There you go again! Such a quality video, so thoughtful and meaningful. Not just a lot of bla bla bla. You are so lovely and I am very fortunate to have found your channel. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, ideas, funny stories, horror stories.....well everything! :) Sewing has given me the power to present myself in many ways very nicely over any size range and feel not only confident, but cherished by me. Daily I can drape hugs over me that no one knows about! :) People just think it is clothing!
You are so wise!. Im glad I found you at the beginning of my sewing journey. In my old age (62) I rely on you tube to teach me. You have a way of knowing the pit falls of being a newbie and getting swept along. Thank you for stopping me spending money on ‘stuff’ I don’t need.
Great video as usual! The most amazing thing for me is learning to sew early in my life. Marrying, making for my self husband and babies, then my daughters formals, and wedding dresses. The most wonderful thing was when my granddaughter wanted to wear her mother's prom dress to her prom. She wanted to learn how to sew . She did help and now a few years later she is sewing for her babies. It wonderful to pass it on to your children and grandchildren. Stay safe.
Hi Claire. I agree with almost all your points about learning to sew. I learned to sew at an early age and you’re right about gaining many skills. However after more than 50 years of sewing, I’m still learning! I have finally learned to have fun with it especially with hacking patterns and breaking some rules with my creative sewing. I realized my garments don’t HAVE to look exactly like the pattern or RTW. So freeing of the creative mind! Keep sewing, keep using all your new-found skills, and keep enjoying the creative process! You’re doing a great job! Happy Sewing!
Thanks for sharing this video. I work in a fabric store and this is a great reminder of why I love where I work. The creative collaboration with others, the confidence sewing builds, etc. I too struggle with mental health issues. This video reminded me of the benefits of sewing. Hopefully it can give me the push to get out on those days when I wake up apprehensive of getting out of bed.
I totally relate to your time filling comment! I retired on health grounds a few years ago and really wondered how I would fill my time. I tried a few other craft activities which I loved but were not the best for my health. Finding sewing means I can now fill my time so easily. When I am not actually sewing I am looking for new patterns, watching sewing videos and tutorials, browsing online fabric retailers......and buying......so many ways to fill my time. Thanks to UA-camrs like yourself I am thoroughly enjoying my retirement. 😁👍👍
Claire, I couldn't agree more with all the great points you mentioned about sewing. I took sewing in high school and continued to sew for several years. I stopped sewing for a number of years, until just recently within the last 6 months when I was given a sewing machine from my daughter for Mother's Day. I haven't looked back since. I'm loving every minute of it. I have sewed a few garments but then I starting to learn how to quilt. I am currently working on my 3rd quilt and already have ideas and plans for the next two. Sewing is such a joy. I can't wait to get home from work and start sewing. I even get up early before work to get some more sewing in. I find your videos such a joy to watch. Cheers from Canada.
Claire, this is a really great video, thank you! As for me (from Germany), starting with next year I'll be a pensioner, and I am very happy that I started to sew again (did it about >30 years ago), not only an occasional table cloth, but garments, bags, other things. I'm experiencing much satisfaction when a garment is finished and it fits, and I think this will be a wonderful passtime when I'm not working anymore.
I'm new to sewing but can relate to many of the benefits you mentioned. One big plus for me is that sewing has tangible and lasting results. I work on a computer, so the reports I create may look nice, but still not a tangible thing. And the second job I have at home (household and caring for my kids) seldom have lasting positive products. Even my very first simple sewing projects (heming tablecloth) has resulted in things that always put a smile on my face when I look at them.
I have only made one garment, 3 quilts , masks, some stuffed animals. I love ❤️ it. Now I want to sew everything lol I’m making the face scrubbies you put out, I never thought about making them square.. duh 😂 it will help with sewing straight. I’m also going to make my grand daughters baby doll clothes. And a cape for my grandson. I love your videos they are so helpful. Thanks
I do agree that the social aspect of seeing sewists on you tube that enjoy the same thing as I do is wonderful. Having Lupus gives me pause of being around large groups because I don't always know how good I will feel or whether my immune system sillbe adversly affected. The online aspect also helps widen my choices of pattern choices. Can you believe that I had no idea of how many indie patterns were available before finding all of the different youtubers who sew and the discusions about them? What a resource you all have been. I know that I have sewn since I was 13 and I am now 62 and I love it as much if not more than when I first started. Practice makes a lot fewer mistakes but certainly not ALL mistakes. It is however nice to tweak things to fit your own style and preferences. Jus keep enjoying the pursuit of any of your hobbies because they broaden your world daily.
Thank you for this video. It is so encouraging. The most amazing thing (besides finding out that I can be creative) that has happened when I took up sewing...is that I have unique garments that fit my body.
Thankyou Claire! I love your channel. I have been struggling in the creative doldrums for years and discovering sewing has become a turning point. Calling sewing selfish would be like calling sleeping selfish! and I wouldn't give up sleeping either! X
I don't have any friends who sew but I was prancing through my house today showing my family members how my self drafted mock-up of a fitted waistcoat with side darts and fish eye waist darts, lapel and collar, hidden zipper, and button placket actually fit my DDD boobs properly. And of course no one could understand why I was completely mental over it. Without the online sewing community I'd feel very odd indeed. And, horribly, I came to this amazing hobby because I needed to provide my family with face masks this February.
we are here on earth to help each other and when we have a love of what we do, it makes it very easy to help each other and love what we do. You are fantastic teaching what you know and thank you for sharing yourself
For me the most amazing thing is having the capacity to bring to life the ideas I have in my mind. I've tried other arts and crafts but nothing has given me that as much as sewing has ❤️
In a word, confidence. I'm finally taking time to focus on myself and it's long over due. In the past 11 months I've lost just about 40 lbs. and need to replenish my closet with me-made items. It is all taking time but so worth it.
I love picking out fabrics. You can never have too much fabric. Then picking out some of your fabric and turning it into an outfit or a bag. My first big quilt was made out of my daughters treasured Concert Tee Shirts and she loves it. She will always have her concert memories and something I made all by myself. I enjoy your videos. They have good ideas and information.
I want to learn to sew because I find it hard to find exactly what I want in the shops and fast fashion is just not my thing. It is a very functional and useful thing to learn. It’s also creative and limitless. I like what you said about seeing a project through and gaining confidence. You are inspiring ;-)
Additional benefits that i didn't expect is learning and accepting my own body and shape. The feeling of being wrong because, for me, every dress i try was too short, to actually learning that it is due to a loooong torso, makes my body confidence skyrocket.
Another wonderful video. I can relate to 99% of what you are saying. Sewing is my escape both physically and mentally. I go into another world when sewing and finish a session feeling refreshed. Thank you Claire. I feel as if we have been friends for ever. You are a lovely, honest person and glad I first found your channel. xx
Claire, another great video & you give me confidence to have a go with new materials-for me I’ve not sewn with stretch fabrics, and although I’ve said it in previous weeks I will have a go with my overlocker. A channel like yours is so needed with lockdown, with such limited face to face contact. This last week I’ve been really frustrated with trying to get my head around a computerised machine, so different from my previous mechanical one. I’ve spent hrs going from manual to videos trying to programme things, when I just want to get on with sewing projects. So, finally listening to you has lifted my mood and made me have another go to sort things out. Thank you Claire.
So glad I could help. To start with stretch fabrics id recommend something like ponte roma. Its fairly weighty, great for winter warmth and is easy to sew or serge. Just make sure you get the right amount of stretch for your pattern.
Thanks you for your wonderful vlog. Fabric therapy is the best. I discovered quilting during coronacation. Finished a my first quilt (king sized. Go big or go home! Lol) Watch your videos. I haven’t ventured into clothing but I am thinking about it.
There are so many amazing things about sewing! I work in a school system not a teacher but equally as stressed! When I started sewing “again” I realized it was a better outlet than binge eating or binge drinking LOL. And because I know a little bit about brain development I knew that I was using a different part of my brain and it was amazing! I started thinking about how children really should learn how to sew. My mom taught me as a kid and I breeze through home economics in high school but I have not sewn anything since then… Until now! And I am hooked! The thing is I did not realize that there were so many things about sewing that I didn’t know… Like I did not know that there were computerized sewing machines LOL that is how long it has been since I have sewn. Sewing has taken my mind off of things and rather than stew over horrible interactions at work I can stew over what I am going to make LOL. I hope that you find this question because it is imbedded in all of this long rambling… But my question is about making what you love with slightly more expensive fabric. I heard you say that certain things you can buy for less but I have found that dresses that I could potentially buy for less are so poorly made that even if I buy mediocre fabric it is better than super “cheap dresses” I could buy. What are your thoughts on spending a little more to make what you LOVE (I’m on a strike from buying ready made)🤣
Hello! Thanks for sharing! I am all for spending more for quality fabrics. I used to buy cheap fabric but the garments never lasted, no matter how well sewn. So now I spend on more expensive fabrics but less often. I think it’s usually more sustainable to buy higher quality fabrics too.
@@Penguinandpear thank you for responding and yes, I agree and hoped you felt that way. I will wear my personally well made dress over and over rather than some cheap dress that lasts about three wears! You’re an inspiration!! Keep sharing!!
Thoroughly enjoyed your video , speaking from the heart ❤️, such wise words about the sewing journey , I do wish that I hadn’t left it so late in life to discover the sewing bug but now it’s ‘me time ‘in between caring for my husband , I love the challenge of sewing ,the thinking it out which takes you to another place and for me it’s been a real life saver , I love every moment of sewing and listening / learning from wonderful people as yourself , thankyou so much for being there and sharing your thoughts !!!
I have been sewing for over 50 years. What I got out of it was memories of my grandmother teaching me on a treadle machine which has pride of place now in my living room. Also seeing my children and grandchildren loving what I made for them and the memories I hope they will take with them always.
Your top is lovely. I think you are a highly creative person and am surprised that you ever thought otherwise. I started to sew to get clothes in fabrics I liked that actually fitted me and that is my main benefit. The benefit that most surprised me was the mental health one. Especially during lock down, it's great to have a creative hobby that's not primarily based around a computer screen. Something practical to get absorbed in. I also love the community aspect.
2004: We experienced four hurricanes, twice lost power for a week, and the stress on everyone was tremendous. Getting together with my sewing community was mentally healing, even when we didn’t sew. 2020: My daughter called asking me to sew masks for her practice. Their PPE had been on order for months, and they were reusing disposable masks. I made over 100 masks and many headbands until I had to stop for shoulder surgery.
Lovely video Claire:) My favourite part of sewing is that it’s an outlet for creativity. A close second is connecting with all the wonderful sewists online and in person (as rare as that is, lol). P.S., how FABULOUS is that top you’re wearing!!? 😄
What can I say except, thank you. It's been years since I used a sewing machine. My 6 children had most of their clothes made by me, knitted, crocheted and sewn. My health? I'm exhausted! But you gave me strength to know that pacing myself, or sleeping all day, is fine. So I shall happily keep pottering on, no longer getting frustrated by my lack of get up and go, that got up and went. Thank you again. xx
I can relate to meet ups, and making friends. I visited a local weekly meetup for quite some time, and made a few friends, and one close friend who turned out to share a few hobbies/interests with me. I can also relate to the inspiration I get from others. Twice a year, there's a huge fabric market and women (and men!) from all corners come there to buy fabric. It's a joy to just sit in the coffee corner, watch what they are wearing, and marvel at the craftsmanship and creativity. 'Me time' is also something I can relate to. I really LOVE sitting behind the sewing machine, while listening to an audiobook. For me, that's the ultimate relaxation: being creative and listening to great stories :D
I HATED 'needlework' at school; the teacher was a martinet and openly mocked work that fell short of perfection - which mine did spectacularly! I was so tense my stuff was literally marked with blood, sweat and tears. (She described my attempt at a stuffed toy as an 'abomination'. ) And yet after leaving school l was drawn to sewing. The freedom was AMAZING. I've made clothes, curtains, pet beds, toys and recently started quilting. Perfection is a myth but, as you say, practice makes progress and you have so much fun in the journey!
I just started to sew. Started with trying out simple underwear patterns, and honestly even if no one can see it but me I feel really proud of what I've made, especially since they're comfier than any other underwear I've bought from the store! I'm excited for when I get good enough to sew my won skirts and dresses--two things that are so hard to find in my size and in colors/designs I like. Can't wait to make stuff for my friends too!!
The words time filler resonated with me essential during these lockdowns😬. It’s something to do and so much more. As a fairly recently retired teacher of early years going back to sewing has given me the creative outlet I need in life. I don’t have real life sewing friends so your channel and others like you are such a joy and a source of inspiration thank you Claire 🥰🐝
I love your videos. I have knitted many things and crocheted lots of blankets. I have made curtains but only recently started making clothes for me. I am also new to you tube. I live in Normandy,France so online works for me. Still gaining confidence and lots to learn. Am making my second Indigo dress at the moment. Thank you so much
@@Penguinandpear yes that was what made me order the pattern. Am going to try coco next as really want to get started with jersey. Not much in the way of fabric around me so have to use online. The video I watched suggested ponte Roma which I had never heard of. Once I have ordered the pattern I will start looking for fabric. Going back into lockdown at midnight tonight so online will be my only option. I have been using Spoonflower which is in Germany. Keep the videos coming you are teaching me so much.
Thanks Alyson. I heard you guys were going back into lockdown. I hope it doesn't last too long. Ponte roma is a medium weight jersey. It will keep you warm in winter..that was my first jersey pattern too. Its so simple, it'll give you confidence for more!
I would use ponte roma. Due to the shape of the dress you need a fabric that will hold its shape. You can make it in a lighter weight for a draper look but for the first one I'd go ponte roma. Ponte roma is really easy to sew so that helps. Higgs and higgs will have some nice stuff in.
Such a good topic, thanks for sharing! I learned to sew 2 years ago, and there are definitely some amazing benefits to sewing. I've realized that my creativity and self-expression have really expanded. I enjoyed expressing myself through fashion before, but now that I can sew I don't have nearly as many limitations (sizing, styles, prices etc in shops). It feels very freeing, and it encourages me to think more deeply and openly about how I really want to express myself. I've really learned a lot about myself by using my imagination to create a tangible garment. And that is in just 2 years, with most of my closet still being store bought. I'm looking forward to many more years of constant learning :)
I have been sewing most of my life and the most amazing thing to date for me is I recently made my first coat. It's a lined trench coat style, the pattern is from Cashmerette and it turned out absolutely fantastic!!! (;o) Honestly I can't believe I did it, but I did. I feel like a million bucks when I wear it. I agree with you about the benefits of sewing. You become so proud of the work you do, every project increases your skill and there is never an end to the things you can learn about sewing - fabric, technique, thread, machines, irons and ironing, notions - it goes on forever, and I love that about the craft. As I have heard and I say quite often 'sewing keeps you sharp.' I also have to chime in about your comments about mental health and mood. When I get the opportunity to go into my sewing room I forget about everything except the task at hand. I find that pretty amazing as well.
Sewing has become a mental health lifeline for me. On days when my fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue rear their ugly heads, it seems like I just lose control. I don't know where to start or how to finish anything. Being able go to my sewing machine and make something simple, like a potholder or quilting block, that I know all the steps and skills, gives me a feeling of accomplishment. That helps make my feelings of worthlessness recede a bit and I may be able to make a day I thought was a total loss into something I can have some control over.
Hello dear, I relate so much to the way you discovered that you were creative, and it really blossomed when you found your passion. And most certainly the way it can straighten your spine, that growing confidence. And when you talked about the way that focusing on the project can be soothing, or energizing, that resonates too! And I feel so smart when I figure it all out, work out the kinks, fix the mistakes, meet the challenges, like way better than Sudoku! Trick is not to compare my journey with another's..
What a great video!! Amazing! I’m sure you’ll get great reviews!! Also the fabric of you top is gorgeous, looks super on you!!! Since I started sewing (at age 12!) and many years later I’m continuing to learn new skills and techniques! I’m a quilter as well!!! I’m still crazy about sewing!! 50+ years later!!
I found your channel a couple of days ago and I'm SO THANKFUL I did. I relate to you as I have chronic anxiety. I'm brand new to sewing, bought my first ever machine 2 months ago. I absolutely love sewing. When I am, its just me, the sewing project and my fave podcast. Sewing completely relaxing me. In the past week I've sold a dozen face masks by word of mouth, and can't wait to learn other projects. One day I hope to make this a business.
Thank you so much for another wonderful video. With your help, I made my first tshirt, style arc’s kim pattern. You would like it , it goes great with leggings. I used your laundry day tee video to help. You are my favorite person lol I’m binging your videos. I can learn so much from you. You are a great teacher and overall have great chats. Keep on making videos, just don’t over do it. I have a bad back and spending the day cutting and pinning really did a number on me,I need one of the tables you got for sewing. Could you tell me what it’s called an what the legs are that you used? I thought it to be reasonably priced. I thought all your points, in this video to be spot on.
Claire, making your own leggings, or whatever, can mean being able to match or coordinate your clothes, rather than spending hours shopping for it (and maybe never finding it). You can also get better quality. I wish I were a cobbler, as finding the right color of shoes that fit is tough.
Lovely video :) i have gained so very much from sewing! It is my "me time" my happy place, my only hobby (well, I play video games with my son too) and I feel such a sense of pride and accomplishment when I wear my me made garments!
Regarding skills that can be transferred to other things, garment sewers learn early on the cause and effect nature of altering a pattern. If you change one thing, you have to consider and envision what else that change may affect, e.g. an adjacent seam. As a result, I learned to examine all components and their relationships before making important decisions in life and business. I can often visualize an end result just as clearly as I can see a tailored garment in a sewing context.
Thankyou for the video 👍🏻 You found your tribe. So wonderful. ❤️ I am Starting to sew in my new craftroom. I have bought a Billy bookcase for storage. Now I have to buy a desk to sew on. I was thinking of the Skarsta high\low desk from Ikea wich is adjustable in hight. But I see you have an Alex drawer unit with a desk top. I would love that because I would gain a lot of storage with the Alex drawers. But our table in the livingroom, where I am sewing at the moment, is way to high for me. I sit on three cushions to prefent neckpain.😅 Can I get your opinion on the choice of your desk? do you have an adjustable chair to get in the right sewing position? Greetings from Holland 🥰
Hi, I do have the Alex drawers, with a table top and legs the other end. Its a nice set up and serves my needs. I wouldnt buy it if I was buying again though. I dont feel like the drawers have heaps of room but that maybe because there is chaos inside lol. I would get a moving table so I can adjust it. I have a regular office chair but lately every time I sit in it it deflates so will need a new one soon. I also have the tresle legs on another table top which I love as its waist height but the trestle legs take up a lot of room.

Thank you. I wish I found sewing earlier too
I have been sewing for over 50 years. What I got out of it was memories of my grandmother teaching me on a treadle machine which has pride of place now in my living room. Also seeing my children and grandchildren loving what I made for them and the memories I hope they will take with them always.
That is so lovely.
I also love the community aspect.
its a pleasure to watch you online I am from Canada and I have been sewing for about 20 years now and I just love it keep u[ the good work!!!
Thank you, it was a hack. Heres the video about this make ua-cam.com/video/N3mRsGayvpk/v-deo.html
Claire, forgot to say I thought you were looking much brighter and love the new hair colour really suits you.
I filmed this time when it was sunny out and it makes a world of difference to the look of the video.
Thanks - very nice to remind myself of all the positive aspect of why I love sewing. BTW love 💕 your hair color. The color suits you very much 🙂
I just started to sew.
I'm seriously impressed the first things you sewed was underwear! If you can sew underwear you can give anything a go! Good job!
@@Penguinandpear Thank you!
Thank you I am glad to help. I am in the same boat.
I absolutely love the top you're wearing!!
Thank you, it was a hack I did. Heres the video ua-cam.com/video/N3mRsGayvpk/v-deo.html
what a lovely top!
Love listening to you. You look lovely today. Love the pattern on your dress. Talking about your journey is great and yes a lot of us can relate.
I love your videos. I have knitted many things and crocheted lots of blankets. I have made curtains but only recently started making clothes for me. I am also new to you tube. I live in Normandy,France so online works for me. Still gaining confidence and lots to learn. Am making my second Indigo dress at the moment. Thank you so much
Thank you Alyson. Welcome! Did you see my indigo video?
Would you recommend ponte Roma for the coco or is there a better jersey. Normally I use Higgs and Higgs and occasionally spoonflower.
This really sounds amazing!
As I have heard and I say quite often 'sewing keeps you sharp.'
I also have to chime in about your comments about mental health and mood.
Thats lovely to hear!
I have received lots of inspiration from you! Thanks so much.
I'm so glad! Welcome! Sorry to hear you also have chronic anxiety, its a beast. Good luck with your future career in sewing!
Keep it up, that's fantastic!
I only wear black leggings and sourcing the right material to get a great fit isnt easy.
Lovely video :) i have gained so very much from sewing! It is my "me time" my happy place, my only hobby (well, I play video games with my son too) and I feel such a sense of pride and accomplishment when I wear my me made garments!
That sounds wonderful, I can definitely relate! 😍
I guess like you, my main benefits are an improvement in mental health and the wonderful friends I have made through sewing.
I love your channel very worthy of joining your patreon.
Thank you. I just closed patreon but I do have memberships. Theres a join button next to the subscribe button that gives more info.
Thank you!! I've been waiting for you to drop this video!!!
Love!
The other week my husband found a needle in his food, I don't know how it got there. I definitely didn't put it in there 😒
Oh! Im glad he found it!
Thankyou for the video 👍🏻
You found your tribe. So wonderful. ❤️
I am Starting to sew in my new craftroom.
I sit on three cushions to prefent neckpain.😅
Can I get your opinion on the choice of your desk? do you have an adjustable chair to get in the right sewing position?
Greetings from Holland 🥰
Hi, I do have the Alex drawers, with a table top and legs the other end. Its a nice set up and serves my needs. I wouldnt buy it if I was buying again though. I dont feel like the drawers have heaps of room but that maybe because there is chaos inside lol. I would get a moving table so I can adjust it. I have a regular office chair but lately every time I sit in it it deflates so will need a new one soon. I also have the tresle legs on another table top which I love as its waist height but the trestle legs take up a lot of room.
The high/low desk is a problem as it doesn’t go low enough for comfort as the lowest point is desk height.
Is it electric? Might be worth looking at standing desks from other companies...
Penguin and Pear - DIY Sewing thankyou very much for this information. 👌🏼🥰
Isobel Thanks so much 👍🏻😊
Selfish sewing. I've never heard of such. If anyone wants to learn to sew themselves all they have to do is get off their butts and do it.
