4 Simple Productivity Ideas to Start the New Year

  • There are four steps in the productivity flywheel that work together to build momentum - action, time, ideas, and tools.
The Flywheel Effect was popularized by Jim Collins in his classic book "Good to Great". He describes it as a consistent process of turning the flywheel until breakthrough momentum is achieved and then easily maintained (because of sheer momentum).
If you'd like me to help start your flywheel in 2022, sign up for a free planning series and learn more about my live course starting January 10 - matt.ck.page/p...
There is a similar effect in productive work, and using the flywheel over and over again will lead to incredible momentum and confidence. Here is how it works...
Action: how you get things done
Time: how you focus your attention
    Ideas: how you organize information
Tools: what you use to do the work
When you go through this flywheel loop it gives you clarity and generates momentum and confidence the next time you start a goal. For example, if you want to start a UA-cam channel in 2022...
Action: checklist to film and edit a video
Time: blocking 2 hours on Tuesday and Thursday
Ideas: my list of ideas and video outlines
Tools: camera, editing software, thumbnail designer
You can do this for any goal or project you have! In fact it's so flexible you can use the flywheel for daily work. The GAP Method you learned on Monday is a version of the flywheel - it helps you define the week's goals, actions, and protected time.
Breakthrough productivity is not a single project, goal, or day - instead it's the consistent progress of stacking great days. Join me for the Productivity Power-Up starting January 10th, 2022 - and let's make this your most productive year ever!
My name is Matt Ragland I help creators be more productive and profitable with simple systems, deep work, and consistent output.

What step in the productivity flywheel, ie which model is the easiest for you? Which is most challenging? I'm good at action but am always working on improving my idea organization. Let me know!

The Information and Ideas step is the big challenge for me. GTD has really helped me know where to put things so I can capture ideas and information in a place that will be retrievable when needed.

Yep, you mentioned me in the video - I'm the person always looking for the next new tool to help me be more productive. After realizing I tried 9 different planners last year, it was helpful to hear you say that there is no tool that will make you more productive, it's the action, time, and ideas that lead to success. Thanks for all your helpful videos and insights! 😀

I need to work on managing my time. I think one of my focuses will be on assigning a certain amount of time to the tasks & then monitoring how long it actually takes. I also have to factor in time for interruptions. As office manager people are constantly coming to me which takes me away from the task at hand. Thanks for the tips. I’ll likely watch again.

Please do - and yes factor in those distractions while doing your best to practice shutting your door for at least an hour a day. Easier said than done, but it will help!

i'm good with actions and informations but time management can be tricky. In fact, i always do all i want to do, but no matter how hard i try to block time or planify tasks, when time comes to do them, I always change my mind and organize actions differently. I guess i dont know me enough to planify tasks the way it's ok to me to do them. For example, sometimes i planify a work task really soon, thinking "that way, it will be done, i wont have that in mind for weeks"... and then i wait for last days before the deadline to do it (and it works but i feel bad cause i havent followed my schedule). Thanks for this video who gives some keys to think about planification.

Thanks for sharing Mickael. One way to re-frame that is if work is getting done and you feel good about the process and results - perhaps your habits are better than you think?

@@MattRagland yes probably. I should accept the way I work instead of trying to force a change into something which doesn't work for me. Maybe I should try to adapt my shedule to my personnality instead of trying to adapt my personnality to an "ideal shedule". Thanks for the advice, i will think about it.

Matt, do you ever get rid of your buller journals? I have recently thrown away 5-6. I realised that the most interesting pages are habit trackers, goals and achievements, gratitude, so I kept them. As for other pages.. over the last 5-7 years I never looked back in my BuJos and was not quite interested at looking at to-do's and tasks like "buy lemons" or "finish chapter 2". At the end of the day I looked back only at results, not these small steps. So, what's your approach to this?

    • @MattRagland
      @MattRagland  2 роки тому +1

I've kept all of my old journals up to this point, but I don't think there's anything wrong with getting rid of them if you're no longer looking through them. Good question!

Been following you for awhile now and connected with this video. Going to look at the outcomes I want and adopt the tools and strategies that get me there. I think I have hoped the tools would help drive behaviour. A gym membership does not a healthy body create unless you have a plan and regularly show up!

Thanks for sharing really helpful for me. Now I am trying to focus on action, time and idea more than finding new tool

I get stuck in the tool model most often. I am definitely a person who was approaching tools with the expectation that they would be the golden bullet. Once I dropped that thinking and approached tools as filling in the gap for a specific thing, tools have become the model I am most comfortable and flexible with.
Protecting my time is the model I struggle with the most. I can list to do's all day long and write them down in a planner or calendar but somehow still end up with the same list of to do's month after month. I have found that the issue is I cannot account for schedule changes with helping family and health concerns. It's an area where I am hitting the tool model and information model to figure out an action plan that has a more flexible approach that accounts for time, energy levels, last minute changes, emergencies more often. So I do not feel so defeated when it comes to protecting my time and progressing my goals.

I didn’t completely the third model - Ideas part. What do you mean by it. Like do we have the right information on ‘how’ to execute the action (goal)??
Btw this is exactly what I was looking for. Becoming a mother the past year and trying juggle motherhood with rest of my life has been a journey and I wrote down a few goals and wasn’t able to get through most of them. The time factor is something I didnt focus much. Thank you for this. Helpful and enlightening 💞
