Being a Gen X'er is really getting sad. Losing so many of the greats from our childhood. *RIP* to Mr. Reubens. Thanks so much for the laughs and the innocent-looking but sharp as razors satire. I’m a late Baby Boomer and I remember Dave’s morning show. Letterman recognized Reuben’s talent and you can see it here where he gives Pee Wee 15 minutes. Pee Wee’s Playhouse was the most original thing you will ever see and his cast including Capt’n Karl and Miss Yvonne were ground breaking and the entire thing took guts and commitment.

I was blown away when I heard that he passed. I had recently just seen some of the scenes from Pee-wee's Big top on cable TV. I found myself totally laughing out loud. It was about a week or so before he died. Pee wee Herman was and will always be one of the best. His scenes with Valeria Golino showed his acting talent and his tender side. I know he had his issues and troubles with the law which showed his vulnerability. Please don't judge him on those sordid details. Rather, just enjoy his character and the way he made you laugh and smile.

A lot of people rag on Pee Wee Herman as silly and not-serious humor. But not only does he have charm, he is taking huge risks in being in being 100% in character in live situations. Jim Carey and Andy Kaufman played with this concept live, but Paul "Pee Wee" Rubens takes it all-the-way by becoming a different persona altogether. That's where transcendence begins---to erase your own identity. Pee Wee is like a Jim Henson Muppet made flesh and bone. This is improve at it's most daring.

THANKS SO MUCH for this. Brilliant guest. Dave is very cool for having him on so many times - from the very beginning. Paul Reubens was a genious and very quick and witty. His character specifically was a that type of character and this appearance shows it perfectly - with his eye rolling and calling Dave out on fireworks being lit at night "duh!" The simple green screen effect was very cool before many people had ever used it. Being an awesome guest in SNL or Letterman or in a comedy club was NO JOKE. He was as good as the best - and really understood humor and timing. And - still does!!! Thanks Paul!!! Thanks David Letterman for getting me through my teen years with the best content on TV.
    - I was fortunate enough to briefly meet Paul back stage at an Oingo Boingo show in Los Angeles - he obviously knew Danny Elfman well - him having done score music for the Tim Burton movies.

To always be in character must be something extraordinary. This was like if Dave had a random nine year old boy on the show. I love moments like when Pee-Wee suddenly turns to the reacting audience and yells "Shut up"; it's one of the things he did regularly on the talk show circuit during the 1980s, and it was always a laugh.
Another great appearance he did was the time he went on Joan Rivers's show and they made fun phone calls. Paul is so funny without a script, just doing what he does as Pee-Wee.

Oh my gosh I freaking LOVE Pee Wee, la la la😂🤣🥰 I first saw him on HBO around 1980 where he had his Pee Wee’s Playhouse stage show. Jambie, Captain Carl, Miss Yvonne (the most beautiful woman in puppet land) and all the hysterical characters. I loved when he would show old footage from educational films from the 50’s and 60’s and narrate them😂. I was about 15 then and my friends and I absolutely loved him!!! Loved his Saturday morning show too. He’s the best!!!
