This video shows how to replace the exhaust manifold on a 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ 6 cyl. This process applies to Jeep Wrangler 4L from 1991-1999. There may be subtle differences, but the overall process is similar.
I cover all the steps from beginning to wrapping it up. Removal of Jeep power steering pump, vacuum hoses, throttle bracket, intake manifold and the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for watching JeepSolid. I am not a certified mechanic, just a hobbyist who enjoys working on Jeeps - Авто та транспорт
So... just finished doing mine, using THIS video as my guide. Before I started I was semi-terrified to tackle this, but after watching this video several times and then following along as we worked, it was actually not nearly as difficult as we thought! Just took it to the check station and passed emissions, I couldn’t have done this without your video, thank you very much!
Great! I'm glad they helped you out! Just 1 step at a time and it's not too tough.
Sadly my manifold has tons of holes in it. Replacing it once again. Perhaps that “flex” version isn’t as good? I bought a different style this time. We’ll see if it lasts!
Just wanted to say thanks for the detailed instructional video. I have a 92 Cherokee with the same engine and same problem. this has been a great help for my son and I trying to get his car ready to take away to college.
Great idea on putting the bolts in the bottom first. The bottom bolts are a difficult step in the process. Thanks!
Your videos have really helped me. I feel like I could really rebuild my 4.0 when the time comes. You are the best. Thank you and always enjoy your videos
Thank you! I appreciate it.
Thanks so much for this video. I followed your steps and changed this out myself with no trouble!
Awesome! I'm glad it helped you out.
This video just saved me a ton of money.
The one extra step I took was removing the fuel rail and injectors because I found it very difficult to find room to turn a ratchet on the top bolts. This made the job a lot easier, just had to learn that I had to grease the injectors to get them back in easily without leaking (as they did on my first try).
Another small tip I might add is the reverse of your tip about setting up the bottom manifold bolts up to lay the intake manifold on when reinstalling. Since it's tough to get to those bottom bolts when removing them and easy to drop, just loosen them a few turns at first. Then when the top bolts are off the you can lift off the intake manifold and then the bottom bolts are exposed and you can finish removing them.
Thanks so much for making this video.
Great tips. Thank you! Glad the video helped you save some $$
Speaking of injectors, the ones I've got are the original I think, over 20 years old at this point. Not sure it's worth springing for a brand new set but I've seen those sets of refurbished Bosh 4-hole injectors that supposedly better atomize the injected fuel. Do you have any experience of these? $160 new but $60 for a refurbished set.
Thanks for this video, it helped me a lot. I couldn’t get my fuel line off, I guess the clip is just stuck so I took the fuel rail off and zip tied it out of the way. Another thing, I found the easiest way to get at the manifold bolts on the bottom was to crawl underneath the Jeep and use and extension on the ratchet. I also didn’t torque the bolts properly and had a huge vacuum leak so it idled way to high. Lesson learned. Hope this comment helps other jeepers
I'm so glad you made this video. I have the exact same crack in my manifold. I'm a bit of a novice, but I think I'll try this.
first time watching one of your videos. Really enjoyed it, informative and entertaining. 2 thumbs up!
Love your videos bud. Thanks for all the good advice. I use the egg cartons all the time now.
I wanted to point out. The bottom 4 bolts can be seen and reached real easy if you lay under the jeep. 🤙
Thanks again for another thorough video.
+3hdninja You're welcome!
Wow this is exactly what issue I have on my Jeep wrangler right now, Same crack and everything this is a very great video and I feel I could do it but this seems a little advanced but you make it seem so easy. Awesome Video!
Hey! Thanks. You can do it. It’s really not that hard. Just take your time, don’t rush it. Be meticulous with noting how things come apart and go back together. You may run into some issues, but that’s how you learn. Also, taking pictures as you go along is a good idea.
Just did mine today! Your vid helped a lot bro! Thanks so much!
Awesome! Glad it helped you out.
Question? I replaced my serpentine belt while doing this upgrade and cannot seem to get it to stop chirping....I replaced idler pulley for hell of it too just in case bearing was going. I cannot seem to get the right tension on this belt...any ideas. So I have to loosen the entire power steering pump before adjusting tensioner bolt?
Thanks dale! Keep up the good videos!
I know this is from years ago but thanks so much! I'm curious though - no RTV for the gaskets?
great job!
So funny that also on the other side of the world the Jeep problems are the same with rusty bolts and hard to reach places :)
Here it´s the same, greetings from germany!
+Sandmann-Offroad Haha.. That's awesome! Would love to get a picture of your vehicle in Germany! If you'd like, send one to JeepSolid Facebook page, or email dale@jeepsolid.com.
I´ll send you some via email !
Good video and description thank you for your time
Glad it helped ya out!
another great video keep them coming
Thanks! Appreciate it!!
You are the beast sank you I learning a lot like yj my Laky
Thanks for the video helped me out a lot
Glad it helped!
good tips, thanks for the great video!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!!
Ik your video is a couple years old and I was just wondering: I’m about to do all this for my 94 yj and the reviews from the one you purchased said that people were having immense trouble getting it to fit properly Bc of the 1st and 6th header butting up against the manifold its self. Did you have that trouble? Or did putting the bottom bolts in first help get around that issue? I don’t wanna ding the pipes if I don’t have to
Thank you for this tutorial. I am getting ready to do the same thing except my engine is out of the Jeep
Can you provide a link to the high pressure fuel line that you used? I've been searching online and I'm not finding much
Dale, In your engine removal video, I noticed that you took the exhaust and intake manifold off before pulling the engine. Is that necessary? Could I just disconnect the exhaust manifold from the header or exhaust pipe, pull the engine and remove the exhaust and intake manifold once I have it on the engine stand? Thanks for your advice. Bryan
This video helped alot thanks!!!
Awesome! Glad it helped
Great video. I got everything on and but the water pump housing doesn't line up, I ended up snaping the ear off when tightening the bolt.
Dale, one more question. I'm in the process of pulling and replacing the engine on a 1995 YJ 4.0 L. that I just bought. I'm not brave enough to overhaul an engine. There are so many engine remanufacture companies out there, do you have an engine remanufacture company (or two) that you recommend? Thanks again for your help! Bryan
Hey question...after installing the new manifold I’m getting a am from the flange...bolted on with the donut gasket it came with...still have a minor leak...any ideas?
Pretty good vid.
wonderful video thanks a lot !!
+rasec262626 Thanks!
Great video, thank you. G
What exhaust system from the manifold back do you recommend for a good sound on a yj
Darn, I just noticed mine is cracked as well, and the Amazon link is gone. What brand was that ? Great video, Thanks'. Unfortunately the very first Exhaust manifold bolt is gone on my 93, apparently someone tried to remove it and it broke off. So that will end up more involved than I had hoped. Stuck a probe in there and I only get in the thickness of the manifold . Have to figure out how I'll get the remainder removed. Anyway, great help from your video.
My 92 Sahara YJ appreciates your videos...
How about one on R&R of heater blower fan? It's kinda cold in mine now🙄
Thank you! I hope to make a video where I dig into the dash down the road..
Did you need to replace the exhaust flange donut too?
Would you happen to know the the part number to the two fuel hoses?
great video Do you know where I can find the torque specs for a 2.5L 4 cyl? I can only find the pattern
I’d check Jeepforum
Could that manifold fit on a 1990 Jeep Wrangler?
greetings I have a YJ 93..
I have the same problem with a crack on my exhaust manifold I spoke to a mechanic and he's trying to tell me that I do not have to remove the fuel injection or intake manifold just on both and leave rested and then change out the exhaust manifold?????
Thank you for the great video. What is the sensor that is attached to the old manifold. There is a large nut attached to the manifold, but I sensor is broken. I cannot find out what it is. You can see it on your video at 1:42 (Black sensor in a rusted nut. Any help would be appreciated.
I think you're referring to a vacuum hose running from the fuel rail back to the intake manifold?? I posted a few pictures for you on my Patreon account. I hope it provides some help. www.patreon.com/JeepSolid/posts
I wish u would of should how u torqued it down
one thing you forgot to show was how to remove the metal fastener clips from the injector connectors, they are hard to see when covered with grime and someone could just pry away and wreck the connector if they miss the clip. these are the details DIY's need to see.
How long did this job take you? I know it was probably a bit longer because of filming but I’m going to try and do this tomorrow.
Yeah, filming is a killer!! Makes the job take 3 times longer.. ha. But, for the average home mechanic I'd say it's a 1/2 day job. Maybe 4-6 hours start to finish if you're not rushing.
Did you make a before and after on the exhaust note?
That's a good idea! I'll have to do that.
But here's a before and after on the gasket surface ;)

Rebuilding an 88 Sahara 6 cyl. Question regarding manifold gaskets. Do I need to use both I received in the gasket kit? I noticed in your video you only used the one. Is that just due to the different years of our Jeeps?
Not sure what your gasket lookes like, but you should only need 1. As long as there is a gasket between any metal to metal pieces going together where the manifold bolts up.
@@JeepSolid Makes sense....Should be easier to to install the one rather then then two I did last time...thank you for letting me know.
This video is a couple years old so I'll go ahead and ask. Has this manifold held up?
I’d like to know!!
So while attempting this for my second time (first manifold I bought didn't fit right... Go with Dales recommend) I cracked a fuel supply line going to intake manifold... Now I need to replace.... Can't seem to find right connectors and hose... Can you help?
Always seems to be something, huh. I'd start by looking on Rockauto.com for the part.
If you aren't sure the noise comes from the exaust manifold , it makes a good job just to look at it.... However I guess it's a good time to clean that area and replace some parts if needed....
Every time I start my 2001 2.5L Jeep tj, it sounds a bit like a tractor. I can't see any cracks on the manifold, is it possible that it could be leaking where the manifold connects to the down pipe? Is there a gasket or seal there that wears out or gets old? The tractor noise also seems to go away as the engine warms up. Any thoughts?
Nicholas Loomis yes, high possibility. My bronco had a ring that helps seal that union. A sound that goes away as you run it point to an exhaust leak of some kind
@@BroncoSolid what's the best way to clean around the exhaust manifold to monitor for leaks or carbon there?
How did you get the snapped bolt out?
Im wondering the same. I'm about to do the same project on my 98 TJ
Dale, that manifold flange is about a 1/16 inch thinnner than the intake manifold
I have a photo, but don;t know how to post it here
You can post it on my Facebook page. I could look at it there. Mine fits perfectly flush.
I bought a dna header, the gasket with it leaked. Bought a fel pro it leaks, is there another gasket better? They didn’t leak right away it was about a month after installation. Any help would be great.
fel pro is about is good as they get. Anybody else have any ideas? If you keep having problems with that gasket surface and you're getting it nice and clean, I wonder if you have a warped surface... eeek :(
JeepSolid; maybe some copper silicone might help? Or put 2 gaskets together? Hope it’s not the block! I can handle the header being warped. Is the header better with 2 collectors?
My two cents, if you're still experiencing leaks after trying two different gaskets, the problem isn't the gasket. It's the surfaces you're trying to mate. Was it torqued properly? Did you use any sealant when not called for? Just throwing out some ideas.
Can I use that manifold on an 89 Wrangler 4.2?
Check the link I provided in the videos description. It will take you to Amazon, where you can enter your vehicle and check the fit.
Is that header smog legal I’m in California
Should be.
Really good video! One thing: I was pretty worried about all the comments regarding those 4 lower bolts (impossible to reach etc); I did the job yesterday, and had very little difficulty reaching those bolts. Sure, they are not visible, so you need to locate them by feel, but with a 10" extension and a regular 9/16" socket, I was able to remove and reinstall the bolts without any issue, even with a large torque wrench...
That's awesome! Yeah, they aren't too hard. Some people struggle when they can't see them. Thanks for the feedback. I assume you had a cracked manifold? Similar to the crack I had?
Yep. Same exact crack. I had been patching it for months but was never able to make any repair last more than a couple of weeks. Crossing my fingers that the new manifold will not start cracking too quickly!
Forgot to mention in my first comment: the whole job took me 3 1/2 hours (plus an hour to clean up the garage afterwards!)
I HOPE YOU USED #8 BOLTS!
New problem! There must be a vacuum leak, when I start it up it runs wide open on the highest rev!
A great guide for me today... however, if I was to rate this project ( in my today’s experience) I would give this a 5 out of 5 stars for swear words used taking off the manifold.... #$^&*@这么多年都是这样.... hopefully tomorrow’s reassembly is easier.
YJs are known for having cracks in the exhaust manifold
He’s so stingy with the pb blaster haha i really lay it on when i have a stuck bolt
Haha! Yeah. I kinda am..
thats not dirt and debris, thats oil in your air filter. i have the same issue
@14:53 you can see oil stains in your air filter
Yep. Getting some blow back and oil there. Good eye!
my 94 does the exact same thing. haven't figure out the main cause though.
I'm going to be looking into it as well.
I just put an oil catch can in there. Works great
