I met Jimmy Russell last week at the distillery and wanted him to sign the 70th anniversary bottle, but it wasn't there so I got him to sign a Single Barell. Great guy, loves to talk to his fans.
I have heard he is very gracious with his time and loves telling stories. I'm not in a position to get over there and speak with him, but I love the idea of him being there just hanging out with him and his wife talking to people. 89 years old! That's a long life. Hopefully he has more years ahead of him. 🤞🤞🤞
WT 101 is my anyday-everyday. Price here is 22-28. I have a note here says age is 6-8 years. We don't get many special releases (or I just rarely catch them), I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for the input. Cheers.
Something in my head was saying it was 6-8 years, but was not sure. It's the same price here as well. This bottle that I reviewed was purchased at a local non big box store that charges more.
Whenever Rare Breed and Russell's Reserve are available, I have trouble reaching for anything else Wild Turkey. But the 70th Anniversary is tempting...
"Special Anniversary" bottle got me. Even though it's very close to the traditional 101 I think it's worth it. Like I said in the video I found it at Total Wine. I waited a few days and went back and got 2 more bottles. Next year when these are gone (if they disappear) and people are looking for them I will be donating a bottle to Stuff & Whiskey mental health charity event To Write Love On Her Arm. They just had this years event last night and I donated 4 different bottles to support the cause. Cheers!
IMO I think it's worth the extra money. I went back to TW and bought 2 more bottles. One to keep and the other to donate to Stuff & Whiskey charity event next year.
I'd like to try the Wild Turkey 70th Anniversary even without being a huge bourbon fan. Love Rare Breed this new expression sounds interesting!! Awesome video and palette notes Peter!! Cheers!! 🙂
I tend to reach for Rare Breed more than the others, but they are all good. I bought a backup of this one and another to donate to Stuff & Whiskey charity event next year.
I bought 1 and decided that I’d rather have a Rare Breed for $50. At least they didn’t go crazy with the price, but this 8 year just isn’t as special as the delicious 12 year I picked up online. Cheers!
WT 101 is a lovely dram but the Rarebreed is extra special....think the Rarebreed is the second best bourbon ive had, after an elijah craig cask strength. cheers
It feels like something I should get a an extra bottle of. I don't know if he'll be there for a 75th anniversary edition and it isn't that expensive. They could have gone way over-priced on this one. It's good. I'm glad they didn't.
I have read that WT101 is a blend of 6-8 year old bourbon. WT101 was my 2nd bottle, was too hot at first, now, love it, about to buy a 1.75 liter for $39.99. Rare Breed is killer, just bought my 2nd bottle, will but the 70 year as soon as Binny's or Woodman's get's it
I enjoy 101, it’s still my warm up pour before a 2-3 flight from my bar. I picked this up for $79 in Nebraska, friend/owner only got 3 bottles, and I really like it. 101, just better. And, if I could get another this first one would be gone way too quickly. I’m just one old guy who likes bourbon, and I think this was worth the dollars. Glad I have one to enjoy. Now I’ll listen to what 5:50 Peter has to say lol 🙂 Like and subscribe because this channel is excellent and deserves more recognition!
Thank you Mark. I appreciate it. I went back to Total Wine and picked up 2 more bottles. One will be donated to Stuff & Whiskey for next year's fundraiser. The other will be my backup.
Unfortunately I don't. I see it on The Whisky Exchange every now and then. The next time I see it I will buy it. I am curious how it stacks up as well.
I went to the Total Wine in Denver Colorado Friday night and they said they didn't have it when I asked the associate he said that he's had like 10 to 12 people already asking about it . I'm hoping it will come on the shelves here very recently come in the next week or so I really want to try it I'm a big Wild Turkey fan. Also generally I think Wild Turkey 101 is generally around that 6 year age mark. Peter also you sound like you're getting a cold
I have been sick going on 4 weeks now (not covid). I think I am getting better, but it has been a battle. It's all in my chest and makes me sound like I smoke 25 packs of cigarettes a day. I think this bottle is worth it and I hope it hits your area soon. Cheers!
@@jasongowercorrect. I'm a middle school science teacher. I've been teaching for 29 years. I tested for pneumonia. I don't have it. I've had some chest x-rays. I tested for valley fever I'm negative. Everything seems to be good with my lungs. I'm just wondering if I just got a chest cold.
I’ll get a couple if I see it just to have because of what it represents. Is it going to blow you away no it’s just paying homage to Jimmy Russell. I would like to have him sign a bottle that would make it!! WT 101 bourbon and rye are always on my shelf same with rare breed. Just great juice!!
@@whiskeyisajourney I brought back a couple bottles from my last trip since it seems like all the whiskey nerds rave about it. I think it's good, better than standard 101, but not worth LE prices. Very similar to the Evan Williams 12 year which is also a Japanese exclusive. Would MUCH rather have a Russell's Single Barrel.
Did a Turkey 101 blind last week that included the 70th as well as the Japan 12 year. The 12 is much darker overall. Oak and sour funk, char and heavy on the barrel tannin influences. The 70th feels more bright and agile with it's delivery and flavors.

Big wild turkey fan, 101 is good but I truly love Rare Breed and Russells single barrel. Thanks for the review! Hope it comes to Michigan soon.
I hope you see it soon. I guess Texas does not have it either based on a comment from someone else.
I'm with you on hoping it comes to Michigan. I was in Kentucky last week and didn't see it.
Just got it in Michigan yesterday hopefully y’all have the same luck

It’s a good bottle! We were at WT during the release (got a signed bottle from JR!). They said it’s all camp Nelson stuff
WT101 is always in my selection. But for a few bucks more, sounds like I need to try the 70th. Great review, as usual, Peter!
IMO I think it's worth the extra money. I went back to TW and bought 2 more bottles. One to keep and the other to donate to Stuff & Whiskey charity event next year.
Picked one of these up today. The 101 is 6-8 year old whiskey. I'm a turkey fan so I'm looking forward to trying an 8 year old version.
I hope you enjoy it. I certainly have been enjoying mine. Cheers!
Have not seen the 70th yet, but love WT 101. When I add an ice cube to it I get a Heath Bar note.
That Heath Bar note sounds amazing! I hope you see this in your area soon. Cheers!
I get that with Russell's Single Barrels after they get towards the bottom of the bottle. Love that note.
The WT70 just started hitting shelves in CT and I already asked my local store if they are getting it in. Happy it's affordable and good!
I think people will like it. Especially if they are a fan of the 101 because that's what it is...just amped up a little.
My overall whiskey is Wild Turkey 101 but Wild Turkey Rare Breed is my favorite. Haven't tried the Jimmy Russell yet but I will.
Rare Breed is one of the best value bottles out there and it's very good to boot. Hard to beat that bottle. Cheers!
Great stuff, as always!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool ! always LOVE WT101

The WT 12 is fantastic
@jeffl4896 I need to get myself a bottle! Cheers!
Great video!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Have you had a chance to try the anniversary bottle yet?
WT 101 is a lovely dram but the Rarebreed is extra special....think the Rarebreed is the second best bourbon ive had, after an elijah craig cask strength. cheers
If I had a choice of the Rare Breed or the Wild Turkey 101 I'd grab the Rare Breed, but I'd choose the ECBP over the Rare Breed.

It's Thanksgiving in Canada this Monday... and I have no WT in the stable... bad planning, Tony.
That's disappointing. I thought military people were always prepared.
Sometimes we have to semi fail so the bosses have a reference for the successes.
Do you have a bottle of the WT 12 (Japanese bottling) hiding back there? I’d love to know how it stacks up against that.
Unfortunately I don't. I see it on The Whisky Exchange every now and then. The next time I see it I will buy it. I am curious how it stacks up as well.
The WT101 costs less than half in my area. $22!
Same here...I bought this bottle at a local liquor store not a big box store. The local liquor store charges more.

Wild turkey all the way 101 is always in the house rare breed russell's
I'm starting to see why people like Wild Turkey and Russell's so much.
Wonder how it compares to the Wild Turkey 12 year from Japan?

It sounds too similar to 101 at double the price to justify a purchase. Thanks for the review.

Hey Peter - was the SEP giveaway winner announced? I missed it.
Yes. It was Rick Moreland. It was his 2nd time winning. He got it with only 1 entry.
@@whiskeyisajourney Thanks. Congrats to Rick.
Why are you adding water be tasting it?
Water can change the way the whiskey will taste so I add water so I can talk about how it effects it.
You added the water before tasting.
@@aldogomez2681 Now sure what you saw, but I tasted both before adding water.
Unfortunate you have flippers getting Jimmy's signature and asking 4 X the price ...
