I didn't buy gift cards as gifts this year and I was aware of the scam. I got a Wal-Mart gift card one as a gift and used it right away and gotten scammed and I turned it into the police department in my town. I am no longer giving Wal-Mart gift cards as gifts. I bought an Amazon gift card recently to order a couple of items and it was good and every one of the gift cards from Amazon was good this year. My advice is just giving cash and it is so easy and better for everyone. You can wrap it up with candy bars of your choice and a poem. I got some restaurant gift cards for Christmas and they were good.
Saw this on the news last week - a lady in Houston Texas bought multiple Walmart gift cards totaling $800 on behalf of her Sunday school class at church (the class had donated for a whole year) to give to underprivileged families for Christmas, and scammers drained all the money from the gift cards. Sad, because they was supposed to be given to multiple needy families to give them help with Christmas. Maybe just give cash instead, I guess.
Yeah I was too late to notice when I bought gift cards for my relatives last year, never knew this was even a thing and I really think this is what happened to me and getting told by my relatives that it didn’t worked, while I was trying to do something nice for the holidays, which I rarely did for Christmas really annoyed me, these scammers have forever ruined gift cards for me. 😢
Not stupid at all. Some people are addicted to a certain store, for example Best Buy, where my son goes to for his IT stuff. He loves getting gift cards to Best Buy.
Stores should just get with some modern technology. Where I live, (example) they don't sell prepay phone cards (for added minutes) anymore. The clerk, prints out a generated slip, with the pin number not being generated until that moment. If you go to a rack full of cards, the piece of cardboard is just something you hand the clerk and they print out the pin number from the machine and activate the card. There is no pin numbers on the item itself. People are also scamming the game stores. (like EB Games). They discreetly open the box in the store, get the code from it and leave the box still there in the store. So when an innocent person buys the game, they try to use the code and it refuses it, as already used.
My former coworker is really old fashioned, does not want to do the whole online debit cards or purchasing, paying bills and such. He buys visa or major gift cards and put an amount he owes on his bills and use that gift card to pay his bills. Wierd but he's probably smart. No one has his banking info that way... 🤷♀️
its mainly the giftcard companies they got all the numbers and pins in their corrupt systems. they can and have done it and will continue easy free money.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL when buying gift cards

Give cash as gifts and so easy to do. You can wrap it up in a candy bar of your choice and a poem.
They really ought to just keep those behind locked glass doors to prevent some tampering. Employees steal too 😖
You must’ve stolen in your pass to say something like this. Disgusting
I'm still amazed at what people will do to keep from working a job. 😩
Scammers always finding new ways sucks!!

This info was posted on FB about a month ago but didn't go into details like this.

If they keep them behind the register or locked up this won’t happen
its also the giftcard companies.. won't stop
There is NO shortage of criminals!!!!
Always
Good luck trying to find an actual cashier at Walmart anymore!

Give cash. Been done with gift cards. This latest issue just nails it, gift cards are terrible ideas.
This didn’t happen 10+ years ago, gift cards were used to be gifts, nowadays the purpose of gift cards is ruined thanks to the scammers.
Gift cards suck in the first place. My wife got ripped off on 6- $50 cards.
Gift cards can be a great thing if you know how to buy them safely
Gift cards are stupid; you have to spend money at a certain place, where as cash works almost everywhere.
And what’s even worse is people even buy them on eBay for almost the full amount
Not stupid at all.

Well it used to be a wholesome thing for gifts now people just take advantage of it.
I had thought it was a problem with self-checkout but no the serial number on the card did not match the serial number on the sleeve.
Yup they can swap them
Yeah I buy my gift cards online where they send me a virtual gift card! I can't anymore....Appreciate ya!
Thanks for this, Casey!
Screw gift cards give cash!!! Then the bank and processing companies don't get your money either your friends and family do.

How bout just give cash
Question, why would I buy a Gift Card for myself?
People do. Weird I know
Rewards. Example: CVS is giving me a $10 credit if I buy a $50 gift card. Target also runs similar promos often when you purchase their gift cards.
Some retailers offer bonus cards for gift card purchase
@alanwong5239 yes , Sams club even sells them cheaper then the actual price .
