I have to disagree on the spore mines and the biovore most of all, the point of the mines is to not include them in your army, and have lots of units of biovores shoot at a unit that cannot target anything due to obscuring terrain, have the biovores MISS, then place the spore mines (because spore mines do not cost reinforcement points when added in this way) in a way so your opponent cannot easily get a line of sight because the spore mines have prevented your opponent from moving into line of sight as the opponent cannot move near them. plus if they do end up too close to the mines extra mortal wounds are always nice. this is how do beat kastelan robots.

    • @_Aly_00_
      @_Aly_00_ 4 роки тому +1

But you could just take an exocrine for each full size unit for biovores. An enemy unit also can't target anything if its dead. The one thing biovores do have over exocrine though is line of sight.

@@jacksontrotter7608 you do make a fair point, but spore mines do not cost reinforcement points if added to your army via biovores, which have been seen in some competitive lists due to the fact that they do not need line of sight and can deny objectives with spore mines.

I think that's more the Biovore being underrated than Spore Mines, if anything. You would never take Spore Mines if you weren't getting them for free if your intent was to win, and if you could opt to make Biovores generate the same point value in almost literally anything else, I feel Mines would just get zero use period.
Biovores have neat application, but, it's not like you're getting Mines for "free", their value is coming out of the Biovore, and buying a Biovore with the intent of missing to create free Mines, is just paying the Biovore's cost for Mines.

I wish GW hadn't completely forgotten about Tyranids on the modelling side. There's literally been 129 Marine kits since Tyranids last got a model released. Nobody knows how to get rid of their neverending reinforcements.
Chaos can't be killed of without killing every living being in the galaxy, and Nids, well, it seems what we have seen so far is only a scouting party. xD
So far the necrons seem to have the only viable solution: disintegrate all biomass/ life.
That would end with both Chaos and Nids failing... but who except necrons wants THAT.

I gotta disagree on a few calls you made here. Swarmlord is easily 4 stars for the Hive Commander ability. The only thing Nids have going for them is their mobility, and this guy provides that in spades. Tyranid Prime is kinda trash, as its only use is buffing Warriors. Genestealers cost too much to be higher than 3 stars anymore. You're just straight up wrong about the Maleceptor. You don't take it for Psychic Overload, but for its Encephalic Diffusion strat. Reducing the Str of incoming fire is amazing, when you can knock Bolters down to 3 str. Suddenly, marines are wounding our chaff on 4s, and our bigger bugs on 5s and 6s. The Lictor is 5 stars, but not for the reasons you list. It's straight awful in melee, and struggles to even kill a single Primaris Marine. What you take it for is a 37 pt investment to guarantee scoring Deploy Scramblers. The pts you put in vs the VP you get out is an amazing deal. For Shrikes, I don't think they are long for this world. They only appear in the Index from 8th edition. Likely they're getting the Legends treatment. I think your math is off on the Trygon Prime. It's only 190 pts. According to the Munitorum Field Manual, you only need to pay the 30 points once, not for each set. Lastly, you omitted the Hierodules from Heavy Support, and the Dimacheron from Fast Attack, but that's probably just because they're Forge World. They're good.

@@jean-philippehaufroid6425 I'm not sure you understand how amazing a second move is. The only shooting units we have are not moving anyway, so they don't care. Exocrines and Hive Guard stay put at the back field. Our Genestealers, Dimacherons, Scythed Hierodules, and Swarmy himself however, have no guns and will tear shit up if/when they get into melee. Taking Kraken as your Hive Fleet lets you get not one, but two big beefy melee units into charge range on turn 1. This is extremely important, as the biggest weakness of our melee guys is getting shot off the board before they ever reach their targets. On top of that, Swarmlord is one of our only sources of S8 weapons. He's worth every point.

    • @jean-philippehaufroid6425
      @jean-philippehaufroid6425 4 роки тому

@@EpicFiddleGuy Unless one of those is a genestealer or broodlord, you will send only one big monster if you advance since you will be able to cast the spell that allow him to charge only once.
Then, what happen ? You have one big thing alone in the ennemy line. Yes, it might kill something (Might !) but then, it will get deleted. Same thing with the swarmlord. Once he's out of hiding, every gun will be on him since your strategy is pretty much based on him. Why based on him ? Why would you pay 270 points in one unit if not as a key element ?
Or worst : Your ennemy have put simple infantry in front of anything important. And 6 (+tails) attack won't even go through (Only genestealer might get a chance.).
I know that Double move can be powerful... But it can also be isealy counter... These days, our only good unit are those that can shoot or survive long enough to get points. Swarmlord is uselless in that climat or at least no more than a tyran. His point are better serve in warrior or gaunt.

    INTRO:
Blast doesn't hurt us nearly as bad as coherency
voracious has and always will be a trap
Jorm is good, it trades a little infantry durability/offense/mobility for a lot of monster durability. You don't really use their stratagem or spell, just their trait to get 1+ save barbed hierodules and 2+ save monsters.
Pack Hunting is simply worse Bio Metallic Cysts for the vast majority of units, because most units don't get to use either trait unless they're hormagaunts, but BMC is unconditional, where PH has an easy to fulfill condition.
The Norn Crown is probably one of the worst relics in the game, and the maw claw isn't great in my opinion, Resonance Barb should always be taken.
    HQ:
I agree that tervigons are 2 stars.
I disagree that Swarmy is worse than tyrants and that he is three stars. He is used in most comp lists nowadays, and his extra movement is essential. Especially if you play passively with the new forgeworld models, he'll live more often than not for WWSWF secondary points, and his melee capability surpasses a non-adapted tyrant anyway in melee. His movement is also better than a flyrant on flat terrain. He is simply valuable. I would give him 5 stars.
I agree that Tyrants are 2-3 stars.
I disagree that the Tyranid Prime is 4 stars, but that's because I think Warriors are a trap option. We don't need cheap HQ when our HQ is the best thing we have. I would give him 2-3 stars.
I agree that the Neurothrope is amazing, most likely one of the best units in our codex. I would give it 5 stars. That being said, the Horror is better than Onslaught in my opinion (not for the Neuro, but for other casters) due to not needing to gamble advances. In addition, Kronos Symbiostorm is our best spell, and it does well on a Barbed Neuro.
Broodlords are not 5 stars. Most Comp nid players think they are 1-2 stars. I think they are 3 stars due to recognizing the usefulness inherent in being able to absolutely kill a guy. His buff to stealers is near worthless due to their dropped value in 9th. Overall good, but we have too many good HQ units to warrant him.
    (UNLISTED)
Malanthrope deserves 5 stars. Get Down Sir+6" of -1 to hit is simply amazing.
    TROOPS:
I agree that Hormagaunts are 4 stars.
I disagree that Genestealers are 4 stars. I would rank them at 2 stars. Their offensive capability is not good for their points. They are not well costed. They are not survivable, they are only fast and are only fast when combined with Kraken and Swarmy support. Infestation nodes should almost never be used.
Tyranid Warriors, in my opinion, are a 3 star unit. They simply do not justify their cost. They are incredibly durable when adapted, but we already do that with termagants, and I just can't see the use.
Termagants are amazing and deserve their 5 stars.
    ELITES:
I agree with the rating of the Haruspex and Deathleaper.
The Maleceptor deserves 3 stars. His -1 incoming strength stratagem is good, though his standard stats are passable.
The Tyranid Guard are 1 star, rather than 2. Their lack of speed combined with lack of strength, and the fact that it's equally efficient to get another hive tyrant if you just want to save tyrant wounds.
I agree with the ratings for the Red Terror, Pyrovores, Venomthropes, Hive Guard and Lictors (with the caveat that I think Lictors may be the best units in the game due to their ability to perform actions after deepstrike, and then charge gunlines denying overwatch and completely shut down bad melee guns (even if only for one turn, shutting down a custodes dread is useful)
Zoans however I disagree with. I am talking against the Tyranid grain however, most Tyranid players believe Zoans to be far better than I do. I would still place them at 4 stars, but find their offensive and defensive capabilities highly overrated.
    FAST ATTACK:
I agree with Spores, Sky Slasher Swarms, Gargoyles and Raveners.
Shrikes should get 2 stars. No Prime Buff, no Defensive Stratagems, No Objsec, just worse warriors.
The Mawloc deserves 4 stars. He can break screens, letting him contest backline objectives and abandoned objectives, and grants all manner of mobility secondaries, as well as being 102 points to lock people down for a little bit, as they can't move through the large footprint.
    (UNLISTED)
Dimachaeron deserves 5 stars. He is incredibly strong, killing anything he touches, with practically fly and super fast with swarmy buffs. He's also incredibly durable.
    HEAVY SUPPORT:
I agree with Toxicrene and both Trygons.
I disagree with Biovores and believe they deserve 3 stars. Yes, killing things is more useful than pestering them, but if you can lock an entire army off an objective with some well placed mines, they're incredibly useful. They can also lock down big models via spore mine *wrapping*, completely annihilating any use melee LOW want.
Carnifexes deserve 2 stars. They simply lack offensive and defense.
The thornback, tyrannofex and Exocrine I agree with.
    (UNLISTED)
The Barbed Hierodule deserves 5 stars. Most tanky unit we have, with really good shooting.
The Scythed Hierodule deserves 4 stars, his large footprint without fly basically makes him a Dima with worse mobility and better offense, which is helpful when dueling with big monsters, but most of the time, the Dima already kills whatever it touches, just take that instead.
    DEDICATED TRANSPORT:
The Tyrannocyte deserves 1 star due to it's lack of use.
    FLYERS:
    I agree with both flyers.
    (UNLISTED)
The Harridan deserves 3-4 stars. It simply has an incredibly good combination of stats.
    TERRAIN:
Sporocysts deserve 3 stars. They, like biovores, can lock down so much area early and make it near impossible for your opponent to take certain objectives.
    LORD OF WAR:
    (UNLISTED)
Hierophant deserves 3 stars. Actually okay stats offensively and defensively. Fun unit too, at the expense of being expensive.
Overall I would give this video 2/5 stars for accuracy and 4/5 stars for editing. It was fun to watch, but stuck in the past. It seemed as though you only said things that were true in 8th and disregarded 9th.

Even on the side of utility, swarmlord doesn't really shine. The double move don't allow the unit to shoot so you won't use it on a unit with a gun which reduce already a lot his usefulness. Then, depending what you fight against, you might throw the unit you double move to its death since it's likely that it will be alone. It might disturb your ennemy for a moment but not long... And, the worst part, there isn't much unit that you would want to throw that way to your ennemy... A lot of the mele unit are overcosted or just useless...
So, more often than not, the swarmlord is pointless because he only work with some unit in one playstyle...

The Scything and Barbed Hierodules got shifted from Lord of War to Heavy Support, which as a fan of Land Raiders, I'd put the Barbed Hierodule at 3-4 Stars for it's solid stats, excellent save, solid guns and not having the movement restrictions the Exocrine has in order to maximize its shooting. Then there's the Lord of War units the Harridan aka Tyranid Dragon, and the massive Hierophant.

As a warning to beginner Tyranid players, there are several flaws with this list. I had to laugh that a Tyranid Prime, which is 1-star hot garbage got rated higher than the Swarmlord, which is arguably the best unit in the book (anyone who disagrees doesn't understand how unique his ability is and how important movement is in 40k).
Just off the top of my head from watching:
The above points about Swarmlord/Tyranid Prime
He is completely missing the point on Lictors, Biovores, and Maleceptors. Lictors are great yes, 4 or 5 stars, but they WILL NOT kill anything the entire game. Complete garbage in combat. They are great however, because they are cheap 1-man, non-character infantry units that deepstrike. This unique profile is great for accomplishing secondaries such as Deploy Scramblers. Maleceptors aren't fantastic, but their use is protecting your units and being reliable casters. And as far as Biovores, you actually want to miss with the spore mines and block your opponent's movement.
I'm not sure where he's getting 250ish points for Trygon Primes or over 200 for Trygons. They're not great units, but definitely not that expensive.
Lastly, I think any infantry have top be at least 3 stars for being able to complete secondaries. Tyrant Guard can at least do secondaries or hold objectives while protecting a tyrant. Gaunts are certainly not 5 stars, you just need to have them if you plan to have any sort of board presence.
For an excellent tier review, watch the one by Tactical Tortoise, at least if you're into competitive Tyranids.

The one thing I really disagree with is Spore Mines being so poorly rated. They don't do much damage and they are fragile, yes. But the key thing is that they can move block better than even nurglings thanks to points. And if your opponent is shooting them then they arent shooting your army. And as part of their move blocking, you could deny the opponent valuable mission points from the start cause they can't get out of the deployment zone and you only spent like 100 points. Not an every game thing but can be a very powerful option for 9th missions

As a hive mind player I think you are right about a bunch of stuff on this list but wrong BIG TIME, on some key others. Tyranid are not a durable or damage dealing army. Our best units buffed as high as they can go arnt even better then stock blue boys, so don't play the game on their terms. Tyranids win and lose games in the movement phase. So that being said, anything that impacts that phase is our key to victory. The big misses here are swarm lord and anything dealing with spore mines. Swarmmy is 5 stars everyday, yeah he's swingy in combat (I have still 1v1ed girlyman and won) but the hive command is so powerful its not funny. Does the enemy hold an objective? Nope cuz 30 terms with ob sec just double moved onto it. They don't need to shoot they just need to throw a dance party on that point. Also anything that hinders your enemy's move only accentuate ours, so here is where mines come in. Biovores have straight up won me games. Is a flamer tank moving up a flank? Did terminators just drop on a corner? Is a smash captain about to make a charge into your horde? No, no they are not. Cuz for your opponent, shooting comes after movement, and if they can't move because there is a FREE unit standing in there way, bully for us. There is not a list that I play without three bios in the back line. In 8th I would move them so they are - 1to hit, just to drop spores down. The mortals are just gravy. Then if you do something crazy like bring 3 sporcysts 9 biovores and a harpy, all of a sudden you are putting 210 points of free move blocking, mortal dealing, extra targets that your opponent has to deal with FREE EVERY TURN all for under a grand in points. Then fill out the rest with swarmy and gaunts maybe with army wide 6+ fnp and you have a stupid to kill army that will dominate the movement phase. That's my two cents at least.
P.s. Carnifexs other then stock and standard with upgrades are laughable at 3 stars. Just no. 1 star maybe.

love nids and anything that talks about nids.
This list is obviously way too focused on "lethality = viability." This is pretty classic with channels that try to have an opinion on everything without having the time and experience on the competitive table to have truly informed opinions.
Poorly assessed units include: Broodlord, Gene stealers, Swarmlord, Biovores, Mawloc.
Also there are lots of units that nobody plays that everyone has an opinion on, but the fact of the matter is that 40k is a deep game with tons of variables and requires a lot of time with a particular unit to truly realize it's usefulness.
That's it... again, love all tyranid content and the game of 40k. But this is just opinions based on datasheets and the 40k reddit feed.

@@jean-philippehaufroid6425 I feel like at 1k pts things go a bit different. I don't yet know how it feels to play on a normal size board but according to that video I'll have to change my priorities quite radical when I'll get my army up to 2k pts

@@МаторанКод On bigger board, it's not rare that melee unit need two turns at normal speed to reach their opponent (if not more). Which would mean that the unit will often die or be very low in wounds or number when reaching ennemy line and, in some case, do absolutely nothing...
The reason than Kraken was used in that format is that you could take genestealers (who can advance and charge), make them advance (with 3d6, you often get a 5 or 6), duble that advance (so +10 or +12 move) with a stratageme specific to Kraken and use the swarmlord to make them move again. Which would put those genestealer right in front front of the ennemy T1.
If you have the time, i would recommend to look at some battle report from miniwargame studio, tabletop tactic or other channel to see the kind of thing that happen on bigger board.

    • @МаторанКод
      @МаторанКод 4 роки тому

@@jean-philippehaufroid6425 I'm watching most of batreps from big channels, but the problem is that you rarely see units like haruspex in such videos. I saw haruspex once and it was a game with long-edge deployment. He performed extremely well, imo, biting dreadnoughts of the opponent hard, but I think it was not the right usage of that beast. Most people on big channels not trying to show anything new or interesting. So the only chance to understand what unit can do is to try playing him by yourself.
Winters and his Kraken used to have huge blobs of termagants to hold objectives in 8th. And I felt like it's not a good idea as their shooting was pretty much not used and huge blobs of bugs were difficult to hide, so I feel quite skeptic about termagants now. I think you better take several smaller units and try to hide them near the objective rather then take a lot of them and let your opponent to kill them all with small-arms fire.

@@МаторанКод The problem with haruspex is that it's a slow tank (7 movement...) who is supposed to be a monster in mele (and he can be) but, for some strange reason doesn't hit better than a gaunt... (by that, i mean he hit on a 4+ and 5+ when wounded) and that his potential number of attack can be random. and there is the fact that is strength go down with his wounds... More the time pass, the less he become effective.
Next to that, you have the trygon who, for 20 point less give you : hitting on 3+, 6 attack +1 tail attack, Mouvement of 9, ability to arrive at 9' of your ennemy, can get a +1 to his charge, can bring another unit with him,...
For the same job, you have two unit where one is clearly superior to the other (which sadly goes for A LOT of unit of the tyranid codex...) ... It make you ask why you would take the haruspex if not for his "cool-factor".
For the gaunt : It's sad to say but you shouldn't take them for their ability to kill but because of their numbers. 9th edition is a game of objectif so, the longer you stay on one, the more point you get.
They hit on 4+, have endu 3 and save 6+ and shoot with a worst version of a bolter. Except against guard equivalent, they won't kill anything or only by chance. Because of that, their best use is to put a group of 30 on objectif and hope that your ennemy doesn't have what is necessary to clean them...
I play against SM and Necron these days and the only real use that my gaunt had in those game are "blocking objectif" and "protect character". You can use them to also try to block infantery unit in mele but it will depend of what you fight.
