This method worked for my dog. I adopted a 16 week old rescue, that was seperated from her mother and litter mates to soon in life. She has alot of stress behaviors, to alot!
I followed the method exactly and we have succesfully tamed the car. I was amazed at her almost immedate turn around. Prior to this counterconditioning training, she resisted getting near the car and when picked and place in the car she was frozen in fear salivating, the degree of salivation was like I never imagined possible. In my persute to help her I found this video.
She jumps in on her own and enjoys the ride. It took patients and time I devoted 3 days to the process and allowed her to make the decission. In short I followed the instructuions from this video.
We are amazed, God Bless you for posting this video.

i adopted a pitbull who had anxiety in car. what i did was i feed him twice a day 8am 5pm. so for the second feeding i started taking him out to the garage an letting him eat his bowl of food in my car an as he got more comfortable i would take him for a ride around the block an would feed him after i got back.

Great video, I tackled this a few months ago in a very similar way, and we had to start at the house door. It took about 2 months, but now she jumps into her seat, I feel like she still doesn't settle into the car ride, standing when road noise changes or we go over bumps, but this is getting better with treats. What I can't seem to alleviate is the end of the journey, she goes crazy, vocalises, jumps around (not her normal behaviour) I don't know if its just excitement to be getting out of the car, but I'd love tips on how to keep her calmer then.

Take your dog somewhere he/she loves to go at the same time for 2 weeks. And then keep going.
Be gentle on turns and breaking.
I had a lot of trouble with my pup, because I was inconsistent, going to different places at different times.
I now have to train him that he's not invited into the car when I open the door, there are times I need to leave him behind! 😂

This is so so helpful. I've been looking for a video that has examples and solutions for this problem. We cant figure out why our pup wont get in the car. Open the door he stares at the seats. We throw his high value treats in side and he still wont get in. He will put his front paws on seat then look up at us to lift him in the car. We dont know why he doesnt like getting in. He will lay down on the seat and look sad when its moving fast. Slowing down he loves getting up and looking out the window. Mixed messages.

Yeah me too I have tried everything. We also desensitized him to car when he was a puppy. Dog gets anxious thinking im gonna leave him in car so always when car stops or slows at destination is when it starts. Tried kongs, scatter feeding, tried desensitizing to me coming in and out for a whole cross country. Tried corrections. Tried harness seat belt. Just a sit helps but the barking whining racket continues. Nothing works long term. Haven't found any source to directly help address this. At home they deal with me leaving just fine. Tackled it from several angles and put in the work. I kinda just started accepting his behavior more as its just how he is but we still work on it. Ill prob do another deep dive he is great overall just loses it in car.

My dog was a shelter dog and she definitely has had anxiety for awhile now. She does really well when I am around but when it comes to the car, not so much. She goes directly to the floor on the passengers side and digs her head... she stays like that no matter how long the ride is. It's not a problem for me but I really want to help her overcome it so she can enjoy rides like a dog should... head out the window with a big smile.

Question, what if they won't take/eat treats while in the car, due to the anxiety? Do we go back to the second stage, where we have them retrieve the treat in the backseat themselves?

    • @qwertykotchka394
      @qwertykotchka394 2 роки тому

I'm only replying as you haven't received an answer yet but I think under any situation, if your dog is refusing treats it's an indication that they are over threshold and that you should at a minimum go back to the step where they were last taking treats. I say as a min as sometimes the dog is still stressed but able to take treats, which is not necessarily a learning environment. With some dogs it is better to return to a stage where the dog is happy and stress free (as demonstrated by their body language) and reinforce at that stage. Then maybe consider if there is a way that you can split the next step to make it easier for your dog to feel comfortable going forward?

My beagle spaniel mix loves to go in the car with us....but...he loses his mind if we go into the store for 5 min, even if he can see us. By the time we get back to the car, he is panicking, panting and scratching at the windows. It makes going on long trips with him tough if you have to stop to go to the little girls room!!! Do you have any videos that talk about this type of separation anxiety? He is a covid baby I am afraid and is not really used to being alone much now that I work remotely still. However, he seems ok if I leave the house. He does look out the window but isn't panicking the same. Also, we recently took him camping and to my surprise, he was ok sitting quietly by himself tied at the site when I walked down the road a bit to go to the bathroom or the water tap. So, it is just the car. What gives and how can we help him?!

I have a young Labrador who used to enjoy car rides, but eventually started showing signs of anxiety such as heavy breathing and excessive drooling. There was even a time when he vomited in the car and seemed quite embarrassed by it. To address this issue, I began feeding him well in advance of our journeys, which appeared to make a difference. With time, he has grown more relaxed during car rides and often falls asleep within approximately five minutes. I've also found that adjusting the car's temperature using the AC or slightly opening a window has had a positive effect.
In the past, I had a Springer Spaniel who always loved going for car rides, regardless of when he had eaten. He would stay awake throughout the trip, enjoying the scenery.
To ensure a smoother experience, I recommend avoiding feeding your dog less than two hours before the trip. Additionally, it's important to be mindful of the temperature conditions.

You're saying it would be more realistic to watch a dog have a panic attack. Do you not already know what a dog looks like when they're barking, lunging, aggressing, experiencing anxiety? If you seriously don't know what that looks like, there are billions of videos on UA-cam to help you. What's not on YT very much is effective strategies to prevent those behaviors in the first place.
(Imagine if you wrote on a therapists UA-cam channel, "you made a video about depression, but there are no real people in depression in the video! Not helpful!!" That would be an absurd expectation for a video about people and it's an absurd expectation for a video about dogs.)

Watch Robert Cabral work with a young female GSD that has been trapped in a shelter for 8 months and 20 minutes later the GSD has more trust in Robert than Zaks dog which has been raised by Zak. BTW.. Robert uses zero aversive training when working with the frightened GSD and it is a beautiful thing to watch.

I find this video controversial, i'm not a dog trainer like yourself but with all due respect - the idea of letting your dog stand (or sit) at the front of your car seems moronic... in the event that god forbid you have a collision...that dog will more than likely meet a rather horrid end....😢
I find this especially vexing that this is a training video, ie encouraging people this practice.
Safety first, in an ideal world no one crashes but that's just not how it is. Crating your dog, or even utalising the boot(trunk) or at the very least put on a doggy seatbelt will give it a chance to get away with minor damage....
By allowing them to free roam in the car only invites potential catastrophy.
It could be a cultural thing perhaps, i for one don't know a single friend here in the UK who allows their dogs to just peruse the entire car whilst traveling.
