But there are some smaller swampy lakes that have more I have heard in eastern Ontario

Professortusk depends on the species; many leech species feed on "cold-blooded" organisms, like reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. some are "happy" to feed on mammals/birds as well. we're still working on species ID, as these could be non-blood-sucking, predatory leeches (feeding on invertebrates in this case). will be getting samples and taking some closer pics soon!

I was just up in that area today watching the pike spawn and there were almost as many leeches in the water. as in this video. Does anybody know the life cycle of the leeches? Do they live in the bay of Green Bay and go into the ditches to lay eggs or do they lie dormant in the mud and come out in spring to breed? Something else?

From what I understand, typically they are next to harmless. They don't take that much blood and even then only feed about twice a year. The only issue would be the anti-coagulants from the bites.
these resemble horse leeches, which don't drink blood, but prey on earthworms and pond snails :) ....bloodsucking leeches are also an essential part of the ecosystem though, you shouldn't get rid of them.

Leeches arent in rivers...they prefer the shallow slow moving parts of lakes and ponds so dont know how thats possible.
