As someone who spent a few months (at least) practicing on drums for an hour or two a day, and didn't get very good at it, even though I always liked the drums most in songs on the radio, I'll list Neil Peart, John Bonham, and Mick Tucker as three who got my attention early. Phil Collins and Tony Thompson also rate a mention. If I don't stop wandering down memory lane here, the rest of the list would be longer than the first part of my reply.
All of Steely Dan's Aja drummers line up... (Gadd, Marotta, Purdie (he's so great), Humphrey, Greene - and Keltner, of course for Josie...). And Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison... he's way more than tight and so tasty.... And, of course, the one that I think is the hardest to imitate would be Stewart Copeland... But, you know, so many many more... Of course, my knowledge of Gospel and Soul is limited... Anyway, thanks a lot for that video... Greatly appreciated..... (I'm a keyboard player by the way, would you have guessed? lol!)
classic grooves! I'm very tempted to say praise the Lord! Drums was my first intrument so for me it's always drummer's perspective on the drum mix but it's interesting watching from the other side as Gordon plays and hearing it how he does . . . Great video, thanks Warren!
Oh Warren, seriously? How to make a choice? They´re all so good! But for the insane kick figures: No.2 and No.3! Thanks for this and also: Great playing by Gorden!
Gospel/funk/roots drumming is all about the “grease”. Once you get it you get it. It’s not that hard to play. It’s the getting it thing that’s the rub.😎
Gordon made that look ridiculously easy and I suspect it's not bloody easy at all!!!!! Not for me anyway. Fantastic grooves there. Thanks very much for the great video
Love this video. Observation 1: I wonder if Mr. Campbell is left handed. His hi-hat/snare technique seems to favor is left hand on the hi-hats. Observation 2: Lots of groove have 16ths on the hi-hat. Ob #3: The Brooklyn groove sounds like beginning of Stevie W's Superstition. Sounds like same tempo. Ob #4: no 4 for on the floor for the Lord!!!! Great vid. If you can do a vid on Gospel bass, that would be great. Happy Holidays!
Loved this! Gorden is such an amazing musician ...and the whole plethora of stratospheric drummers and bass players coming out of the black churches is just incredible.
At 4:38 mins, please, 'cmoooon, that's Superstition, Stevie Wonder, right??? And so ironic that to be called "gospel", hehehehe... By the way, I try to be a Creator's servant, but I am all out of those "oh, that's devil's music" stuff because it took some time to understand that "the devil" is the human EGO. So, if a "gospel" musician is there trying to be famous and rich, he can cry and say "Oh Lord I adore You" a thousand times and it will be meaningless... ...and that's the "devil's song" he is singing... Just saying it to avoid any kind of misunderstanding here... Talking about the drummer, WOW. Like the comment from Lee Chapman 20 hours ago, That was exactly what caught my ears. The timbre consistency, the tempo - I was saying loud here "Oh, man, he sounds like a drum machine"... (in the best sense, of course). Simply top-notch.
What are your top drum grooves for ANY genre? Let me know below!
My favorite is Gojira - art of dying
Just about everything Mario does is incredible
