I didn’t think most men wore makeup but many have very good facial cleaning routines. I believe the men in the entertainment world would use makeup to highlight their features, such as the person was saying that he did for his program.

In my opinion you need to do what makes you feel confident. BB cream is a multi-purpose cream with a tint with SPF everyone should wear it. As a woman I don’t wear much makeup unless I have a special occasion I just wear BB cream and mascara and lip balm. I feel that men wearing makeup is not a big deal just like we like to cover up some of our blemishes or things we find as imperfections as women why can’t men do it.

Makeup = femininity. no matter how open minded you are, your subconscious isn't it has been programmed by evolution
Answer yourself will you find bodybuilder women attractive, i am not talking about fit and healthy females but females with bigger biceps and thighs than you would you find attractive ?

I found this really interesting! I think it's also important to mention Korean men's skincare routine. Even though these products don't change their appereance directly, they do improve it in a way. They seem to have nicer skin because they take care of it, and maybe because of sunblock too and genetics of course, but I feel skincare does help a lot in terms of appereance. And am I say how great longer hair suits 승완 선생님? and even though our teacher is handsome, it was a great suggestion to make him wear a little make-up to shoot because of the lighting!

For the record, the 2021 study he references breaks the age range down further with guys in their 20s specifically at 4% wearing it normally and 21% wearing it for special occasions (for a grand total of 25% wearing at least some make-up some of the time).
I've only been living here for about two and a half years, but that sounds about right to me. I've started applying BB cream myself, but only use it on the weekends when/if I am going out, and I would say a fairly large number of the men on the street around me on a Saturday night have at least a little on (and sometimes are wearing quite a heavy amount).
Among some of guy friends, there have been instances where I always assumed they didn't wear any only to be surprised one day seeing them touch theirs up or noticing a cosmetic product on them. And things like drawing your eyebrows on or even getting them microbladed is extremely common. Cosmetics for men is more common in Korea than any other place I am aware of and it only seems to be growing in popularity! Perhaps not as many as, say, half of men, but 1/4 (maybe even 1/3 on a Saturday night) does not seem unrealistic either though.

As long as it's someone's choice to wear it or not wear it and they aren't forced to, I don't care at all if someone wears make up. I feel some societal pressure as a woman to wear make up to work but I'm not a morning person so I prefer to sleep a little longer and I'm not that skilled at applying make up so I rarely wear any.
If wearing make up makes a man feel happy or confident, I'm all for it. It's only seen as "not masculine" because there were some ridiculous ideas in the 20th century. In earlier times it was normal for men to wear make up, in some cultures it's always been normal for men to wear make up, and I'm glad we're moving towards more openness again because why would it be such a big deal for a man to paint his face anyway? It's such a mode of self expression.

I think that people that don't like the idea of men wearing make up are used to that heavy caked on makeup, noticeable foundation and concealer, over done brows, etc. While people are already used to women looking like that, it would be very noticeable in men
Personally I think things like concealer and foundation should always be used to improve, meaning, it has to look like your skin, both for men or women. I find that approach to make up more common in Korean makeup than in Western.

Nothing wrong with men wearing makeup, especially if it is to accentuate their features. BB cream, eyebrow pencil, nude lip color are good. When I visited Korea, I could easily tell which men were wearing makeup and which ones weren't just by looking at their faces. The makeup made a difference in the apoearance of their skin. Just remember that BB cream is also a sunscreen, so it is good to wear everyday. Men's makeup is very natural, so I would encourage it.

  • @Nataliewms
    @Nataliewms Рік тому +18

Makeup has been used by men and women for eons on stage, & then for TV when it was invented. I remind people of that all the time. Here in the US all the presidents since Kennedy have worn makeup when they’ve gone on tv because the screen makes you look unnatural & can make you look sickly.
TV & makeup went through a rough patch for a while when HDTV started. We can easily see things that weren’t so noticeable before about a person’s skin; their pores, scars, & pimples. Before makeup was more caked on to kinda cover over imperfect skin, or to create the correct skin tone under the harsh lighting. The techniques & products had to evolve. Now makeup is lighter & more skillfully applied. So now more people walk around with it in and you have no idea who is wearing it!!
It also use to be controversial for men to change their hair color, or get perms. That’s changed a LOT! Even my dad gets a pedicure, which lead him to getting a manicure. He hasn’t gotten them painted yet, but I see guys do it more & more with clear just to have nice neat hands. Still others get COLOR as a rockstar kind of vibe. Musicians have worn makeup, done their nails, worn fashion statements as part of the scene to stand out for a looong time. Steve Tyler? Sid Vicious? The Cure? KISS?
I don’t like when people push an “us vs them” agenda, especially when there’s a lot of similarities.

Thank you for being honest and just saying how things are. My brothers have often discriminated against Korean men saying they're girlish because they wear makeup, but I told them it's not like everyone does and that they're basing their opinion on just all the media they've seen of kpop and stuff. I hope a lot of people don't do the same and understand that what's shown on tv is almost always different from reality.
Also, I myself don't wear makeup because 1. I don't know how, and 2. The little I do know is a hastle.
But maybe one day I'll learn :)

Even if that was the case it wouldn't be a big deal. So what.....men were the ones who originally started to wear makeup anyway. Women started copying and somehow it became an issue for men to wear it. An easy Google search would reveal that truth. If 4% of Korean men want to wear makeup to improve their appearance, I say go for it! Personally, I think the 17% who wear it for special occassions shows a trend for Korean men in comparison to the 80% who say its not masculune or their not interested. That's really a bit over 20% of Korean men who do engage in wearing makeup even if it is only for special occassions. So I say, leave people alone....it's no big deal. No one is going to die because some men engage in wearing makeup. Who cares....those who do look great anyway!

I used to work on a tv set and one of the things that people have to get used to is the fact that male actors wear make-up. EVERYONE we see in movies & videos, etc. does. (And rock musicians used to make themselves up all the time!) So, even though we don't see that everyday, it doesn't feel like that big a deal to me.

As a woman in her early 20's, i just started taking real interest in makeup, since i was interested in my childhood, but wasn't really able to pursue it. honestly really didn't have much interest in it, bcs going natural, even with bad acne days was my thing, like embracing whatever the flaws i had. But now i took more artistic interest towards makeup. hopefully i'll pursue it well enough to get good at it.
I'm glad that society's view towards makeup on any gender is slowly changing.

Even as a woman, I rarely ever wear make up. Artists and actors of course wear make up. I don’t think regular guys wear make up but use skin care and if they do wear make up, it is very minimal. I only use minimal skin care but that is it. My late parents said wearing too much makeup is bad for your skin. My late best friend told me that he said it looks like I have make up even when I did not. Maybe that is a compliment? Yes, removing make up is a big pain. You look tired and pale too.

Take a look at a video of his from two years ago, say, “Test Your Korean Listening - TTMIK Level 3” (you look, too, 승완!) and then ask “Is wearing makeup a good choice?” You bet! It really evens out the skin tone and creates a nice glow on camera. It’s really interesting and surprising what a difference it makes. Thanks for some unexpected insight.

The basic thing is the perspective. It's actually a matter of how you think about yourself. The reason why K-pop idols as well as male celebrities across the world wear makeup is,they are trained like this. They are made to think that you'll look good only with make up on. If you think you look beautiful without it,it means you're confident about yourself. People of this materialistic world judge others by their looks, but in reality no one notices the good points the person has. I'm personally against the females using makeup as well because gone are the days when it was used to enhance our already beautiful features, now a days it is more like a trend going on and everyone following it blindly. So I request to please spread a message that everyone is beautiful and they don't require makeup.

I think everyone understands that when you're on camera you need to wear makeup, regardless of gender. Although sometimes Kpop stylists go *WAY* over the top, far beyond what's necessary to counter the lighting.
Aside from that, as with most things, wearing makeup is a personal choice. Personally, I wouldn't date a man who wears makeup. I prefer a masculine man, and -IMO- masculinity does not include a bunch of primping and preening. Besides, who wants their bf to be prettier than them? :)
Lastly, guys have historically had it so easy in this area, so I can't understand why they would take on this extra burden. Well, I suppose I do understand it, unfortunately. Confidence, intelligence, strong moral character, kindness, and (at least) a dash of humor are the most attractive qualities any man can have. More of that, and less primping, please! 🤗

I don't think men should wear makeup outside of being an idol or filming for a movie, because I know actors get light makeup done. I as a man, found it forgien for men to wear makeup [in the Kpop industry] when I'd first seen a Kpop music video. But after listening to Kpop for years, it's normal in my eyes and I see no problem with it as long as it doesn't make you look like a girl. I see a lot of idols who look so feminine and girly in the industry and even *act* girly because Korean society, at least in the Kpop area, promotes a lot of what I like to call '귀엽다 male', which I find to be weird and even sometimes appalling.
If a man is doing idol business (performing at concerts, on KBS and that, going for an interview, a fan meeting, whatever) and he *does* wear makeup as all male idols do, then he should wear makeup. I have no problem with it. It can give an aesthetic that can't be achieved with his natural look, oftentimes. But if his just an average man, learning how to do makeup and wearing it isn't good. It's not masculine. As long as the makeup doesn't make him look girly, I have *no* problem with it.
They guys and girls in the comments saying it's okay outside of the parameters I gave aren't stationed in reality.

I think it's great that men take care of themselves. When applied correctly you can't even tell. Wearing makeup has nothing to do with masculinity at all. I wish American men took better care of their appearance. I hate that when a man goes all out and really takes care of themselves and their appearance here, they are given the label "metro". Why the label? It's just a man being a man who cares about himself and doesn't feel the need to be sloppy and unshaven. The US is weird.

Before european colonisation and christianity make up was part of most cultures around the world. From America to Africa and then to Asia, everyone except for Europeans wore make up, mostly for religious purposes. Europeans are the ones that convinced our ancestors about the whole 2 genders only thing and that make up is only for girls. Our ancestors' ways are much better so why listen to europeans when we could re-learn the old teachings of our people?
Make up is one of the best ways to express yourself in an artistic way that truly harms nobody so y'all shouldn't ever feel bad for wearing it.

Have to say there's nothing wrong with men wearing making up. The history of make up tells us it was a male thing to start with for noble men who had power and money. Women wearing make up were seen as 'Sex Workers'. It wasn't for women to wear at first then the rich noble ladies joined their men wearing make up. Make up become popular over the centuries and become cheaper and easier to make. Along the way less men wore it and more women wore it. Depending which part of the world you lived in. As a women I've never really enjoyed wearing make up and only do so on special occasions and when I'm on stage.

i love that ur touching on this subject. regardless of gender, makeup is a fun form of expression. i think asking "why" men wear makeup is moving us backwards. why need a reason? just go with the flow ✓

I don't know what's the problem with men wearing makeup??
If girls say men and women should be treated equally then why girls wearing makeup is ok and men wearing it is not masculine.
As long as you're happy do anything you want

I Think It's Good For Men To Have A Simple Skin Routine. Makeup Optional. Lips Mandatory. I Have Seen Too Many Men Unconcerned About Lip Care. Lol! Actually Had To Ask A Male Friend Why He Wasn't Wearing Lib Salve Or Blistex. He Said Didn't Want To, Proceeded To Kiss Me, I Jumped And Told Him, Oh! You Cut Me, My Lip Is Bleeding...No It Wasn't But I Know He Would Have Not Appreciated Me Kissing Him With Dry, Crusty Lips. Lol! I Understand When The Seasons Change, It Could Create Problems Even With Skin. But Ya Gotta Try To Keep Those Lips Kiss Ready. Lol!

Sorry cannot get into men wearing makeup. Stage makeup or movie making make up is different and movie makeup you can't even tell they are wearing some base for the camera. Men wearing makeup is too effeminate.
