  • Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the Director of the Imperial Theatres, was the initiator of The Sleeping Beauty ballet production and the landmark encounter between Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Marius Petipa. He wrote the libretto, created the costumes and became the co-author of the miracle born by the genius of two great masters in 1890. In the production, it was as if Vsevolozhsky, a brilliant connoisseur and enthusiast of Louis XIV, opened a window into his favourite period creating a feeling of an exuberant, almost masquerade-like extravaganza: in one scene, like at balls in Versailles, could come together ultramarine, lilac, scarlet and emerald costumes.
The pathos of respect for the French Golden Age (not just Aurora but the entire world woke up under the Sun King) was fundamental to the idea behind The Sleeping Beauty and determined the atmosphere of the ballet extravaganza. But, unfortunately, in the 20th century, the production got a makeover, was adapted to the tastes of different times.
After long decades of oblivion, the image of the production of the times of Petipa returned to the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in 1999. The 1890 stage design was revived based on the sketches by Vsevolozhsky and the premiere decorative artists, while the choreographer Sergei Vikharev restored the structure of Marius Petipa’s creation drawing on the recordings of the ballet made in the early 20th century - with all the splendour of the spectacle, the ceremonious metering of dance and pantomime, and the atmosphere of celebration. And today the 21st century audience has the opportunity to see in action on stage the luxurious gesamtkunstwerk which in its day inspired Alexandre Benoi to venture Russian Seasons.

Maurice Béjart once told her, that if they had met earlier, ballet of XX Century would be completely different (Plisetskaya would perform in Béjart’s ballet, famous Bolero by Ravel when she turned 50). Perhaps, what he meant was his baby, his famous company that carried its name for a very long time, Ballet of the 20th Century (currently, The Béjart Ballet Lausanne). It greatly influenced the growth of contemporary ballet. But maybe, he thought of a bigger picture. Nevertheless, among those, who admired Plisetskaya’s dance, who analyzed it, examined the nature of her art work and art alliance with Béjart that emerged in their matured years, there will be plenty of most loyal fans and credible professional ballet lovers who are confident that without Plisetskaya’s phenomena, ballet of the past century would be impossible to imagine. Violating canons, she claimed for new omens and contemporary style in classical ballet, and she always, since childhood and especially in her matured years, was striving to create auteur theatre, besides she had such a faithful associate, Rodion Shchedrin, her husband and music author of her ballets. Her other distinction was metaphorical sound and freedom as leading motif. Plisetskaya herself was saying that she never wanted to dance just for the sake of it, she needed a story. Over the years - more of a parable. However, any tale she consolidated to a highest level.

She is definitely there technically. I’m not sure if she’s there in terms of acting yet, but I’m sure it’ll be soon!

Besides the beautiful technique, I was really impressed with artistry in your portrayal of the princess dancing with potential suitors. Specifically, you looked like it was all happening to you for the first time, being approached by suitors, delighted at the gift of a rose... so often the demanding steps cause the performance of this scene to appear studied, not a dance expressing all the emotions of a birthday party for a 16 year old surrounded by handsome suitors.
To be honest I have been watching several videos of this young ballerina over the past few months and at times I felt her amazing physical facility overshadowed her artistry and musicality. But in this performance, wow, she just blew me away. Her joy in the dance came across even over the tiny screen of my phone and her movements were so expressive. I love her way of bringing arms up to 3rd position (over he head) and bending slightly to the side while raising her chin, the coordination and largeness of the movement is so memorable. (For example, at 2:11-2:12). This is such a challenging pas de duex. It is impressive to see such a young ballerina execute it with such maturity. Her teachers must be proud.

You said it all, and much better than I could. Such an impressive performance by Masha, as well as her glorious very grand suitors. Thank you for posting!

@@levondelite4072 thanks for the comment! I am wondering if she was particularly inspired bc the performance is in honor of the great Maya P. She definitely seems particularly genuine and mature in this performance, like she is in some way channeling the sparkling precision and joy of Maya and expressing her own version!

      You're absolutely right!
I think that she's much more "in the role" in this particular ballet because Aurora represents youth, grace, innocence and all these things that apply to a young girl like Masha.
The company is counting much on her and they give her plenty of opportunities even in more mature roles (like Bayadere or contemporary choreographies). Even if she's not yet so much in the mentality of those roles, it's very pleasing that she thrives in fresh roles like this!

I also enjoy this video and want to mention not only the dance (wonderful) - but that the performance of Maria brings impression that I believe in this scene with suitors. She is polite with all, a little bit playful as she is a young girl but decent (as she is the princess). I really believe in this scene, well done, Maria. Suitors are also grand and good actors.

I have been waiting for this since I first saw Maria dance. I have seen ALL the greats, most live and the rest on video dance Aurora and Maria is going to be one for the ages.Still a little work here and there but I cannot imagine a more promising debut, especially considering her age!!!! As usual, I could not take my eyes off those arms and wrists. Then there is the beautifully stretched-high grand developpes and the amplitudinous grand battements en rond and finally the last balances en pointe, making beautiful fifth position crowns. No sweat! Not a wobble, not even a quiver!!! She stayed on the music but I do wish she would have prolonged the last one, for the effect (let them know you can stay balanced seemingly forever). But I jumped to my feet applauding. So she does not yet the joyful charisma and coquettish charm that Margo portrayed but then Maria is closer to 16 than Margo was for most of her career dancing this role. I can't see how they cannot promote her to Principal in a year two. The great Alla Sizova is looking down from above very proudly.

It is always a joy to watch you dance with your impeccable technique and grace, but when you do it in such a demanding part as this Rose Adagio, it is plain to see that you are an accomplished artist and an extraordinary ballerina; we see line, style, poise and above all control. What a beautiful way of expressing your appreciation for the great Maya. Bravissimo Maria!

Her dancing is incredible! I am not at all a ballet expert, just love watching it. I have a question for someone who knows better than me; When she is on both feet, is her back a bit arched, causing her to be slightly sway backed? Or is it just the angle of the tutu and things like that?
