  • Jack has been spending some time with the new Kia Niro EV - a car with big shoes to fill. Its predecessor was the UK's second best-selling EV last year and with good reason: it's a brilliant all-rounder offering big range and outstanding value for money. So, how does the new one stack up? Is it more than just a pretty face, or has Kia lost its way?

I know the Niro and Kona EV's are known and touted as efficient EV's, but having done approx 10k miles in my 2021 Kona EV i'm surprised this isn't something you hear more of. Currently averaging 4.3 m/kWh over that 10k with mostly motorway driving, much of which was done in Jan/Feb/March. A lot of reviewers seem impressed getting 3 m/kWh from much more expensive cars...

I agree. I have a Kia Soul , much under rated in my opinion, this summer I easily obtain 4.5 - 5m/kWh and a range of over 300 miles on mixed road driving. This will obviously reduce in the colder weather to come, but many of the more expensive EVs don't come anywhere near these figures.

We have had our Niro EV for 1 week now with total distance 400km so far. We get 3,9m/kWh or 16kWh/100km. I think the 4,5…5m/kWh are unrealistic when driving not overly carefully and if there are climbs and faster sections (fast being a little above 100km/h or 62m/h. I would like a Kona EV over a Niro and when I have tested the Kona (Sep 22), I got 6.1mi/KWh on town/urban mixed, which is impressive and 4.5mi/KWh on a motorway trip.
When I tested a Model 3, the benchmark for efficiency, I only got 3.5mi/KWh so, yes I would say the Kona is super efficient.

Thanks Jack. Your style and language has been improving in leaps nd bounds. Keep up the good work!
The Kia certainly looks better, and performs well. If I needed another EV, it would be high on my list for consideration. We're seeing real world range of 240 at motorway speeds to over 300 miles around town, from our ZE50, depending upon the amount of Lead in our right feet, and apart from the even slower recharging speed, nominally 50 kW, it suits us perfectly. Our economy meter is showing 6.2 miles per kWh right now, with daytime temperatures in the low 20's. I'd really love to test drive the Niro for a few days, to see what it can do with my mix of driving. It might attain more than 7 mi/kWh.
But the manufacturers that the Germans really need to be worried about are in China, not Korea. They've pretty much cornered the battery manufacturing market, and are doing the same with EV's in general. In particular, keep a close eye on BYD over the next 12 to 18 months. They've pushed VW into third place already, and are starting to challenge Tesla.

If the two-tier boot/trunk means the same as it means on the 2020 and newer Soul EV, it refers to the ability to not only remove the floor, but to place it on a lower track. If so, you get to choose between more space or a floor that’s level with the opening.

In your future reviews, do you think y'all could just briefly give a short PoV shot of the rearward visibility?
A lot of the modern cars - especially crossovers like the Niro - I've test driven in recent years, the two big problems I've had are visibility out the rear window, and head room (I'm 6'4"). It's like a lot of manufacturers are using backup cameras as a crutch so they can focus on the aero features and reduce the rear window size.
It's been bothering me quite a bit, and since I use your reviews to write my "cars I plan on test driving" list, it would be nice to know if I should even bother or if that rear visibility is so poor is becomes a deal breaker. Cheers!

I think the charge port on the front is brilliant but it's going to face the same kind of challenge as the classic 70s gas filler behind the license plate at the back: collisions. If the port's on the nose it makes it puts it at risk. While an electrical plug is less hazardous to have in the bump zone than an open gas filler neck, it will make it much easier to permanently disable.

The chargeport is nothing but a simple connector very easily and cheaply replaced.
And if an ev has been in a serious enough crash that it is properly destroyed it wise to not charge it anyway before the car is checked out.

Love this review as a 22’ Ev Niro owner. I test drove this new one and saw some major difference on the interior: switch gear on the doors feels noticeably chintzy, gloss black capacitive controls may push away utilitarian minded and OCD owners, there is less padding on the center and outboard arm rests, there are no rear vents for passengers on the base model like my 22, and the smaller screen in the infotainment is blatant cost cutting when the base model in the US comes with the 10 inch screen. It’s definitely a greater car now in some aspects, but I see drawbacks for the practical minded owners that were marketed to in the past like myself.

I suspect there are a large percentage of potential owners that don't care too much about charging speed or range (as long as it is enough to cover their needs). My guess is that many (if not most) buyers will do most of their charging at home negating the importance of both range and charging speed at a charging station. Efficiency then becomes the most important factor in which EV is the better vehicle.

Since I'm only hiring a car if I've got a long way to travel, I'm probably using rapid chargers more than most, and even I am content with the charging speed. Frankly, with the so-so rollout of CCS 150 kW+ chargers outside the largest cities (ref: Zap-map), I'm not going to go out of my way (or even change my stopping point) to find one over a 50 kW charger. Almost the reverse - since as a car renter I'm not driving regularly, I need the rest breaks more, so if it takes me 45 minutes rather than 15 to charge 20-80%, that's just more time for me to fortify myself for the next leg of the journey.

I disagree with the placement of the charging port. Most of the damage in traffic (especially in cities) happen on the front and the back of the cars. This is the worst place, if they bump into it while parking (as my neighbor recently did with my car) the charging port can get damaged and you'll have no way to charge your car!!! You can wait a few weeks to get a scratch or dent repaired (most garages make you wait that long), but that's not possible if you can't recharge, right?

    • @Lueeee

I kind of disagree on that one. if it's a high speed accident then you will most likely have to tow it anyways, and if it's slow speed then it won't damage the charge port. And on top of that I don't think we should put the charger in a worse spot just because it might get damaged, but makes my everyday life a lot easier.

    • @ivo4357
      @ivo4357 Рік тому +5

@@Lueeee as I said in my comment, my car was hit in the front by my neighbor, who has a military all terrain vehicle. A low speed crash was enough to damage my BMW X1 (already a sturdy car) in exactly the spot that port would be. I can tell you right now, the port will no longer open if that happens (imagine something hitting the side port of a gasoline car, that would be damaged too). It's not so much the charging outlet that will get damaged, it's the port itself. Also this: a front port is not easier for everyone. In my example, I need to drive my car fairly close to my garage workbench. It would be much harder for me to use a front port than a side port. So I get that some people find it useful, but to say as they do in the review that ALL vehicles should be made like that, is just plane wrong. What would be a practical solution, is to use 2 charging ports. As 2 electric charging ports is much easier to achieve than in a gasoline version (it's only some electrical wire), I think that's the way to go.

Have had one of ye-olde e-Niros since March 2019, first batch to come into France. Now 67,000 km in and still loving it. Entertaining review as always but not sure that those wheels are that big, perhaps 18’s...could have said more about the reduction in torque on the new one, different mapping of the loud pedal...also the charging speed, though no better at peak levels is supposed to sustain it for longer..and the fact that the car is not on the same platform as the old one, it’s a bit longer and wider.. If I have a bugbear with ours it’s that peak charging isn’t sustained for long. We did a 1,100 km trip to Frankfurt in mid winter following birth of grandson...12 hours driving plus 3.5 hours charging (mostly at Ionity)..In every case we needed to stop too but would have appreciated 20-30 minute stops rather than 40-50 mins as would be the case with the Renault Megane e-tech, Nissan Ariya, VW ID products etc....the e-Niro size and practicality suits our (retired rural) lifestyle perfectly and the efficiency is as Jack says...the winter/summer average is 14.5 kWh/100 km ..so 4.3 miles/kWh.

@@nvk1001 Are you living in the UK? Your question is a good one but I am not sure my answer would be much help. I am from the UK but have lived in France for a long time...what all Brits who live here notice is how much noisier any car you drive is on UK roads, noticeable as soon as you drive off the ferry. When I lived in UK I was a bit of a corporate road warrior, company cars, up and down the motorways, I had some big cars..BMW 5 series, Volvo 850..that kind of thing..The Kia is as quiet as I remember those being...don’t forget that in an EV you notice road and wind noise more as there is nothing much coming from the motor...long hauls in the mountains are most interesting as there is no perceptible change in engine note as the car pulls up hill.. When the car was new it had Michelin tyres on, these days it has Hankook which the dealer here in France recommended and they seem to be quieter. The Kia e-Niro is not the quietest EV on the market so if you do high mileage then you may want to look at something else..other reviewers have said the new Niro is quieter than the old one...I don’t know but on these billiard table smooth French autroroutes ours is as quiet as any fossil car I’ve ever owned. You get 285 miles of range and max 80KW charging. The MG4 SE Long Range is £8000 cheaper and you get the same range and 50% faster max charging (120KW) and they are shipping 20,000 of them to the UK in Q4 2022. If you can live with 220 miles of range the base MG4 is fully £10,000 cheaper than the base Nero (although that is alos 80KW charging onlyI think). But in any spec the MG4 looks (and apparently drives) much better.
