We make popcorn in the microwave - I put 1/3 cup kernels in a brown paper bag, fold the top down lightly, and microwave for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes and put into a bowl. I then add a little melted butter and pink Himalayan salt. My husband likes to add sour cream and onion popcorn seasoning but I like mine plain. Don't use the paper bag more than once (it goes into the box to be used in the wood stove ) because if you try to use it in the microwave again your popcorn will burn. Ask me how I know. We buy very large bags of kernels from a Mennonite store and put it into smaller plastic bags and store in the freezer to keep it fresh.

OMG: Speaking of snack foods, the nearest Sam's Club is about 45-minutes away. We have a membership, but BJ's is right around the lake. t (although not as good). We were getting rough cut lumber near the Sam's and decided to go in, this was during 'Canuary' a couple years ago. Walking in, and walking, and walking.....past aisle after aisle of junk. I said to my husband, "Where is the real food?" And these are big, big aisles. They want you to load up on that crap before you get to the fruit and vegetables.

@@firehorsewoman414 Food pantries are in fact at the mercy of the donors. Often large companies will offer a pallet of turkeys for Thanksgiving but they won't pay the shipping. Sometimes but rarely a trucker with space in a refrigerated truck will pick up and drive the goods to another state but only if it's on his way. Catch as catch can unfortunately.

I have steadily over the years had more trouble controlling my blood sugar. It got to the point I was checking my blood sugar manually 20+ times a day. I talked to my doctor about a continuous monitor and he agreed it was a perfect option to help me keep track of my sugar and of scary blood sugar drops. He said 'but your insurance won't pay for it ($800+ a month) because you aren't diabetic'. I said so if I eat anything I want and let my blood sugar get so out of control I'm a diabetic, I can get insulin and a monitor for almost free. He said 'Sadly, yes'. I called my insurance; same response. Talked to my pharmacist; same thing. I told all of them not happening; I will control it with diet as long as it's humanly possible. I eat small amounts 5 times a day and check at least once a day on rising or if I feel it dropping rapidly. Companies don't make money off of healthy people.

I made homemade jello from fruit juice and plain gelatin. I can't believe the prices of junk food snacks! It's incredibly high, especially potato chips.

Oh, heck yeah my snacking has changed! Many now have MSG, which I am allergic to, just to enhance the flavor since they are now using inferior ingredients. Dollar Tree corn chips are better than Fritos without MSG.
The price of cookies and the small number are simply not worth it. Kroger vanilla are superior to Nilla and their lemon wafers are wonderful but I was getting them for .79 two years ago and they are 2.79 now. They are much lower than others, but it's the principle of the thing. Lorna Doones,Nonni's and Pepperidge Farm are not in the budget, but they have gone down in quality, too.
NUTS are my snacks of choice now.

The absurd increase in cost of snacks and fast food these last few years has really improved my diet 😂 I learned how to cook meals at home and hardly buy snacks anymore. Having a variety of freezer meals ready to go definitely helps when you're short on time or motivation. I do miss having BBQ chips with my PB&J sandwich, but cannot justify spending 30% more for something that neither benefits my health nor budget, nor keeps me full. The report you read makes no sense to me when they mention buying the bulk, individual packages to help cut prices. The unit cost per ounce for those tiny bags of air is likely 300% more expensive than the family sized bag. The math ain't mathing. I also managed to find a twenty five pound bag of popcorn at a great price last year and am slowly chipping away at it.

I don't really buy snacks anymore, except popcorn. The kind you pop in a popcorn machine. I use cheese powder that is clean. Or just butter and salt. But it is a once a month thing. I make my own tortilla chips and pico de gallo and we have that once a week. But we always have some kind of protein with it. We keep sliced cucumbers, carrots, and celery sticks in the fridge with a couple different dressings and some chevre cheese or port salut to spread on the cucumbers or in the celery. We keep boiled eggs ready and have protein sticks. Nice snacks that will fill you up and not keep you craving more carbs. We just don't buy chips and the like anymore. Too expensive and they don't taste like they used to.

Dollar General is actually ripping people off. John Oliver did a good show on them.
I have Bulletproof Coffee in the morning. I hardly ever go out of eat anymore. Also, since Canuary I have been feeding my cats ugly chicken and other meats when it's on sale. My local grocery store has the 4 lb bags of chicken for $6 frequently so I will pressure can a batch.

We used to buy chips for a side at birthday parties or cookouts as a cheap filler. The chip bags are so small and expensive, you need 2-3 bags. Now it’s cheaper to buy fruit and make a fruit bowl as a side. Usually we just do grapes, blueberries and mandarin orange wedges.

I love popcorn, always have. My snacks are very rarely sweet because I don’t really care for sugar but I like savory. Air popped popcorn with a little butter and lemon pepper is amazing.

Can I also recommend popping sorghum. I find it very tasty & its healthy! As a celiac its gluten free too.
My favorite way to eat both is with butter and grated Parmigiano

Great advice! One of the reasons I have a deep fryer is because I like chips - I use corn tortillas (you will never want a Doritos again if you get the right seasoning happening), I use all sorts of root vegetables the options are endless. I figure if I am doing it homemade with great real ingredients it''s better for you. 🥂

I have 3 granddaughters (9-6-3), and boy they love their snacks. I've had to adjust my snack buying and now bake cookies, pop popcorn, and always fresh fruit if it's not too pricey. I myself am on a high salt diet and must carry extra salty pretzels everywhere I go. Guess I'm blessed with very low BP cause I do like salt. GREAT SUGGESTIONS LEISA

For my husband’s lunches, I make my own chip bags by filling snack size bags with chips he likes that I buy in bulk. The same with cookies. Is there a way to make a large serving of popcorn that I can store to snack on instead of having to take down the popcorn maker or dirtying the microwave popper when I want a snack and doesn’t go stale fast?

I can't close my eyes to all the crazy ingredients in them. I'll pop popcorn and make it salty or sweet with real ingredients. I'll make muffins in many flavors by scratch. Cakes the same. Crackers, ditto. Homemade granola with real healthy fruits and nuts. If I'm craving chocolate? Pull out the cocoa powder and whip up a batch of fudge, or syrup. Stay tuned when you purchase snacks. Look at the ingredients on the back. Check for Made with bio engineered ingredients too. Stay safe, stay healthy, and Peaceful.

Great video and Thank you for all the time you put into the research to teach and inspire us. Yes the snacks here in Vermont are horribly expensive. I wish we had an Azure drop near us. The nearest one is 3 hours away, one way. That's 6 hours and on my limited income I just can't do a bunch of bulk buying and then the drive on top of that expense. God Bless

Hi Leisa, I have not been snacking much lately. I tried some potato chips tonight but it was not as good as I remembered. Kinda disappointing. I ended up getting 12 more jars of meat over the weekend. This week my local grocery store has whole chickens on sale for $.99/pound and I think that I'm going to turn them into chicken vegetable soup that I can put either noodles, chopped spaghetti, or rice with once I open the jars. It'll be kind of fun.
