I work with social photography (weddings and birthdays) and studio photography (family, portraits, ballerinas). In my studio and in the external photos at the moment I only use Softboxes (QR P90 among other Godox modifiers (square and rectangular) attached to the Sk400, Ad400, Ad200 pro, V860 and VL1 flashes. But I intend to use a 105cm white reflector umbrella both in the studio and outdoors.
Last 1 year i was using the Godox 120cm softbox umbrellas to light me ( subject) while shooting my youtube videos interior in my small 10/10 bedroom home studio. But now i hv switched to 80cm so that tye size suits my room and i use it with a godox sl60w light to light to light the subject(me) and do product shoots. Even recently made a video on it on my youtube channel 😊.
The 130cm is the perfect sweet spot for me, flexible with looks and still relatively portable. Main use is for outdoor portrait shoots. I would love to try the AD300 in combination with the 165cm, sounds like a winner
Definitely the 105 white is my go to umbrella. I use it with diffusion for editorial portraits on location. Its perfect for travelling and produces an incredible quality of light. I have various other sizes but almost always grab the 105.
What size and interior is your go-to umbrella, and for what kind of photo-shoots do you do? Comment below for a chance to win a Godox #Parabolic Umbrella #UB-165.
I use the AD-S65 with my AD300 pro for outside use. It's great as light, easy to set up and small to carry with me. In my studio I use several of your bigger softboxes, silver with double diffusers for soft portraits. Thanks for the clear explanations on how and what to use. Love your products and have purchased only Godox flashes, lights and ledlights over the past years. No complaints, keep up the innovative products for a reasonable price!
I use the 88-inch wing umbrella for both indoor and outdoor portraits. A very versatile tool since it can be used as a bounce or shoot-through. And you can even use the backing as a flag in either the tall or wide configuration. And speaking of tall or wide, you can shoot through horizontally if you have a low ceiling indoors or if you need to light a large group or large area.
I love the 165 with diffusion for versatility. Adjusting the distance to compliment almost all of my scenarios, wedding portraits, product and food shots.
My go to umbrella is 165 with a white interior and I do often (actually most of the time) uśe it with a diffuser. It's an amazingly versatile light modifier - I used it for corporate head shots, half as well as full body portraits and for large products photography. Using it with or without the diffuser, adjustingi the depth of the light placing insinde the umbrella - there's so much you can with that modifier to affect the light quality, that with the addition of being so compact when closed and packed and so lightweight, that 165cm white interior umbrella + diffuser is a number one light modifier for me! :)
I am a Commercial Photographer, and I use UBL-085S and UBL-085T for my Product & Portrait shoot. To create wider diffusion, use pair of AD-S5. Planning to get UB-105W and UB-165W for upcoming shoots. Thanks for information provided in a very systematic and simplified way.
Loved Your teaching of this Modifier - The "When, Why, and Where." From observing this video several times, I've learned some new ways as to how to place and use this modifier. THANKS
Thank you for providing this concise and useful info. The umbrella I use most is the white 85cm for environmental portraits. For this type of photo, I let the ambient light provide most of the illumination; the umbrella light adds just enough to help the subject stand out from the background. The small size of the 85cm umbrella is good because it doesn't run into furniture or knock things over!
85cm white is currently my go-to umbrella because of the size and my hot shoe flash. Recently got the AD600 so trying the 165cm white would be quite fancy and good for large group shots.
great introduction to umbrellas, I use speedlights at the moment, in a move to LF and film photography I am looking into what I need, flash and modifiers, I have Autism, and shoot architecture, boats, cars and trains. the only umbrellas I use are the ones you use in winter, to keep the rain off your hat :-)
130 & portrait. I just live the look so much and I love shooting outdoors. Also it’s an awesome backdrop for that all white back look. Amazing look everyone
My go to in size is the 105 and the silver interior for food photography. It gives me a natural light feel which is usually preferred by my clients and for those who want contrast shots, I can do that with just the silver interior.
After buying two Godox speedlights and the X2t transmiter which works superbly, I just placed an order trough Adorama the 130cm umbrella to supplement my other Godox 2x2 square softbox and my other umbrellas. Look forward to doing more portraits of family and friends. Im not a professional but do some wedding occasionaly.
Excellent video, this helps a lot with deciding on which umbrella to buy, I need a large umbrella for wedding portraits. I have decided that the 178cm octagonal soft box would be my go to umbrella. Already have 47in strip box which is is always my supporting light modifier to hi light my subjects hair, and to create separation from my background.
130cm silver reflective umbrella is my choice. It's not too big and still enough for full body shots. Silver gives me the highest light output. I can achieve everything from highest contrast without diffusion to soft light with diffusion and playing with the distance.
Namaste from Himalayan country, Nepal. Thank you for the detail info with demo of umbrellas. I am a commercial photographer and I use different kind of modifier as per need. I have 85cm translucent and reflective ones pair with my Ad400pro. I use reflective umbrella for soft skin like female models and translucent for male model. Sometime I alter as per my need. Other example, translucent umbrella for key and reflective for cut light/ hair light. We can use umbrella as a reflector (second source, flash power off mode)
I do primarily portrait, headshot, and fashion. My choice for the greatest versatility would be the 165 silver reflective with optional diffusion to cover the greatest number of situations.
I usually go with a 65”, white interior, reflective umbrella for shooting portraits. I find that this size is very versatile and can be modified by its positioning and distance quite easily. It is also great for doing environmental shots, as it can be placed a bit further away to allow for more even illumination of background and subject without loosing softness as would with something smaller; also will fit in most places unlike a 7ft one.
Great introduction to the umbrellas! I love using a big silver umbrella, the mix of a large light source with the slight specularity to the light gives a sunny feel to the light.
thanks! I recently decided to go professional so I'm trying to invest in new gear and grow my reputation. I just got the 105 try out some of the things I learned here!
I use a godox 120cm octagon umbrella on a godox S2 Bowen’s mount with speed lights flash. I use this for baby photography. I it help soften up the light for more natural skin tones looks and make every baby look like the perfect baby.
I'm looking at that 165cm with diffusion. I think it would be great for some studio work. Thanks for this video, and I'm I'm so glad Godox makes stuff like this affordable for photogs like me on a shoestring budget.
165cm with white interior would be my go to, possibly even the outer diffusion for creamy soft highlights. Looks exceptionally flattering for portraits which is what I’d use it for. Love these options!
I love the 130 silver with difusion for outdoor portraits I think it works better on a bright day👌but would love to try a white interior for indoor portraits when I don't need as much punch 👍
65inch silver deep umbrella w/diffuser. Envelopes the model and removes hard shadows but still gives nice specular highlights. Would use it up to full body but has the most interesting effect close to the model, wouldn't say it's my go to but would say it gets used a lot.
I have never used an umbrella, i usually use a soft box for portraits. I would pick the 130 or 165 if I were to use an umbrella. Thanks for the great video.
Parabolic umbrellas are my favorite modifiers. I use 51" and 64" bounce umbrellas, usually soft silver. Sometimes I use the diffusion sock. I shoot high school portraits and dance portraits.
I love the 105 silver interior with diffusion...it gives me the flexibility I need when shooting products or headshots...being able to adjust the light with great flexibility
I will probably go for 105 white reflective umbrellas for wedding, big but not huge so I can still use them in most places and the white gives me the soft shadow which will be perfect pair with my AD-B2 (2xad200pro) with V1 for hair light/colour gel.
I recently bought my first umbrella (reflective + 85cm) without knowing what it's good for.. Mainly bought to practice as I'm venturing into flash photography. See now that I would be better off with a 130 and white interior one, for general portraits.

I use a 101cm reflective white umbrella for portraits and I like it very much, it's easy, comfortable and gives me great results as an amateur hobby photographer.
I am fairly new to professional photography but I am slowly, with the help of great teaching videos such as yours, getting educated and equipped enough to turn a hobby into a profitable career. I prefer portrait photography and I am only starting to learn about all the different lighting options. I haven’t purchased any lighting, outside of the Godox VING V860IIC TTL Li-lon flash kit for Canon.
Thank you for the great video. I have just purchased my first light ad300 pro along with the 165cm white reflective umbrella, I can’t wait for it to arrive, i hope I can create some beautiful images.
A 105cm or 2 x 105cm with defusers are my go-to modifiers. This is because I do a lot of boudoir and there's frequently very little space. It make sense to learn how to make it work with the smaller modifier.
Just received my order of UB130W with silver reflector. Haven't tried it yet. I have been using a 95cm Godox octagon softbox with grid (bowens mount) and an 84cm shoot through umbrella for portraiture combined with AD200 PRO and a Ving 860 II. They were good enough for headshot and half-body shots and I'd love to try the larger one for whole-body composition.
The 105w would be a great choice for me as it’s versatile for shooting half body portraits for family and at weddings and parties as I am new to photography
I would prefer the white translucent umbrella 130cm n above since I do mostly family portraits Great video I use Godox light and I can never praise them enough they have been so reliable the ad 600 a
- goto umbrella for me: 130 white interior - outside shoots as fill light when photographing against the sun - portraits - I like to do full body shots. The 105W is big enough to fill the full size of my model's body.
I am using 105cm white umbrella with diffuser. But I prefer to use my first godox octabox 80cm and grid with godox ad-200. (My first godox flash. In fact I am the first user of godox flash in India before launching in India and nobody knew godox name.) Now I am proud owner of AD-600B, 2 units Ad-200, Ad300 pro and godox V1 N. I am using all these units for wedding and product photography. All these are working flawlessly and never failed. Only my X1N has developed a minor problem. It's power switch is not working. Since I brought it from china, the local service center in Mumbai refused to service the unit. It is very disappointing experience from godox service. So I have to purchase another transmitter unit. Anyway the godox products are excellent in quality and very reliable. I am sure you will introduce great products in future also. I am planning to purchase ML-60 bicolor which is recently launched.. Unfortunately at present it is not available in India. Best wishes to all Godox team.
I would definitely go for the 165cm with diffuser cloth and pair it with the AD200pro / MS300 STROBE Flash - Reason being I do outdoor & Indoor Photoshoots and this combination would do me justice as the setup is quick and portable - also the results are amazing - Umbrella would be a blessing especially for taking full body shots.
165cm would definitely be the best umbrela size for my Portrait photography because it even if it's a bit further away from the subject it still gives that soft light and it's also able to cover th full body of the model
GODOX UB-105W and GODOX UB-165W are my go to lights to use in the studio and on location. Would love to get my hand on a GODOX UB-35W because it seems to have the same light qualities of a 36" beauty dish for half the price. Great stuff
I have the 180cm silver reflective umbrella and I use it all the time, for a lot of music videos, online classes and commercial shots, its sooo soft and easy to use, it's my go to if I have space to use it !
I’d LOVE a 130 with white interior for full body portraits. I just bought a TT865S a couple of weeks ago and an ad300 pro a couple of months ago. I’m ALMOST set!
I do portraits more often and I got 85 with me right now with V30 Flash and SL600 video light. But would love to try 105 or 130 as it covers the more of a subject ♥️😀 Thanks Godox for making these affordable products for us
I believe the 105w would be a great choice for me as it’s versatile for shooting half body portraits for family and at weddings and parties as I’m just starting off with my godox collection of products
I use the 105w on the go and the 165w indoors along with an AD300Pro for fun shots, product and food photography. It's my favorite modifier for all around use and I have no regrets.
That 130 white umbrella is looking like my next go to modifier.
I've watched 100's of videos about studio/flash photography and this is probably the most useful one I've come across. Thank you!

The 165cm umbrella is my go to because I love to always have a soft look for my portraits and you can never go wrong with the 165cm umbrella

The Godox UB-165W silver interior is my go to umbrella for full body portraits. I do a lot of out door photo-shoots @justabes_media on instagram.
I don’t have yet umbrella. Only soft boxs. I made portaits

I use the 130 cm parabolic reflective umbrella diffused, for portraits, really soft light and loads of control. Works a treat with a bare bulb AD200

130 & 165 cm white-reflective + diffusion for weddings + portrait photography. Amazing light!
I would probably go with the 105 for versatility and white interior as I am into mostly portraits! Excited to explore more lighting set-ups and tips!
130 & portrait. I just live the look so much and I love shooting outdoors. Also it’s an awesome backdrop for that all white back look. Amazing look everyone

Typical Aries Tao video, very informative and very well presented - thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I have smaller umbrellas and thought about getting a 165, thanks for the demos to show the differences between the four sizes.
Excellent video, this helps a lot with deciding on which umbrella to buy, I need a large umbrella for wedding portraits. I have decided that the 178cm octagonal soft box would be my go to umbrella. I would definitely pick the 105 white umbrella for my interior photography. Solves my problem of less light. Yamini Krishna photography.
this was a nice way to learn about the silver umbrellas, I'm going to try them during a bride or groom prep. thank you!!

It gives me the light coverage I need and the diffuser panel gives me softness when desired
I believe the 105w would be a great choice for me as it’s versatile for shooting half body portraits for family and at weddings and parties as I’m just starting off with my godox collection of products
150cm white reflective with my AD300 for full body portraits, especially outside. As well as fashion and other creative portraits!
165 studio & 130/105 weddings translucent/white umbrella are my fav
I use the 105w on the go and the 165w indoors along with an AD300Pro for fun shots, product and food photography. It's my favorite modifier for all around use and I have no regrets.
Does AD300ЗPro full cover 165 umbrella with standard reflector?
For portraits, white interior 105cm.
