Love it. You don’t look like you sound Bud. Such a relevant topic. I did this conversion several years ago, left the Atwood collector plate in place and cut the Suburban hole to fill void. I did see they sold kits after the fact but am glad I didn’t try to buy it. The Burban is a good unit, the Atwood had a rash of board failures didn’t they? Keep up the good work, can’t wait to meet ya in MT one day.

They both used shit boards, always replace with dinosaur boards unless they are still under warranty.

I couldn't find the door conversion kit so took all the hardware from the Atwood 6 gal. W/H out of the frame. Cut out the frame so the Suburban frame would just fit inside the Atwood frame. You can take some 1"x 2" wood stock and install on both sides of the frame to fill the gaps. keep the Atwood door and cut a 4 " or 5 " square on the right side of door and on back side put a piece of SS wire mesh on the inside of opening and secure with some heat-ducting alum.- tape. This way you keep the door to cover the bigger opening as the original and have the heating exhaust on the right side. Then make some adjustment to secure the suburban as needed, drilling and screwing the sides in place. Can also use the heat duct tape to put around the inside of the frame to keep any water leaking into the inside.

I am removing my Atwood and have opted for the Dometic. What I'm concerned about is that my Atwood shows 5 wires coming out while the Dometic seems to have 4. The Atwood has a yellow wire I don't see on the Dometic. Can you explain that or direct me to a video on installation that includes wiring?

I had to order a water heater and the door from different places. I was willing to pay camping world prices but the door that showed to be in stores but not for shipping wasn't and the water heater was shipping only

When I retired I got a great deal on a 1989 Lazy Daze class and have restored it but my water heater just went south and completely lost ! IT's a Atwood G6a-8E I don't really want to spend a lot of money fixing it I rather buy a new one ! My problem is that I sold my home and on the road and have using the gym to shower. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly
appreciated in finding a new water heater for my old RV !

Your information is not complete. The depth of the water heater for the Suburban is deeper than the Atwood which is turned sideways in comparison. For most box trailers which have deeper cavity that's not an issue, but in many Airstream trailers, their is no extra space to add the extra deepth.

Could always go to a on demand tankless water heater which are smaller in size, might be an option.

I'm replacing a Atwood GC6AA-10E with Dometic WH-6GEA. They make a 9 gallon that's the same opening as the 6 and 4" deeper but it's harder to find and the model is WH-9GEA

    It’s been awhile.
Have you got or found a substitute for an Atwood water heater?
Mine is old. It fried. Been impossible finding a replacement.
I suspect you may have found a substitute….
Patti needs one because I’ve been evacuated and my Jayco 5th wheel will be my home ….
How long it will be my home is unknown but I want hot water😊

Hello, Atwoods are gone. Assuming you have a 6 six-gallon water heater, Dometic makes a replacement for it that is very similar, except it needs to be wider to fill the hole where the old water heater fit. Dometic makes a door kit that will work with the new water heater and make it look like you still have an Atwood heater. It is about as good as it gets, unfortunately. The door kits and water heaters are sold separately, but they are available.
If you have a 10-gallon, the Dometic 10-gallon fits with no issues. Thanks Eric

Anyone have any advise for finding a Gas Control valve for the Atwood 91602. I dont have the money to buy a completely new water heater. I just need the Gas Control valve.
Ive been using 1lb propane tanks. Sticking the burner tip in the burner tube. and heating the water that way. It is a Pain in the A**!
I cant find the gas control valve in stock ANYWHERE. Ive visited over 100 different parts suppliers and not one has one. Even Ebay doesnt have any.
Is there a different part # that would work?
    Water heater is Atwood 6GAA-8
