I resisted a heated helmet shield for about 20 years because of the hassle with the cord. After riding all day in sleet you learn fast, the cord would be a welcomed and acceptable trade-off. I now have a very good, BRP Oxygen helmet and would never go back to unheated. After awhile, the cord becomes like a seat belt, you deal with it without even noticing or thinking about it. Great videos Dave; you certainly have done a great service for our riders new to the sport. I've been riding for over 30 years and still enjoy your stuff. Never too old to learn more.
@@MyOldSled Great tool in the toolbox when you need it, like those rare occasions when we get sleet. My experience was on a backpack trip traveling from Grand Marais to Duluth, MN. Not fun looking through a clear hole the size of a nickel and I had to struggle to keep that open. It was a perpetual ice storm. Not hard to step up to the plate and get the proper equipment after that fiasco. I did have a good modular helmet, but water does what it's supposed to do in winter; freeze. Keep up the good work!
What I do when my visor fogs up is crack open my shield just a smidge and it usually helps.I also crack it open before we start riding.Yes,it is a little cold but hey it helps !
Thanks for the great video Dave. I cant ride with a breath guard because it makes me feel claustrophobic, I just buy a heated shield for all my helmets and it lets me have the comfort of free breathing without the hassle of fogging. Love your channel!
Thanks DrBobvs...Cute dog. I don't feel claustrophobic, but it is kinda damp...I may get a heated shield yet...thanks very much for watching and commenting.
Excellent explanations and tips. I use a snowmobile helmet with the breath curtain/deflector and double layered shield. Also when I clean my shield, I use anti fog spray - similar to the type you use on hockey visors. Keeping your visor clean is also key to preventing fog and the anti fog spray is safe for our shields and helps with preventing fog. You can use it on goggles too.
I use a "snorkel" - a clear line of medical grade plastic, which runs from my mouth, to outside my jacket. When you got eye glasses contending with goggles, gotta think outside the box, or in this case, outside the jacket.
I won't ride without my heated shield. My life is worth spending the money. Safety first! If my heated shield quit working I would go home. Great ideas! Thank you for passing on your knowledge.
Great video! I find it has alot to do with how heavily youre breathing! If you get stuck or are moving a little bit harder (breathing) it's good to keep the visor cracked or take the helmet completely off (if not riding). Keep up the excellent work!
I found that "Cat Crap" (it's a product you apply to the shield) works pretty good to help. I tried it and after about the 3rd or 4th application my fogging is a lot better. It doesn't totally prevent fogging but it makes it so the shield fogs much slower and clears MUCH faster. I am a believer now.
Oh definitely! I spent I think 250 or 275 on my Ski Doo helmet it's a modular 3. It hurt to spend that much but it's definitely been really nice to have.. crazy thing is I think to get it with an electric shield it was $100-$150.00 more. (USD)
I run FXR snocross style helmet with FXR goggles. I never have a fogging problem until I stop to dig out. The FXR helmets aren't fully sealed with the goggles, there is open space between the goggles and front of the helmet. But the helmet has a tall deflector to get air over the front of your face goggles have nose guard to prevent cold air from reaching your nose. This air gap allows breath to evacuate while moving. I find with powder, thats where I run into problems which it starts coming over the cowl or off the sled infront. Big sprays from other sleds I can tuck my chin and use the visor to block the large snow chunks.
One thing I try to do when I'm in a rough section of trail and getting worked up is to inhale through my nose and exhale out of the mouth. It seems to help in getting the air away from the shield. I use a GMAX modular helmet and I've had almost no issues with fogging or icing. It has an electric shield. I think I've used it twice.
As you know Dave, I have the same modular SKi-Doo helmet that you do so I'm good there, but for the buildup on the outside of the shield, I use the built-in rubber squeegee on my Ski-Doo gloves. It is located on the inside of the index finger of my left glove and can be used just as if you were going to wipe your shield with your finger. I have full leather gloves and I'm not sure if that feature is on all of their gloves now. Great vid Dave.
Thanks PB. I have two pairs of skidoo gloves with that feature, and it's too small to really be useful. I much prefer the small squeegee I made. The one of the gloves is stiffer, so if it's icy it helps.
Yeah. I only seem to have an issue with the icy buildup in certain situations. It doesn't happen too often but when it does it helps a lot. It is a bit small but I can actually use it while I'm riding.
I have found the biggest difference between a motorcycle helmet and a snowmobile helmet is the fabric acrooss the chin to help keep cold from giving you the burn under your chin piece.also a snowmobile helmet usually has a fabric at the back of the helmet to keep snow dust off your neck.lf your patrons here this ,they will hopefully not make the mistake and use a bike helmet.also
I ride EUCs and in the snow my helmet visor fogs up. I see so many videos recommending shaving cream to stop fog. I have applied the cream on several occasions changing up how I do it and it never fails to always fail.
