      He definitely could have played at RB for the group games and against Slovakia. For a team that relies so much on set pieces and wasted most of them, aside from Walker's long throw, he was missed. My only worry is as we play the better teams now, Trent's defensive ability will come more into question.

    • @phoenix___7747

      @mickbanner I don't think Southgate will change a thing, but my preference would be Trent at right back and Gomez on the left. We need a decent left back, whatever happens, most likely anyway, and Gomez did a good job at Liverpool there. Of course, like everyone else would like to see Gordon at left wing, and Bellingham at 8 with Foden at 10 but I think that is wishful thinking.

      Yep, the Switzerland game will be rinse and repeat by Southgate. The problem is the opposition is better, I can see the Swiss scoring one or two before Southgate realises he needs to make substitutions to change the game. Going by the timing of his substitutions it will be too late and the ship will have sailed. I see England going home after Saturday based on the performance of both teams so far.

      I was worried when Gomez was required to play as LB. Ermmm he ended up being sooo good, Robbo couldn't get back in. Solid defender, pace to burn and great in the air but similar to Shaw he's not naturally left footed so can't see him playing. Tripp hasn't really done much wrong considering he's a RB playing on the left. Southgate will go with the option which is least disruptive. Hence, it will be Tripp, stones, konsa and Walker.

    This is a very strange situation. I've been following England since Bryan Robson scored 27 seconds into the first group match against a superb France in España 82. It seems almost as though Southgate's plan is to see the match out from the opening whistle and that he then expects a Kane or Bellingham goal or two to win it. It's so dull and maddening. Imagine being an England player on the bench and having to sit through it. But they're through to the quarterfinal against Switzerland with a mediocre Netherlands or Turkey (Portugal without the talent) awaiting in the semifinals. It's all so unfortunate. But I'd like to see England make us all suffer all the way to the final. There is so much anguish in the world anyway. Why not this?

    For once England have a lot of technical players, but are stuck with a manager who learned his tactics in the 90s.
    Southgate literally doesn’t know what to do with them so he just picks who he thinks are the best individuals and hopes for the best.

    This is absolute tripe. Mainoo is not a 6. He’s not supposed to be there to allow Rice to go forward. He’s an all round midfielder and is far more creative than Rice will ever be.
    Rice is great at breaking down play and making simple passes. He can do that really well, high up the pitch. He’s very effective and if he plays the 8 needs a proper 6 behind him.
    Fine, but unless Wharton is a genuine 6 then we have to play Rice in the deepest midfield role!! He’s surely the best at that in the squad.
    Mainoo has more creativity and skill in his left nutsack than Rice will ever have . He’s still a good player but every time he tried to do something clever the other night he got it wrong. Unlucky with that great effort against the post but Mainoo is an 8 !

    England should match them up and play three at the back. Walker Stones Konsa.
    Trent right wing back with Saka on the left.
    Mainoo and Rice in midfield with Bellingham just in front, playing behind Kane and Palmer.
    Basically a 3 5 2 or 3 4 3.
    Should help them get the ball into midfield easier, simply by bringing the wide players further back and being available for a shorter pass, as the back line clearly lack the bravery and trust to play the ball into the midfielders feet, and then when they do the midfield are afraid to get on the half turn as they lack options when they do take a risk. 5/6 in midfield should help this.

Then what's the use of him? Better to try Palmer on the left or use Gordon that gives us balance on the left and stretches the defence to give Saka more space on the other side as Spain have. Bad faith by Mr Pearce. KWalker has been having a mare of a tournament in possession, so the only thing he really brings to the table is his pace and defensive recovery. He is the ideal candidate to move across to LB. TAA should be the guy to come to RB and overlap and light up the right side in the right way. It's sickening watching Walker play simple 20 yard passes out of the pitch

    • @graysimmo5399
      @graysimmo5399 26 днів тому

      when does Trent overlap? all he does is drift in to central midfield looking to hit Hollywood passes. That is of no help to Saka whatsoever. Walker has been off form for sure, not offering an attacking outlet, and switching off like he used to earlier in his career. But he still has way more defensive nous than TAA, far more desire to defend, and if all else fails, he has his pace. Walker isnt the perfect solution, but to have a player at Right Back who cant(and doesn't even show any inclination to) defend, is an open invitation to Switzerland. If you are looking for the answers to all England's problems by changing the RB then its a lost cause. The simple answer is just let the players do what they do for their clubs, and stop holding them back. These players who do it week in week out for their clubs haven't become bad players, they are being strangled by Southgate's negative tactics. Rice is too busy sitting in front of Guehi to assert himself. Bellingham is being crowded by Foden and Kane,-whether its Cocu, Davids and Seedorf, or Gerrard, Scholes and Lampard, it doesn't work having players who all want to occupy the same space. And nobody is willing to take anyone on, Southgate, has them so afraid to lose the ball that they just go sideways and backwards

    • @robert_bah
      @robert_bah 26 днів тому

      @graysimmo5399 you're reciting old clichés. Tiki taka has no issues with tight spaces. It's how you use them.
      Walker (unforced) misplaces several 20 yard pass. Saka comes inside to create space for a shot or for the RB to overlap. And exploit. No one needs to play hopeful passes... just precise passes based on the movement created. Having watched Walker in the euro24, can you trust him to deal with a complex pass during his overlap?
      Does he even have the desire to overlap?
      The reason saka is slow whilst he cuts inside is to ensure the ball remains protected, so overlapping RB is not out of position. if there's no movement, what's the point. Its not beyond Saka to run like a headless chicken, but most players from the top 3 teams in the prem play in a scripted way. Walkers at RB is holding England back. Perhaps at LB that pace can come in handy, as we are not losing out on any overlapping on that side.

    • @graysimmo5399
      @graysimmo5399 26 днів тому

      @@robert_bah Foden wants to constantly drift inside, but Walker's lack of overlapping suddenly doesn't become an issue, even though someone doing that is even more crucial on the left than the right. Talk about contradicting yourself?? in other words you just want TAA in regardless

    • @robert_bah
      @robert_bah 26 днів тому

      @graysimmo5399 in a real team you have minor adjustments. Especially to keep gifted players. When iniesta played for 🇪🇸 he at times played on the left ... he hugged the line and was allowed to drift inside. But at least there was overlapping on the right. Foden can play selflessly and hug the line and open up the pitch on the left but even if he doesn't he can come in and form a box midfield so they can probe better ...
      But on the right, we need the width.. and we have TAA or Trippier that can do a better job.

    • @graysimmo5399
      @graysimmo5399 26 днів тому

      @@robert_bah We know Foden wont do that. He has had 4 games to show it. Iniesta was special in that whether he played left, right or central it didn't seem to have any negative effect. But that doesn't answer my question. Why do we need width on the right more than the left? Saka stays quite wide, so there is width there. He could still do with help obviously, but we have none on the left, but mysteriously you don't see that as a problem. It still sounds like the TAA appreciation society to me. The easier fix to the left would be just bring in Gordon
