I love your videos, your training style is "a matter a fact and consistancy" that's how I teach. I groomed dogs for 50 yrs I never had any trouble with behavior I even would go pick up and delivery for my elderly customers. Sometimes the dogs wanted to ride on my lap I would say no! Get in the back or put them in a kennel. Every evening I look forward to your videos I'm so happy I found you.
I'm having trouble with my dog in the car. He used to ride calm and quite but suddenly he started to get too excited and whiny on all rides after some minutes in the car. It's pure excitement because he thinks we are going to somewhere fun (mountain walks, etc.). He rides secured with a harness that let's the seatbelt go through it, so he is not moving much. I've tried everything and it doesn't work, I don't know what to try anymore and it makes trips very annoying. It can be a 10min or more than 1h long trip and he doesn't stop whinning.
Please make another/updated part to this. My dog freaks out and barks like crazy when people walk by/when we are in a drive through/a motorcycle drives by. We don’t get it at all. We have had him since he was a puppy and have no clue why he is so reactive in the car.
I got transport boxes for my 2 dogs and it was the worthiest purchase ever. I got the dogs used to the boxes at home and slowly introduced them on our trips, in the beginning short distances and gradually increasing the time spent in them. Now, they are quietly travelling even for 3 hours and it's saver for everyone.
I have failed with my 5mon, she whines and barks at other dogs outside and she is free to do whatever in the back of my SUV. I’m going to try the leash and bed method today. Thank you for the great advice!
Lol same! He’s too big for a crate to fit in my Jeep. He tries to chew up everything in the though. I need to put a bully stick in the car though. I think that would be a game changer.
My rehomed dog broke two crates from the inside, then a metal separation bar. Got her on harness instead, she bit the seat belt off... All my previous dogs have been good, this one is a challenge, but I hope to get there...
I'm so happy I came across this. My dog barks non stop in the car. He's a rescue so I didn't get a chance to train young. Not saying I would be any good. Didn't know most of this but I'm definitely going to give it a try! I was told to try a dog spray which I didn't really like. It doesn't really work anyways. Again thank you for this video!
I use a dog seat belt. It has a halter type device that protects the dog, and this in turn clips to a seat belt. The dog can sit up or lay down, but stays in its seat. No getting on the floor or crawling over its neighbor. I put 2 bouncy, happy, un-neutered, golden retriever males in the back seat of my camry and never have any problems. BONUS, they are safe in an accident. I bought the petsafe brand.
Great advice for car rides. I always see dogs running from window to window like they are crazy. Vivian is a beautiful dog and is liking your method of sitting in a doggy bed.
This is where I use an e-collar. Your method of multitasking leash corrections and driving is an unnecessary risk for most dog owners. Love your work dude! Keep up the great vids!
Unfortunately mine doesn’t care how much correction she gets! I can be at a light, reach around and grab her collar and jerk her back in the middle and as soon as I let go she’s back, barking like she wants to kill whatever she’s reacting to.I can tell her to sit and she half ass sits for about 2 seconds. I have her on a harness with a around the neck cushion seat belt attached to her back. I’ve got it as tight as it will go. I cannot fit a kennel in the car and there is no way I can get a different vehicle at this time. She’s a 3 yr old Blk/wht Aussie. High energy/ high drive. She’s pretty good most of the time at home. I have a connective tissue disease and any pilling or pushing will cause severe pain for days. I had a trainer tell me to get her a soft sided kennel but I measured and it won’t fit. She’s 62 lbs. I haven’t given her something to eat and will try that but I doubt she’ll care. What else can I do?
My dog is a hard case and very reactive to car rides. I tried your method with the leash and dog bed in the back but it still didn't work and I think he would go crazy in a crate. I gave him hemp oil treats before placing him in the car. After taking him for a walk, I parked my car in a shopping center, music playing, and sat there with him in back. I constantly had to correct my dog when someone walk by. I also used his toy to redirect him. When he didn't sound off, I would toss him a treat and say, "Good Quiet." It is finally working, so I am going to hang out with him in the parking lot while the weather is still cold. I want to desensitize him with people walking by. The ultimate test will be when I am not in the car with him.
When I started riding the car with my dog, I went heavy on the treats. I'd tell him to sit in the back while I geave treats after treats, before I even start the engine. Then, on the drive, I would treat him sporadically while he was good; if he got agitated I would tell him to sit and then treat. (Once I gave him a dry cattle ear that he ate during the entire ride, which was great). I also increased the duration of the rides, from 15 min up to 60 in the spam of a week. He is now very good in the car, and I don't use any treats anymore. Also, if you are not using a crate, use a harness and a seatbelt leash for your dog. It is just way safer for the dog and the driver.
So good to see and find out that what I did with my dog in the car was exactly like you said. First I had him in the crate and now he has a bed there. I also put now a mesh net product to stop him from crossing over to front seat. Now I’ll copy your method with the leash up to front to correct any misbehaving.
I stopped my dogs barking in the house and never had a problem in any car. Never had to feed them. All I say is Ah! at the slightest squeak and it just stopes. Never needed a car guard create etc. Teach your dogs how to behave in a house and they are the same everywhere else. It just like teaching good manors, once the children or dogs have them you dont have to teach them it for different situations.
So funny “ that’s what I do , you do what ever you want” said it hundred times cos idiot will have something negative to say ! 😂😂 once again “ what I do “ 👌😂😂😂
It's so funny, how I just came back from a ride with my dog, and he whines alot, and as I was driving. I said to myself, I'm going to look up videos regarding this, and what do you know??!! Thx!
After today with Lola in the car, just what I needed. It was challenging to see the correction you did (as far as the way you snaped the leash. Loved what to give them to keep them business!
Yep. I've heard about a Dobie lying curled in the front seat, no seat belt ... pick-up going at only 30mph ... collision happens ... dog hits the dash ... dog's neck broken and he dies instantly without a mark on him. Absolutely heart-breaking for the owner. The Blue Cross charity advises as follows: "Dogs in cars UK law The Highway Code requires dogs (and other animals) to be ‘suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly’ (rule 57). While breaking the Highway Code is not an offence in itself, allowing a dog to distract you could be taken into account in the event of an accident. Bear in mind that in a crash, an unsecured dog will be thrown forward with significant force. This could result in your pet being injured or worse and, depending on the size of your dog, could also injure or kill the driver or passengers."
My dog used to do well in the car as a small puppy but now he is reactive and is constantly looking around. I knew I should crate him before coming to this video, but I feel like I needed Joel to tell me to do it lol.
Want part 2 of this one please. Struggling to contain my dog. He directly pounces when we sees/hears other dogs outside and doesn’t listen at all in the moment.
hilarious watching that poodle, capable of touching the ceiling from a standstill, hesitating to jump into the car. I'm not criticizing the dog or anything, it was cute. She's probably used to using the side doors.
My cattle dog is not camera shy like Vivian. She would gladly perform her reactive dog drama under any circumstances. I do crate her, but she has good vision and intense concentration, and watches thru the ventilation holes for signs of anything barkable -- vehicles, people, animals, even construction/traffic variations -- nothing gets past her. She laughs off bark collars. E-collars on the highest setting have no effect. Kongs are less attractive than barking. When I cover the ventilation holes with a blanket, she works intently to grab a section of the fabric with her teeth and pull it into the crate where she shreds it. This does have the benefit of keeping her partially quiet while she does it, but she can destroy an entire comforter within 2 weeks so it gets expensive, plus the fabric confetti flies out my car door whenever it's opened.
I hear you! We began crating our extremely exuberant lab in our small suv when she was 8 weeks old. She’s 9 months now, and 2 weeks ago, on a whim, I bought a rear seat cover, put her in, told her in my stern “teacher voice” to sit down. Of course, she tried to come up front, but redirected her by waving a piece of mail, and she’s been great. My family thinks she’s just happy not having to be crated lol
I have the dog lease wrapped around my right hand giving him enough lease so he can lie down or sit, both hands on wheel, I shift gears, have Jeep, he wants to be near me, which is my fault, he's been going with me since he was puppy, he's great, he doesn't want me to leave him at home!!!!
I have 18 dogs atm. I take them all on group hikes, I have a few young ones that I out dog seat belts on but the rest are trained to sit in particular places in the car. If I just have a few with me they sit in the back seat or if my kids are in the car, the dogs are in a down on the floorboards. This is one of the first things I trained them.
Thank you so much for this video. I have my dog sit in back seat hooked to a seatbelt; after watching this I'm going to shorten the leash so she can't move from window to window. Hope that made sense. She does bark in the car. I will definitely try your tips, safely.
GREAT VIDEO Joel👍 but, T Y P I C A L ! ! ! 😆 😆… like: You take your car to a mechanic and all of a sudden it doesn’t “do that thing” anymore!!!🤦🏻♀️🤣lol
Thanks for the video. I use a car harness to stop my dog running around the car. My issue is that my dog loves to have. His head out of the window and enjoying the wind in his fur, however he does react to other dogs on leafs that we see when driving. The lead method will help me give a correction to manage the reactivity. Thanks
That's a really bad idea. I was a vet tech and saw many, many dogs with eye injuries from foreign bodies encountered while riding head-out. Often the eye could not saved. Sometimes the dogs would suffer lacerations to their faces requiring stitches. One dog I saw had a broken tooth from a rock that hit him in the mouth. If you've ever had a rock chip your windshield, imagine that hitting your dog's face instead.
Great video. I love your dogs. We have 2 American Akita’s. Our female Is reactive when we go to a drive-thru. Not aggressive but more excited. Non stop barking. We have a full gate between the front and the back . Any suggestions on how to condition her to not react to that stimulus? Thank you 🐾
Great idea. Then they can break all their ribs or be crushed…… seatbelts aren’t made for dogs and the ones that are pass ZERO safety tests…do research before you try to pass advice to the masses.
We use a harness on our GSD with a seatbelt attachment that clips to his harness on one end and into the seatbelt the other. It's a law in Rhode Island.
What if your in a bad accident and your dog is stuck clipped to the seat? 50/50 might be better if the dog could wriggle out of a bad position. Or god forbid you can’t get him out and the car is catching fire. So many variables,do what you feel is best folks.
Your videos have been so helpful and effective on my rescue German Shepherd! Please release a video on how you would train a dog fearful of getting into the car. When my dog knows I’m about to get her into the car, she will lay down, pee our of fear, and isn’t interested in treat at all. In the car, she would get so fearful that she would foam at the mouth a bit. Thank you!
Hi Joel, I would love to see a video on traffic reactivity whilst walking. We have a 9 month old Dutch x Belgian Shepherd who has started a very upsetting habit of lunging at the traffic (sometimes frothing at the mouth) & biting whatever is near her mouth (tender parts of my body!) and drawing blood. This has to stop! and I am at a loss of what to do. She has been doing marvelously since we've had her from 8 weeks old and began watching your videos, this one has thrown us and after this mornings walk and injuries I now am starting to doubt my abilities on this behaviour. At first I was under the assumption it was excitement. But perhaps it's fear? Loving your videos, and your stuffed Kongs have been a god send!
Joel, your timing is amazing. This afternoon I have been wondering if my right ear can recover from the direct hit, a volley, of loud sharp barks -- my 10-month Lab-Shepherd reacting, as we sat in the car, to a group of horseback riders going by.
My then pup used to throw up so badly in the car that I thought she would never be able to go anywhere. Even the shortest, slowest trip made her throw up. She found her own solution by loving sitting in my rocking chair ... so I started rocking it and she learnt to balance :)
Very informative video...my sister would let her dogs loose in the back seat and I notices it'd cause problems ...once I got my own pup I decided to use a harness and attach it to the loop on seatbelt...he's never misbehaved😅 so I guess it works
Joel, I have 2 Australian Cattle Dogs, my female is 9 yrs old and my male is 3 yrs old. They both have free run of the back of our SUV. The only time they become reactive in the car is when the car is parked and we are not in it. If someone walks next to it they become protective of the vehicle. What advice can you give me to calm them down?
That’s a tough one because you are asking your heelers to not do the job they were bred for, which is guarding! I would be interested to hear Joel’s take on how to handle this!
I have the opposite issue. My dog is reactive only when I'm in the car, even in the crate. I've watched him from a distance and he is quiet when I'm not there. He resource guards ME, in or out of the car.
Well, I had to deal with this 5 months ago with my v. reactive rescue dog. I have a camry. After dog fell into the foot well multiple times trying to kill other dogs through the window and me stomping on the brakes (safety permitting) she stopped. so much drama.
Hi..I have adopted a 4 1/2 year old male GSP 5 months ago. He barks in excitement in the car after a while....I have tried rewarding him when he lays down. It could take a while. I'll try a treat ball for him...like a Kong. Don't the marrow bones get really messy in the car's back seat. I have had success with a gentle leader and your loose leash method but he still barks when he sees an other dog. But his pulling and watching me has improved. I hope I can have success because I want to take him everywhere with me. 🐕💙😣
Wish you could have had my 37 lb terrier, she would not have disappointed with no reactivity, she has always travelled in a carrier and is reactive even in it, doesn’t want anyone near her, kind of protective of her space.
My 1 year old 40kg dog wants to play with every single dog we meet on the walk. He is really obedient until we see another dog. he loses his mind. I am always redirect him and eventually get his attention but will he ever be able to go off leash? He has a great recall when not distracted. I really like your videos they have helped me a lot especially at loose leash walking
A 1 year old large breed dog still has puppy brain. They grow so fast physically but it takes longer for them to mature mentally. There is a big difference between one year and two as to their gaining a more mature behavior. It sounds like you are on a good and successful track, just be patient and it will pay off!😊
My dog is the same way -- really obedient -- until we see another dog. She is 10-months old, 20 kg. Great recall when not distracted. The worst is when she sees a squirrel, or a pigeon.
@@topcatwarrior thank you that gives me a lot of hope. That is what everybody tells me. I give a lot of effort so that he can grow well and be a well behaved dog
I like my dog next to me in the front seat so I have more control over them. I can grab them when I have to brake harder than I expected to, or correct them without having to reach in the back. They can see the road, which helps with their state of mind. So with me, it's not about letting the dog do what it wants, it's about preferring that to the back seat. Not saying you should do the same, that's just what I do ;)
Airbags are a danger to pets in the front seat, have you considered a safety harness for them in the back so they don’t get thrown on a hard stop?🤷🏻♀️
My 2yr old bordoodle is crated in the back of my small SUV. He can see me and stands almost all the time. He will whine when we drive in busy areas with many cars. Do you think a towel over the crate would help? I'm a little worried he would get too hot.
My dog Zeus would have been back and forth barking at parked cars and road signs the minute you started driving. I use a pickup and he is in the back seat area with the seats flipped up with a big screen blocking him from getting up front. I recently got an anti barking collar and that has cut the barking down by like 90% so car rides are much more quiet now. Zeus is 5 years old and a mixed breed and weighs nearly 100 pounds.
My friend's dog barks like a lunatic throughout any journey whilst locked IN a crate. Would you have a lead on and feed it through the side so that you could correct the dog within the crate?
You did make me laugh so much reiterating this is what i do i have four dogs one is reactive barking when dogs go pass the car this is something i will definitely try naturally not because you told me to but because i think it great lol
@@SkittleBombs I take him on walks every single day. And we do hard playing outside where he gets to run as hard as he wants. Still gets the zoomies when he’s tired late at night. I just have to catch him and grab him and put him away with a baby gate. He’s not crate trained. He sleeps in the bathroom with a gate up.
Do u have any tips I have a 13wk old red heeler puppy that has recently started barking aggressively at me when in the cab to work I do keep her on a regular length leash
I have a severely over reactive dog when he is in my truck. He is harnessed so he can move side to side but not enter front seat. The major problem is , my dog is deaf. I have control of him outside of my truck. I love my dog but don't look forward to road trips. I have a headache from his constant barking. Indeed some guidance.
My dog is super chill in the car….until we get to where we are going. ( Except when we get home. Then he’s dead silent and I’m scared I’ll forget him if I’m not in the habit of always checking the back seat.) But when we go to the park or something, then he gets so excited and starts barking right in my ears until we get out and it’s awful! Any advice on how to train him out of this in a way that saves my hearing and doesn’t mean sitting there while he makes my ears ring?
I always have my dogs in a crate while driving. In Norway you Get a big ticket if you Get pulled over by the police!! I do think it is much safer to use a crate anyway👍
Try letting them go thru the doors. Open both doors in the back sears and lure the pup through the car. May help having another person on the other side too. My dog likes getting in the car but hates the drive but that's how I got him in.
Thank you for this video. However, I have a 5 month old Chow Chow pup who’s very excited when getting out of the car. He’s in the trunk, and still too young to be allowed to jump in or out. I want him to sit before I open the trunk lid. He does it, but the moment he hears the door open he’s ready to jump out. I close the door in front of him and wait until he calms down. But, as soon as I open the door the tiniest amount up he stands again. He’s only jumped out of the car once, but I don’t want him to learn that behaviour. So, how do I get him to calmly exit the car?
How about a crate for safety? Please do a modified version. Several people have asked in the comments. Also, they have similar problems as mine. My dog is quiet in a crate unless we go to a drive through window. The minute she hears someone taking our order, she starts barking. I can get her to stop, it’s only for a few seconds.
People get car sick when they can't link the movements of their body to what their eyes register. I reckon it's the same for dogs. Put him in the front seat if you can, help him see the road.
They do grow out of it, when the bones in the inner ear mature. Meantime, I found my dog did great on 2 squirts of Bach Rescue Remedy Spray on the tongue about 5 mins before setting off (same sort human's use) ... just wish I hadn't tried every other method under the sun for the 9 months prior to that!
Unfortunately not all of them grow out of it... My three year old dog still throws up, be it in the crate in the boot, in the boot without a crate, with or without a harness and attached to seatbelt buckle, even in the foot space of the front passenger seat with me. I've been trying to desensitize him since we got him. I'm slightly desperate because we can't take him anywhere.
Yes but when they don’t listen to lieing down and still jump to front seat. I have a nightmare time more so when he can smell sea air at beach barks so loud pierces my ears and stresses me out so much I react by shouting out of anger frustration … help
We would feed young horses in our horse trailer so they would be fine with it. Try giving all meals next to the car, gradually moving closer and then finally in the car. Next step would be desensitizing to doors being closed, car turning on, then short trips. Any idea why dog is so scared? Most dogs love car rides.
Hi Joel, I have a friend who has a relative 114 pound lab that she allows to roam the car continually. I have given suggestions but the friend always comes up with excuses of why it doesn’t work. I’m going to suggest the leash and frozen Kong. Will the friend follow through, most likely not but I will try. Keep up the good work.
People that have excuses for everything usually don't want to follow through with solutions. A good solution for roaming is braking. Tell your friend to drive around in quiet neighborhoods, 15 zones, and when it's safe and the dog starts to roam, brake. Not too hard, just enough to make it lose balance and force it to readjust. Then keep on doing that whenever the dog gets up, and also when the dog is sitting nicely. They will experience that when they sit or lie down, they don't lose balance. That will become their preferred state.
dogs are not allowed to hang loose in the car in the UK (anymore) ... in the past have trained dogs to the boot which is the coldest area in the car in the summer ... it also helps with car sickness - current pup has a seat belt but only coz I haven't got a suitable boot tidy for him to sit in ... never had a dog with reactivity in the car unless you call puking reactivity ... lol
This is wonderful, and helps very much, but my dog goes crazy when we get out of the car and go around to the back to let him out. He is hysterical, no reasoning with him!!! We will create him, follow your steps with leash, but need the next steps to help our reactive dog, (he is a Daddy’s dog ugh!). What would you suggest, HELP
Car reactive dogs affect the dogs on the sidewalks. I prefer crates for one or two border collies in a small hatchback. The slobber and fur is ridiculous. There is better things to do for your family, friends, and dogs than being injured or killed. The time cleaning up for passengers could be used with other things.
Lol not in my experience. I have my dog in my car every single day and it hasn’t gotten better. He barks at people outside the car and tries to chew on everything.
Sorry Joel, but this whole situation seems quite risky and potentially dangerous to me. What happens if you have to hit the brake pedal hard out of a sudden? Especially if the dog is in a standing position. What happens if the dog gets "crazy" while you are in a difficult driving situation that requires all of your attention? Maybe having the leash strapped on a stable point would be better, both for the dog and the driver. Noone wants to get involved in an accident, but being proactive doesn't hurt.
Ok i agree with getting them calm before they get in the car and using a chew for giving them something positive to do. But, this is the first time I have disagreed with you. And so I have to say it... You are telling everyone "this is what I do" but then say "you shouldn't do it like this because it's dangerous" 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ BETTER IDEA...if you don't want to use a crate is to get a doggy seatbelt! They make them in all types. But if you don't or can't get a seatbelt for them then the easiest way to secure them is to tie the leash to the headrest so they only have enough leash to lie down. This will prevent them from being able to roam around the car or jumping into the front and possibly your lap, causing a wreck.
@@iwallhausser8870 you're correct...But in securing the dog in one place with some sort of tether / seatbelt, it does the same thing he's trying to do while driving with one hand and still trying to keep eyes on the road. You'd still give the dog a nice chewy or fav toy to give them something to do other than the reactive behavior. With the tether or seatbelt, the one handed driving while working the leash is not necessary. But it IS safer!
I wouldn't risk a tether around the neck - car harness all the way. Wouldn't want my dog's head ripped off in a collision. Rule of thumb: how does a 7 year old kid travel in a car? S/he's strapped in - it makes sense.
It sounds like good advice but the dog wasnt being reactive at all [maybe he just knows not to mess with you]. A more reactive dog with more happening for it to react to would be better. The dog was so good it never needed correction so i never saw how well it worked.....maybe if you borrowed my rescue dog ......he reacts to everything he sees.......a nightmare in the car or on the beach......i have a lot of work to do!....Thanks for the theory lesson
Thank you Joel, he was great until he got big enough to look out, now it’s off the chart...and if anyone comes near the car while parked, or we are at a gas pump and people come close...he is seatbelted in a modified backseat however he takes up the whole space now...Great Dane Ford Focus
my two centzz..... i think ur philosophy is akin to being a strict but fair father figure to your dog...to that goal that u have metrics and methods to achieve tapping into the dogs intellect... BECAUSE without the strict structure in place, a dog WILL get out of control fast.....
Joel, I HIGHLY suggest you restrain the dogs you put in your car. That way in an accident they won't go flying around the car, hurting you, themselves, and/or any other passengers. I always have my dog in a harness with a seatbelt through the harness handle. If I don't have that option I at least tie her leash to something! I love your no-nonsense attitude with dog training by the way. Your videos have been very helpful to me! The dog being unrestrained in the car was just something that concerned me.
My dogs were in an accident with my husband in the car, and they are 10 pound Italian Greyhounds. As you said, if they had not been restrained, they would have flown around and probably would have died. Instead they just had bruising around the chest area since I use Roman harnesses with a clip into the seat belt lock. And if they had been on just collars, their necks would have been broken.
I am very surprised Joel doesn't have his dog secure . Very surprised. Even a dog who is well-behaved & always lies still could be seriously hurt if you had to suddenly slam on the brakes or were in an accident. I always say "Anyone...human , dog or cat....who rides in our car is seatbelted, tethered or in a carrier." Our dog wears a harness which has a tether from it to the seatbelt buckle. Can't tell you how many times she's been spared from being thrown to the floor when I've had to suddenly apply the brakes.
Hi,my dog loves riding in the car.he is either in the front,or in the back in a transport box,but he is always fastend with a seatbelt on his harness. He goes nuts, when we stop and people go by. He can't contain himself,he is so excited he starts barking (on a car park,at a shop etc).when we are at home it's even worse.during the drive he keeps watching where we're going and what's outside, but if we drive for more than 20min he lies done and rests until we stop.I get him to stop barking much quicker now, and i don't use the ear plugs when we stop any longer ,but it's still very annoying... I make him lie down and become calm before allowing him to get out of the car.when he won't stop barking (mostly when we're home), I leave and he stays in the car.he is not leaving the car in barking mode. thanks for your suggestion that he does not have to protect the car or watch what's going on.so I'll make him lie down from the beginning next time maybe that does the trick.we'll see.
I love your videos, your training style is "a matter a fact and consistancy" that's how I teach. I groomed dogs for 50 yrs I never had any trouble with behavior I even would go pick up and delivery for my elderly customers. Sometimes the dogs wanted to ride on my lap I would say no!

Lol same! He’s too big for a crate to fit in my Jeep. He tries to chew up everything in the though. I need to put a bully stick in the car though. I think that would be a game changer.
🤦♀️me too!
She is so pretty, what a beautiful fluffball
Great info as usual
This was something everyone didn't know they needed.
My rehomed dog broke two crates from the inside, then a metal separation bar. Got her on harness instead, she bit the seat belt off... All my previous dogs have been good, this one is a challenge, but I hope to get there...
My dog does a bark fest when we put it in park. It deafens me. I have to put his bark collar on to make road trips.
another awesome vid🐾❤️
Keep up the great vids!
multi tasking? flicking a leash or pushing a button. Takes about the same effort
Amazing as always. Cute puppy dog 🐩
"Holy mackerel!" 😂
Thanks for all your daily videos. very good!!!

Joel: explains what his dog does
Dog: does it
My dog is a hard case and very reactive to car rides.
@ 3:31 you already suggested it 🤣🤣🤣 you can't take it back
I just use a harness with a handle and seat belt mine in. He 70lbs. Seat belt is tight enough he must lie down. Always been good. Just sleeps.
😂😂 once again “ what I do “ 👌😂😂😂
It's to avoid lawsuits.
When I though I couldn’t learn much more about dog behavior, a car video lets gooo
Prince looks soo ready to go! Lol
I'm a big fan of car harnesses for their safety and yours.
Yep. I've heard about a Dobie lying curled in the front seat, no seat belt ... pick-up going at only 30mph ... collision happens ... dog hits the dash ... dog's neck broken and he dies instantly without a mark on him. Absolutely heart-breaking for the owner.
The Blue Cross charity advises as follows:
"Dogs in cars UK law
The Highway Code requires dogs (and other animals) to be ‘suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly’ (rule 57).
The leash legal statement was so funny
Want part 2 of this one please. Struggling to contain my dog. He directly pounces when we sees/hears other dogs outside and doesn’t listen at all in the moment.
hilarious watching that poodle, capable of touching the ceiling from a standstill, hesitating to jump into the car. I'm not criticizing the dog or anything, it was cute. She's probably used to using the side doors.
😂 I thought that too, they are so athletic!
I will try this. Thank you very much!

You take your car to a mechanic and all of a sudden it doesn’t “do that thing” anymore!!!🤦🏻♀️🤣lol
Loving that Dad Van.
thank you for this Video !
Great video. I love your dogs. We have 2 American Akita’s. Our female Is reactive when we go to a drive-thru. Not aggressive but more excited. Non stop barking. We have a full gate between the front and the back . Any suggestions on how to condition her to not react to that stimulus? Thank you 🐾
Everyone should put their dogs on harnesses and clip them on the seatbelt buckle. If you got into an accident, your dogs will get hurt otherwise.
Great idea. Then they can break all their ribs or be crushed…… seatbelts aren’t made for dogs and the ones that are pass ZERO safety tests…do research before you try to pass advice to the masses.
@@neutrino09 I didn't say use the seatbelt. I said use the dog harness. I hope you'll never get into an accident while your dog is riding with you.
We use a harness on our GSD with a seatbelt attachment that clips to his harness on one end and into the seatbelt the other. It's a law in Rhode Island.
Just use a crate. Safe for both human and dog
This afternoon I have been wondering if my
right ear can recover from the direct hit, a volley, of loud sharp barks -- my
10-month Lab-Shepherd reacting, as we sat in the car, to a group of horseback riders going by.
Yes! I was waiting for this video
@@iwallhausser8870 My 10-month pup does the same -- resource guards me :/
Well, I had to deal with this 5 months ago with my v. reactive rescue dog. I have a camry. After dog fell into the foot well multiple times trying to kill other dogs through the window and me stomping on the brakes (safety permitting) she stopped. so much drama.
What about when you leave them in a parking lot and they go ballistic any time someone goes by? Maybe that’s what she does?
It
sounds like you are on a good and successful track, just be patient and it will pay off!😊
My dog is the same way -- really obedient -- until we see another dog.
@@AimiliosR21 👍🏼
I like my dog next to me in the front seat so I have more control over them. I can grab them when I have to brake harder than I expected to, or correct them without having to reach in the back. They can see the road, which helps with their state of mind. So with me, it's not about letting the dog do what it wants, it's about preferring that to the back seat. Not saying you should do the same, that's just what I do ;)
Airbags are a danger to pets in the front seat, have you considered a safety harness for them in the back so they don’t get thrown on a hard stop?🤷🏻♀️
@@topcatwarrior I did get a harness, but I later found out it was 100% useless in collisions over 20mph. So I just drive extra safely.
My puppy is buckle in on the front passenger side and really doesn't pay attention to outside. She barks at people in drive through.
great video Joel
Great tips! Our dog is a nightmare in the car!
Should do a video on what to do when dogs get the zoomiez. My dog gets them late at night on my third floor apartment. My neighbors probably hate me.
Probably going to say crate train or walks
Our dog loves the car until I stop then barks the car down. Not sure how to correct this problem. Once we move again he is fine. Many thanks.
Prince is so cute
Great advice - once I can get my dog to actually get in the car I’ll try this… !
Peanut butter on a spoon may work.
My 5 month old lab really isn't reactive in the car, but gets car sick. Is this something he will grow out of?
People get car sick when they can't link the movements of their body to what their eyes register. I reckon it's the same for dogs. Put him in the front seat if you can, help him see the road.
@@Flippokid That makes sense, thank you for the advice.
I will surely try it out!
@@sairhug That's a relief! The spray sounds handy, I will surely look into that. Thank you!
Any advice for getting a large scared dog (over 100lbs) into the car?
We would feed young horses in our horse trailer so they would be fine with it. Try giving all meals next to the car, gradually moving closer and then finally in the car. Next step would be desensitizing to doors being closed, car turning on, then short trips. Any idea why dog is so scared? Most dogs love car rides.
@@annmeacham5643 we got her at a year old and she’s always been this way so not sure if something happened when she was younger.
My dog litterally springs out of the trunk's door when I open it even if it's tied up. I can't get him off the car nicely.
Great video. Props to her groomer not many groomers can groom.
My dog just cries anytime he is separated from me & cannot see me . He ceies whenever he does not get his way . Any suggestions?
dogs are not allowed to hang loose in the car in the UK (anymore) ... in the past have trained dogs to the boot which is the coldest area in the car in the summer ... it also helps with car sickness - current pup has a seat belt but only coz I haven't got a suitable boot tidy for him to sit in ... never had a dog with reactivity in the car unless you call puking reactivity ...
The more you do it the less reactive they get in the car .
You are telling everyone "this is what I do" but then say "you shouldn't do it like this because it's dangerous" 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
BETTER IDEA...if you don't want to use a crate is to get a doggy seatbelt! They make them in all types. But if you don't or can't get a seatbelt for them then the easiest way to secure them is to tie the leash to the headrest so they only have enough leash to lie down. This will prevent them from being able to roam around the car or jumping into the front and possibly your lap, causing a wreck.
This video is not about the dog being safe, it's about controlling reactivity
My puppy was fine in the car until recently. He just started barking at passing car recently. This video was not helpful at all.
I'm also a thug when driving so its oke XD
Can't tell you how many times she's been spared from being thrown to the floor when I've had to suddenly apply the brakes.
this dg is not barking and baking ,mine does,,,
I couldn't concentrate one the tips because of that filthy window.
Why do you not crate your dogs in a crate? I would think you would crate them for safety.
