I have one of these. It is a real step up for Bachmann. On top of that NO traction tires! Thank you for showing this off, more people should know about it.
I didn’t expect this to be such a great model, glad I was wrong. The sound decoder makes this thing amazing in comparison to more expensive brands. We often forget that these less costly models are essentially a blank canvas for the modeler to improve with detail parts to his/her desire which was the norm 25-35 years ago. Great job on the chase scenes, this allowed me to see in detail how the rods behaved. Thanks for taking time to make and post this for us.
Yeah regarding a Bachman. I just got the 2-8-8-4 and I’m impressed as it was my first Bachman. I will get the Hudson now it’s beautiful. I appreciated the video to watch her run. I’m stoked you have one for yourself.
I have one of those, locomotive 5438, and it works really good. I have been very happy with its performance and power. It can pull a good amount of passenger cars, and all while looking and sounding impressive. It’s actually my fastest and strongest locomotive in my fleet, outpulling even my Broadway Limited USRA pacific number 1525.
It’s BLI that should be shaking in their boots. Their Hudsons were the crème of the crop, now these pop up and Bachmann’s making the Dreyfus on top of that. Only one BLI will have proper claim to now is the Commodore Vanderbilt.
BLI still has the J1e's and a quieter drivetrain locked down. They have enough projects in the pipeline, one hudson joining the fray won't hurt them much.
It looks like the engine and tender need more weights to keep traction. So there is no bumming up and down. Overall it’s a great loco I would prefer a better light at the front. I might have to get one myself
The engine weighs more than the Vanderbilt hudson in opening, and is running over non-level track. Factory headlight LED is plenty bright out of the box.
@@SCL3618 it might be a TCS only header. I was looking at using a TSU-BH-2 which is meant for Bachmann steam engines. I’ll decide that when I get the engine and look at it.
Very impressive NYC j3a Hudson locomotive model from Bachmann, these Hudson type engines were an impressive design for passenger service and the NYC was the first railroad to purchase a Hudson type locomotive. This Bachmann j3a engine has a similar appearance to the Broadway limited class j1e Hudson engines, I wonder which engine has more weight the Bachmann model or the BLI model. I would love to see BLI produce a new release of the j1e Hudson engines again in the future at some point, great locomotive & passenger train consist- Tom.
The Bachmann hands down weighs more than the BLI. I've got one of the Paragon 1 era J1's, still a good engine but definently could use a refresh. Hopefully more cars will come on the market, it took a while to get a suitable train built for this. Thanks for watching!
I've been wanting one of these for a long time, but I run Atlas code 100 with #4 turnouts, and 18 inch radius. All of which work well with my BLI locomotives, but I'm not too sure how well this one would respond. It looks like it is very demanding of high quality track. That looks like a very nice layout.
The train is a little bit of a mixed bag- The grey cars are Branchline kits, most of the consist is recent Bachmann cars, along with Rivarossi + Athearn Bluebox thrown in. With any luck there will be more NYC/regular pullman cars to choose from on the market soon.
This has helped a lot! I recently bought a BLI Commodore Vanderbilt. I'm planning to get those green Bachmann Pullman coaches plus some Walthers Mainline NYC Pullman coaches with the gray and white stripe scheme color. I think it should work and look nice. 😊
What brand are the green passenger cars? They look really nice, as does your layout! Considering grabbing this to go alongside my 20th Century Limited and Empire State Express from MTH
The consist is a mix of heavyweights from Bachmann, Rivarossi and Athearn Bluebox. Took a while to find them, but I've got a feeling we'll see more generic/NYC heavyweights in the near future.
I just got mine, engine wobbles like crazy and the speaker is obviously clipping/distorted at even stock volume. Have you had either of these issues ? Maybe I got a bad one
I'd see about replacing it via your dealer or with Bachmann, mine has done fine thankfully since the video was made. Still a gracious plenty on the market, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting it swapped out.
It is a shame we couldnt see it running at ss 1. Any locomotive will run ok, at speed, but at slow speed, sorts the "men from the boys".It is a nice looking loco, but does it have the slow speed, to match.?I have a few Bachman locos, of varousages, & they all do well, especially, if they have a good decoder, in them.
That goes out the window a bit when the model in question is a mid-high speed prototype. Slow speed crawling is burning footage when people want to see it tracking at speed instead of barely moving like in most overviews. Engine runs fine on the low end, but it doesn't need as fine of a slow speed compared to yard power. The TCS decoders can be adjusted for plenty of low end momentum, but speed table out of the box is aimed at hustling out.
@jasonanderson6583 It will manage decently, but I never tested it on heavy grades. The layout has several sections where grade will work against it due to floor, engine managed fine.
Very nice video footage on a nice layout ! But I'm not impressed by the sound and staring performance of this engine. The breaking sequence to stop is not very realistic either. But maybe you are still fine tuning this locomotive ? Thanks for sharing & Success.
Momentum on the decoder can be adjusted, out of the box it's aimed at being a faster responding all arounder, which was greatly appreciated in filming. Momentum can easily be adjusted to slow down acceleration and stopping, though I prefer the default setup for running and creating content.
Bachmann doesn't have a fan driven smoke unit, nor the decoder to support one running in both DC/DCC. I'd leave that department to Broadway Limited and save a few bucks with the Bachmann.

Thanks for watching! They really did a nice job on this, was nice to see an engine that can play ball with the rest of the offerings out there.
Wow, they've come a long way, I see! I'm surprised, I know it's not a brass showstopper but still for Bachmann, that's great!
Honestly a better value out of the box than most brass! No extra work needed with converting it over for Sound/DCC, or dealing with the drivetrain.

I love this Hudson! The passenger set behind it is aa beauty! The way it speeds along is a dream come true!
Easily Bachmann’s best steam locomotive they’ve ever produced. Really grinding my teeth over selling my Central stuff… XD
I can't say I would call it their best ever just yet, but it's one big step up from what we've gotten used to.
Those rock cliffs are perfectly imposing.

Perfect steam locomotives for passenger train. Bachmann is good, Athern is very good.😊
No smoke?
Interesting bachmann don’t usually do well motor wise so I guess this was an upgrade
Haven't had many issues with my other Bachmann steam, motors have always done fine.
@@SCL3618yeah they certainly have progressed through the years I didn’t think you had any problems with your other ones

At 4:47 coupler height issue, or what?
Track hump + coupler slipping up on the combination car.
lol it was going so fast when it hit that hump it Uncoupled lol nice vid
It gave me more than enough footage to fill a segment in the next fail video..lol. Thanks for watching!
Great model! That looks really nice. I’m not a huge NYC guy, but i think i’m interested.. haha
Worth it so far!
Very incredible and awesome Express train 🚂🚂
Yeah this thing seems to run like a Swiss watch. I’m definitely investing into one but might do a sound swap with o match it to my other Hudsons.
Tender has the 21 pin motherboard, as long as pin height matches you should be able to swap around.

Code 100 would be just fine, but you'd likely need 22 for it to be comfortable. That said, it may be able to squeeze 18 on anything but S curves.
Why can't anyone make a realistic wig wag signal? Not like that silly looking toy one Lionel has made for decades.
Leave it to Bachmann to make one!
New York central Hudson Empire state express... Do you have This train ???
No, the ESE Dreyfuss has only been made in Brass and by MTH in HO so far...Very pricey set to pick up on the used market.
That sounds awesome! Whats the minimum track curve radius required to run this locomotive?
22 I'd say would be the most comfortable, but it may be able to squeeze 18.
@@SCL3618OK thanks
I was able to get it to run on 18 inch radius curves. It actually runs quite well.

I think it's great the way it is. Gotta have smoke for me to want it!
I’m pretty picky on what I buy in this hobby and this man did a great job with the sound.
Did i see a smoke unit? Coulda sworn i seen smoke.
BLI Vanderbilt was parked beside it in opening with smoke on.
It was from BLI, the best with smoking steamers as far as I know.
I wonder how good it is for freight service
These coaches have more rolling resistance than a freight if you balance the cars out right, likely will do just fine.
It can definitely handle a fast freight consist.
Can you do a review
Coming later this week. Reviews don't do as well, so I'd rather invest my time in a running video first.

Diecast engine, plastic tender shell over metal base.

Under 300 with shipping.
