One of my good friends, and the guy who introduced me to Commander (thanks my dude!) told me that lands are probably one of the biggest traps when budgeting for commander decks. I know everyone wants the best mana base possible, and it is undisputed that having a diversified mana base is really helpful when playing 3+ color decks, but you have to consider the impact that diversified mana production is going to have versus just waiting an extra turn for an ETB tapped land that costs 10 cents. He told me he would rather allocate 40 dollars to big impact cards rather than spend 100+ dollars just so he can have shocks and fetches. Bonus points if you can run a mono color deck with cheap but synergistic cards like Sram, where most of your lands are plains that cost pennies.

Mitch holding his tongue when they are talking about Card Kingdom (their sponsor) and Shit talking TCG Player (his sponsor) at the end there is so much fun to watch. 50:43
Hey! The Plainswalkers thing had me thinking: Has Mitch ever thought of a video series where he tackles an expensive archetype, on an unlimited budget, but as cheap as he can make it?
When Mitch started his channel, I was on vacation with my wife, and she was sick for several days. I was fortunate enough to have his channel in between caring for her. I'm so glad to see him here on Game Knights, and I can't wait to see his future videos!
I started commander 2 years ago while watching command zone and only playin precon. Then the commander quarter came and I started to build some of his deck and arrange it when the budget can. I have like build around 10 deck of mitch. In EU, card are way more cheaper and you can build some for like 15 € ! You both made me into commander and for that I can only say thanks from the deepest of my heart. It's an achievement as a player that u finally met! Much love from France.
One of my favorite decks I built is a budget deck, for like 20$ I built a Uril, the miststalker deck. This was after playing for like a year or so. After playing a few games with him he earned the esteemed title of "Slap Daddy" in my play group. Recently my group is playing stronger and stronger decks so it needs to be optimized a little but it is still fun to play.
I love Mitches budget Muldrotha commander deck, I have it right next to me, but I have upgraded it with cards I have had previously and it plays really well! Thanks Mitch! Hope your channel continues to grow! Great content!
Best tip: Take a commander and a deck strategy that hardly anyone else plays. You will notive, that most of the cards are way cheaper. Also: Build the deck before Command Zone makes an episode about it. Card prices will rise afterwards ^^
My Muldrotha started as a Commanders Quarters deck. My Feather is still pretty much stock from his list with a few of the upgrades. Krikk, which I only built recently, started as a replica of his deck, then I realized how many mono black staples I had laying around. All three are amazingly powerful right now. My fiancee has a Gishath deck that is pretty close to, if not identical to Mitch's list, his Tatyova started as one, but it got a lot of love and upgrades over its lifespan. That Tatyova deck is absolutely terrifying now, but it was still really good right when it started. Mitch's decks are great, I love his content, and I'm so glad you guys did this collab. All the Commander's Quarters decks make for a really good starting point, and they're all really well balanced against eachother. Oh, and good budget cards I don't see very often: Jarad's Orders is a great tutor, and if a deck CAN run Villainous Wealth, it SHOULD probably run Villainous Wealth. It's a bit hard to cast, costing Sultai and X, but I've personally seen it end more games than Expropriate. Partially because of how expensive Expropriate is. You could even hypothetically cast Expropriate off of it, without spending a single cent on the card! So good!
1) I really hope they played a game with Mitch for extra turns, and 2) I love the little smirk from Mitch at the end when they're plugging Card Kingdom (seems like they don't know about the optimize feature lol).
Mitch has such a fantastic personality, and he's so incredibly knowledgeable! Please have him on the show more, this quickly became on of my favorite episodes!
Man I love Mitch’s budget decks. I built niv-mizzet parun, muldrotha, and yuriko from his videos. Those decks rocked and they definitely hold their own. Best $25 I spent at that time for building those commander decks. Thanks Mitch!
So, will you bring any of the cEDH content creators to the show? I would love to see either the Laboratory Maniacs, Spike Feeders, or Playing with Power guys on the show. Even for a few games of Xtra Turns. 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
I mean, I don't think anything is off the table. The only problem is Idk if those guys would be interested. Although, on the other hand, lab maniacs were super hyped to play cedh with that guy from the rules committee
Speaking of Spike Feeders, they would love to play on GK, it just needs to happen at some point they come to the U.S. and play afaik (source: previous discussions on their discord).
My friends are just getting into commander these past two months and they asked some good reference/idea points. I suggested both of your channels. Perfect timing!
I have loved command quarters content, his video on miv mizzet reborn is the core of my deck and he has shown me that I can build strong decks for cheap. I have recently been working on a Torbran burn everybody deck for around 30 dollars. That said it is amazing to see two of my favorite channels work together it feels like the first time I saw Dj or the professor on the show and I love how the community comes and works together
I built budget Yuriko using Mitch's list. I often crush everyone at my playgroup, including the ones that win in 5 turns. Haven't upgraded it yet. I had no idea that my favorite gaming style was available in MTG. Thanks, Mitch!
My first two decks (Nikya and Feather) were built based on Commander's Quarters deck lists. His videos were the first edh content I watched/listened to when I started playing magic earlier this year.
My tip for budget on Auras: Bruna, Light of Alabaster. the Commander itself costs a couple of cents and there are a ton of cheap but powerful Auras in UW.
I had a blast making a strange color combo for Auras. I made an Intet, the Dreamer enchantress deck. I made it as a recommendation to make a deck that uses Witch Hunt. So instead of a crazy wacky red deck, I made an enchantress deck the best I could without going all colored.
It's funny you mention pulling an Urza and building a deck around it, I bought a pack this weekend and thought about that and then sold it and turned it into a pauper deck utilizing the Urza lands. Turned my little pack into a competitive deck! It was pretty cool
Great episode! So incredibly refreshing to hear Mitch talk under 250,000 words per minute. On his channel, he's basically competing with the dude from those old Micro Machines commercials.
My first EDH deck was based from a budget deck of this channel, Reaper King. Even after making other 2 decks, RP EDH remains as my favorite, thank you!
My first deck I built of someone else’s list was Mitch’s Nikya of the Old Ways deck. Love it!!! I’ve made a few changes but it was a great starting point. I’m now looking at his Meren deck list for ideas.
Most of my Commander decks are budget! Aggro strategies have worked really well for me. My Tetsuko Umezawa and Depala, Pilot Exemplar decks cost $50 total but they win a surprising amount of games against some powerful decks at my LGS!
MITCH! I've been waiting for this crossover for so long, great to see content creators branching out more frequently to make great videos. Awesome episode!
Which will then become unbudget just like some of these cards already are, just hours later. Definitely some spikes occurring. It's great to have budget discussions/gameplay but they really need to be careful of their own influence...
Yeah, but that would only work if everyone was playing budget, and how would Josh fit Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers/Vedalken Orrery/Cyclonic Rift/Rhystic Study/revised Duals and other $20+ cards in *every single non-precon/draft deck he ever plays?*
Random singing, random singing, beautiful A major chord in 1st inversion with the midiant and dominant floating down to resolve to a non inverted AM but never to resolve to perpetuate the feeling of eternity without end!
Great video! Love budget decks, and I would rather build 5 fun decks than 1 super expensive deck. I have 9 Commander decks, 1 Sliver deck around $300, 1 Eldrazi around $180, and the rest are under $100, some under $50. My favorite budget deck is Odric, Lunarch Marshall. I originally built it for $20, but have upgraded it since and it ends up around $40 with board wipes and removal I've added (might be a good topic for Commander's Quarters, Mitch.) I keep winning with that deck because nobody sees it as a threat until it's too late. I subscribed to Commander's Quarters a couple months ago, and I love the "fastest growing Magic channel on UA-cam." Keep all the great content coming, guys!
I honestly made an artifacts commander deck with a twist inspired by mitch and his commander's quarters decks. I decided to use an uncommon rarity commander (Raff Capashen, for that sweet instant speed comboing). And limit myself to cards that had common printings for the rest of the deck. It honestly turned out great and I can't wait to actually try it out.
@33:18 - It is basically eggs, or the old vintage Tendrils decks. Cast free artifacts, bounce the back with rebuild and play them again and then storm off.
That’s my boi Mitch!! I’ve been subscribed to the commanders quarters since around 8000 subscribers and it’s so awesome to see them grow and be a part of it. My biggest advice with going budget is to not be discouraged by it. No budget deck tech is 100% the right deck tech, you can always insert cards you specifically want in there. And you’ll always have that deck, it’s not like it’s stuck at a budget deck either, you can slowly upgrade over time. I built my Vaevictus Asmadi the Dire deck using his deck tech, but have upgraded it ever since that deck tech came out and now it’s my most powerful deck. I still have a few cards from the original deck tech in there. Building a powerful deck on a budget is a marathon, not a sprint. If you spend about $10 a week on mtg, get a few non budget cards for that deck every week until the deck is where you’re at.
The mana dork myr!!! They're amazing for ramp for folks who can't get ahold of other rocks. Spring leaf drum, ally encampment and survivors encampment are also stellar if your in a go wide style, since your weak tokens turn into mana dorks
Bruna, Light of Alabaster is my favorite voltron commander, and very budget friendly too! cheat out enchantments from graveyard and hand anytime she blocks or attacks is sooo good! Not to mention can steal others auras too!
The best card for any ramp deck. And it's less than a dollar is upwelling a green enchantment that has it so everyone can keep the mana they produce. Also krosan verge 25 cent double w/g fetch land.
I have a really big colection coz I play nonstop from urza saga 'till today. But im still a really big fan of Mitch's channel coz he is a brewer at heart, he does super original decks, and I love them, i find myself making tons of those decks (like pheldagriph's) great job :D
Been only playing a weeks and working on a mono blue emry artifact commander build so this was a good listen. So far im under $75 for the whole deck and have bought the timeless wisdom precon that came with fierce guardianship and some other good cards. The cycling is cool but its more of a “kitchen magic commander deck” vs mono blue where it has lots of answers and can ramp up quick.
Nice! My two favorite commander decks I have are Teysa Karlov and Kenrith the Returned King! I just built the Kenrith deck and I won my second game with him last week.
He played his Golos deck against them the night before. I just ordered my parts for that one actually. Looks super fun! Good to see Mitch on here. Still needs to play a Game Knights though!
Mitch was awesome and I'm really glad you guys had him on. While I'm not a total budget player, I build way too many decks to build them expensively, so it's awesome you guys embraced that and brought him on. I love the commandzone, it's easily my favorite magic UA-cam channel. Having said that, I think my favorite individual episodes are when you bring someone else on. It's certainly not meant to be an offense, but it's just awesome when a new point of view is brought in the show. Again, certainly no offense to jimmy cause he's awesome, but when DJ was on for a few months there was just a different and unique vibe. And to turn that around, jimmy and Profs episode was great for the same reason. The content creation episode with your artist friend, also totally awesome. And all the commander summits, especially this last one, were amazing. I'm really hoping that this is something you can guys are able to do a bit more. Maybe I'm forgetting more and you do it more often then I think, but the guest episodes always stick with me as being my favorites.
Really happy to see Golos here. I made the same one Mitch put out (only added Soothsaying) and its absolutely hated by my group. Love the 2 channels, keep it up!
I found a 50 $ Uril, The Miststalker deck yesterday on tapped out that was fully competitive, it was very impressive for just 50 $. obviously, the mana base was really slow, the dual lands come into play tapped and such, but the rest of the deck was crazy good. Not sure if the guy got his deck from you or he made it hiself, but it was very impressive. Uril is one of those perfect Voltron commanders to build on a budget, along with Feather and maybe Zurgo too. so list of budget enchantments: Enchantment (37) 1x AEther Web 1x All That Glitters 1x Ancestral Mask 1x Armadillo Cloak 1x Asha's Favor 1x Banishing Light 1x Battle Mastery 1x Blessing of the Nephilim 1x Cartouche of Strength 1x Colossal Majesty 1x Eternal Warrior 1x Ethereal Armor 1x Faith Unbroken 1x Fertile Ground 1x Flickerform 1x Hammerhand 1x Holy Mantle 1x Indestructibility 1x Instill Energy 1x Inviolability 1x Messenger's Speed 1x Oblivion Ring 1x Pariah 1x Runes of the Deus 1x Sage's Reverie 1x Scourge of the Nobilis 1x Shield of the Oversoul 1x Shielded by Faith 1x Shiv's Embrace 1x Squee's Embrace 1x Tilonalli's Crown 1x Trace of Abundance 1x Triclopean Sight 1x Unflinching Courage 1x Unquestioned Authority 1x Vow of Wildness 1x Weirding Wood of these 37 Enchantments only 2 are over 1 $ and they are 1,49 $. They are "shield of the oversoul" and "Ancestral Mask" so these Enchantments are dirt cheap and really good. all these 37 are used in the Uril 50 $ budget deck. the guy that made the deck said it was possible to start killing people on turn 4 with it, so its really effective. Actually, what you are talking about at the end of the video isn't as much as an advantage as it is a hinderence for me. You see. In my country, anything I order from the US (or any other country for that matter), can only cost 300 Danish Kroner. currently, that amount comes to 44,67 $ currently. So no package must be more than 44,67 $ in value for items in the package + shipping. This is where Card kingdom hurts me you see, if I order all my cards from them, the package will have HUGE value and I will have to pay tax for it. anything over 44,67 gets taxed by 30% so I pay 30% extra. This is where TCGplayer saves me, there are different sellers there, meaning I can buy for 44,67 from one seller, 44,67 from another and so on until I have all the cards, I might pay 20 $ in shipping, but I pay no tax. plus, Card Kingdom charges 20 $ shipping to ship packages to Europe so I save nothing.
Awesome info! I just got into MTG and I even did a video on why people should join Magic in 2020. What should I do for Commander? I opened a bunch of random packs from random sets haha.
If you have a group that plays commander they are very likely to have spare decks. Borrow some see what you like and go from there. The commander decks are amazing for introducing yourself to the format as well
My favorite budget card is Dark Tutelage. Replaces Dark Confidant, a 60 dollar price tag versus a 35 cent card and they literally do the exact same thing. I don't mind sharing this info, already bought my 10 copies :) cheers.
I have a well running B/R/W deck that uses Alesha, Who Smiles At Death for the commander. Lots of cheap creatures that are all warrior, berserker and barbarian creatures and it also has Lovisa, Cold Eyes in it that beefs up those creatures. Some great targeted removal and signets for extra mana round out the deck.
I'm Aristocrats at heart. It was the first Commander deck I built and the most I've used. Sure, I've branched into other archetypes but my Aristocrats deck is my baby. And I built it so I can customize it how I want. One way I do that is through Commanders. Since I am in Mono-black I do have a limited choice but these are my favorites. Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder can churn out a lot of tokens that can all be sacrificed, especially if you run cards that can reanimate themselves like Gravecrawler and Reassembling Skeleton. (Someone was arguing with me that Crawler is only good in Zombie Tribal, but honestly, how can you say no to basically an infinite sacrifice?) Massacre Girl can be an even better, budget-friendly version of Damnation that can get around annoying things like protection and indestructible, especially if you have a "Gruesome Menagerie" setup going. (Having toughness 1, 2, 3, etc) God-Eternal Bontu can give you absolutely amazing card advantage in Commander, considering you can sacrifice any number of *permanents*. Even Lands, if you're in a desperate situation. And the newest ones, Ayara and Syr Konrad are even more Cutthroat-esque effects.
It's been a while since this video came out, and considering that many new players started playing after the release of the latest sets like LOTR and Doctor Who, I think would be nice if an updated version of this video came out.
One budget card I really like is Nephalia Academy. It’s an uncommon land from Eldritch Moon. It taps for colorless and reads “If an ability an opponent controls would cause you to discard a card, you may instead reveal that card and put it on top of your library.” While it isn’t useful in most games, it’s a very underrated tech against discard and it still functions as a land. I really like it but I know that it isn’t great since discard isn’t a common theme as far as I have seen.
Still wanna see Mitch, at the table, getting knighted.

Yeaaaaaah my man did it! He finally made it onto the Command Zone! Hecks yeah!
Mitch: "So...can Wayfarers bauble be my commander?"
I’m going to cast Ensoul Artifact on my wayfarers bauble.
For a serious answer to a silly question: Golos.
@@SomeFreakingCactus You speak reason
Marvel: Avengers Infinity War is the most ambitious crossover in history.
The Command Zone: Hold my sleeves!
Who else wants to see an episode of Game Knights with Mitch, where each player uses a deck no more expensive than $25-30? 🤔
Best tip:
Take a commander and a deck strategy that hardly anyone else plays. You will notive, that most of the cards are way cheaper.
Also: Build the deck before Command Zone makes an episode about it. Card prices will rise afterwards ^^
JLK “Pitiless Plunderer is just never going to be that expensive….” That card now sits comfortably at $20 up from less than $2 at time of recording.
Dream game:
Josh
Jimmy
Mitch
MTG Muddstah guy
j s oh hell yes
I’d trade pit MTG Muddstah Guy for Craig Blanches as he is such a super competitive player that doesn’t know the meaning of budget.
B U D G E T G A M E K N I G H T S !!!
Andrew A.K.A. MTG Muddstah would be great
What about the professor 🤔
LOL, just re-watched this episode- @ 11:35- Josh- "Pitiless Plunderer is just never gonna be an expensive card"- Card Kingdom Price today- $15.99 USD

You the real hero.
Thanks hero
My fave man
Mitch has such a fantastic personality, and he's so incredibly knowledgeable!
I think the only issue with this is command zone guys dont play cedh a lot
@@miaschwartz1074 they don't play brawl or oathbreaker much either, but they make room. 🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️
I mean, I don't think anything is off the table. The only problem is Idk if those guys would be interested. Although, on the other hand, lab maniacs were super hyped to play cedh with that guy from the rules committee
hanna klasifire I know for a fact JLK has a cedh deck so it's not too out of the question
The most highly anticipated crossover event of the season!! Thanks guys!
So happy to see this collaboration. I am a huge fan of both of these channels. Two of the most professional MTG channels in the business.
Sounds like Mitch busted out his Golos deck against Josh and Jimmy. Built it and love it!
Frickin YES! Finally mich on the command zone! Keep it up both of you! 👍
Hey Jimmy, your phone light is on 49:55. Love Budget decks, especially since I get to own them XD. Don't forget those 5 videos a week Mitch.
Oh my god. I am so proud of commander quarters. I knew he would get this far.
It's funny you mention pulling an Urza and building a deck around it, I bought a pack this weekend and thought about that and then sold it and turned it into a pauper deck utilizing the Urza lands. Turned my little pack into a competitive deck! It was pretty cool
I love how Josh said at 11:30 "Pitiless Plunderer is just never gonna be really expensive." and here we are 3 years later with a $12 market price
Great episode! So incredibly refreshing to hear Mitch talk under 250,000 words per minute. On his channel, he's basically competing with the dude from those old Micro Machines commercials.
This past weekend Tidespout Tyrant won me the game with Stonecloaker in hand and Warden of Evos Isle on board. So much fun (for me).
My first EDH deck was based from a budget deck of this channel, Reaper King.
Even after making other 2 decks, RP EDH remains as my favorite, thank you!
My most favorite episode in awhile. Have this guy on more! Get him on extra turns and game knights
11:31 “Like Pitiless Plunderer isn’t ever gonna be really really expensive.”
MITCH! I've been waiting for this crossover for so long, great to see content creators branching out more frequently to make great videos. Awesome episode!
"Pitiless Plunderer will never be that expensive." - Josh Lee Kwai
y'all know what this means, Mitch is gonna play a budget deck in the next game knights.
@@brendaneichler5244 "I wish they played decks they actually built themselves, but not the cards they want to use!" = Every subscriber on here.
@@andrewsparkes8829 I'm not saying he's wrong to play with those cards, just that his preferred play style is antithetical to a budget episode.
Mitch might be on extra turns and game knights.
bought his budget skullbriar deck, one of my scariest decks in my play group, for i think it was 30 ish when i bought it
YES! Finally! Thank you so much for getting Mitch on the show.
11:30 2020 - "Pitiless Plunderer is just never gonna be that expensive" 2023 - 😬
Random singing, random singing, beautiful A major chord in 1st inversion with the midiant and dominant floating down to resolve to a non inverted AM but never to resolve to perpetuate the feeling of eternity without end!
Super cool to see Mitch here! Very excited!
So this means we will eventually get a Game Knights with Mitch!!! WOOOOOO
Two of my favorite magic channels join forces, awesome. Now we need a commander game.
@33:18 - It is basically eggs, or the old vintage Tendrils decks. Cast free artifacts, bounce the back with rebuild and play them again and then storm off.
Aaaahh love ya channel mitch! Glad to see you're on the command zone!!
11:30 "pitiless plunder will never be that expensive" I wish :(
Budget commander with Mitch rocks, you guys rock, thanks for the sweet video guys!
I've had quite some success with a rareless Zada Hedron Grinder that used Mitch's $15 deck tech as a base.
The mana dork myr!!! They're amazing for ramp for folks who can't get ahold of other rocks. Spring leaf drum, ally encampment and survivors encampment are also stellar if your in a go wide style, since your weak tokens turn into mana dorks
This is one of the greatest crossovers of MtG UA-cam, period. Also, please get this man on Game Knights.
First you buy wayfarer’s bauble, then jam 99 other cards into the deck.
Anje is a great card to make a budget deck around, as all it revolves arounds filling your deck with madness cards which are all very inexpensive.
"pitiless plunder will never be expensive"
Pitiless Plunder: lol
Bruna, Light of Alabaster is my favorite voltron commander, and very budget friendly too! cheat out enchantments from graveyard and hand anytime she blocks or attacks is sooo good! Not to mention can steal others auras too!
Finally my 2 favorite channels all on the same show! Awesome episode guys. Hoping for an Extra Turns or Game Knights with Mitch on it
The best card for any ramp deck.
Yay! Mitch is on CommandZone! I really hope he's in a Game Knights
Great to see Quarter’s get some props!
I want to see Mitch on Game Knights with all budget decks
Nice! My two favorite commander decks I have are Teysa Karlov and Kenrith the Returned King! I just built the Kenrith deck and I won my second game with him last week.
“Pitiless plunderer is never going to be expensive” I wish this was still true lol.
I haven't even watched the video yet. But Commander's Quarters w/ Command Zone is an instant like.
He played his Golos deck against them the night before. I just ordered my parts for that one actually. Looks super fun! Good to see Mitch on here. Still needs to play a Game Knights though!
So much yes! My two favorite UA-cam channels!!
Watching this now and it is such a good video. Just getting into playing commander and this has been very helpful
Uril is one of those perfect Voltron commanders to build on a budget, along with Feather and maybe Zurgo too.
so list of budget enchantments:
Enchantment (37)
1x AEther Web
1x All That Glitters
1x Ancestral Mask
1x Armadillo Cloak
1x Asha's Favor
1x Banishing Light
1x Battle Mastery
1x Blessing of the Nephilim
1x Cartouche of Strength
1x Colossal Majesty
1x Eternal Warrior
1x Ethereal Armor
1x Faith Unbroken
1x Fertile Ground
1x Flickerform
1x Hammerhand
1x Holy Mantle
1x Indestructibility
1x Instill Energy
1x Inviolability
1x Messenger's Speed
1x Oblivion Ring
1x Pariah
1x Runes of the Deus
1x Sage's Reverie
1x Scourge of the Nobilis
1x Shield of the Oversoul
1x Shielded by Faith
1x Shiv's Embrace
1x Squee's Embrace
1x Tilonalli's Crown
1x Trace of Abundance
1x Triclopean Sight
1x Unflinching Courage
1x Unquestioned Authority
1x Vow of Wildness
1x Weirding Wood
of these 37 Enchantments only 2 are over 1 $ and they are 1,49 $.
The commander decks are amazing for introducing yourself to the format as well
If you're looking to start building a commander deck its best to buy the precons or just the singles.
What legendary creatures did you get from random packs?.. that could be a decent start depending on the pulls...
(Someone was arguing with me that Crawler is only good in Zombie Tribal, but honestly, how can you say no to basically an infinite sacrifice?)
Massacre Girl can be an even better, budget-friendly version of Damnation that can get around annoying things like protection and indestructible, especially if you have a "Gruesome Menagerie" setup going. (Having toughness 1, 2, 3, etc)
God-Eternal Bontu can give you absolutely amazing card advantage in Commander, considering you can sacrifice any number of *permanents*.
