Love the implications that all supernatural things like ghosts and talking to them is all magic.
But that's a real phenomenon that can be scientifically investigated! Not magic in the slightest. (or at least, I hope that's the reasoning.)

I love the utter incredulity of Arin's "WHAT THE FUCK- WHO WROTE THIS?!" when Phoenix was talking about Max's "bust"
The fact that Arin came up with a better punchline to the Mexican pizza joke in 5 seconds than the WRITERS OF THE CASE
That's the gag though, Moe's a clown who makes bad jokes, not good ones.
@@Archgeek0 but that's what makes every character so unlikeable. The gag is that they have no redeeming qualities. It's not hard to write a bad clown character, but making good jokes can be challenging. It's not a good bit if the bit is jokes aren't funny
To be fair, they were probably trying to translate something from Japanese that didn't really come across properly.
@@Showsni I don't really think this is the case. The localization is done very well, and they change so many character's names to have their puns make sense in English. I don't understand why they'd put so much effort into little details like that then flub up a whole case somehow.
If anyone speaks Japanese, or knows what changes they've made from the original, I'd love to hear about it, though!

Moe: "The Inoue family has a business. What business is it?"
Phoenix: “The ‘Inoue Store’?” (Phoenix tries to guess the name of the shop, not the type of business.)
Maya: “A cafeteria!” (Homophonous to “esophagus”.)
Moe: “Right! Because they’re the I-no-ue family!” (Inoue is a common Japanese surname using the ideograms for “above the well”, but this is also homophonous to “above the stomach”.)
I guess they added the “Mexican” part in English just to use the “weapon of bowel destruction” line with Phoenix, even though it made no sense in regards to the correct answer…

Remarkably, it comes up often enough for the series to be inconsistent about whether or not that's true.

This same issue pops up in episode 3 of Apollo Justice. The defendant was performing a disappearing magic trick, and thus she couldn't explain her alibi during the crime. She almost got convicted because of it. Very silly.
Actual magicians are really really reluctant to reveal their tricks in court even if it'd exonerate them. David Copperfield went through this not too long ago when an audience member got injured in one of his shows.
Maya isn't his lawyer. She's his lawyer's "special someone".
I don't think I'll tire of Dan being the only one to continually acknowledge the whip - The noise he makes is so funny.
This whole episode is just Dan yelling at Dan for being goofy while Dan gets frustrated with Dan

Yeah but for something as dumb as this case, I don't blame him for hoping the culprit is something stupid but possibly funny even if it's so illogical. Instead what we got was something stupid and arguably illogical with some genuine tragedy.

Which leaves the middle of the game acting as the 'bridge' to get to the end. So they have to just throw ideas against the wall to work things out how they want.

It is utterly bizarre to me that this one terrible case is the only time the Judge ever takes initiative as the primary power in the courtroom and only when Moe is on the stand. Trilo was WAY worse than him and the Judge let him talk forever about how he wanted to go out with Regina and even joined in.
Moe was too busy cracking jokes than to testify what he saw. At least Trilo was focused on saying what happened that night while explaining what he did since, disgusting or not, Trilo wasn't deviating as much as Moe was.

I've said it before and I'll say it again-- thank you for soldiering through this case. The next case is genuinely one of the best in the franchise, and even if it's not your favorite, it's still such a marked upgrade from Turnabout Big Top that I get whiplash playing it back to back. Like, all of a sudden we return to high melodrama and die-hard devotion and themes about justice and how petty competition hurts everyone in its blast radius.
I will say, in defense of Big Top, the murderer's motive is a lot more interesting and tragic than I expected, and it's the first time we get real hints about more depth with Franziska and what happened to Edgeworth. It just sucks that it's in the middle of this case.

Don't worry, it becomes abundantly clear at a certain moment - so much 15 year old me was let down they spoiled a genuinely good mystery (imo at the time)
Honestly, I think the joke of replying "You are to respond with the whole truth, no fractions" to the first few numbers of pi, an INFINITE number, is such hidden genius - that really tickled my funny-bone xD

I like that, despite Arin's insistence he was going to continue with the protagonist voice, he keeps teetering back out of it from time to time. A good representation of how Phoenix is only dumb as a box of rocks sometimes.
I have allergies, and the pollen count is high today. My eyes started bothering me during the "Mexican pizza" joke, and my left eye started watering when Moe asked Maya what she thought the punchline was. I wipe my eye and then Maya goes "Because they're in the Café Teary Eye!"
... Maybe Maya is more than just a spirit medium.
Maya saying she “can’t figure out magic bc she’s no good at it,” is so ironic because she literally channels the spirits of dead people and then embodies them. If I saw that in a circus, I would literally shit my britches
Literally, the only thing I like about magic is finding out how it's done.
Just watching a magic show is kind of boring. I'm way more interested, impressed and entertained to see the mechanics of how it all works. I appreciate engineering over aesthetics.
Ja, Phoenix sorta dropped the ball on that one. At least half of the fun is figuring it out. And when you do, the euphoric rush is awesome.
I'm starting to warm up to Max, yeah he's an arrogant jerk but I do get the idea that he wants the best for the other performers and WANTS to see them as equals even if he doesn't right now. He's not a good person but he's not irredeemable either.
The anime version of this case leans more heavily into that aspect of Max's character, which is one of many reasons that the anime adaptation is superior.
It says a lot that he's the most tolerable member of the circus by far

At the very least they are not jumping to the conclusion that, because there are no footprints, Max is the killer since he can "fly". I 100% imagined that is what they were going for ever since they Gumshoe revealed that fact... And then Phoenix would have to prove that Max wasn't really able to fly and he had to use props for that.
So, at least this case isn't as bad as I thought it would be...

I love that the judge’s breaking point to slip out of being dumb and actually reprimand someone for being unprofessional in court is clowns. Even the puppet didn’t do it for him.

If their lines were just reversed, it would actually be a funny joke where she says tell the truth with no fractions and he starts reciting pi, because it's not a fraction-able number, and he'd have to recite it forever, buying him infinite time.

I'm still very sad that this case is so bad. Cuz, like, I genuinely think the story is great- amazing, even. If only they didn't make it frustrating and boring and filled with people who you hate at the beginning...

The dialogue in this case is very... off. Almost like it was translated directly without any attempt to clean it up.
All I can really ask for is that please God let them get through this case and KEEP ON PLAYING. if this is the case that makes them give up on the game I'm gonna riot so hard

Funny how all the talk about revolutionary ventriloquism was written in this game around 2002 or so in the original GBA Japanese game, and 2005 in English, just a few years before the big craze around Jeff Dunham.
