For a quick recording of a rehearsal or social media video I have 3 mic set up (Sontronic condenser for mono overhead, Audix D6 on the bass drum, and sm57 on the snare) going into audient asp800 > audient id44 For a more advanced session I usually go with 421 on toms, sm57 for both top and bottom snare, sometimes SM7B as a "knee" mic or hihat, Beyerdynamic M160/AKG C414 for rooms and Octava MK012 for overheads in XY
I can't say that I have a go to, but there are some standouts like a Coles 4038 overhead(s), Josephson e22 on snare. I had great luck on a jazz drummer with Soyuz 012 fets on over heads. I love my Phoenix Audio preamps for drums, as well as CAPI VP28s and John Hardy M-2. Theres just so many great chains...

This guy has a hell of a linage and seems so humble; his point is success is opportunity meets preparation. I don’t have a set chain or go-to set up because I’m not that active in recording; I’m leaning more on mixing.
Love the OPX with Dante card, Ive got 8 ins and a headphone out from my home studio control room to any room in my house for tracking and I can take it to go as well. Would be nice if the OPX had output transformers on the preamps for dirtying things up but for clean gain its fantastic.
Gorden greatly inspired and influenced my drumming so I owe him a huge thanks! I remember my jaw dropped to the floor watching his Rhythm Alliance Conga Room performance a good 12 years ago. Loads of phenomenal drummers played on the same card (Chris Coleman, Teddy Campbell, Nick Smith etc) but Gorden's dynamic control, his sense of how to build the songs energy, his musicality, how he pushed and propelled the song forward, his timing (his "micro sense" of where the beat should be), his phrasing and accents... he just stood out to me. Even though usually I'm not a huge fan of these drum event chop fest performances, I became a huge G.C. fan ever since. Seeing in this interview how nice, down to earth and humble he is... what an inspiration, what a legend! (This is his performance I'm talking about. The audio is not so great but still you get a sense of his playing. + The smile on Chris Coleman's face is gold :) ua-cam.com/video/SXQ_zD_BLU0/v-deo.html )
Love these kinds of conversations. Informative and backstories that really give you great perspectives on gear, process and the road of experience getting there! Love him for admitting being a studio geek but economical. Lol 👊🧡👍
Met Gorden at a George Duke gig in The Jazz Cafe, London many years back (he was the drummer) and what a genuine guy and of course a fantastic drummer !
I'm not even a drummer, but this guy is great. I love seeing people that have to build pay check by pay check just like most if us lol. Great player too
One of the most awesome interviews and tours you have done, Warren! I loved every minute from start to finish. Gorden seems so down to earth and knowledgeable about his craft!
My first drum kit, and still in my studio, is the Premier Cabria! One of the last made in England and I love it! Great interview and tour as always, Warren! Cheers!
So cool to see a D.C. and Howard guy on your channel, Warren! I have several friends who went to Howard and who have played Blues Alley. Such a great and historical place.
Awsome drummer! First time I got familiar with him was live with George Duke gig in Stockholm and later with Andrew Gouchet on his jam nights killing it ⭐️🔥🥁
I love watching all your interviews and sessions Warren👏, but as a drummer this was especially awesome😎, and also just goes to prove not everything can be done in a bedroom with loops, experienced players in dedicated pro spaces are still required🤓, I look forward to listening to Gordon’s album👍
I have had many different drum sets over the years but I always come back to Yamaha. I now have two Yamaha kits in my studio. The only other kit that I really liked was my Gretsch.
Strange but true. Miles used my guitar feedback sample that opens the song TUTU . Sampled into an Emulator II Keyboard for a completely different session months prior. That EII disk was shared and copied at an LA EMU sound /disk swap party and somehow made into the TUTU session. No joke
I've been drumming as a session player and in bands since 1989 and could bore your balls off about drum recording and production but you are such a nice guy it somehow doesn't feel right to punish you like that! lol
What is your go-to set up and chain for recording and/or mixing drums? Let me know below!
Addictive Drums!

I'm running 12 mics through the console with a little EQ. For demos usually 4 mics Kick in, snare top, overheads.

So humble. I love how his passion has seemingly been a constant for such a long time. Hope we do see some performance coming up with him soon!
What a great drummer and what a great guy... and what a refreshingly honest, no-bull & no-tech-snobbery attitude.
3 thumbs up!
👍👍👍
Agreed 100%! Thanks ever so much!
Amazing Drummer with a great drum sound!!
Thanks ever so much
Happy to see Gordon using the LCT 640 on tom :)
So are we!
Your mics are really fine!

I don’t have a set chain or go-to set up because I’m not that active in recording; I’m leaning more on mixing.
Thanks ever so much! Yes, wonderful guy and a HUGE talent!
Dynamite interview and tones!
Thanks, Manny! You ROCK!

How about an interview with Erik Zobler, Warren? He's amazing and did some amazing work with George Duke and many others.
His drumming is so tight and consistent
The truth is Gorden could record into a single behringer sm57 clone and it would sound incredible!! Serious player with incredible dynamics and feel!
Wonderful guy and an amazing player!
@@Producelikeapro you're a legend Warren!

Great video! What Mac computer version is Gorden using?
Kali IN8 Not the Kali LP8..I have the LP6 ,The radius of the Hi end is wider on the LP6 AND 8'S. It is rounder on the IN5 AND 8
I spy, with my little eye...
Haha yes, indeed
