Love your videos, you are so honest in your opinions, and as I’m still a fairly new beginner to sewing garments, I have really learnt a lot from watching you.This video was very helpful, when I started I fell into the size trap, thought although in shop bought clothes a 14-16 was my size, I soon got the idea that I needed to check actual sizing as on most I was a size 18-20, and a lot of patterns didn’t go up to that size, especially the free ones on magazines, and I wasn’t qualified enough to grade up sizes, so what a waste. Love that colour of your cardigan, it really suits you. Thank you for helping those of us with only limited experience to progress.x
To help with pressing fatigue, I created a fairly wide work surface just for sewing, using 2 ikea L-shaped deals that attach to the cubby shelves and just used L-brackets to attach the second desk flush to the first that is connected to the shelf on the other side. I cut out and sunk my sewing machine so the feed surface is flush with the table top, and (because I'm left handed) also sunk and flush (very slightly raised, maybe 1cm) a mini ironing board, which was the perfect length to fit on my desk with a bit of clearance on each end. Finally, I got a cordless iron and wall mounted it where it is easily within reach. It heats while sitting in the base and I just leave it on the whole time. With this setup, I can scoot/swivel my chair a bit and scoot my project quickly from the machine to the board, grab the iron and quickly press without needing to fuss with cords getting in the way. The biggest downside with the iron is it doesn't get super hot/steamy and won't always get a super crisp press on super heavyweight fabric (which I use quite a bit when making historical garb for re-enactments). But it's perfect for all regular fabrics and still works 90% of the time even with the very heavy fabrics, which I have resigned myself to needing to use a heavy duty board/iron often anyway, thankfully there are a lot of long, straight seams, which reduces the back and forth. Hope that helps! PS: I also have a rare chronic illness (Hereditary Coproporphyria) that leaves me incredibly fatigued and suffering from quite severe neuropathy in my hands, arms, and legs. So I am definitely all about making my workspace perform at maximum occupancy for my specific needs. While I would love to have the super cutesey spaces that I see in these videos, they just aren't functional for me so I have resigned to function over visual appeal. 🤷🏼♀️

I totally agree with not buying patterns that don't come in my size. You expect to make alterations for a good fit but I won't size up any more. If pattern companies dont want my money that's ok I will go to someone that does. Also don't be afraid of the size numbers, they are just numbers no one knows what size it is unless you tell them. I like the way you say "practice is progess" I bet there is no one in the world that is perfect..... now perfection is a myth. Ah but the pressing , can't agree there. Hi, I just found your channel, and am enjoying your honesty! I'd like to add the myth that interfacing isn't necessary. The first thing I ever made was a Halloween costume for my then-5-year-old son. Referring to the notions list on the pattern envelope, I gathered all the items in my cart, but refused to buy the interfacing thinking, "It's just a costume, I won't need it!" Spoiler alert, I needed it. The shirt collar was harder to handle than it should have been, and was limp and sad when all was finished. Fortunately, kindergartners are easy to impress, and my son wore his costume well after Halloween until he outgrew it. Years later, when I worked in a fabric store, I always made sure to tell beginning sewers not to skip the interfacing!
Lol I have been sewing over 50 years and still don't sew straight because I like to drive my machine fast. Love the noise. Done is better than perfect is what I say. God bless you and thanks. Meg
Look up on YT the tailor’s way of cutting out bias binding. Tailor’s basically take a yard of fabric and fold it a certain way and use all the fabric, not just the bias strip that wastes so much fabric. Love you!
I lost my Sew Jo as well. I have so many things I want to make, wall quilts, large quilts (just learning quilting). I want to make clothes but I have made a few things that do not look good on me so I basically gave up on that. When I was sewing 30 years ago, a pattern would fit me right out of the package. I don’t know enough to make all the adjustments. So I spend time buying fabrics and watching sewing videos! Love your channel! Thanks for all you do. You are an excellent seamstress!
I love this video! Just on the buttonholes part where you’re saying that your practice buttonholes come out perfectly but as soon as you go to the garment it goes horribly wrong. That happened to me all the time but then I read somewhere (or maybe heard on a podcast, can’t remember now) that if you put in a fresh needle just when you’re about to do the buttonholes it helps. Well I’ve done that for the last few I’ve made and can honestly say it’s made a massive difference for me! They come out brilliantly! I’m assuming the project needle has become dull by the point it’s buttonhole time which is why it tends to show off? Clearly I dunno the science behind it, ha! Anyway thanks so much for your videos. I stumbled across your channel a few weeks ago when looking something up and I’m so glad I did. Your videos are great! So funny and always inspire me to get back on my project when I’ve lost my sewjo. Thanks!

I would love to see a video on bias binding making, also a video on invisible zip insertion would be very helpful. Hi Claire, thank you for your inspiration. I’ve been sewing since I was 12. I love it! My mother is still madly quilting at 90. I appreciate your advice and support for good “enuf”. As I said my Mom is a quilter and she is particular about her sewing. I am learning all the time when I sew, thank you UA-cam. It took me a week of searching through videos that were finally able to get through my learning style to change a crew neck into a v neck t shirt. Maddening but I finally saw something and it just clicked. Ah ha😊. I remember sitting in front of the computer crying because I couldn’t figure out knitting. When I finally did, I realized that making a mistake at the beginning and continuing on was the mistake. Like in math…. Deb
I love to make my own bias tape! One thing I try to stress with beginners is that you just need to accept that Mr seam ripper will be your best friend. *sigh
I believed a lot of that stuff too, a year ago when I came back to sewing! It’s really amazing how far you can come in such a short space of time if you try and bust those myths! For me now it’s matching fabric to the patterns but that really is another learning curve! Them wot never made a mistake never learned! Great vlog❤️
All patterns will look good on me. Mmmm. I discovered the indie pattern companies recently after taking up sewing again. I like that the indie patterns have inclusive sizes shown on real people of all sizes and ages.
Your comments about buying patterns that don't suit you ring so true. I'm not plus sized, but I'm short. I get so excited to make floor length dresses or loose fitting and long tops, and then they drown me out when I wear them. I wish there was a larger variety of models on the pattern packages so everyone could get a better idea of how the garments will look on them.
I used to unpick, unpick, unpick if my sewing was not in a straight line. Nowadays it must be really wonky before I do that! Added to that : my sewing room is my happy place most of the time. I love the fabric showing at the back. Thanks for sharing.
Heart warming video!! Not sewing perfect --- for the most part, if they see these imperfections they are too close. Most people don't notice them. I do as little handsewing as possible. Got very good at blind stitching and stitching in the ditch. Do not use shank buttons because I can't sew them on by machine. Lastly I don't buy patterns or fabric just because I like it. I buy to make now!! Downsizing in patterns I've never/will never use, donating fabric that was on the shelves for years was a lesson to me.
Fun video, and so relatable! As a musician for an entire lifetime, I have learned that it is never about achieving perfection but how your experience gets you out of a problem. I try to do that with my sewing. It is all about the practise, which enables one to get a feel for zippers buttonholes, bias binding ( that one is still waiting to be tried) . I do iron like a fiend, as I love the difference.And finally I never sew past 8 pm... always my worst mistakes! 😃 🇨🇦
What a great point you made there, it made me look at a different subject than this but related to it at the same time...parenting (while being worried about their well-being and future, but also letting them learn from practicing) I need ALOT of help in remembering this key point (practice makes progress)

It’s for sure a trying time for all of us. I have seen quite a lot of videos where people are talking about losing their sew jo. Me too, I just can’t seem to get started. I just finished a robe for a minister, he wanted these stripes put on the sleeves. What a job! This is the second one that I’ve done for him, I think he has one more, but not sure. Everyone has these assumptions when they first start sewing. I had none, because I started sewing when I was about 6 or 7 years old. My grandmother was a seamstress and made clothes for people, so I was taught early how to do certain things. Her philosophy was, “Practice makes perfect”. Each technique had to be practiced until it met with her approval, a daunting task to be sure. I can tell you from experience that practice does make progress, the more to practice, the better you get, that’s why we make muslins. Stay safe and sane.

Awesome video. I almost gave up sewing recently when I decided to sew a pair of pajamas in flannel. I swear I will never sew flannel again. It had a plaid pattern that I desperately tried to match and did OK but that stupid collar really screwed me up. For me collars are the hardest thing to do but I really love them. And the flannel was so hard to get straight. It dragged against itself and was terribly hard to line up. I'm not done with it yet but hope to finish before winter is over. I told myself I was just no good and had no talent or skills for sewing so quit wasting money on more fabric. Just sew up what you have and forget about it. So you can see that your video was just what I needed to hear. Thank you!

For years I thought my results should be fine if I just went slow n followed instructions. Then I learned about fabric choices, the value of practise practise and practise, sigh. My stuff has never been perfect but some are wonderful to me. Loved this!

Thank you for this! As a new sewer, I've found myself dealing with all of these. And I would love a video on grain lines (if you haven't already made one.) I have to use thrifted bedsheets and other repurposed fabric, so most of the time there isn't a convenient selvage edge to measure from. I'm so grateful for you taking your time, and precious energy, to do these videos. I wish you every success, and all happiness!
Thanks. I dont think there's enough content for a whole video on grainlines but a tip to find the grain is snip into your bedsheets near the edge and then rip the fabric. It will rip on grain.

As for cutting on grain.... sometimes you can’t! If a woven fabric has been poorly woven, which is often the case!, not a thing you can do about. Pulling and stretching diagonally will work if the fabric has been woven with the correct tension on both warp and weft, and just been put on the bolt unevenly.

Like you, I have a tremor, and hand sewing can be very difficult. I try to avoid it if possible. Sizing is one of my pet peeves, I don't remember there being such a large difference between store bought clothes and pattern companies back when I started sewing 40+ years ago. So many of the big 4 patterns don't even go up to my size. I have found that the Indie pattern companies are so much better about size inclusiveness.
@@Penguinandpear I was diagnosed when I was 9 (way back in 1975) with Benign Hereditary Tremors. At the time, there was a drug I could go on, but if I ever stopped taking it, the tremors would be worse. I just live with it and find ways to work around it, like not hand sewing whenever possible. LOL
I know I’ve only just found your channel, however can you please do a video for us newbies. On fabric, grain line, selvages,warp, ease etc. Its all double dutch to me at the mo. Thank you
I love your videos! I have been sewing garments for over 50 years and I am still learning. Your approach and demeanor is just so darn pleasant. I just finished watching your sewing myths video and I would love more information on how to select flattering patterns. You would think at my age I would know what looks best on me, but I am still making poor choices. If you have any tips or suggestions, I would love to hear more about that.
Quite a few home truths there, and brought back some memories that made me giggle. This kind of video has great value when learning all by yourself. UA-cam has gained a lot of really great sewing teachers and sewing groups since I started watching, or perhaps It's just when found them. Button holes are lots of people's nemesis! Glad you feel better I'm sewing lots of new mother and newborn baby things. When I get all these done I expect to be a GRANDMA for the second time and also one of my cousins is going to be a new grandma and I'm sending her daughter some nursing coverups also. I have some rhubarb and some lillies coming up, so spring is definitely on its way Doesn't mean it won't snow again. 😉

Welcome back Claire! I SO agree about seeing the patterns on people of my size. This is one thing the Indies are so good at. Helps when we put the patterns we use on our posts or videos - it is so helpful to see any pattern on different bodies. Also agree about pattern sizes, I have no idea what I am in pattern sizes, I just go by measurements (upper bust because I fba everything). Thanks for this :)
Thank you for this video! I really relate to the problem with the grain line that you explained. I have bought really expensive fabric that is not on grain... it is maddening! And the sizing issue is also a pet peeve of mine! How many times have I made a garment only to find it is too big here and too small there! I have started to measure the pattern for the finished garment measurements... it is more reliable than the envelope measurements! And buttonholes are a nightmare.. I sweat every time I do them... hoping that they look as good as my sample ones.... I relate to all the issues you have raised! Thanks again for the video and stay well!!!

Your video is DA TRUTH! You are amazing! Everyone should watch this! I also love hearing about you have pushed on. That is your super power. Being unstoppable makes one...well unstoppable! 😍 I adore making my own bias binding now and despise the bought stuff now. I have cut it off from favourite self sewn stuff because it‘s so horrible. I am also doing something that I‘ve never done before and loving it! The sugaridoo bernina quilt a long. I would never ever have guessed how much I like cutting all those strips and putting em together. The scraps are being patchworked into a big piece that may become a big ol blanket. (See Karen at just get it done quilts for how to sew straight.) Sewing myth 11 if you can‘t sew straight then there‘s nothing to do but practice. Not quite. Karen shows you in her video a couple of tips that have made all the difference! What I used tohate about sewing is either keeping all the scraps of my beloved material or throwing it away. Now I can use a pice that’s as small as 5 by 5 cm...cause I got the knowledge! Ahh buttons and zippers...I promise to practice those too! Together we‘re strong! Keep pushing on!

Thank you for your videos! Since I am working from home, I have been getting my craft room/office in order. In doing so, I uncovered my sewing machine that my mother gave me 20 years ago because I have always wanted to learn to sew. I started with masks in August 2020 and then moved to baskets and purses. I tackled one zipper that was a little wonky but was not to terrible. I am considering baby clothes next but buttons are intimidating so I found your videos and have been watching about what to do and not do. Thank you so much for your help and encouragement!
Lovely to listen to you again Claire, my myth was about unthreading, I used to waste so much thread because I'd been told to always cut thread at the reel then pull from needle end. This wastes over a foot every time, when all we need to do is lift the presser foot to release the tension discs and take the reel to the front end. Then we can just wind it back on. Imagine the amount of expensive embroidery thread wasted everyday. I lost my mojo for years until my youngest grandchild asked," what's that Nanny? Ooh, can I have a go?" I got so much pleasure from teaching her, that now she's become a teenager and lost her mojo, but mine is in full flow again. I'm trying all the things I never did before. One day, she will want Nanny to teach her some more. Do you have a young person you could pass on your knowledge to?

I’m 69 and have been sewing human garments since I was 11. I proudly wore my clothes to school or dances or wherever. Now I imagine that my early efforts looked very homemade but I was good enough to make clothes for people who actually paid me! There were no jobs available in my small town (600 people) so sewing was the only way I could earn money. I sewed for school plays for my school and eventually for my children’s schools. And at the age of 53 finally got my dream job of costuming in a professional theatre! It was the best job I ever had and I loved it immensely. Unfortunately I became quite ill with meningitis and became disabled. So after 4 years of loving my stitching job I was forced to retire.🙁 I had forgotten everything and to this day I can’t remember how to do many sewing things. But I’m working my way back slowly. Losing my “sewjo “ is the perfect discription of what happened to me. I just discovered your vlogs today and low them. I love your candor and you will surely help the uninitiated to start sewing. I used to fancy myself “the sewing missionary” when I worked in a fabric shop, trying to get people to sew. You’re doing that now. I can’t wait to watch more of your videos. Blessings

I started sewing a year ago. and watching UA-cam videos and different sewing things on FB I felt so intimidated. I started a local sewing class and it has helped my confidence so much. I have made a lot of bags, then I took the plunge and I have completed two skirts for myself and a dress for one of my granddaughters. I can relate to your health issues I have had me/cfs for 30yrs this year.

I didn't sew button holes if I could skip them. In Homec we used singer button holers. This was in the early 1960s!! They had a little machine you attached to your machine and it made the best button holes I have ever seen. I bought one and an older Singer machine just for doing button holes. I can relate to many of your myths. I find I want to race through sewing and I would be much more satisfied if I could slow down and smell the roses. I hope you are doing well as we still are wearing masks and barely going out. ,
I think I was lucky enough to avoid the same myths when I started sewing, but I believed in some other things that have turned out not to be true. But the pattern sizing was definitely a puzzle for me and I kept making massive things when I started (I didn't understand the wearing ease for quite some time) 🤣
You are so inspiring. I am working on my first Fuller and I am dreading doing buttonholes. I just had to unpick what seemed like a mile of topstitching. Even with a walking foot it stretched and got all wonky. So I need to figure that out. I will probably try reducing the pressure foot pressure. Anyways, nice to see you back. Take care!
Thank you. Sorry to hear this! Minimal handling can cause fabric to stretch out so if at all pulling when it goes through this would cause these problems. If it's not that try reducing pressure but I wouldn't have thought it was that as the walking foot pulls the fabric through equally. Let me know how you get on x
I do get motivated from the poor people that need to sew so I encourage myself to make my own clothes to feel proud and that way I can spend my time doing smithing useful I use to rush when making something now I take time to observe and then this way I avoid mistakes and go at your own pace
It´s funny, if you look at shop bought stuff, it isn´t perfect because it is made at great speed and no love. So don´t feel bad if things aren´t perfect. Chances are there is way more care and love put into home made garments than some shop bought stuff. Claire, with your tremor, how do you thread a needle when you handsew? Do you have tool?
The Grain confuses me too, if you have or can make a video, please help. I am new here and I have made so many of the same mistakes and believed some of the myths too.
Everything you’re saying relates to me so I thought I’m struggling but really it’s just practice makes perfect and life’s everyday to day circumstance but I also do know poor ladies who need to sew for a living big space or small space accessories or not they sew for a living which I think for me they inspire me bcs I sew as and if I want to and there is a different approach every body’s situation is dfrnt
I really don't like hand sewing. It sucks. But for me I prefer to hand stitch a running stitch before sewing as a basting stitch instead of pins or clips. I do like hand embroidery cuz it's relaxing. I'm so weird. Outfit patterns confuse me. I think making my own patterns would b better. I just haven't tried my hand in making myself an outfit. I have made outfits for my kids. That was long before I knew what I was doing. I do make other things like bags and zipper bags. I've made book marks and cord wraps. Right now I'm making fabric cards and momerial hearts. I've made my own patterns. U should b very proud of urself for as far as u have gotten in the length of time u have been sewing.
I find it funny that I used to be able to make 4 step buttonholes with no problem. Now I would be lost without my one step buttonhole. I’ve been sewing since I was 9 (I’m 57) and pressing is a religion to me. A good press can hide a multitude of sins. If you can’t press it out, then rip it and do it over.
My problem is that when I cut a pattern to my body measurements on the pattern, it always ends up too big!! My body measurements against patterns say I should be a 20-22, but i find that if I cut an 18, it fits me much better!

Hi, I just found your channel, and am enjoying your honesty! I'd like to add the myth that interfacing isn't necessary. The first thing I ever made was a Halloween costume for my then-5-year-old son. Referring to the notions list on the pattern envelope, I gathered all the items in my cart, but refused to buy the interfacing thinking, "It's just a costume, I won't need it!" Spoiler alert, I needed it. The shirt collar was harder to handle than it should have been, and was limp and sad when all was finished. Fortunately, kindergartners are easy to impress, and my son wore his costume well after Halloween until he outgrew it. Years later, when I worked in a fabric store, I always made sure to tell beginning sewers not to skip the interfacing!

Look up on YT the tailor’s way of cutting out bias binding. Tailor’s basically take a yard of fabric and fold it a certain way and use all the fabric, not just the bias strip that wastes so much fabric.

I lost my Sew Jo as well. I have so many things I want to make, wall quilts, large quilts (just learning quilting). I want to make clothes but I have made a few things that do not look good on me so I basically gave up on that. When I was sewing 30 years ago, a pattern would fit me right out of the package. I don’t know enough to make all the adjustments. So I spend time buying fabrics and watching sewing videos! Love your channel! Thanks for all you do. You are an excellent seamstress!

I love this video! Just on the buttonholes part where you’re saying that your practice buttonholes come out perfectly but as soon as you go to the garment it goes horribly wrong. That happened to me all the time but then I read somewhere (or maybe heard on a podcast, can’t remember now) that if you put in a fresh needle just when you’re about to do the buttonholes it helps. Well I’ve done that for the last few I’ve made and can honestly say it’s made a massive difference for me! They come out brilliantly! I’m assuming the project needle has become dull by the point it’s buttonhole time which is why it tends to show off? Clearly I dunno the science behind it, ha!

Hi Claire, thank you for your inspiration. I’ve been sewing since I was 12. I love it! My mother is still madly quilting at 90. I appreciate your advice and support for good “enuf”. As I said my Mom is a quilter and she is particular about her sewing. I am learning all the time when I sew, thank you UA-cam. It took me a week of searching through videos that were finally able to get through my learning style to change a crew neck into a v neck t shirt. Maddening but I finally saw something and it just clicked. Ah ha😊. I remember sitting in front of the computer crying because I couldn’t figure out knitting. When I finally did, I realized that making a mistake at the beginning and continuing on was the mistake. Like in math…. Deb

I believed a lot of that stuff too, a year ago when I came back to sewing! It’s really amazing how far you can come in such a short space of time if you try and bust those myths! For me now it’s matching fabric to the patterns but that really is another learning curve! Them wot never made a mistake never learned! Great vlog❤️

All patterns will look good on me. Mmmm. I discovered the indie pattern companies recently after taking up sewing again. I like that the indie patterns have inclusive sizes shown on real people of all sizes and ages.
Your comments about buying patterns that don't suit you ring so true. I'm not plus sized, but I'm short. I get so excited to make floor length dresses or loose fitting and long tops, and then they drown me out when I wear them. I wish there was a larger variety of models on the pattern packages so everyone could get a better idea of how the garments will look on them.
Your top and sweater are my favorites so far. I think it’s because the green color is so perfect with your hair
I used to unpick, unpick, unpick if my sewing was not in a straight line. Nowadays it must be really wonky before I do that! Added to that : my sewing room is my happy place most of the time. I love the fabric showing at the back. Thanks for sharing.

Heart warming video!! Not sewing perfect --- for the most part, if they see these imperfections they are too close. Most people don't notice them.
I do as little handsewing as possible. Got very good at blind stitching and stitching in the ditch. Do not use shank buttons because I can't sew them on by machine.
Lastly I don't buy patterns or fabric just because I like it. I buy to make now!! Downsizing in patterns I've never/will never use, donating fabric that was on the shelves for years was a lesson to me.
Fun video, and so relatable! As a musician for an entire lifetime, I have learned that it is never about achieving perfection but how your experience gets you out of a problem. I try to do that with my sewing. It is all about the practise, which enables one to get a feel for zippers buttonholes, bias binding ( that one is still waiting to be tried) . I do iron like a fiend, as I love the difference.And finally I never sew past 8 pm... always my worst mistakes! 😃 🇨🇦

What a great point you made there, it made me look at a different subject than this but related to it at the same time...parenting (while being worried about their well-being and future, but also letting them learn from practicing) I need ALOT of help in remembering this key point (practice makes progress)

It’s for sure a trying time for all of us. I have seen quite a lot of videos where people are talking about losing their sew jo. Me too, I just can’t seem to get started. I just finished a robe for a minister, he wanted these stripes put on the sleeves. What a job! This is the second one that I’ve done for him, I think he has one more, but not sure. Everyone has these assumptions when they first start sewing. I had none, because I started sewing when I was about 6 or 7 years old. My grandmother was a seamstress and made clothes for people, so I was taught early how to do certain things. Her philosophy was, “Practice makes perfect”. Each technique had to be practiced until it met with her approval, a daunting task to be sure. I can tell you from experience that practice does make progress, the more to practice, the better you get, that’s why we make muslins. Stay safe and sane.
You had such a great experience learning to sew, I often wish I learned when young. Thanks re sewjo, I think its also due to lots of health stress too X

Awesome video. I almost gave up sewing recently when I decided to sew a pair of pajamas in flannel. I swear I will never sew flannel again. It had a plaid pattern that I desperately tried to match and did OK but that stupid collar really screwed me up. For me collars are the hardest thing to do but I really love them. And the flannel was so hard to get straight. It dragged against itself and was terribly hard to line up. I'm not done with it yet but hope to finish before winter is over. I told myself I was just no good and had no talent or skills for sewing so quit wasting money on more fabric. Just sew up what you have and forget about it. So you can see that your video was just what I needed to hear. Thank you!
Good vid. I can relate to all of what you are saying....Tip, use a strip of stabilizer when you make buttonholes, it helps tremendously.

For years I thought my results should be fine if I just went slow n followed instructions. Then I learned about fabric choices, the value of practise practise and practise, sigh. My stuff has never been perfect but some are wonderful to me. Loved this!

Thank you for this! As a new sewer, I've found myself dealing with all of these. And I would love a video on grain lines (if you haven't already made one.) I have to use thrifted bedsheets and other repurposed fabric, so most of the time there isn't a convenient selvage edge to measure from. I'm so grateful for you taking your time, and precious energy, to do these videos. I wish you every success, and all happiness!
Thanks. I dont think there's enough content for a whole video on grainlines but a tip to find the grain is snip into your bedsheets near the edge and then rip the fabric. It will rip on grain.

As for cutting on grain.... sometimes you can’t! If a woven fabric has been poorly woven, which is often the case!, not a thing you can do about. Pulling and stretching diagonally will work if the fabric has been woven with the correct tension on both warp and weft, and just been put on the bolt unevenly.
Have you considered practicing to make a bound button hole. They are super simple and look really great!

Like you, I have a tremor, and hand sewing can be very difficult. I try to avoid it if possible. Sizing is one of my pet peeves, I don't remember there being such a large difference between store bought clothes and pattern companies back when I started sewing 40+ years ago. So many of the big 4 patterns don't even go up to my size. I have found that the Indie pattern companies are so much better about size inclusiveness.

@@Penguinandpear I was diagnosed when I was 9 (way back in 1975) with Benign Hereditary Tremors. At the time, there was a drug I could go on, but if I ever stopped taking it, the tremors would be worse. I just live with it and find ways to work around it, like not hand sewing whenever possible. LOL

I love your videos! I have been sewing garments for over 50 years and I am still learning. Your approach and demeanor is just so darn pleasant. I just finished watching your sewing myths video and I would love more information on how to select flattering patterns. You would think at my age I would know what looks best on me, but I am still making poor choices. If you have any tips or suggestions, I would love to hear more about that.

Quite a few home truths there, and brought back some memories that made me giggle. This kind of video has great value when learning all by yourself. UA-cam has gained a lot of really great sewing teachers and sewing groups since I started watching, or perhaps It's just when found them. Button holes are lots of people's nemesis!

I'm sewing lots of new mother and newborn baby things. When I get all these done I expect to be a GRANDMA for the second time and also one of my cousins is going to be a new grandma and I'm sending her daughter some nursing coverups also.

Welcome back Claire! I SO agree about seeing the patterns on people of my size. This is one thing the Indies are so good at. Helps when we put the patterns we use on our posts or videos - it is so helpful to see any pattern on different bodies. Also agree about pattern sizes, I have no idea what I am in pattern sizes, I just go by measurements (upper bust because I fba everything). Thanks for this :)

Thank you for this video! I really relate to the problem with the grain line that you explained. I have bought really expensive fabric that is not on grain... it is maddening! And the sizing issue is also a pet peeve of mine! How many times have I made a garment only to find it is too big here and too small there! I have started to measure the pattern for the finished garment measurements... it is more reliable than the envelope measurements! And buttonholes are a nightmare.. I sweat every time I do them... hoping that they look as good as my sample ones.... I relate to all the issues you have raised! Thanks again for the video and stay well!!!

Your video is DA TRUTH! You are amazing! Everyone should watch this! I also love hearing about you have pushed on. That is your super power. Being unstoppable makes one...well unstoppable! 😍 I adore making my own bias binding now and despise the bought stuff now. I have cut it off from favourite self sewn stuff because it‘s so horrible. I am also doing something that I‘ve never done before and loving it! The sugaridoo bernina quilt a long. I would never ever have guessed how much I like cutting all those strips and putting em together. The scraps are being patchworked into a big piece that may become a big ol blanket. (See Karen at just get it done quilts for how to sew straight.) Sewing myth 11 if you can‘t sew straight then there‘s nothing to do but practice. Not quite. Karen shows you in her video a couple of tips that have made all the difference! What I used tohate about sewing is either keeping all the scraps of my beloved material or throwing it away. Now I can use a pice that’s as small as 5 by 5 cm...cause I got the knowledge! Ahh buttons and zippers...I promise to practice those too! Together we‘re strong! Keep pushing on!

Thank you for your videos! Since I am working from home, I have been getting my craft room/office in order. In doing so, I uncovered my sewing machine that my mother gave me 20 years ago because I have always wanted to learn to sew. I started with masks in August 2020 and then moved to baskets and purses. I tackled one zipper that was a little wonky but was not to terrible. I am considering baby clothes next but buttons are intimidating so I found your videos and have been watching about what to do and not do. Thank you so much for your help and encouragement!

Lovely to listen to you again Claire, my myth was about unthreading, I used to waste so much thread because I'd been told to always cut thread at the reel then pull from needle end. This wastes over a foot every time, when all we need to do is lift the presser foot to release the tension discs and take the reel to the front end. Then we can just wind it back on. Imagine the amount of expensive embroidery thread wasted everyday. I lost my mojo for years until my youngest grandchild asked," what's that Nanny? Ooh, can I have a go?" I got so much pleasure from teaching her, that now she's become a teenager and lost her mojo, but mine is in full flow again. I'm trying all the things I never did before. One day, she will want Nanny to teach her some more. Do you have a young person you could pass on your knowledge to?

I’m 69 and have been sewing human garments since I was 11. I proudly wore my clothes to school or dances or wherever. Now I imagine that my early efforts looked very homemade but I was good enough to make clothes for people who actually paid me! There were no jobs available in my small town (600 people) so sewing was the only way I could earn money. I sewed for school plays for my school and eventually for my children’s schools. And at the age of 53 finally got my dream job of costuming in a professional theatre! It was the best job I ever had and I loved it immensely. Unfortunately I became quite ill with meningitis and became disabled. So after 4 years of loving my stitching job I was forced to retire.🙁 I had forgotten everything and to this day I can’t remember how to do many sewing things. But I’m working my way back slowly. Losing my “sewjo “ is the perfect discription of what happened to me. I just discovered your vlogs today and low them. I love your candor and you will surely help the uninitiated to start sewing. I used to fancy myself “the sewing missionary” when I worked in a fabric shop, trying to get people to sew. You’re doing that now. I can’t wait to watch more of your videos. Blessings

I started sewing a year ago. and watching UA-cam videos and different sewing things on FB I felt so intimidated. I started a local sewing class and it has helped my confidence so much. I have made a lot of bags, then I took the plunge and I have completed two skirts for myself and a dress for one of my granddaughters. I can relate to your health issues I have had me/cfs for 30yrs this year.

I didn't sew button holes if I could skip them. In Homec we used singer button holers. This was in the early 1960s!! They had a little machine you attached to your machine and it made the best button holes I have ever seen. I bought one and an older Singer machine just for doing button holes. I can relate to many of your myths. I find I want to race through sewing and I would be much more satisfied if I could slow down and smell the roses. I hope you are doing well as we still are wearing masks and barely going out.

I think I was lucky enough to avoid the same myths when I started sewing, but I believed in some other things that have turned out not to be true. But the pattern sizing was definitely a puzzle for me and I kept making massive things when I started (I didn't understand the wearing ease for quite some time) 🤣
The pattern sizing is an issue that comes up time and again in the groups so were not alone x

You are so inspiring. I am working on my first Fuller and I am dreading doing buttonholes. I just had to unpick what seemed like a mile of topstitching. Even with a walking foot it stretched and got all wonky. So I need to figure that out. I will probably try reducing the pressure foot pressure. Anyways, nice to see you back. Take care!
Thank you. Sorry to hear this! Minimal handling can cause fabric to stretch out so if at all pulling when it goes through this would cause these problems. If it's not that try reducing pressure but I wouldn't have thought it was that as the walking foot pulls the fabric through equally. Let me know how you get on x
Press fusible interfacing on the back side. That should stop ripples.
I do get motivated from the poor people that need to sew so I encourage myself to make my own clothes to feel proud and that way I can spend my time doing smithing useful I use to rush when making something now I take time to observe and then this way I avoid mistakes and go at your own pace

It´s funny, if you look at shop bought stuff, it isn´t perfect because it is made at great speed and no love. So don´t feel bad if things aren´t perfect. Chances are there is way more care and love put into home made garments than some shop bought stuff. Claire, with your tremor, how do you thread a needle when you handsew? Do you have tool?

Everything you’re saying relates to me so I thought I’m struggling but really it’s just practice makes perfect and life’s everyday to day circumstance but I also do know poor ladies who need to sew for a living big space or small space accessories or not they sew for a living which I think for me they inspire me bcs I sew as and if I want to and there is a different approach every body’s situation is dfrnt
I really don't like hand sewing. It sucks. But for me I prefer to hand stitch a running stitch before sewing as a basting stitch instead of pins or clips. I do like hand embroidery cuz it's relaxing. I'm so weird. Outfit patterns confuse me. I think making my own patterns would b better. I just haven't tried my hand in making myself an outfit. I have made outfits for my kids. That was long before I knew what I was doing. I do make other things like bags and zipper bags. I've made book marks and cord wraps. Right now I'm making fabric cards and momerial hearts. I've made my own patterns. U should b very proud of urself for as far as u have gotten in the length of time u have been sewing.

I find it funny that I used to be able to make 4 step buttonholes with no problem. Now I would be lost without my one step buttonhole. I’ve been sewing since I was 9 (I’m 57) and pressing is a religion to me. A good press can hide a multitude of sins. If you can’t press it out, then rip it and do it over.

If you google 'continuous bias binding,' you'll find a way to use less fabric. There are more seams but it's a great technique!

My problem is that when I cut a pattern to my body measurements on the pattern, it always ends up too big!! My body measurements against patterns say I should be a 20-22, but i find that if I cut an 18, it fits me much better!
Thats because you are sewing big 4 patterns. You need to look at the finished garment sizes which can normally be found printed on the pattern
