical as opposed to still waters , I use it in still waters and you will catch just about anything with it.
Mickey Finn woolybugger style, had to tie some in a hurry😊. Thanks for upload.
My local Bass Pro sells egg cluster "flies" that are literally just soft plastic beads glued to a hook. If you ask me, this thing is way more of a fly than those.
That is a real pattern and it’s very successful in Oregon where I live but the egg should be melted on not glued
@@Joe-m5w I'm not saying I wouldn't use them, I just would have a hard time calling it a fly when nothing is actually tied on to the hook.
Beautiful fly! I love the unique design with the propeller. Tight lines! 😎🎣

Your fly tying is top shelf
These are deadly. Try it with olive barred chickaboo, weighted, with a dark bead. Makes a nice sculpin.
That’s just crazy work
Its just a wooly bugger with a couple extra steps. Its a fly.
I like the propeller added in front.

I love Pistol Pete's it's the very first fly I've ever used to catch trout and they work I still use them to this day but I follow you and learn how to tie flies traditionally which I really enjoy it is my passion
Glad you enjoy them. This is not something I have used much, but I might have to try it out next time I go out. Maybe mess around with more spinner patterns.
# flys This was great! I think in the most common sense of the word it is a fly! Flys should be ever changing and rely on the fisherman's ingenuity and pleasure of change. I love it! Thank you for another one, I'll be trying and tying this one.
Does the propeller work. I tried this but prop did not spin.
I like that you posted the materials. (Links) #flies
What’s to hate about #flies that hook lips?!
feathered lure. =)
Have tried a few of these in rivers. No luck yet.
#flies. you. are. killin'. it.
This is an amazing fly/lure thing. just lovely.
G’morning. I’m calling this one a fly. It becomes a spinner if attached to a shank and spin blade. Twirl it and hurl it!
I use those alot
#flies interesting, ive always thought about attempting to use some of those ultra ultra light spinner rigs with flies attached on my fly rod but swap out the stimulator for something else, looks like it was already a done deal before i got started.
It's a Fly De Lur!😅
that would be illegal here for salmon, but just fine for trout
I have seen some crazy $#!t tied to a hook and called a fly so for me it is a fly ! HASH TAG FLIES ? HASTAGFLIES ? #FLIES !
I'll tell you something I tied several 100's of dozens of this type of fly for a shop I can still tie this fly in my sleep alot of guys wouldn't even talk to me because of tying that fly but I don't care been tying for over 40 years and do it for the love and passion it's either part of your life or not
I think in my country in midfle europe this is illegal coz of the proppeler. I think we cant use anything more than fly without any aditions thad might atract fish more. But cool fly tho
oh interesting didn't know that, technically its not a fly where I'm from but no one would bother you if you used it
That's definitely unique. I'm not sure if I would consider it a fly. When I think of flies, I think of natural food imitations for fish, and I can't picture what this would imitate. Doesn't mean it's not a fly, just my thoughts.

Can you cast it with a fly fishing outfit?
Then it’s a fly !
Ok ; let’s see how this goes …
If you are trolling this fly/lure ,are with fly fishing gear , are you “mooching”?
If you can cast, its a fly.
Two words: live bait.
That’s not a fly. You can cast a jig head with a plastic grub in the back. That’s not fly fishing.
Last year I started to put propels in front of my tubeflies and this not that diffrent so yes it's a fly 😊
id say its more of a hybrid fly then a lure looks great to me i tie minnow patterns with plastic lips again hybrid not a lure still a fly.
Thats a fair description of it. I just picked up some plastic lips and am excited to start tying with them
If I were a fly, I could fly.
I call it a non- traditional fly.

That would be illegal in the "fly only" waters I fish. Sure you can cast it on a fly rod, but a roostertail has feathers tied on it's hook and you can cast one on a fly rod too, so is it a fly too? If you're going to differentiate between flies and spinners I think a metal blade is a good place to do it.
For me it is a real good fly #flies with pro prop i use for little streamers👍🏻
Not considered a fly in FFO water in New Hampshire. That being said I don’t have a problem with using it on other waters. I bet tank scrubbers love it.
it's considered a fly by everyone, everywhere. People who consider this to be a lure are pretensious boneheads who give fly fishing a bad reputation anyways.
#flies. I love this fly. Beautiful!!!!
A #flies with flight potential.
Streamers with spinners are deadly. I use em
Absolutely! I just like poking the bear haha!
fun! #flies
#flies an excellent fly overall.
