This was released in October of 1949 on the ABC network. ABC had only started broadcasting on TV the year before. The series never got past the pilot because of Columbia Pictures who the Stooges were under contract to. Instead of allowing the series to go forward Columbia sold a package of 30 Stooges shorts to ABC instead.
Definitely better in short form but this is a nice nugget of Stooge history. They were in the business for so long, it's fun to see the different things they tried over the years. And Larry is sorely underrated.
@@CrazyChris622 the only reason Shemp came back was because Curly became too sick from his strokes to keep performing... He was only well enough to appear for 20 seconds in a cameo for "Hold that Lion!" It's the only true moment where the 3 Stooges became the 4 Stooges.
IMHO, one of the single funniest things the Three Stooges ever did. I've been watching this pilot since the VHS boots days. Love it! Wish this had been picked up for a series! If it would have, I wonder if Joe Besser would've still joined, had the show still been running by 1955?
That salesman who is selling the pressure cooker he was from Alice in Wonderland as the king of heart Unfortunately that was his last film before he passed away at the age of 51 in 1950
Yup Francis dink trout 😊 was also in a great gildersleeves movie. I personally think he was a great actor. It does make me happy to know someone else researched him
Jerks Of All Trades is certainly a facinating piece of Three Stooges history. It's not surprising that Columbia Pictures kept this from going any further, but overall, I like what we got here. I find everyone transitioned very well to the live format, and this feels right at home with the franchise. One of the big highlights for me is actually the salesman gag, which is really funny. I'm not a big fan of the picture gag though, as it feels so riské for The Three Stooges, although I did enjoy the payoff, which I guess was karma for their lustfulness. Overall, this was a very interesting experiment that I find fits alongside the quality of much of the material released in the same year, that being 1949.
Harry Cohn missed out on a golden opportunity by not allowing this to be made into a series. But then again, in the historical context of the era, most if not all of the major studios avoided television because it threatened their profit windfall. Unlike nowadays when mostly Disney and WB/Discovery control everything in the media. That said, this was a great pilot that had dynamite potential.
Standing next to the frumpy lady (Symona Boniface), you realize how small all the Stooges are. Shemp was the tallest at 5’7”; Larry was 5’4”; and Moe was 5’3”. Curly was 5’5” btw.
Been looking for this one. Had it on a VHS tape that came with their appearance on The Ed Wynn Show and one of their cartoons during the Curly Joe years.
9:09 Clarabelle: I want this room in Robins egg blue. Shemp: Lady we ain't got time to go out robbin' eggs! 9:14 Larry: OH SHUT UP! (smacks Shemp with the culinary arts book which was pretty rare for Larry to slap or hit someone) 😂😂😂😂😂
ANNE: I'm Anne Boonchuy! (TIMBER SPRUCE: Brenda Song!) STAR: I'm Star Butterfly! (TIMBER SPRUCE: Eden Sher!) SASHA: I'm Sasha Waybright! (TIMBER SPRUCE: Anna Akana) Anne Boonchuy as Moe Howard Sasha Waybright as Larry Fine Star Butterfly as Shemp Howard
It sucks that Columbia bullied them out of going through with a series. The Stooges beginning live on stage and ending as a live television show would've seen them coming full circle. Not to mention if it eventually went into syndication/reruns, they'd be able to rest comfortably on the money it would have made them.
Shemp became my favorite Stooge.
Shemp is also my favorite. He was a complete artist, incredible.
Mine too.
But he's no Curly.
@@Patrick-gr9ee Shemp Howard Is Winning Just Like Charlie Sheen
they're all great, but Shemp is by far the most hilarious!

Even live they didn't miss a beat! I started watching The Stooges on TV in the early sixties, and they still crack me up!

It is funny! I would have liked to have seen more in the Shemp era, but unfortunately it didn't.

Larry and also Shemp are underrated.
@@ruth3064 I concur.
Long live Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Shemp Howard (and Curly Howard, who was there with the trio in spirit) 👑
they could've lived long enough to become The Four Stooges
@@CrazyChris622 the only reason Shemp came back was because Curly became too sick from his strokes to keep performing... He was only well enough to appear for 20 seconds in a cameo for "Hold that Lion!" It's the only true moment where the 3 Stooges became the 4 Stooges.
A live performance! What a treat!
Yeah I agree.
I would say this is one of the funniest videos this side of...
*Clap clap clap clap*
Texas!
The skit was also done with Curly-Joe.
“Hey Broccoli Head!” 🤣🤣
I don’t think Moe ever called his partners that until now 😂😂🥦😂😂
Stooges!! We love you guys
It’s Quarterfeather!
Pennyfether!
The Three Stooges are so funny, looney, screwy, and lovable. Their jokes and insults 🤣🤣👍👍💯,
Thank you for posting! Fascinating to see a live version of their routines!
That's the first time I have ever watched the 3 Stooges!🤗😝😘
I’d love to see all the ways they created the sound effects for the shorts. They were perfect.
I have enjoyed watching the 3 stooges on stage in front of the audience even though it doesn't make any sound effects! 😂😂😂👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
R.i.p to all of them
For an audience show, this is actually really good
1:15
Moe: Do you think you can take a letter?
Shemp: I don’t think, I know!
Moe: I don’t think you know either, but go ahead!
😆
Emil Sitka was classic!
Love the Stooges and loved this.
Grew up watching Three Stooges and loved them and still do.

It's really a shame the series never took off. It had a lot of potential.
I like the Texas bit.

My Favorite Stooge Was Moe Because Moe Was The Leader Of The The Stooges And My Hero And Kind Like A Father To Me

He hoarded a lot of the Stooge profits…
Was it Cohn that stopped this? I thought the networks just didn’t pick this up
@@WinkDaMan07 Yes. Cohn shut it down. Threatened Legal Action if they didn't.
My favorite. The funniest scene was when they were pulling Shemp out of a hole in the floor (made from acid) during a prison escape.
Broccoli head? LMAO
“I got that out of my own head!”
“Better put it back before somebody steps on it.”
Love all these guys

And I thought that the Columbia shorts had very low budgets. They look like million dollar blockbusters compared to this.
This is live! Not an edited movie!

Shemp: What are you doing?
Moe: Don't you realize what you're doing?
Larry: What I'm doing?

Moe is my favorite
Too bad this couldn't have been a regular weekly sitcom... I think it would have done quite well in the ratings...
"OH YEAH!!"
Go ahead, bud
How do you do,

I like Larry fine is my favorite stooge
This was absolutely cool, it had a feel of a sitcom in a way, I think if it was a few years later it would have been picked up by one of the networks.
Though I am laughing at jokes that the audience apparently missed cause it's just those awkward silences.

The Stooges' contract with Columbia, as far as I'm concerned.

Clunky, awkward, missed cues, mistimed blows... this would have been a disaster if it had gone to series.

Live TV, The Stooges weren't able to fix any mistakes.
That’s what makes this great.

Easy does it dude…
