    Rudolf Nureyev dances "Florimund's solo" from The Sleeping Beauty (Tchaikovsky)
    From: VAI DVD 4288 Tchaikovsky: The Sleeping Beauty
    The Sleeping Beauty features Rudolph Nureyev as Prince Florimund and Veronica Tennant as Princess Aurora. The National Ballet of Canada production is classically sumptuous and the dancing of the principals is brilliant. This is the only available video of The Sleeping Beauty featuring Nureyev and in this production, he has added additional choreography which greatly enhances the role of Florimund. The superbly-trained corps and soloists of the National Ballet of Canada are welcome assets to the production.

    Nureyev had the courage to command freedom for his artistry and defected under dangerous circumstances. He is a beacon of freedom for all struggling artists wishing to be free from oppression. To soar across the stage with the grace of a gazelle is a gift from the totality of the universe. Nureyev danced his way into history as a valiant fighter for human rights and freedom of artistic expression. Nureyev is among several artists who sacrificed for art and triumphed.

    I was lucky enough to see Nureyev in Sleeping Beauty at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in early 1972. I still have the program to the ballet.
    I was all of 20 years old, a university student, and although I knew who Rudolf Nureyev was, I had no idea how much I would be both amazed and transported that night. It left an indelible impression on me that still endures.
    Nureyev leapt like no other danceur ever has or perhaps ever will. He took my breath away as he floated, suspended between sky and stage, shaking my sense of what I'd thought was humanly possible and not.
    I don't know if people really realize just how difficult it is to do a series of such precise movements with arms, hands, legs, feet, head and torso... to have such spatial awareness and body control that you can execute a complicated, strong "power" movement and come to a dead stop... not even the tiniest tremor of a muscle indicating what effort such control demands... and on top of that, do it with breathtaking grace, elegance, and fluidity.
    Every time I watch this -- or anything Nureyev does -- I catch myself shaking my head over and over, amazed and incredulous at what he's able to do with such apparent ease.
    The night I saw this, I learned that a man can be strong yet graceful... that a man can fill an auditorium with his presence beyond the boundaries of mere flesh and bone... that a man can be commanding yet have a delicate interface with the world.
    It was a wonderful night. Thank you so much for providing this video.

    Rudolf Nureyev had a good sense of humor, and generosity of spirit, especially regarding dance. And he may have had more passion for dancing than any other dance artist I ever knew. When one of his choreographed productions was bought for and set on the company with which I was dancing, he seemed so genuinely happy to share it with us, throughout the weeks of preparation, and to be dancing the lead. He especially reveled in the comic character parts of his role, interacting with us and creating a full, humorous yet touching portrayal that was wonderful in the moment, and really paid off later, at the end of the piece. He could get VERY upset if something wasn't being done to his standards (I'm thinking of some technical, not dance, issues, that he felt could take away from the performance, due to timing of curtains and set movements). Besides everything else, he arranged for a buffet and celebration for the dancers onstage, after the opening performance, and no one was more excited and full of joy than he was.

      AvalonMorley Thank you for posting this tribute. He was a sweet person and a VERY generous man with his time and talent who, because he had a basically gentle heart, felt he had to construct a scary persona to protect himself. But yes. Hell to pay for anyone who carelessly or inefficiently damaged his artistry. That scary persona was real and the measure of his love. He was a very great man who is often not given the credit he deserves. Thank you. Thank you.

    Not having been a Nureyev fan, I have never seen him dance solo better than this - I
    believe he choreographed it - but I kept wishing he'd slow down a bit. For an interesting comparison, watch Roberto Bolle do the same solo.

  • @rosacotton
    @rosacotton 16 років тому +1

    This is an interesting solo. I've seen other productions on video that have the prince do a solo before the vision to show his loneliness. While the music here does convey emotions of being lonely, seeking for something unknown, IMHO, the choreography does not express those feelings. Instead, it seems Nureyev's prince is just doing steps to the music -- at times fast to match the quick violin, slow steps when the music slows -- never really showing what he is feeling, just what he can do.

    • @neverlostforwords
      @neverlostforwords 6 років тому +2

      I disagree. He expresses the music, Expression does not mean one has to do slow steps to slow music and fast steps to fast music. That is a limited palette of expression. Nureyev and the choreographer have advanced complex musicality in designing and performing this dance.

    • @linhiril664
      @linhiril664 6 років тому +1

      It’s his choreography. As I said elsewhere, he is not dancing to the music but with it.

    • @juanjosefarina
      @juanjosefarina 5 років тому +1

      @@neverlostforwords choreography is for dancing... And dancing, at least classically, should be done to the music, in a precise way. One could develop a dramatic scene moving in a "dancy" way over the music, maybe even making a contrast between one and the other... But I don't think that is in anyway classical. Feuillet, Rameau, Saint-León, Zorn and many other geniuses of classical ballet wouldn't approve, they wrote about how dancing should correspond and picture the music itself. Said that, Nureyev loved being over the music, he wanted choreography to be the main thing, and music in second, so sometimes there is a contrast between the moves and the music heard... I don't like him as a choreographer, but it's a good exercise of analysis.
