"......and if you want to beep beep, beep beep....." LOL!.....This movie was released by the Criterion Collection on bluray and the transfer is excellent...there are some interesting deleted scenes in the bonus features too.....
I've seen this movie countless times. It never gets old. It also introduced me to the music of Cat Stevens, which was perfect for the actors and the story. When young, this film made me feel better during bad times. Now old, I still like it.
This is best cuts from the movie, the parts that really explain the reason why Harold & Maude are the way they are. I've never understood why people call this a dark comedy, when it is the most life affirming movie I know. Yes, the beginning of Harold's life is tragic, but once Maude comes on the scene, she shows us all what enjoying every moment of life can be like. And she loves Harold unconditionally with her whole heart, but not more than she has loved others like her dead husband. Maude is complete in herself, she doesn't need Harold, certainly not the way he needs her, for he is drinking up her love of life like the thirsty little tree she rescues, and she is the first great love in his life. Those around him can't see his true love, but it is real, and wholesome, and innocent, even their lovemaking scenes are about true love and passion for the beloved, not lust. When he glimpses the concentration camp numbers on her arm, he finally gets to understand how she has become so in love with life, it is her victory over the killers of her loved ones and all the tragedy that was inflicted upon her, and it helps him realize that his own sad childhood is joyous compared to the trauma she has suffered and doesn't talk about. And in the end, Harold's grief is just as real as his love, and liberating; death holds no attraction anymore for him for it would be a betrayal of all she gave him. His last staged suicide was a rejection of longing for death (represented by his beloved hearse-mobile) and an affirmation of life, singing and dancing away from everything that used to enslave him. I don't think he goes back to his mother's home ever again, but heads out into the wide world, hopping a freight train, or "borrowing" a car, or hitch-hiking, and taking the adventures that life gives him.
And then he gets assaulted by a drug dealer and has to resort to prostitution to get by, eventually becoming a heroin addict and dying at the age of 25, life is wonderful, but Maude got to where she was through luck as well, I doubt she failed to realise that.
You are missing the entire point of the movie, if you have seen it. She was in a concentration camp in WW2. Her life was worthless to her captors, she could have died in there or died on the inside surrounded by all the death and lack of hope. There was no luck that got her to to the place of her enlightenment but, the understanding that life is full of both love and sorrow and in experiencing both we find the meaning of what it is to be alive.
@@cpshirling Yes, she had hope and a strong mind, but a lot of people do and still meet tragic circumstances, luck is an element in success. She is grateful for the lucky opportunities she had to survive.
I have never forgotten this movie. I saw it for the first time in 1971, when I was 21 years old. It has continued to be an inspiration in so many ways. A film to turn to and embrace when the world seems scary and uncertain...which is always, and never.

The one scene here that hits me every time is when Harold looks down at Maude's arm (at 4:08), and sees the concentration camp tattoo. Suddenly, everything about Maude becomes blindingly clear, and the song takes on another layer of meaning...
+primroseburrows I watched this movie when I was realy young about 8 and saw things in it I would not see today, likewise I noticed new things as I watched it again later
I loved both actors' performances in this film!! This song alone puts me in a lively mood. It's touching how Maude taught Harold to appreciate more life. This is Cat Stevens' best song!!
I watched this on the good prescription cough syrup when I was 13 and had a blast. My mom knew I liked old things from the 60’s and 70’s, but she didn’t convince me until the second go round at Blockbuster when she told me that everybody had a big crush on Bud Cort back in the day. Well, needless to say Harold and Maude changed my life and made it more worthwhile. I only watch it with really close friends now. I’ve seen it so many times, but I always have a good cry. I love Hal Ashby too. He’s such a brilliant director and I was obsessed with his films for a long time.
I recently saw Ruth Gordon in an oldie silver screen cinema film and my god what timeless beauty, super fresh and exuberant, a simply divine creature. I was spellbound the first time i saw Harold and Maude. This is better than anything, wondrous, magical, timeless
I have watched this movie at least 20 times... one of my all time favorites! but until this day I never saw the 'tattoo' on Maude's arm... WOW... So sorry I didn't recognize that before!!! Glad I finally did, tho!!!
Seen this wonderful movie with my mum..she's 87 years old & shes " young at heart" too../ we love this great Love- life Story...One of the best movies...❤
I thank God for my mother. This is one of her favorites and she brought spiritual meaning to my life through everything beautiful just like Maude !!! ⭐❤⭐

The old sculptures on the Emeryville mud flats at 3:23 really bring back memories for me. They have been gone at least thirty years now, but anyone of a certain age certainly remembers them with with fondness.
This is in my top 3 movies. Last year with no warning i got deathly ill with spinal meningitis staff infection and pneumonia at the same time. was in and out of coma coded three times had five emergency surgeries in seven weeks almost died then infection raced up my spine fracturing all my vertebra just missed my brain stem. they said that I would be a vegetable or quadriplegic but thank God I am walking now with a small limp. But when I was scared and alone living hour by hour. I sang trouble in my head. I really highly recommend the movie across the universe. I loved it so much I watched it 3 times in a row.
Wonderful movie ah Maude's spirit gives me life! Every song in the movie is so beautiful as is this one. Oh how life passes so quickly. 'Aim above morality' :D 'take chances'
This is so much more than a love story, it is more than I could ever put in to words. I find it unexplainabley deep and beautiful. It's like a beautiful painting in motion or a beautiful musical composition translted in to a story. So many ways to see this movie and they are all good.
I just love this scene ... especially when she stands up and the piano keeps on playing. Brilliant film and whether your on top of the world or struggling beneath you 'll be all the better for having watched it. i see something I've missed everytime.
Beautiful movie and sound track.. I love it so much.. Come on Harold , join in .... Whenever my back is against the wall, I remember Maude and I sing out and I feel free again. ...Thank you Yusuf for this.. My Happy Song .
I too have been a fan of this film since seeing it with my cousins Georgia and Lois in a movie theatre about 40 years ago or so. Thanks kindly for posting! Love the Cat too.
One of my favorite all time movies, and all time favorite musicians, Cat Stevens. It doesn't get any better. This was my favorite of Cat Stevens songs, although not as well known as his others.
Cinema brilliance was done with a 2-second glance down to her wrist. It brought tears to my eyes as here is this person so full of life who went through such a terrible experience. Plus, how can you go wrong with all the Cat Stevens songs in the movie?
+shevdiam5 Life isn't about controlling our circumstances, but how we respond to them. She chose not to cry, but to live the moments she was in. Not languishing in the horrors of her past, but rejoicing and celebrating the present.
