  • I have seen many comments in regard to Eddie being the strongest man ever so thought I'd look at this from an objective point of view and compare Eddie Hall against the Super Heavyweight All Time Record holder powerlifter Daniel Bell.

You seem to be ignorant of Paul Anderson..... Look him up if you want to know the REAL Strongest man of all times.
For the strongest Giant of all times --- Angus McAskill of Canada 1860's -- 7' 10" and 500 lbs.... natural giant...not tumor giant.
The injury leading to Angus' death ought to convince you he was the strongest man ever recorded. He lifted a 2600 lbs Ship's Anchor off the ground , then was injured as he dropped it. One of the massive flanges struck him , I think, in the head,.... He died of this injury a couple of years later.
Angus worked as a police officer. He was often seen carrying 2 criminals under his arms like children and hauling them off to the station.
He also was seen actually jogging down the streets of Montreal with 2 filled barrels of beer under his arms. These weighted 300lbs each. And he was just walking around with them like luggage.

So many analist seems to forget that doing 345kg/765lbs for 8 reps so 943lbs/428kg hypothetical Squat 1RM on a wobbly 8 foots bar without any sleeves or wraps is something else than doing the 1RM on a conventional powerlifting bar with a belt and some equipment, spot and real preparation.
585lbs/265lbs x 6 bench without any sleeves, wraps, belt or spot on an easy set of paused reps* So 300kg/660lbs under the very same condition would equal to a far heavier amount of weight for both lifts. Doing completely raw deadlifts isn't a requirement in order to win World's Strongest Man contest and therefore, Eddie didn't need to really set any World Record without these straps, but clearly was the strongest deadlifter of all time of all categories. Eddie Hall also almost beat Big Z's Log Press World Record with an attempt of pushing 507lbs/230kg with a strict form while coming back from a very recent injury of tearing many ligaments in one of his legs, making it impossible to lock out the weights despite the fact that he lifted it twice. He also easily destroyed the Axle Press World Record at 216kg/476lbs with a completely strict form without any *allowed* momentum in his last lift. Also the only man on earth to complete The mythical Death by Deadlift Pyramid Set in which he lifted from 60kg/135lbs to 428kg/945lbs to 60kg/135lbs all over again in a single set. First and youngest man to ever Deadlift The ''Impossible'' 500Kg at 28 years old in 2016 by raising the bar of at least 40kg on the previous world record's holder (And not 1kg, 4 years later). Pushed 90kg/200lbs dumbbells in shoulder presses for 6 confortable reps, pushed 100kg/220lbs dumbbells in chest press for easy inclined sets without any equipments. Just in case someone would say Eddie peaked while some others did not, just don't forget he was 28 years old when he reached that level, strongmen usually peak at 32-35 years old, he slowed down when he was on top of his game and he decided to retire, to fully live his life with his family. We never know what level he could've reached if he continued to get stronger. We call him The Beast for good reasons.

Yeah, it's insane how much he could probably have done if he had organised it in that way instead of for winning WSM. You are right, especially about the bad luck he had with the log. And how strong he was at all those lifts throughout his strongman career. Being one of or the best at overhead of different kinds, deadlift, bench, and having a really really good squat too, all at once, really qualifies him for strongest ever statically. That 500 kg deadlift, suit, straps and all, was fantastic. What a hero.

I would say Eddie Hall is the strongest man that ever lived (sorry Kaz, you definitely were the strongest to have ever lived at the time when you said it, and took many years for anyone to meet let alone beat that)
When you boil down “who is stronger” it’s the one that can lift more weight. And overall no one can do that better overall than Eddie. His raw power is insane. Has the world record in the axle, did it as a strict press even though he could have used leg drive, and made it look easy.
Even Big Z can’t do that. Big Z does have Eddie with the record on the log, but Ed came damn close. Power wasn’t the issue, it was technique and the ankle that kept Ed from breaking the log record. Take the legs out of the equation (such as while doing an incline log press Glenn Ross used to dominate) and no one would touch Eddie.
Love him or hate him Ed’s ability to strict press is legendary, and will be talked about for years. Only a few men over the years have had pure pressing power like that. Kaz, Glenn Ross, are some that come to mind, both of which dominated overhead in their day
Then you factor in how powerful Ed is in pretty much everything else too. Amazing deadlift (Big Loz rates Eddie as the best deadlifter of all time, as while Thor beat Ed by 1kg, Ed quite handily beat Thor when in competition. Loz rates when Ed won the deadlift in the 2017 WSM final the most impressive deadlift ever. Apologies if I forget the exact number I think it was 472.5kg or something very near that)
Even after quite a few events already under Ed came in to the deadlift and lifted that winning weight and dare I say made it look easy. Most that know the sport well have said by that performance Ed showed in that winning pull that he more than likely could have done over 500kg on that day if he was fresh.
Ed may not be the absolute best strongman ever (that goes to Big Z)
But in terms of overall raw static strength, that’s Eddie Hall

    • @StrengthUniverse
      @StrengthUniverse  3 роки тому +38

Your spot on with the 472.5kg deadlift. I agree with all that you've said. I think a deadlift battle between a 2017 Eddie and early 2020 Hafthor would have been awesome to see.

    • @gabrielpichorim8191

The thing with the axel is that it is not a very important event in strongman. There are 20 log competitions for every one max weight axel comp. Big Z in 2010 had a 215kg axel and 210kg log, he never had the chance to try the axel for max again in 6 years until his pec tear, but his logs went up 18 kg in the mean time as well as his axel for reps. Both Eddie and Z numbers on the axel are not representative of their strength, both man could get at least 220+ kg if they had their chances. On top of that, some times it is not even an proper axel, just a olympic barbell or a steel rod with gloves on the sides like on 2018 WSM finals. I think this is unfortunate since the axel is a very impressive event.

    • @dragon81heart
      @dragon81heart 3 роки тому +10

@@gabrielpichorim8191 I know what you mean, was just using the log/axle as an example.
I think the way they lift it is a good showing of actual strength though.
A strict press with no leg drive takes quite a bit more strength than one with leg drive. Ed hardly ever used leg drive.
Eddie pressed in very much the same way that Kaz and Glenn Ross did. Little to no technical advantage, instead just using brute strength and power to lift and press. More difficult, but arguably more impressive. And what make that even more impressive yet is that Kaz, Ross, and Hall were very rarely ever matched let alone beaten in an overhead pressing event.
Z doesn’t use a lot of leg drive, but he still does use some, and that “pop” on the bottom really does make a huge difference. And Z’s technique is absolutely flawless, which helps him as well. Very very few men possess the insane power to strict press these huge weights, hence why it’s a rare sight. And why when we do see someone strict press like Kaz, Ross, and Hall it puts our jaws to the floor.
Now I would say Z is a better log presser than Hall. Z is in my opinion the best ever (to date) at the log.
But Eddie is stronger at pressing.
From a seated position I don’t think there is anyone that would be able to keep up with Eddie. Maybe Glenn Ross in his prime could have been close.
But no one today has that insane raw power Eddie had.
Not only in the shoulders, but at pretty much any static event.
Eddie may not have been the fastest, or the most athletic compared to some others. And his reliance on his raw power at times came back to bite him.
But when it came to strength...real honest to goodness strength and power, Eddie Hall was the epitome of it.
When he won WSM, there was no doubt that he really was the strongest man in the world.
(Something that cant always be said with some other winners, and that kind of bugs me. When a person is called “worlds strongest man” you would expect him to be exactly that. But with some, even greats like MVM and Mariuz, they weren’t the strongest. Hell they weren’t even the strongest in that competition. So I like it when they go to a more power related final rather than fitness and speed. Idk, just a pet peeve of mine lol)

I honestly think Eddie could've done a 1250kg total in his prime. 450/325/475+
Squat: Eddie has never really done max weight or reps on squat, that 345x8 was easy, without sleves, not peaked, on a special 8ft wobbly bar.
Bench: Again, he did not even peak or really did a bench cycle and pressed 265x6 paused, without a liftoff or spotter.
Deadlift. This really is the big X factor. I don't think he could pull the 500 in a full meet, regardless of grip. But i do think he could break the 460 WR on strenght without a problem. It really comes down to how much he could train his grip. But knowing Eddie Hall, when het sets his mind to it he will get it done. I think he would start pulling hookgrip and honestly not care if he broke a thumb on the last deadlift.

I disaggree on some points like he squatted that without belt and clearly has more reps in him with wobble bar. His 1 rep max would be more than what you stated. His deadlift will be 460kg with some work on his grip strength like doing one hand deadlifts. His bench would be what i think Eddie stated 330-335kg if he specifically trains for it. But i know you have to decrease those numbers because then some will call you his fanboy but its a fact. His bench was also on wobble bar and that makes it very unstable specially at that high weight.

Given Eddie's insane grip strength I wouldn't be surprised if he could pull 445kg without straps but otherwise I agree with this analysis, Eddie Hall in all likelihood could have been the best overall power lifter on the planet, and even with your somewhat lower estimate for a strapless dead lift this is still the case, really crazy when you think about it.

It would be amazing to see what Eddie could do if he really put his mind to powerlifting, getting used to how strict the rules are, how many lifts are much heavier due to pauses, no momentum and so on. What's shown in the video is when Hall has specialized within that muscle group. Being extremely strong in all events at the same time is very difficult, and I honestly think he maxed out his frame for the 500 kg WR deadlift - which may be reflected in how he got serious head trauma from it, whereas for Hafthor it was like any other heavy lift. These things are all just speculation. And if you start speculating, you must also ask yourself how the likes of Big Z or Hafthor would do if they put their minds and training just into powerlifting.
Hafthor for many years had a completely different strategy in strongman than Eddie did. He focused much more on mobility and longevity. What if he switched up his training program and the goal was just to be at his peak for 1-2 years, then back off? Which is pretty much what he did for the deadlift. A few months of serious prep, and easily blew it out of the park. It looked easy, especially in comparison to Eddie's lift. He probably had another 10-20 kg in him, atleast. If you gave that man 2-3 years to just do powerlifting, he would in my speculative opinion most likely beat Eddie. He's so tall and wide and his body is better suited to carry more muscles. I think many of the same arguments go for Big Z, or a few other strongmen.
So at the end of the day, there's no question that Eddie is a static monster, but it's VERY speculative. There's a million variables that come into play, and like I said, many of Eddie's records shown in the video are many years apart. If you apply the same logic to powerlifters, i.e taking their PR's over a 10 year period for each lift, their overalls are much higher.

      2. Max log lift ( strongman world record 228 KG)
      3. Log lift for reps ( strongman world record at 205 KG x 4 )

      5. Dumbell press overhead 124 KG x 4 ( Eddie only managed 1 rep)

      1 .Deadlift ( 500 KG )
      2. Max axle ( world record 216 KG)
      3. Deficit deadlift ( 445 KG )

@@roman11235813 When Eddie was at peak strength in 2017 he squatted 320kg x15, which works out to 480 kg for a max. In 2014, his 329kg x 14 works out to 482.5 kg for a max. So Eddies' peak squat hovered around 480 kg. Z did 15 at 329 kg which works out to 493.5 kg max.
Can't compare bench as it's not a static test in Strongman.
Z did 442 kg in the deficit deadlift at WSM 2011 vs Eddie 445 kg at WSM 2O16.
Z did 524 kg in hummer tires at ASC 2014 vs Eddie 505 kg at ASC 2015.
Z usually got an average carryover of 63 kg to hummer tires from the deficit Deadlift setup at WSM.
      2011
      Z - 442 kg on deficit globes
      Z - 505 kg on hummer tires
      2012
      Z - 360 kg x 8 on deficit deadlift (predicted max 447 kg)
      Z - 507 kg on hummer tires
      2015
      Z - 370 kg x 5 on deficit globes (predicted max 416 kg)
      Z - 482 kg on hummer tires
Therefore in 2014, his max DL on the deficit set-up would likely hover around 458-464 kg - an average of 460 kg.
Given lifters seem to get 15-20 kg from the deficit set up to a standard deadlift bar. Shaw (445 kg WSM'16 - 463 kg ASC'16) Hall (445 kg WSM'16 - 465 kg ASC'16) Thor (420 kg WSM'16 - 443 kg ASC'16). Therefore Z in Arnold Strongman Classic 2014 shape would likely have been capable of 475 - 480 kg raw on an elephant bar.
In 2010, Zydrunas strict pressed 208 kg x 2 on Apollon's Axle with spades in the tank at the ASC - arguably in his top 5 greatest feats.

I’m going to open with, Eddie Hall would smoke a 1000 pound squat, 650 bench, and 1000 pound dead.
He would need to train for two months for a little loading and technique and then absolutely wreck it. I think a 1200kg total would be very fair if not a little conservative.
Calculations in this video of his bench and squat don’t factor in the 8’ wobble bar, not maxing the rep counts, and no belt. Your numbers are wildly low, but I get it because you’re being conservative based on things you could quantify.
Maybe there is a comparison on wobble versus standard bar weights and you could take his RPE into account to guess his true rep range to get a more scientific “guess”.

Eddie pulled 420kg deadlift and 280kg bench in a powerlifting meet iirc around the time win wsm.

Hi Dante, The deadlift was done with figure 8 straps which are not permitted in powerlifting and the bench press would also never pass in a real competition because he didn't pause at the bottom and lifted his foot off the floor.

No. He's incredibly strong, but not a league above the rest. Thor has pulled a heavier deadlift and soon the likes of Pavlo will pull even more. Biby has done a heavier axle. Z was always a stronger squatter. Eddie was unbelievably strong, but not in a league of his own.

@@thisguyagain24 he beat the previous record by 35kg. When Eddie pulled 500, he shared the record prior to that with Jerry and Benni at 465kg. I'm not denying for a second that Eddie was unbelievably strong, I'm just saying that despite how impressive his 500kg was, he's not a league above everyone else. Soon others will lift 505. Eddie will always be remembered as the man who made 500 possible, but that doesn't mean he's the only one capable.

thor couldn't grip a 430 kg deadlift and his grip strength was way better than Eddie's. He literally won a grip event in WSM that year and only managed to grip 410 on a bar. It would be more realistic to assume Eddie's raw deadlift to be around 380

Zydrunas is stronger in the squat than eddie was at his peak. These two comparisons are much better.
    Peak Eddie: ua-cam.com/video/DOQfU9Ws_PE/v-deo.html
Zydrunas doing more weight easier. ua-cam.com/video/JOsEauCk9uc/v-deo.html

Well eddie never competed so we will never now, but thor who is prob the biggest and one of the strongest wsm of all time did and he couldnt beat the raw record in wraps, btw thors biggest raw deadlift is 410 and hes nr1 deadlifter in strongman. People tend to underestimate powerlifting as a sport, especially when comparing it to strongman

And Eddie doesn’t prioritize powerlifting. Ofc he does heavy bench, squat, and deadlift but he rarely does singles and definitely doesn’t focus 100% of his time to those. If he did he’d break the total by even more.

I don't understand why did you say strongest man to ever live if you're going to take powerlifting conventions? Would that not mean strongest powerlifter that ever lived should be the title??? Also the whole may not use straps in powerlifting to me isn't an indication of one's strength. Your back still does ALL the work at lifting a weight whether your hands can hold it or not. The entire point of deadlift is to see how much one's back can lift, if a person without hands had a 430 lift with some special way of tying it to him would he not be allowed to have it displayed as his feat of strength?

    • @StrengthUniverse
      @StrengthUniverse  2 роки тому

But that's not what the title says, it is a question: "Is ******** the strongest man whoever lived, statically?"

    • @Andremetheartist
      @Andremetheartist 2 роки тому

@@StrengthUniverse so my question is then if you want to test a hypothesis which is based off a question an answer whatever you want it to be; do you put the subject in the realm of the system in question (strongest statically = strongman) you test or do you take him to a completely different test zone (powerlifting) and expect the results to be conclusive? (Conventions of powerlifting and strongman being so different that neither would function in the others' sport if you test them based SOLELY on their performance in their respective fields). If I wanted to test is Muhammed a great boxer? And I phrase it as a question does that mean looking at his MMA career is a great way to test it?
