Good old 1.0. I played a summoner necro as my very first character. Went up against Andariel with my little army of skeletons. Two poison spray attacks later, I had no skeletons, and was left running around the pool while whittling her down with level 3 teeth. I don't recall how long it took to kill her, but it was a very long time indeed.

I remember in this version, as a wee lad, I beat the game at level 30, with a necro who had horrific skill distribution (one in everything). I killed diablo with a great maul and it took me like 2 hours. No idea how I had that level of patience.

Games all took a long time back then and there weren't that many games, so it was logical to spend more time on a single game. It was a different time with different rewards.

@@stylis666 True, I miss those times when we could just focus on one game and thoroughly enjoy it. There still are some out there like the Souls series, but for the most part it's an era long gone in gaming

    • @stylis666

@@mikehawk8984 I do too and I sometimes try and revisit the FInal Fantasy series, but I honestly don't have the time or patience anymore. But I'll always have Diablo II, where I can just play single player with Plugy and now Cactus, which is AMAZING by the way, and spend as much or as little time as I have to spare and with the ridiculous amount of goals I have, I'll be long dead before I get bored with it.
But yeah, times change and nostalgia is a real thing. I miss sitting in my room for days with nothing but any one Final Fantasy game I was playing at the time and I really miss getting a lvl 17 character in classic geared with set items and shizzle to PK multiple lvl 20+ characters in a game that were totally not built to fight but were overly confident because of their level advantage and they could team up :) And then stealing all their gold so they have to farm to even buy potions and scrolls :p Ah, the memories :D Those days are gone and no matter how much fun I have and no matter how much I think it's a good thing that things change, I will always think back to those days with melancholy and feel lucky that I was there to see computers progress and the internet gain popularity and culture and pop culture change.
Before the NES and PS1 I had a Commodore 64 with hundreds of cracked games, a lot of which are still amazing and I sometimes play them on an emulator or just play the music from my favourite games.
Even if games stopped altogether, I'll still have a ridiculously large pool of fond memories of growing up with games and computers. And I pretty much stopped with trying new games. They're too expensive and too complex for me to even want to figure it out.
In that regard, a lot of games these days have the same appeal as games back then, just in a different way. But I think that having grown up with Diablo II makes every other game meh. Diablo II has it all, the atmosphere, the music, the characters, the NPS's, the near perfect loot table that no game has ever come close to, the skills, the stats and I could go on for hours about the stats on items and how they're classed and divided over items and have small numbers that make huge differences in survivability and playability of a character, like fhr to name just one of many. What other game has that in a way that makes such a huge impact on how controlling a character feels? I think we're just spoiled with having lived the glory days of possibly the best arpg of all times.

Oh man I remember trying to kill Diablo for the first time as a kid. It took me about an hour to get him to half HP, then I had to go to bed and paused and alt-tabbed. I told my entire family to not turn off the computer because I needed to defeat Diablo after getting home from school the next day. Cut to 18 hours later, my mom and brother picked me up from school; they looked at me with sadness in their eyes and said..."I'm sorry but there was a power cut..."
      Pretty sure I started crying.

So, i remember this version. Lord De Seis was by far the most lethal monster in this version of the game. For one, he had thief which stole your potions. Second, he had Iron Maiden. If you were a whirlwind barb, the De Seis fight was frustrating because when you activated whirlwind, your belt locks. But at the same time, De Seis would try and steal a potion from the belt. This would result in the game crashing. Chaos was no joke back then.

Remember back in the days, barb find potion is useful, sorc warmth is essential. I think boss group is just for hunt item as magical item is useful and they dropped it while normal exp. That's probably why remember last time play is go around all and whack every monster instead of find boss group to fight, it's probably to level. Back when rare drop is extremely hype and set and unique is a WOW. That's why back then the gem are so precious, the drop rate is very low, i still remember how hype i m when TCP with friend reached hell and he gave me perfect gem.

I love the cute questions in chat.
    "Does cold cancel poison?"
As a matter of fact, if it's enough cold damage, it will cancel poison. If you're poisoned and you WW into a lightning+fire enchanted monster, that will also guaranteed cancel poison. Fun fact. WW-ing with Iron Maiden will also cancel poison. Not a lot of people know that. One thing that all of those things won't cancel is the WW itself. That will finish no matter how dead you are :p

    • @Opomax
      @Opomax 4 роки тому

Remember how awful classic was for hardcore physical units? chaos sanctuary runs are just so insanely dangerous, you can delete cold, poison, iron maiden curse, all your items and become a dark robed see through avatar very quickly.
Last time I played a few years back I played hardcore classic with a hammerdin, got to level 58 in act 3 hell, and had to stop playing for a week thanks to a corpse pop fire enchanted unique enemy. The 100-0. HP in one pop when he died sucked. Believe it was at the stone gate to lower kurast. Didn’t make the same mistake when I went back and managed to get to close to level 70 and finished hell Diablo many times.

    • @stylis666
      @stylis666 4 роки тому

@@Opomax Yeah, and I never figured out how, I think it's Berserk where 100% of your physical damage is converted into magic and then you don't get damage from Iron Maiden and sometimes you do. How does that work? XD Online you could at least just BO and hop. It's also very relaxing to just follow the crowd and be an idiot without too many people minding you're being an idiot because you got BO :) Didn't much like that on hardcore though. TPPK was a killer and I was never the clan type.
It's only since recent years that I play more single player and hardcore. The game got somewhat less deadly, all though I did murder a level forty something paladin in nightmare Durance of Hate. Got surrounded by dolls in a corner like a dumbass and figured, I got pots, I'll tele, how much damage do they do anyway if I don't make them explode? Yeah, well. Turns out it's enough XD I didn't have time for pots or tele and I learned to not think but hit escape instead.
I got a sorc killed with a classic fire enchanted explosion in nightmare. I was orbing the heck out of the ancients and I checked two of them and Korlic was just moving too much and I had to dodge flying axes and WW's. You know how it is. So in the last seconds, I had the other two dead and I figured I could finally get a lock and check his attributes annnnd I shot an orb before checking, stepped to dodge the polearm and he was kind of low HP :P I just saw the fire enchanted and his HP and looked one more time at the beautiful orb graphics slicing straight through him. It was a beautiful hit and he landed and BOOM! He took me with him XD Bastard XD I mean, flipping hell, what are the odds? XD I knew he was close to death since the other two had already died, but I didn't think it was _that_ close XD
I don't remember any other deaths. Just the funny ones XD
In LoD it's also much less of a problem to get some decent gear for nightmare and hell and I hadn't lost anything super valuable. In classic it's much more of a struggle and an adventure. Online I used to just ignore LoD and in single player, it's really nice to have cheap runewords and I hate it that PlugY doesn't work for classic because that would be amazing for hardcore.
Buuut, Cactus lets you change versions really quick and it has fixed loading times on TCP/IP, so muling is a lot easier now. And so is getting BO, Ench, or just rushing your char, which is very useful on earlier patches where we didn't have respec yet.

Okay I’m going to get long-winded on this game for a minute, maybe it’ll resonate with someone who felt a wave of nostalgia on that load in screen, that music. That tiny stash. Here we go. I remember this experience so vividly from my younger days. Not knowing what the hell I was doing. Just getting lost in a completely dark, immersive, and incredibly vast world to the much younger me. Experiencing Diablo 2 in some precious free time given to me by my mother, being allowed to lock myself in our office with the family Dell for a few hours. Maybe not being allowed and sneaking in there anyway ... and diving in... Gosh, that town music alone still floods me with nostalgia ... I would spend so long in town staring and studying the vendor weapons and armor, fascinated by the looks, sizes, damage - not caring or knowing even a whiff about what was “meta” or “bis” or “min/maxed”. I was a kid back then. I can vividly remember my first time getting to Act 2, probably after playing the game for weeks. Diablo 2 was such an insanely immersive experience, the game being so intimidating yet inviting, begging you to slowly explore the dark, scary, and unknown world - with a new challenge and a new item to loot around ever corner. With no judgement, no expectations, no feeling of not doing it fast enough or “meta enough”, no urge to read a guide and skip the grind where possible, etc. This game never held your hand, but it opened its hand to you, inviting you deeper. Like a deep and complex book, one that only you can extract the way forward by turning each page one-by-one, just you and Blizzard North. That is an ancient gaming philosophy now. We’re too smart, too good, too fast, too efficient. Who knew that after learning to fly, I’d miss crawling back then. Diablo 2 was the maze I crawled through - every other game I’ve played in the 15 years since then, I fly through. And let me tell you, do I miss the crawling. And back then, not knowing any better, it was those aspects I miss most. My lack of gaming experience, my ignorance of “learning” the game efficiently.... not feeling like I HAVE to play a certain way, a certain speed.... resulted in the most pure, immersive, and incredible gaming experience I’ve ever felt. Unrivaled. I was probably 7-12 years old back then, idk. Being 23 now and having gamed ever since, I’ve never ever felt that high, that rush, that the early D2 days gave me. I feel I’ve almost chased the feeling D2 gave me when I was young to an extent, ever since. I compare the slow, steady, BRUTAL, immersive experience of playing this game, reading item stats, staring at my stat tree (picking whatever sounded cool), loving the way my gear visually changed as I equipped armor of a new base (not even knowing what a base was back then), hell even socketing gems into my gear just for the color change it made it on my character. Now I play Path of Exile mostly for my ARPG fix , and sure it’s a great game. But spamming flasks, moving a million miles an hour across the screen, obliterating hundreds of monsters with each click, dashing around, farming maps, with 20+ stash tabs, a build perfectly min/maxed with finely crafted gear, considering all the breakpoints and calculations, all going into creating an efficient killing machine. Pushing to the deepest depths of the end game, after flying through leveling in any new character I start. I’ve become the master, and the game does my bidding. Back then with Diablo 2, it was my master. I was but a mere visitor in a world I never thought would be so hard to find again. But yet, without a shadow of a doubt in my mind, my completely inefficient, ineffective, wrongly built, over-leveled barbarian in Diablo 2 as a young kid.... gave me a lifetime more enjoyment than my efficient, min/maxed, lightning fast, badass characters can ever come close to giving me now. No ARPG game will ever scratch the itch left from this game. The sad part is, you can never go back. Once you learn how to play games “properly”, any game, the experience changes. Sure, you can finally beat it efficiently. You finally “do it right”. You finally become a big dog, you win, you push hard, you carry people, you farm gear, you “perfect” your gaming experience. You get to access all that content you’ve always wanted to. But that can genuinely never replace what Diablo 2 provided for so many of us back then... it was just... different. Incredible. And a 10+ year wait for Diablo 3... for such disappointment, and even more since. Diablo 2, you changed my life... my gaming life... nerdy sure... but damn. Was it real back then. Love you Diablo 2. Love you. Maybe D4 won’t disappoint. But we all know, it’ll never feel the same.

I remember the game like this. Before I got the game me, my brother and friends played the shit out of the demo which I got in a pc magazine when I was 9-10. In the demo the stony field is blocked off, as far as you can go is blood raven. You can only play as a barb and the only skill points you can put up is the first level ones. I got a barb to level 14 or 15, which is insanely high. Most items didn’t change your appearance, especially the gamble items like scale mail which cost an absolutely insane amount of gold and typically sucked, it all just looked like what quilt armour looks like too.
Probably the best damage you could get in the demo is by finding a gem shrine and upping chipped gems to flawed or the level up from that and putting them into 3 socketed long swords.
When we got the full game 1.08 was just ending on battlenet, and on non ladder things arkaines Valor 1.08 version was the most expensive trade item in game.
1.09 cow level runs was the most immensely fun thing ever. Shame they nerfed the experience gained, in a sense it was a good thing due to people killing the cow king and trolling everyone, but I think they should have allowed cow levels to be opened even if you had killed the king as they shit on Baal runs. Also they used to have so even if you were level one in a cow run in hell you’d gain like 60 levels in one run.
Before I stopped playing from the initial time me and my friends started battlenet, runewords had just come in, and there as that glitch where if you unsocketed a certain runeword the stats stayed and you could throw 3-4 more runes into it. They were called ith swords as people typically put ith runes in it, normally some ohm tunes as well. I also remember those hacked occulus rings they would go poof a week or 2 after trading for one.
I don’t mind 1.13-1.14, for long term players it’s a change, and cool how many builds you can make, especially enigma making it so any player class can teleport so you aren’t force to magic find with a sorc. Also infinity made it so classes weren’t useless in hell due to immunities. Overall it wasn’t as fun as 1.08-1.09, though I do love the Ubers, but without new age runewords that would have been close to impossible for most builds, probably an old school fast attacking physical unit with a necro using life tap or summoning a load could have done it.
One more memory. Amazons used to be the absolute best. Wind force was the ultimate item. Eagle horn was highly sought after but a lot cheaper. Then Buriza typically came third. I remember people used to rage about people using buriza, the term was ‘buriza lamer’ for people that froze and owned everyone in PVP, was hilarious.

Wooo classic Diablo2. I remember my 1.0 sorceress... That was so fun to play.
Lots of investment in "Warmth" (I think I was maxxed) and Used a crossbow of somekind, one the fast ones.
My friend really loved the Necromancer with shitton of skellies and his blood golem, with that poison dagger skill or something.
He would create a huge mob and then I'd explode them with the Orb. Fun times. Man that brings me back.

Flamespike was removed because hardcore characters kept dying to him while loading the area and the amplify+fire enchant being so strong. For anyone interested in playing v1.0 (or any other version of D2) - You can easily switch between all versions of D2 using Cactus by fearedbliss ... if you have any experience installing any mods it should be easy to do!
    github.com/fearedbliss/Cactus
    ua-cam.com/video/j7gyc6jp644/v-deo.html
In short - Cactus allows you to easily switch between versions on the fly using only 1 installation of D2 - each version's save files are isolated and are safe when switching versions. Also includes Singling features - which greatly improve the performance of the game + other QoL features.
Amazing tool for those wanting to experience previous versions of D2 without the pain of installing each version individually.

That's very nice for rushing, muling and buffing and stuff. I suppose that ATMA works with most versions? Maybe? Sort of? I never did like ATMA much for its bugs with items corrupting files like Hsarus boots and SoJs though.

What I do remember the most were the awful drop rates on everything, if you didnt gamble you might have gone through 4 acts finding 1 yellow and 1 gold item at average. With no mana pots , every character had to be somewhat competent in melee and had decent defense, doing quests was vital cause all the rewards mattered so much more. Still quality of life coming from LoD and later patches opened up the game for way more playstyles and experimenting so that version is the absolute king over nostalgic feelings :D

If you have a 6 sided die and you want to know the probability of rolling either a 3 or a 6 its 1/3 or 1/6+1/6. If you want to know the probability of rolling a 3 and then a 6 its 1/6*1/6=1/36.
In the case you were talking about you wanted one OR the other, so the probabilities add.

Paladin was actually quite strong, because you pick War Hammer with knockback, equip Charge and Holy Freeze and then beat the crap out of everyone, because Charge had no attack rating, it always hit. With Barb, leap attack (lvl 18 skill) had no attack rating, so most people run one of the giant weapons (usually polearm) with leap attack for main and whirlwind for right click. WW was also lot stronger then in LOD (later patches, it was still pretty good in 1.7-1.09).

Llama, please do a 1.0 necro run? As a necro/assa player, I've always enjoyed your runs! Plus, it's going to be an interesting challenge - I like d2 1.0 because the player can't rely on rune recipes or respec. Overall it makes you achieve more with less. Which is cool in it's own way.
Running 1.0 on a modern machine should be much easier if you spin up a Virtualbox VM and install an old copy of XP or 2000. I doubt Win 7 would cooperate, but still, it's an option.

  • @Tyrian3k

I remember how happy I was when I found my first good rare lance for my barb... and how absolutely painfully slow a spear barb was at leveling to 30. You exclusively attacked single targets and all you could reasonably do to improve your damage was to increase your mastery because there was no such thing as synergies or respecs.
Looking at the HC ladders for the melee characters compared to the casters was quite amusing as well, since all of the melee characters died *way* earlier because of iron maiden. And yes. pretty much *exclusively* because of iron maiden. If people would still play it today, I'd suggest leveling a necro up and join a game to kill Diablo and watch what happens when you cast iron maiden on the enemies when there's melee characters attacking the enemies.
But hey, at least the necro's blood golem was borderline immortal when dealing with melee enemies if you used iron maiden. Duriel was *never* easier than with a blood golem and iron maiden. Getting to level 18 in act 2 on the other hand was quite a challenge back then.
But hey, this is just how I remember things.

Amazing content. I wish you do some other old patch content some day. Like 1.08 LoD would be interesting also.
In 2000 I started D2 in single player in 1.00. I played at least a 70 level Necro, 66 level sorc 75 or so level Barb.
Leveling up after 70 was really slow because no other players in the game to increase the exp gains, so basically after 75 or at the latest at 80 you really don't get much exp at all in single player game and it doesn't make much sense to continue. Also the monsters drop very little loot and they are kinda too easy in single player when you get better items.
Then at the end of 2000 I got some decent internet connection and used school PC's to play also .. so I jumped to Battle.net play at around 1.04 or 1.05. The game really changes with multiple players in the game and those later patches of Classic. So yeah I recommend trying 1.05. It has some the quirks of this 1.00 version but a lot of stuff fixed. Like the single items in vendors etc.
There is a mod that you can copy to D2 folder to run multiple clients.. thats how I get multiple players in a TCP/IP game which makes the experience a lot different.
Recently I've started to play 1.06 in single player but TCP/IP game with 5-6 client in game. Even streaming to twich for some archive material. Probably should upload to here to keep it :)
Currently in Act4 normal with paladin and barb. Need to get 5 chars to NM at the same time to get 5 players there also :)
