The transformation of Larry Hagman from character Tony Nelson to JR Ewing was amazing. He went from a sitcom wimp to a conniving Texas oil man in short order. Whoever made the decision to cast him for the part deserves the same plaudits as the person who cast Peter Falk as Columbo.
The story goes, Hagman had the choice of two TV series, "The Waverly Wonders", which I remembered, and Dallas, so it was an eeny meeny miny mo, choice.
Yes, I also get a kick of out JR! He has a Texan version of the coward/conman Foghorn Leghorn charm and humor. A fantastic iconic role portrayed by a fantastic durable experienced actor!
And I read somewhere that Larry Hagman was gonna leave the show and there were a few other actors who were up for the role had he left. Can’t think of them all but I did read actors Robert Colbert and Robert Culp.
@@a.b.sproductionsllc I knew about Robert Culp, if he were to get the role they were going to write a story in which J.R gets shot in the face and has plastic surgery thus his Robert Culp appearance.
JR is my favorite tv villain of all time. I became hooked on this show a few years back after watching a couple of episodes from season 2. I loved to watch JR bribe, blackmail, and wheel and deal. Now I understand what the fuss was about when this show was on in primetime.
Exactamundo, those people who keeps saying Tony Soprano was the first TV antihero gave me a chuckle, lmao. JR was and is the one and only and the original antihero and a true badass to boot. Don't need no Prozac or shrinks to feel good either, crushing his opponents is what gave JR a high.
Yep.. This shows why it's impossible to imagine anyone else playing this character other than Larry Hagman. The casual way he destroys this little bug (as he sees him) is simply entertaining.. Though you wouldn't believe it there was great friendship among the cast. When Larry Hagman discovered that his fellow cast weren't being offered the same pay as he was he went on strike. Also when he was dying Linda Evans visited him every day.

Its kind of amazing that JR Ewing is the right wing Republican oil guy, but in REALITY Larry Hagman is a staunch Democrat, was against George W Bush, and is an alternative energy guy. So he is pretty much a polar opposite.
Whenever he was the bumbling fumbling Major Nelson on "I Dream of Jeannie", his popularity with women was minimal at best. When he became Jr Ewing on Dallas, his popularity with the female persuasion went through the ceiling. Why is that?
A little something from Batman here.. “if your gotta go, go with a smile” and JR certainly dose that even after he has torched some ones career. 😆 “running like leanings” 😆 pure gold. Then came the smile at the end.. beautiful.. 😂
