Blackie, i have to say, you know your stuff. I have a a boys axe, collins, its the best i can get around my area. It works well and a great medium axe that can do any task i wish, from heavy to somewhat finer work. tho i also have a fiskars hatchet i take out from time to time. To be honest i use my cold steel kukri most of the time and love it. i live in canada, and to harvest wood i prefer a buck saw or folding saw, then splitting with an axe or the kukri. Thanks for the Axe advice. I have a Cold Steel Hawk now and it's awesome. I also have two axes from my Grandfather which are at least 80 years old. They are very Strong and hold an edge well.
@norgrim67 actually that axe is over 25 yrs old..it is a hudson bay axe head with a diffrent handle from the original..it has been a treasured gift from my mentor for 15yrs now..i find it is the perfect canoe axe and winter axe for my area..big enough to split firewood and fell small trees..yet light enough for straped to the pack duty..i would recomend the hudson bay type of axe..especially in this size range ..safe journeys
Pretty much all hudson bay axe heads are 1 3/4 lbs, which makes it a light boys axe. There are a lot of other axes with that same handle length in the 2.25 to 2.5 pound range.
@Mpanatton03..i chose the trail hawk for lightness..the pipe hawk is a very fine piece of gear,,were i to do it over again i would go with a pipe hawk..thanks for the comment safe journeys
I prefer the Tomahawk. Because it can used as so many other tools with little effort. Axe, awl, knife, pick, hammer, shovel, etc... Depends on the hawk design of course.
Say Heah Blackie, Yeah, My next Axe will be a 15"-26" what you call a Canoe axe. I do have one now, it's a Estwing which I have in three sizes plus the Double Bit Hatchet which is my go to instead of the Sportsman Hatchet which did serve me well over the years, But I like going on extended trip since I don't work anymore. I still like to go out and have my Afternoon Delights, I take my Haversack with the 5 C's and I go Lite with my Trio Cutting Tools a Mora 2000 a Mora Hatchet and the Bacho Laplander. That hatchet replaces me taking a heavier chopper like a large knife although I can add a Bokor Plus Vox Black Rold to the mix if needed and the set will still match. I also could match my Victorninox Delemont Collection Ranger Grip 78 because the pouch I carry it matches the Olive Green. But If I go out to nature see, or to scout a new area, I might take one of my medium size knives and my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet or my WarBeast Tomahawk Lite but good choppers, that Double Bit Hatchet looks like a toy but it's not, But we all know weiggt matters in a chopper. In colder weather I might up to my Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor range Hatchet or even my Small Forest Axe if I need to process more wood to stay warm I even will take my Bob's Buck Saw where normally I take my Combo Wicked Tough Saw. You give great advice to newbe to get them started, get what you can affird because you might not like it..I didn't just one day buy all of these, But they accumalated over the years and I do take good care of my gear. I'm surprised you didn't show any Estwing's I'm really liking my new Estwing Double Bit Hatchet as my knock-a-round hatchet, it has enough weight but not too heavy and I can chip with one side and split with the other side and it's reasonably priced
love your videos - but the handle on your "hudson bay axe" DOES need to be replaced! see @ 2:47 - OR is just the resolution of your video that makes the handle appear to "settle" about two inches lower when you release it?

It's very thin, But the weight behind it split's like a dream, Also the weight behind it felling is done in short order, It chop's. I harness carry it so it's managable that way, Belt carry it would be too heavy. But I really like my 1 3/4+ lbs. Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor Hatchet. Infact it's my Fav. Bush Craft Hatchet and I have a G. B. Small Forest Axe that I can carry it the same way as my Agdor, I have a axe holster Eugene makes, He's on UA-cam just look up axe holster's. But I like a heavier head on a compact handle. Proportion the head and handle, With the right combination you have a nice cimpact hatchet that makes short work out of processing firework, Plus.,,.

Using an axe for a wedge will ultimately open the eye and loosen the head. Why waste a good tool, when a wooden glut will do a better job, madecwt the site?
Say Heah Blackie, Heavier cutting tools do the job faster, by increasing the weight of a axe head, and keeping the handle at 19" would there be any advantage, lets say the head weighing at 2 3/4lb. as a all purpose camp axe, that can be carried easier than a long handle?

Blackie we need a tutorial from you on tomahawk techniques. Here in Florida I usually use a machete but would like to learn more about the hawk.
