SHEMP HOWARD - "WHERE THE PEST BEGINS" (1945) CHRISTINE McINTYRE

- Before he rejoined the Three Stooges team in 1947, Shemp Howard had his own solo 2-reeler comedy series at Columbia Pictures. This 1945 release doesn't have much of a story...inventor Tom Kennedy moves next door to 'human horsefly' Shemp, who proceeds to make his life miserable in a series of wacky slapstick encounters. If you like Shemp you'll like this flick, because it's all Shemp from start to finish! He's clearly having a good time here and who wouldn't, getting to work alongside babes like Christine McIntyre and Rebel Randall. I especially like the Jonathan Winters-like vocal sound effects Shemp emits at a couple of points. Produced at the Hugh McCollum unit, directed by Harry Edwards, co-written by Ed Bernds.
I think Shemp Howard is the most underrated funny man of all time. He was hilarious.
ABOUT!😁👍🏻
Loved Curly but when he left it was great that they brought back
Brother Shemp!
Christine was a beautiful woman !!
NOT BAD FROM ANY ANGLE.
"This is my mother-in-law's daughter". So funny.
My favorite line in the whole film.
Hey, mister, let go of my dog! Shemp at his best.
Love this episode with Shemp. He caused more havoc alone, then along side with Moe and Larry. I can't imagine how funny the stooges would've been if it was Moe, Shemp, Curly, and Larry. Or just the three brothers together.
Andrew Martinez, I've thought the same thing for years. What if it was Four Stooges? The best answer I could come up with is it would have been too congested. Curly and Shemp would be competing for attention. Moe and Larry would fade into the background.
They were funny but Larry as as funny.
Christine was incredibly beautiful and a very talented singer and musician but you got to admit shemps wife in this one is pretty nice also I dont know who picked the lady's that stared in all the stooges shorts but the sure had a eye for beautiful women i think women from tthat erea were much more beautiful than the ones we got now
scott coleman not true
Sad to think all these gorgeous women are long gone.
"CHRISTINE MCINTYRE WAS #10 HOT GORGEOUS LADY!!!!"
Dennis Scott And she could sing too!
Shemp knew Christine McIntyre before they were in the 3 Stooges? This is a surprise.
Richard Ranke Of course, a lot of Columbia actors and actresses did projects with each other.
In real life, Shemp probably wouldn't be nears to a dog because he was afraid of dogs and would carry a walking stick for protection from them. Unlike his younger brother, Curly who likes dogs a lot.
those women than were more beautiful, than the actresses or models today. thay were real beauties
Just give Shemp a set full of assorted props to play around with and his flip comments alone about each one of them would make a riotously funny short comedy...I could visualize him picking up an all-purpose tool and saying with his distinctive Brooklynese nasal grunt, "What do ya do with this cockeyed thing? I can't tell whether its comin' or going."...
paul simmons He died at age 60, I can see him in 1965 all elderly guest starring on Bewitched, bumbling through a modern house and being completely confused by state of the art electronics.
@L_O_W_K_E_Y-G Can you imagine Shemp competing with Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde) for laughs?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tom Kennedy would of been dead long before the film ended with that many serious blows to the head. I never saw a Shemp short subject. Interesting, you get the feeling Moe and Larry are gonna appear any minute.
Those were the days, you could make explosives in your basement and nobody cared.
shemp howard was always great for a laugh when in the 3 stooges but now I am discovering some "new " comic material and he is still making new people laugh thanks to you tube and the internet!!!😃😃😃😃😃 . shemp I raise a toast to you where you are now in spirit land. (April 24-2017) time 6:20.59pm.

Director Harry Edwards didn't appear to have any sense of timing or pacing...No wonder the Stooges regarded him as their least favorite director and ended up working with him only twice (on Matri-Phony and Three Little Twirps)...The sole saving grace of this short is Shemp just being himself and all the more funny because of it...
I just can't get enough of Shemp's 'pest persona'! So hilarious!
wow Christine was such a beautiful woman. 😍
Christine McIntyre is pretty, but the actress playing his wife is as pretty or prettier.
That woman played the part of Vernon Dent's "tomato", as he called her, when he played the part of a naval officer in Booby Dupes. And she is in a bathing suit, too. Que up the Shemp "Be, be, be, be, be, be, be" !!
Christine McIntyre actually broke Shemp's nose while filming. It was the Stooges episode where Shemp needs to get married in order in order collect an inheritance (this one was re-done with a slightly different story line...).
The scene where she cracks him after discovering Shemp is not really her cousin Basil, know the one ?...
She actually connected after having missed him the 1st few attempts & the footage wasn't sufficient enough to keep, the director decided. Shemp assured her to come in closer on the punch & the director assured her it'd be fine. She felt terrible and Shemp downplayed it, but yeah, his nose was gushing blood & was in fact broken. Whatever the title of the episode, I forget, there is an entry about this incident on Wikipedia.... wish I could remember for your sake.
Very informative, thanks
Craig Fazekas-Brideless Groom (1947).
One of the few solo Shemp comedies from Columbia that wasn't a remake of a Charley Chase 2-reeler.
Going to the movies back then must've been a total blast.
Tom Kennedy seems an odd choice to play the next door neighbor who invents the explosive. Kennedy usually played dumb heavies. And not much chemistry with Shemp. Vernon Dent would have been great!
I agree, that would have been funnier! :)
Edgar Kennedy would have been funnier too.
@@FelaciaBarrie I'd like to see Shemp go up against Laurel and Hardy.
he pulled a Biden @ 5:35 lol.....
First time seeing this- I didn’t know Shemp did solo shorts. Did he do more?
It should’ve been the four Stooges Moe Larry Curly and Shemp
"WIFE SWAPPING ",,,, ???
Shemp always makes me laugh but this really cracked me up. I love his penguin walk! "Remember how he sizzled when I burnt down his garage?" Thanks for the post!
SHEMP. WZ ALWAYS THE FUNNY ONE HE MADE ME LAUGH. TOOO FUNNY GUY 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
😊
Cool! Never saw this before!
Wait a minute I got it up high enough. 😂
Shemp was all Three Stooges rolled into one. He was the second oldest of the Howard brothers , and was smart enough to be the first one to exit away from Ted Healey, and go on his own. Christine of course was beautiful , however Rebel Randall ( Shemp's wife ) was serious eye candy. The studio tried to play this as a blond against brunette episode. In my eyes , the brunette won. Gosh what a woman. Tall , brunette , and just all around a babe ! The problem with her off screen , is she was married three times and none of her marriages lasted more than one year. A couple of them , only a couple of months. If you read her Bio online , every producer , director , and actor, wanted to " get their hands on her " which they did. Sad story but true. I live in this town and work in it. " Hollywood " can be a great or disastrous place, depending on your perspective or values...
Br A-Shemp was the oldest of the three Howard brothers. Actually, Irving was the first born, but he never entered show biz, and was dead when this short was filmed. Brother Jack was next, but he, too, never entered show biz, selling insurance instead. After Shemp died, there were no more Howard brothers to turn to.
In her last appearance shot the look into the camera after the first 💋 was classic ! Great comedic timing 😀😀😀
i noticed that too !
Sounds like Shemp says, "Ah-shit" just before he falls off the ladder around 15:38.
Shemp doesn't even have to do anything, just looking at him cracks me up
"It could had been woise!" ha ha, gotta love that thick NY accent.
LEGALIZE SHEMP...!!!!!
...os três patetas, foram eles, por muitos momentos de risos meus e de muita gente!!
Shemp was all about 5'6 in shoes.
But taller than Moe and Larry.
Great
2:06 when that hits him on the head...
7:57. Not sure there is a funnier sequence than this. That barrel was put to good use.
That first fall, about 2 minutes in, is the most blatant and obvious stuntman double in the history. It's so obviously not Shemp, and the guy's face is wonderful! What stoogery. Japes!!
snootlyO-The "stuntman double" as you call him, is Johnny Kascier, the man who played the Emir Of Schmow in the 1949 Stooge short Malice In The Palace.
Honestly, a Barrell of dishes!
The only thing missing is "Be, be, be, be, be, be"... Great stuff, thanks for posting it !!
Wow, did not know Shemp had his own "Shorts." Rebel Randall did not apparently do well with marriage. Too bad, very pretty.
There should be a doc. movie behind this man.
Admittedly, growing up, Shemp was #2 behind Curly. But growing up and seeing more raw Shemp and his solo acts, you could see a more comfortable body. Maybe indused to his high level of anxiety and etc.
Not putting negative light at all, but for me personally a more interest in the phychy of his methods.
But without divulging into the deep, this is a lost classic and appreciated.
i always thought… if Burt Lahr would not play the Lion in “Wizard Of Oz”, Shemp wouldve been perfect!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I believe Christine and Shemp just had the best chemistry of all time for the Stooges and for anything they did together.
Such a perfect paring right up there with Fred and Ginger.
He invented sliced bread. Hence, the saying, "This is the best thing since sliced bread."
Everyone should be required to watch this.
Great!
Shemp was by far my favourite stooge.
Christine McIntyre 🥰😍💘
Be be be be be be be be be!
Should have been called "Where the Nudnik Begins," but then most of the audience wouldn't have understood it!
true!😉😉😉😉😉
😂😂😂😂😂
“What’re you wait in’ for, music? Go ahead!”
Ima make that new again 😂😂😂
This is what I call funny when comedy was really king
Shemp had some big shoes to fill and was Incredible !
@ 2:19 It could have been woist!
Horribly unfunny
