  • Romantic Love: A Spiritual Perspective
🔸The difference between unhealthy, healthy, and holy relationships
🔸The formula for creating healthy or holy relationships?
🔸Is it possible to share love and romance while on the spiritual path?
Romantic relationships can ultimately reflect the love of God beneath them. From a spiritual perspective, our goal is to get that love to come forward to fullest capacity. Relationships and partnerships, whether its family or partner, any relationship, is beautiful in its own sense. However, let's now break it down a little bit.
So we'll talk about the three levels of romantic love. And this all applies to any relationship, there's unhealthy, healthy, and holy.
You might be shocked, but I would include puppy love in the shallow category. It's like, "I love you. I love you. I love you." But it's just really still shallow. It's like what you could call infantile stage. It's just this puppy love, and you're not a puppy. It's a little bit needy.
In the shallow category, there is also full-on codependent, abusive love.
In a healthy relationship there's more interdependence, there's more clarity. From a spiritual standpoint, romantic love can be beautiful, but it's got to become healthier, which means I'm going to need to know more about myself. It means I'm going to have to be interested in you. If I think I find myself not really interested in my partner, the relationship gets dull. I'm just there. For me. That's very selfish, potentially even narcissistic.
I'm in a relationship with you, and we have a child called the relationship, think of it like that, you need to feed the child, you need to take care of the child, you need to nurture it, you need to protect it right? A child, your child, or it's not just the children, you have probably more important even than you having children in that romantic relationship is that you have a healthy relationship because that will help produce healthier children. Should you choose to have children, but when if people could recognize that, that the relationship is their baby, it changes things because it's no longer I am here, you're here. And you and I might have kids, it's kind of like, we have one are we taking care of it.
There's a third category of relationship - holy. Holy doesn't mean that we both wear white and only speak in a whispery voice. It's not like some, pseudo-spiritual experience. You can't have a holy relationship just because it sounds neat. You don't get a frame and put the words holy relationship and put your pictures in it. And assume that does it,
First and foremost, you have to actually ask spirit for your relationship to be commended into or surrendered into a holding state. That doesn't mean things are going to be perfect and holy from then on. It means you're ramping up your relationship from one level to the highest on earth. And that means on one level I know unhealthy love, another healthier love, and this is the healthiest love. Another way of saying it is conditional love, unconditional love.
In whatever we experience, I know how to be responsible and look within myself. I don't lean towards projecting onto you. And if I do, I try to catch it as soon as possible and practice forgiveness. It's not just about getting along better, therefore eventually becoming holy. It's like saying, no matter how crappy our relationship is, I can surrender it to spirit and ask to see you, a dysfunctional partner, as as a holy being. And then there's a vibe that happens, a shift. You've had a holy instant, as A Course in Miracles call it.

It's been so hard to find someone who has these same ethics for a healthy relationship! I'm trying to start a friendship first and have good times with and really get to know each other. I'm guilty of jumping into bed too fast and it's just not worth it. Also, I love your sword! Someday I'll find both!

I appreciate the invitation to strive to make ALL relationships holy.
    Maybe especially the abusive ones.
Rise-up and be so self-respecting and real that dishonour has no place.
I am not of Jewish faith, but was moved to observe Yom Kippur this last week.
One result of my practising this was a powerful shift in my commitment to speak up and clean-up
with both a close family member and with money and work. It feels good and true.
Thank you for your thoughts on this subject.
Oh yes, another note: I feel our society is so couple-centric and there is so much new age material on mating. So many businesses based on dating, partnership. Even the inn I worked at last year; its clientele were 90% husband-wife. It can lead a single person to
believe they are terribly f'd-up being 'alone'. It takes great self-love and courage to be well with being single in this world and to be open to all relations being holy and pure.
    Keep up!

Thank you Michael for this video. It's amazing how you put my thoughts and feelings into words so accurately. Unfortunately I went thru a few unhealthy relationships where you start to question why people want a relationship at all. I learned from it and won't settle for anything less then whole and deeply connected on a soul level anymore.

Nice sword in the background! It's your sword of truth that cuts to the heart of things :)
To add to the difficulty, a lot of the (bad) conditioning we've had about romantic relationships has come through Hollywood and has probably been misleading on purpose. It doesn't help that the body is wired to want to find someone to be with, but I see why the challenge is there as an opportunity for growth and transcendence. In my 'angry little me' moments, I get annoyed with that; it's like everything is stacked against us; everything is made extra difficult to teach us lessons and that we're just experience slaves stuck on the wheel. But the soul probably welcomes all the difficulty as a fast track to the end goal. It ain't easy, being human.

I'd like to consider that spiritually we don't need the same things as the ego, but we incarnate with soul groups to have relationships that help us evolve and develop on the soul level, so we do need relationships. Just not in the kind of human ego way we think we do sometimes. Those relationships are the only way we learn to develop a divine and unconditional love, because we can experience love on all the other negative side of that spectrum and all of the spectrum of love in between. Whether it be a total absence of Love, to puppy love, to divine unconditional love. If we don't have another Soul with which to have relationships and learn about those things by experiencing all of the depth of dynamics that can be expressed in the physical body through the ego or through the divine nature of our self, then we don't have the experience with which to truly understand what that unconditional love really is. We have no comparison unless we are actively learning to live love in its various modes of expression.
I don't feel like this is what Michael was suggesting, but it just reminded me of this... I think it is erroneous for any spiritual teacher to suggest we simply don't need relationships. It's not true. It is true that we don't need relationships to be whole and healthy. But 60%+ of Our Lives is spent in various types of relationships learning how to love and express our divine nature regardless of what type of relationship we have. Whether it's with an enemy or a friend or a family member or a romance interest. Or whether it is a co-worker or a boss or whether we are the boss. Relationships are one of the most important aspects of our Spiritual Development that assist us on our way. They help trigger us, heal us, and bring out all of the modes of expression and thought and feeling inside of us. They help to bring out circumstances with which we involve ourselves in, and evolve through. Those relationships also become greatly linked to our Karma.
On the soul, our karma and darma is linked to other people through various life times. Not because we lived alone, never being in contact with others. I think the erroneous line of thought is that to be spiritual you have to be okay not having relationships and being alone. There may be a kernel of Truth on a certain level to that because relationships do not make us whole.. it is up to US, that we have to learn enough about ourselves and who we are at the soul level, so that we can remain in that divine state of being (true to oneself) regardless of what relationship we are in, and in that way our relationships are healthy while we are healthy.... but we also are here specifically to shine God's light in this world, and if there was no one to shine that light upon, in order to become a blessing to others, then we have no reason to be here at all. Without that interaction it gives us limited avenues to express Gods love in this world.
I think one of the worst things a person can do as a spiritual person, is to isolate themselves for too long. Like monks in the mountain or pillar monks, totally separating from society and other people and never having contact with others, living like a hermit. Because as a spiritual person or a spiritual teacher we are here to be an example, not to isolate ourselves. Isolation does not equal spiritual. We're here to be involved in blessing the lives of others, just like Jesus put himself amongst the masses of people speaking to them daily and ministering to them daily. Even on the Sabbath day of Sunday!. When he did go off in the wilderness to isolate himself to face his own demons or for being in prayer, it was only temporarily. For him it was all about relationships you have with people.

Hey, you really made a strong point and I like so much what you said. I have a question for you and I hope you answer:)
What about certain type of men attracting. My father was unfaithful to my mom and always came irregular to our house. So far I have no real success in romantic relationships. Recently I fell hard for someone who had similair traits to my dad. Not very commited and so on. Do I stay with a person like this in order to start turning things around, and learn about my childhhood issues or do I walk away as fast as I can and try to find a man that is anything but like my dad. Is it even possible to fall in love with them? What is the purpose in all of that? What is there to learn??

    • @cafesparrow28
      @cafesparrow28 5 років тому +1

@@dianaoolivia I think you have to ask yourself the questions that Michael presented above. Why do you want a relationship, is there something negative or selfish triggered within you that makes you stay in these relationships? What is the relationship that YOU want, your soul, not what filter you have on because of what happened to you in the past with your father, but what do you think is the relationship that God wants for you, for everyone? I understand it's easier said then done, especially when our egos are concerned and we really want something to work, but deep down I think you know what you want. Good luck. :)

I had to experience extreme contrasts and lose everything to dive into self work (shadow work) about love and relationships. It took me 10 years to transcend every corners of this trauma into first unconditional self love by taking full responsibility of my well-being. The second part, very important, was to stop beating myself (auto sabotage). I wanted to understand fully. So I search, search, invite the observer (my higher self) to assist me to turn this into gold. And 3 years ago, every piece came together within 48 hours. I wrote a book on creative communication (mostly inspired by the work of Marshall Rosenberg on non-violent communication) and creating playful tools for kids, to understand this instead having to suffer to learn. Please, if you are reading this, be aware that mostly all of us didn’t learn how to communicate in a healthy way. We did learn to react and fit in. Not to learn about ourself (observe, feel, express and ask in a healthy way) and stand out with love, compassion and… discernement. And there is no good and no bad in this. It’s just a progress indicator. As Einstein said, we cannot find a solution in the same state of consciousness. Please be kind. English is not my language. But I really enjoy practicing it and share this with you. Thank you. I really enjoy the way you teach. And yes, I think that serious work, or holy work, can be done with joy and fun if we choose it. ❤️🌻

We have to apologize to and forgive _ourself_ once we realize thar staying in an unholy relationship. Your statement that we stress our organs by staying in a (literally) unhealthy union. Forgiveness opens the door to healing, in self & between others. If I now feed, love, & honor my thyroid, it will heal. Too late for my gall bladder: I never "had the gall" in 27 years to say "I quit: ¡Vaya con Diós!" to my husband (Go with God) so my gall bladder literally filled up with pus and stones and __it__ said "I quit!"
I felt very peaceful and whole when my spirit accepted my apology. (Another proof that though things may eventually work out OK, it's _NOT_ "all good"!!!)

Love is inseparable from us, it is part of our eternal spiritual nature. For us to be successful in life and to experience true love, we need to know who we are. Love is our essence. We need to experience love. This is why we are always looking for it if we don't experience it.
When we are in the spiritual world, we always experience pure love. The spiritual world is our natural environment, our real home. When the spirit soul comes to the material world and takes on a material body, the soul is also covered by different layers of material energy. These layers are what a person often considers as themselves. We are covered by a mental body which is largely comprised on the mind. The mind is also material energy. When we are becoming covered by material consciousness, material desires, this is when our love becomes impure and turns into lust. The more self-centered a person is, the more lust dominates their life. When love shines through the medium of our false ego, it comes out on the other side as lust. Love is about giving pleasure to the one I love, about caring, sacrificing, wanting to see the other person happy. Then I am happy. Lust is about getting, thinking about myself. I am the center. Being in the center of all I survey is not my natural position. This is why a person will not experience real lasting spiritual happiness no matter how much they may get materially.

What if they say the love is not deep enough bc the bread winner would not pay for her bills? I could see how he would after a year or longer really if she needed help, but what if she was drinking too much alcohol and being to picky with finding a job? Then she tells her partner you don't love me deep enough?

This is hard to discuss because every situation is a bit different. However, in general, all forms of relationships should do their best to discuss the parameters of who will do what (such as being a financial support) AND then stick to those agreements for as long as they can without harming themselves or the others. But, if anyone feels they have reached their limit, they should communicate that and possibly a timeline for how long they can continue. Any attempts from the other person to cause guilt needs to be seen for what it is and that other person should be told that if the guilting continues, then the contract/agreement will end sooner--sometimes immediately. ~MM
