Hello car care nut. To answer your question regarding the under hood diagnostic plug, its mainly used for factory purposes. We technicians rarely use it for diagnosis purposes.
I appreciate they made a car that doesn't look like every other car. Some of the cladding appears to create the illusion that it's rugged and higher off the ground.

Actually, I bought the limited version of this car because of it's looks and function. I get many comments from people about how they love the way the car looks. A lot say they like it's futuristic look. Like you said though, looks are personal. There are probably just as many people who say to themselves that it's ugly - LOL. I've had the car since October 1st of 2023 and love it more every day. I had a 2021 Sonata Limited before this and a 2018 Genesis G80 Sport before that and loved them. But, believe it or not, this has been my favorite of them all. Love your great reviews and keep up the good work!
Looking at a Limited AWD this fall and if I get one, it's going to be the Red Kona with Gray interior! Sharp!! Better than that "Yellow Submarine" color they keep promoting.
That's what I got the red Kona with the grey interior. I was originally going to get White, but my dealership actually had all the colors, except for the Neon Yellow, and I actually liked the Red the best.
I've seen the red n line and wasn't huge on it. Not in the limited though. I'm hooked on the yellow, but I saw the Orange recently and was a big fan of that too

As usual an honest clear review. Thank you. I watch every single one even if it is something like this that I am not interested in.These are my favorites. Thank you again.
@@dfinite1111 it's fine, every new cross over has plastic cladding. Just don't wax it. I had a black panel 2005 Honda Element for 18 years. Little cleaning and no wax still looked good.
On the matter of the rear suspension, and this is something you might not know. The Hybrid (Not available in the US) and the EV use the Multi link McPherson strut like the AWD and N-Line. I will note some markets (Australia for example) only get AWD in the N Line. Hybrid is FWD only. For me, the side looks a lot better on the N-line where all the plastic is body coloured, then the design lines make a LOT more sense.
Personally, I love the way my 2024 Kona Limited looks from the outside, at least it stands apart from every other small SUV on the market that I see all a matter of taste. I think it looks great. And as far as that automatically opening tailgate? That gets old pretty fast, if you hesitated all around the back of the car, the gates gonna open. Again personally, I couldn’t turn off the automatic gate, opening feature fast enough. All in all the very good review, keep them coming!
I currently own a 2020 Kona Limited which overall has been the best car I have ever owned. Your comment regarding the DCT is only somewhat accurate. Is it a good transmission for bumper to bumper stop and go traffic, no. But it's miles better than any other traditional or CVT transmissions that I have experienced in all my previous many cars. The exterior looks of the Kona obviously won't win any beauty awards, but it's a practical reliable car that I would purchase again.
I hope you're enjoying the heck out of that Kona, they are really sharp looking cars. I have been driving Hyundais since the late 90's, and they all have been very reliable. I am currently driving my 3rd Elantra right now. and I really like it but I might go with something that is higher off the ground next time for easier accessibility.
@@claireperry9623 My post was awhile ago--I leased a KIA Niro EV Wave (top trim level) because I got a GREAT deal (nobody wants a non-Tesla EV) and I find the new Kona design to be horrid. Kona looks like a Sherman Tank and the KIA Niro has the same interior design as the Kona.
Timing chains, normal heads, non direct injection, old school design only 15 hp less than the same size toyota engine. I would say this is a great engine. Uncomplicated is good when are they going to figure that out? Plus if you absolutely abuse this and blow it up, a replacement is cheap. I would buy that 2.0liter motor.
i used to have a 2018 kona which i loved a lot because the design is cool...got in a terrible accident where both the front and back got wrecked...and this 2024 design is really beautiful...
Always appreciate your opinions on these cars from a mechanics point of view. One slight note is that the 2.0L engine is actually mpi (multi port) not port only (still better overall than direct only). Also the cvts have a steel belts in them, which are normally only used for larger suv's. Not saying it's going to be more durable in the long run, but nice to know that certain componets were thought out in that way. I owned a 2020 kia soul for 3 and a half years and put 75k miles on it (worked for uber for a year and a half during pandemic) and out side of having an idler pulley fail causing wear on the belt (replaced under warranty) it was a great setup that got really good gas mileage. If your just driving around town and keep up with maintenance, it should last longer than the turbo model (unless you really want the extra power it puts down)
power train which includes engine and transmission is under a lifetime warranty by way of the dealer. on top of Hyundai initial 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. great vehicle. i just recently purchased this exact model (Kona Limited AWD) but paint is Abyss black. Great car. Perfect as a family for my Wife and fits well with lots of space for my 2 young children. great review 👍🏻
I hope Hyundai will release Kona hybrid (1.6T + Hybrid + 8spd Auto) next year then it will be a perfect car for daily commute. There's an option I wish Hyundai will add to the Limited in the future is the power folding side mirrors. Anyway I REALLY LIKE this channel. Thank you sir for your time of making this video and I already subscribed.
I have to disagree with the exterior look of the new Kona. I actually think they did very well: it looks different, sporty, contemporary & somewhat sophisticated.
I really like the exterior design... love the 'chiseled out' details of the body and the over exaggerated wheel well design ... maybe a bit too exaggerated around the wheels ...but looks nice.. the front end looks very futuristic. Reminds me of the Back to the Future movie !! Love the overall exterior design ....EXCEPT the tail lights ! Tail lights need to be more closer to each other ... there's too much space between them ((( Hyundai should hire me to redesign their tail lights on this vehicle as well as the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe. Don't like those either ... 😒 😕
The 2023 model was perfect as far as exterior looks go. The new headlights are ugly and the side profile does look almost identical to the Pontiac Aztec 😂 (another failed car) they should have taken the N line motor and made it AWD would have been a nice addition and made this top of its class power wise
2024 kona nline new owner , love it , my wheel fenders are crisp panted white ,no black to dull , great look , but till u drive the turbo 8x , you will not experience the snot this car has on aggressive driving like i to appreciate this car , looking forward to snow with four wheel drive . I am happy that ur happy with my choice . Ur dead on with ur review
Just got the 2024 Kona orange pearl I love the color and it really suits the look of the car, very sharp, drives great, excellent gas mileage and I love the big screen
I loved my 2017 sonata up until recently. I bought it new, and have taken really good care of it. But when it hit 80,000 miles it has just started to fall apart it seems. Axles leaking and slinging grease, moisture inside headlight assembly, 3rd brake light flickering, knock sensor went out and threw the car in limp mode (that was a big one, had to be towed), and a few other minor issues. Between my extended warranty and the powertrain warranty it's not costing me any money at least. But getting an appointment with the dealership to get issues looked at is the worst experience you will ever have to go through. When your only car breaks down and every dealer in town tells you they can't even look at it for 4 months you'll be ready to dump it right then and there. When you accompany all these minor issues I've been having with the absurd wait times to try and get them addressed, it's got me considering dumping it. It's only going to get worse as it gets older. It's a shame because I really do love the car. I would be willing to overlook the minor issues I've had if it wasn't such a pain to get them taken care of.
I had a 17 Sonata Ultimate and I loved it too! I got rid of it when the bumper to bumper was getting ready to expire, and news about widespread engine issues was just beginning to come out. The dealer has a parking lot full of warrantied blown engines and a months long backlog. I'm so glad I traded it for a Toyota! After owning 3 Sonatas I will never buy a Hyundai (or Kia) again.
@@phrankguy1 that's about where I'm at. I have been contemplating trading it in for a 24 Camry XSE V6 before they stop making the v6 camry. My mom has a 15 camry and it has been flawless.
If you plan on keeping it for many years, buy the Camry! I am stuck in the middle of a 4 year bronco lease and wish I had gone for the last of the v6 Lexus RX@@cincy9381
I love the fun look of the outside. It is striking and not boring. The driver instrument in my car displays the navigation in the center only and android Google maps they're too. A great car so far.
I think the kick sensor ways better it works everytime for me and not annoying when standing behind cleaning or doing something or when talking to my neighbor and it popup the door, this happened to me many times and is very annoying!
thanks man..I just leased one..I have to check but I dont think there is a auto rear end lift..I do know there is parking assist...u dont even need to be in the car..its pretty awesome..started raining the other night driving home from work and the wipers came on!!!!
I did 7650 km with N-Line US Model and I was so amazed by this car that I have orderd one N-Line 198 KM AWD 8Speed Autoamtic 2024 model... Can't wait till I get it so I could enjoy it even more. This car in AWD N-Line spec looks great and it drives like... well... Subaru WRX ;o) That gave me the same level of joy and control over a car.
Great review. The trunk opening feature has been with Hyundai at least since 2019 Santa Fe (Limited). My 2023 Santa Fe has it also. It's simply fabulous feature.
my 2018 kona is still running smoothly but i want this kona update really bad. while my DCT in my kona isn't broken yet, I completely agree with your transmission point. DCT is bad in traffic but good in highway, CVT is mid in traffic but bad in high way, but normal TC Automatics are relatively well in both situations, so i don''t understand why manufacturers tend to do CVTs and DCTs. to be honest the efficiency only dips a little when choosing a TC auto. and CVTs and DCTs often cost more in repairs and is less reliable than traditional automatics.
opening the back hands free is great. I am unloading the car at home and have my hands full after unloading. How do I close it? The close button is a little high for me to jump up and peck at it with my nose. With my RAV4 I simply do another back door dance to close it.
I'm honestly surprised I didnt see you talk about how you can pull the car out of a parking spot, forward or backward, with the key fob!! But glad I learned about the key fob feature of opening the trunk, they didnt even show me that at the dealer! I didn't know about the ambient lighting either nor was shown it! Currently between this and the CX-50.. but just started the car hunt
For what it’s worth I owned a 2020 Kona SEL AWD with the Plus package and traded it at 37k miles and 4 years of ownership. The car ran flawlessly the whole time. Fit and finish was actually great with no squeaks or rattles. I wanted something with more room and power so I traded in on a 2024 Passport Trailsport. The Kona got around 30-32 MPG on the highway and 28MPG in town. It was included in an engine recall campaign but my engine never failed. Overall I was very pleased with it and after I replaced the awful factory tires with Bridgestone Turranzas the car handles like a little go kart. I would consider buying one again if I bought one new, especially now with more room. My transmission was a 6 speed and it was pretty smooth and sport mode actually transformed the personality quite a bit. Quick heads up, my ex wife’s 2019 Sonata SEL also had that sensor trunk release. We had a love/hate relationship with it as it was easy to set off in our small garage.
I like the look !!! And yes, I owned a Pontiac Aztec 😊 to me it has the same look as the tucson from the side. But also with some ionic 5 and 6 touches. Which I own a limited version !!!
Thanks so much for the great and thorough review. I don't agree that it's reminiscent of the Aztec though. I bought one of these back in October. I got the SEL with "Convenience Package" and all wheel drive. I really wanted to get the Limited edition with the better motor but at 6' 5" tall, I cannot have a sun/moon roof in a vehicle. And very disappointedly you cannot get the Limited or the N series trim without it! Quite the bummer as I hate the lack of pickup that it has but other than that, I think it's a great car. Much agreed about the gas mileage as well. Not sure how I am getting the same MPG as I did on my 2019 Santa Fe with 50k miles on it that I traded in. It is very roomy feeling inside and the technology is great for the price along with the amount of safety features you get. Been buying Hyundai's since 2010 and they still deliver on that. You didn't mention the cargo net, which mine came with. It is pretty useless for groceries as it does not go across the width of the vehicle but is more of a trap, to hold a box or something similar in place. I plan to trade it in when it is approaching 3 years and if they still have the same engine options and sun/moon roof packaging, then I am going over to Toyota to get a RAV 4 Hybrid to get more HPs. There is a Hybrid Kona I believe but not yet in the US.
5:23 i had a DCT and i was not a fan of it. it was the kia forte GT and it was my daily. 2023 year. it was totaled last week. i realized i would never get a DCT for a daily ever again. NOT SMOOTH. i like smooth automatic transmissions
Just a note re spare tire. Only included on the AWD for Limited models. I purchased the FWD.. Not only is it not included, Hyundai doesn't make it available after purchase. Hopefully, some 3rd party vendor will step up to address.
I have the service manuals for this car - that under hood port just replicates the diagnostic CAN bus that is on the OBD2 port inside the car. Nothing more.
Thank you for such a thorough review. I'm still driving a 2006 Camry LE, and If you haven't purchased a vehicle in 18 years, all the changes are quite overwhelming!
I have been searching for the simplest cars money can buy in 2024. Right now it is either Hyundai Accent (used), Nissan Versa, or Mazda Miata. They are becoming harder to find.
Excellent review. You're quite logical in your assessment and I like your insight into the mechanical aspects of vehicles. For me, Hyundai's exterior design language is not too good. I appreciate them wanting to be unique and try something different, but different can be beautiful. The Kona and Elantra are not beautiful. They're overwrought. The interiors on both are styled in a very classy way though.
Thank you for another good explanation of the mechanics of this turbo 1.6L Kona for potentional new car buyers. Especially for those of us that keep a vehicles past loan or warranty. Myself I drive a 2015 Camry LE I purchased used/cert-preowned w/ warranty in 2017.. Previously had a 2001 Jetta GL 5 sp, manual windows, 2.0L engine for 15 yrs, 120k miles, CA & FL car. Good looking car. I'd opt for non-turbo for any car I'd get today.
I will like to see a compare match between 2024 Hyundai Kona Hybrid and the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid 2024. I'm looking to buy a new car and have a use challenge between those two!
I had my name down for a Corolla Cross hybrid but the 6 month wait was too long so I went looking elsewhere and arrived at Hyundai. I am sooooo happy I did. The Kona N line hybrid is streaks ahead of the boring CC in looks and handling. I love my Kona.
It’s a good review and a good car. I’ve had a couple of Kia and Hyundai in there really good basic cars take the silly sunroof and automatic tailgate opening off of that car and it would be perfect.
I actually love the wheel/fender area. The weird angles make it look kind of hectic/erratic. It’s very cool looking. Now I can’t say the same about the strange bubble towards the back. Reminds me of when you spill water on particle board furniture and it swells up. It’s an eye sore… The Toyota Sienna has something similar to this side bulge. Ppl say it’s a “looker” as far as vans are concerned, but eww so I hate that side panel “particle board” bubble. I’d still drive this and love the style. It’s so different in the front and back and wheel area. I respect ur opinion, but I also disagree that they were lazy in the design. It may not tick all the boxes, but it’s not cookie cutter which I appreciate.
i think it's kinda disappointing the kona got bigger. the old kona was an excellent hatchback for people who wanted to pretend they didn't buy a hatchback. It was a foot shorter than actual hatchbacks like the civic hatch, crosstrek/impreza, and forte5. you could fit it anywhere, and by all accounts, the kona N was a hoot to drive. or if you just wanted creature comforts, u could option it out nicer than most other small cars, which were built to lesser price points. it had a lil niche. googling it now, and the new kona is still small... just two inches longer than a golf GTI. but its like 5 inches taller, and it feels like this is just another baby step towards the death of the hatchback (and the small car) in north america.
Nline has body colored without black cladding. The design is partially for the coefficient of drag. 2024 Kona was designed as a *EV first* then modified for ICE. Opposite from what most do. The swooping design has a function its not just because. HMG updated the first new vehicles made with their latest tech...lol. As each line is either redesigned or refreshed (see new Santa Fe/Sorento) the updated tech will be included. I can't think of any manufacturer that does it any other way. Genesis will get updates as well as they get around to their refresh or redesign one would think.
I have a couple relatives with the last model Kona and they really like them. I just replaced a 14 year old Hyundai with 160k. No major failures, but a lot of parts failed really quick, seats were uncomfortable, clear coat faded and everything feels cheap. I feel like we got our money's worth but it just wasn't a pleasant driving experience for me
Spare tire is not in the Canadian models. The space is there but they give a tire repair kit instead. About the shifter, the mid to lower trims have the standard shifter rather than that odd column one.
I have auto trunk opener on my 2023 Sonata LTD which is a pain at times when working around the garage or driveway. It can be disabled in the car settings. Looking for SUV. Wish the physical buttons were on the Tuscon. May end up going with Kona.
I remember the first time I washed my Sonata and wondering what the beeping was until the trunk popped open. In regards to your wishes for physical buttons on the Tucson, you should look at the 2025 model which was revealed recently. They refreshed the exterior and interior including removing that horrid touch capacitive dashboard.
At first glance I didn't like the new design..but it's grown on me and I now think its a really nice vehicle..especially in the cyber gray with light gray interior. My neighbor purchased one and freaked me out when I saw it backing out of his garage with no driver! ( feature on the key fob remote..I think that's why the emergency key is separate and not inside the key fob.. to allow space for that extra feature).
Thank you for this review! I am looking at this in N-Line Ultimate and comparing it to a CX-30 GT and Crosstrek Limited (all 2024), its very hard to decide between the 3 personally!
Thank you. Well done review. Some things are a matter of taste when. It comes to looks. I especially like your review of the mechanical and technical areas.
No! In August 2023, Hyundai recalled 13,160 2023 Hyundai Kona vehicles due to a fire risk. The recall also included other Hyundai models, as well as Kia vehicles, due to a potential issue with the electronic controller in the oil pump assembly. The controller may contain damaged electrical components that could cause the pump to overheat, which could increase the risk of a vehicle fire. Both automakers have asked owners to park their vehicles outside and "away from structures" until repairs can be made. Hyundai's recall includes the 2023 Tucson, Sonata, Elantra and Kona vehicles, as well as 2023 and 2024 Palisade cars.

Would love to see a video on “ should you buy a 2024 Chevy Trax/ Buick Envista”
You're my new car review guy. You are THE BEST!
The Hyundai badge is the shape of a sales man and customer shaking hands , and that hidden key fob had been out years with nissan ive got one
Your reviews on cars are exceptional! Your honest option is worth its weight in gold.
bro sold me this car better then a car sales man but i’m still on the fence due to reliability concerns cheers
I have 23' nline. I love the dct transmission once you get the feel of it. I always engage the manual in stop and go traffic, and it's great.
My dad has a 2021 Kona awd. 20k miles average 30mpg. I drove it few times and it was smooth ride and easy to manuver around the city.
I have a 2022 Kona Limited FWD and never will get FWD again! Looking at the 2025 Limited AWD (October delivery, so 2025 model year by then).
@@Steve_in_NJ You didn't say why?
If your just driving around town and keep up with maintenance, it should last longer than the turbo model (unless you really want the extra power it puts down)
all CVT belts have steel reinforcement
It’s not a steel belt it’s a chain driven cvt.
Your reviews are the most detailed on UA-cam
power train which includes engine and transmission is under a lifetime warranty by way of the dealer. on top of Hyundai initial 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. great vehicle. i just recently purchased this exact model (Kona Limited AWD) but paint is Abyss black.
Thank you so much for taking your time explaining the details of all the Kona versions ❤
I have to disagree with the exterior look of the new Kona. I actually think they did very well: it looks different, sporty, contemporary & somewhat sophisticated.
As a gen 1 Kona N owner, I also find it nice, just not the direction I was looking for.
You need new glasses 😂
I just want to know why this mechanic thought aesthetics were a mechanical issue.
N Line its hands down the best looking inside and out.
Yeah, that’s why I drive a toyota lol don’t even recall the last time it went in a shop for anything other than tires and alignment
If you plan on keeping it for many years, buy the Camry! I am stuck in the middle of a 4 year bronco lease and wish I had gone for the last of the v6 Lexus RX@@cincy9381
why do you even use dealerships esp for minor issues?
I love the fun look of the outside. It is striking and not boring. The driver instrument in my car displays the navigation in the center only and android Google maps they're too. A great car so far.
I think the kick sensor ways better it works everytime for me and not annoying when standing behind cleaning or doing something or when talking to my neighbor and it popup the door, this happened to me many times and is very annoying!
the cubby above the glove box is a nice touch and really should be in every vehicle
I had a Chevy Sonic that had that. Best thing about that car.
Best looking car in its class.. in my opinion.
thanks man..I just leased one..I have to check but I dont think there is a auto rear end lift..I do know there is parking assist...u dont even need to be in the car..its pretty awesome..started raining the other night driving home from work and the wipers came on!!!!
The disrespect to Rex owners.
@@Jeremy-yg4ok Nope. Just this car is so good.
I'm picking up my SEL tomorrow. I like the style of the body. Stands out in this class.
I have a 22 kona on lease. This will be my next car
Please do a review like this for the Hyundai Venue!
I wonder if those front closing vents will freeze shut in the winter in a snowstorm and overheat the engine.
I bought a brand new Hyundai Tucson in 2017. It was towed to the dealership twice in the first 4000 miles. Never again
Many car fenders rust there from dirt and water exposure. So they use plastic to protect it
@@_hmineeeBody and fender cladding traps dirt and moisture even more and causes more rust. You just don't see it from outside.
That Hyundai was a lemon. Clearly you're not that bright to know the difference

One of the best car reviews I've seen on UA-cam.
I like this mechanic he’s honest and I really like my new 2024 Kona
Would be cool to see you review something german, like Volkswagen or BMW. Great review though, like usual!
I’m sure he wouldn’t mind but he can only review what they’ll send him
opening the back hands free is great. I am unloading the car at home and have my hands full after unloading. How do I close it? The close button is a little high for me to jump up and peck at it with my nose. With my RAV4 I simply do another back door dance to close it.
Am considering one. Great timing. Either this or the new Sonata
Best car in the segment
Appreciate the comments on function over form, especially the things that would bother us on a daily basis. Thanks for doing these reviews AMD!
I like the design of the outside
I don't want turbos, GDI, wet belts, or variable valve lift. The simple uncomplicated design of the base Kona is what makes it attractive.
I would really love to see you review the Genesis GV70 3.5T. You have amazing reviews. My family and I love watching the videos.
Our 2019 Santa Fe Limited Ultimate has that rear hatch sensor to open hands-free. It’s great until you loiter around the rear and the hatch opens.
I have a s 2021 SE. Absolutely love it.
My 2017 Hyundai Elantra with Tech package has the auto trunk. Nice feature. I would've thought most Hyundais would've had it by now.
I wish Toyota would adopt the auto door opener for the rear hatch, as mine never works with the "dance"
I also wish Toyota would give you a spare tire too as their hybrid crossover does NOT!
@@Steve_in_NJ sorry to dissapoint you but my 2022 Venza has a spare tire lol

Better hope you never get rear-ended. There is virtually no protection by the so-called bumper. This design is becoming very common on SUVs.
Still in EU people generally do buy it for its looks :) its funky, fresh and usable. TBH the plastics around wheels reminds me of RAV4
Really nice car. My son bough the intermediate trim for 25k or 26k early this year. He loves it. Modern look and inside looks great as well
It’s a good review and a good car.
Love AMD's technical reviews.
i think it's kinda disappointing the kona got bigger. the old kona was an excellent hatchback for people who wanted to pretend they didn't buy a hatchback.
Genesis will get updates as well as they get around to their refresh or redesign one would think.
why is the left part of the display missing? Otherwise it looks absolutely perfect!!!
Really liked the Kona N. One of the few new cars that I really like, actually.
I own a 2023 Kona N
Absolutely incredible to drive.

In Africa, its a nut.
I rented one for a road trip and I was impressed….Infact I am about to trade my Ml320 for it…..Fuel efficient and it’s soo sporty!.
