Hey Harli! I'm an occupational therapist and I have my patients water the plants in the gym ALL the time as part of my sessions! Recently, we got told we are no longer allowed to keep plants in the hospital because of the bacteria in the soil. I am looking forward to trying some of these "soil free" plant ideas with my patients!
Love it!!! 🙌🏼 Fellow OT here! ☺️ Just make sure you change the water weekly to avoid algae growth (so water plants doesn’t get booted from whoever you work for) - that can be part of treatment!
How do I prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the water in the pots and vases, apart from by changing the water more frequently please advise, thank you.
Hey Harli! A few months ago I started watching your videos, and now I’ve watched all of them! I’ve seen the growth in your content and as a person, and you’re amazing! Keep doing what you’re doing! ❤️
Since the start of my own plant journey (like as a toddler or whatever) water propagation has always been the most exciting thing you get to do as a plant parent
I recently learned that pothos can grow in a fish tank! Just the roots, so you have to find a way to attach it to the rim of your tank to keep the leaves out. It's good for the pothos and it helps with the fish tank water! Bonus!
I got liquidirt a few months ago because you recommended it and honestly my plants have been thriving!!! probably one of the best things i've done. your videos in general have been a saving grace.
This is the video I have been waiting for! I usually use leca pebbles in my water to help keep the plant in place. And I 100% water plant life is soooo much more manageable!
A tip with bamboo one of mine started to go yellow because of the water in my area.. so when I want to change the water I'll take how much I need the day before to let the chlorine I think it is evaporate (I'm no expert lol) and they've been good so far. I also collect rainwater for my calathea (who hates my tap water 😂) and its been thriving since. Highly recommended collecting rainwater if you can 👌😊
Fluoride in the water kills many plants as well. For my plants in water I use Crystal Geyser or Essentia Water. Our tap water is fluoridated 6 months out of the year. Lake water for 6 months & well/public water 6 months. Most all of my plants despise our tap and fully filtered water is dead water to a plant. It has zero nutrients or minerals. Can literally kill some of my plants in 1-2 days.
Today I heard about a product called "Beta H2O" (I have not used it yet) that is made for fish tanks that takes away chlorine and hard metals from water and prevents burn tips in plants.
I've moved several of my aglaonema into water and they are so happy. Also my domino peace lily and some pothos. I love growing my plants in water. For one thing, no fungus gnats. lol Oh! And I also moved my Philo Silver Sword into water and it's very happy.
Great video idea! I completely agree with you about keeping snake plants in water, its better, I tend to ignore them then roots rot in soil. In my experience, rhaphidophora tetrasperma love to live in water, I had a huge one that hated soil so I split it up and now it's spread all around my house 💚
I have to agree with keeping them in water. But I find if I leave plants too long in water they crash at some point. I’ve never used liquid dirt, I’ll have to save up and get some soon. Thanks for sharing 😎💚
I've always loved alocasia zebrinas but I've killed like 2-3 of them... Then i put this one I have now in water because I was basically desperate, it was starting to yellow and just dying heh. It is AMAZING how well it's done. The roots grow like crazy and it's been putting out beautiful leaves.
I put all of my calatheas and stromanthe in water and they are thriving!! Even having them on a wick system they were finicky. So much better now just growing in water. :)
Hey Harli. I have that lucky bamboo also in water and pebbles. If you want to, you could cut of the new shoots from the main stem (cane?) and root them. I discarded the old roots and stem (cane?). I personally liked the look better without the cut cane showing. I bought it this way and when it got too tall, I chopped it and started again. Love the orange roots! (They start out regular white but turn orange) Love your videos😗!
@@beneiseoleinmheart5614 There’s no need to, I put a couple of pieces of horticultural charcoal and sometimes even let the water almost dry up! It never went slimy or dirty. But if you do see that the water is cloudy definitely try rinsing the roots and changing the water!!
DO you recommend cutting the roots at a certain point? I imagine the roots start getting pretty big espexially in comparison to the size of the plant itself? thank you :)
Thanks for the incredible video Harli, and thank GOD for everything and for your skin health (I sound cruel but you made a video about the products you use for your skin "face mostly") so your face is clean and your skin IMPROVED SO SO MUCH AND IT LOOKS AMAZING NOW, I REALLY WISH IF YOU MADE AN UPDATE VIDEO ABOUT THE PRODUCTS YOU USED TO GET RID OF ACNE, PLZ, HOWEVER THANK YOU ANYWAYS, BYEEE ✌
Could you do a video about keeping plants in just sphagnum moss permanently, please? Everyone mentions it, but I haven't found any (reliable) information or videos about it.
% 100 agree. Can't grow peperomias, killed them all , but I can grow them in water. I'm going to transfer some of my plants in spring. I want to clean them from the soil but have to wait for warm spring days. So far tons of snow outside and still snowing right now 🙁
I need to put new water very frequently sometimes. Mosquito season means as soon as I see wrigglers. It's necessary to wash the roots to be sure all larvae is removed. Pothos and peace lilly do well growing with roots in aquariums too.
Do any of these require low light? I am looking for easy desk plants. My bamboo plants started to get root rot. Why do you think this may have happened? Thanks!!
Helpful, thanks. (Slips away to go yank a syngonium out of dirt that has been steadily failing over the course of the winter like it didn’t during warm months :)
For a couple of months! The peace lily is actually my first one and I skipped right over soil and just decided to keep in water! The pothos is an njoy and it never done well in soil and has already started doing much better since I made the switch :) great video, thank you!
Hi just wanted to know if my leaves are turning yellow on my potho plant that has been growing only in water for over a year what could be causing this problem? Thank you
Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I apologize for the stupid question, but to grow these plants in water do you need to take cuttings or can you wash off the soil of the plant? Or, do you leave partial soil and the rest water? I have propagated pothos, philadendron and monstera in water from cuttings, but am not sure about the rest of the plants... I have a Peperomia that is killin me smalls but am not sure how to transition it to water. Same with the peace lily and sansavera. Sorry, I am a newbie and struggling, so any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!
Okay, so I also love water to keep plants in. I’ve been having issues with syngonium getting super slimy within a day. I’ve used tap water, distilled water, filtered water, and spring water. All with and without liquidirt. Literally the only plant I’ve had this issue with. Any suggestions or similar experience?
I’m not an expert but my educated guess is that there’s a bacteria (a common cause for slime) living on the plant, and therefore switching out the water doesn’t matter because it just spreads again. I’ve used a hydrogen peroxide solution to “sterilise” the soil of some of my plants, and I wonder if you could use that to sterilise plants in water too, might do the trick!

Using perlite instead of spagnum with Liquidirt, works well for me
The perlite is inert, so it just functions to keep the cuttings in place upright, with the nodes in water/Liquidirt
