I grew up in Modesto. The idea that anything creative or inspiring can com from there kinda blows my mind. This town feels like a spot that would produce lots of nu-metal or something. But, Im realizing, there were people living interesting creative lives that produced meaningful stuff the whole world cared about and I was there just dreaming to leave so I could get involved with art. I had no idea these guys existed while I was growing up. Such a weird feeling seeing mchenry ave being shown in a documentary that I actually want to watch haha

I'm from Pennsylvania and was living in England when I first saw the band on television. Beforehand, I didn't know they were American because their sound was so close to that of the indie Brit bands. My mate told me they were from Modesto, and I was shocked! I knew the area from my grad school days at Berkeley. It was hard to explain to my English friends that the working-class culture of that area was more likely to produce a hard-rock outfit like Puddle of Mudd or Saliva than a band that sounded SO indie Brit. Only their accents give them away as Americans. That, and Jason's ever-present California-centric headgear!

20 years after middle school and this album still holds up. Electronically, lyrically and composition. Just amazing

I first saw Grandaddy open for Elliott Smith in Tempe, AZ in 2000. I didn't know anything about them going in, but I was interested enough in their music to buy a CD. The Sophtware Slump CD case came with little broken pieces off of circuit boards and tiny leaves in that little plastic area on the side when you open it. It was a pretty perfect encapsulation of the record. I also remember they gave away some keychains and this pamphlet that included their favorite recipe for salsa. Homespun to the max. I love their aesthetic both musically and lyrically and as a group of people.

I was American living in Gloucestershire when this album came out and i remember the positive reviews. When I saw them Jools Holland's Later, I not only became a big fan, but happy to see Americans doing Brit indie-style music.

Oh they played Manchester then? I was in Manchester at that weekend for the Transformer music event at the Victoria Warehouse. Used to be a student in Manc 15 years ago, good to go back. Like a month after this gig you saw Kevin Garcia died, fucking sucks, guess they not gonna be touring again then :(

I had just moved from my native Pennsylvania to California to attend grad school at UC Berkeley and had been in the Bay Area only a few weeks when the Loma Prieta quake hit. I had to vacate my apartment in El Cerrito (just a few blocks of Metallica's crib) until repairs could be made. My neighbor Jeff invited me to stay with him and his family in Turlock in the meantime. It seemed like we spent more time in Modesto. I even remember the main streets without googling them! McHenry. Briggsmore. La Loma. Coffee Road. Vintage Faire Mall. Five Corners. The big employers were all food processors: Hunt, Del Monte, Frito Lay and Gallo. I don't know why it's called "The City of Trees". The landscape is awfully bleak.
I was amazed how every town in Calfornia was a grid. All with lettered Avenues, and every one with an "Olive" Street. Everything was flat (except where there was a mountain) and everything was beige. I noted the unique local franchise eateries like Cindy's, Perko's Coffee Cup, Foster Farms, Carl's Junior, and Jack In The Box. I remembering being unhappy that there's not a single decent pretzel in the entire state and nobody had even heard of pierogis. But the Mexican food was off the muthafuggin heezie. I thought my extensive education had flattened my Pennsylvania dialect, but I'll never forget the bemused waitress at "breffast" when I asked for dippy eggs. She responded with, _"I'm sorry, sir, we only serve chicken eggs."_
I remember those morons driving through that Tule fog at 60 mph and they'd wonder _why_ there was an 80-car pileup every 10 days. And I thought it was so stupid the way California puts roads alongside railroads, making cross traffic stop in the middle of a rail crossing. No wonder there are so many youtube videos of trains smashing into tractor-trailers out west. it's not unique to California by any means, but it's not something I was used to seeing the Northeast.
The people in that area weren't what I was expectiing. It's was like a mix of... LA, the Midwest, and the Gulf Coast. It was much more egalitarian than the Northeast, with lifestyles and attitudes being somewhat uniform across all education and income levels, at least compared to the more defined strata of the East. The people were very friendly, if a bit distant, and very hospitable.
I was living in England when I first heard Grandaddy. It ws late 2000 or early 2001, on Radio 1's weekly Top 40 countdown. They were at #37 or 38 with 'The Crystal Lake". I really liked the song but I became a dedicated fan when I saw them perform on Jools Holland's late night llive show. I didn't know they were American before that and my mate Dennis told me they were from Modesto. I poked fun at that region with jokes about El Caminos, wifebeaters, and wallets on chains, but that meant nothing to a room full of Brits. Imagine my surprise when I later heard "El Caminos of the West"! I joked for years that Jason picked up on my brain waves because I was probably the only yank watching them on Jools that night!
My hometown Easton PA is 70 miles from both Manhattan and Philly and I've had numerous chances to see Grandaddy live. My brother and I are lurking in the background of the 2017 performance at the World Cafe in Philly. Jason should be thankful that we were in the back of the room near some stacked chairs, because I'd been burping all morning and you could tell I'd eaten a few sausage Shmuffins en route to Philadelphia.
Their live performances are a good as their studio work and that's not easy to come by in modern times.
